00:00We are pretty self-sufficient people, but that has caused us to make prayer our last resort when we're in trouble.
00:11We make prayer so difficult. Prayer may be mysterious, but it's not complicated. It's simple.
00:19And in this series, I'm going to teach you how to transform your prayer life.
00:24I'm not here to make you feel guilty about not praying as much as you should.
00:31The real issue isn't guilt. It's that we're missing out on the great adventure God has for us.
00:39So you want to know why you're not seeing your prayers being answered?
00:43Well, they're just not specific enough.
00:46Your prayers should be so specific that when God answers it, you recognize it.
00:51If you want your prayers answered, three things need to be true.
00:56The request needs to be right, the timing needs to be right, and you need to be right.
01:03Don't pray like an adult. Pray like a child.
01:07Keep it simple, keep it specific, and keep at it.
01:10God cares about everything in your life, even the little things.
01:17Nothing is too insignificant to get on your prayer list,
01:20because God has the capacity to care about every detail of every one of His children, including you.
01:27What is prayer?
01:29Prayer is a conversation.
01:31Prayer is a relationship.
01:33And prayer is a great adventure.
01:35Thank you for joining us today.
01:46We are going to talk about something that people are very nervous to talk about.
01:52And I think that if you want to empty your church out,
01:56announce that you're going to do a series on witnessing one month and a series on prayer the next.
02:01And by the time you get to the third month, nobody will be left,
02:05because everybody feels a certain sense of guilt about those two things.
02:10But we shouldn't feel a sense of guilt.
02:12We should ask God to teach us to pray.
02:15That's actually what the disciples asked Jesus to do.
02:18And I find it interesting.
02:20They didn't say, teach us how to pray, although that was part of the answer.
02:25They said, Lord, teach us to pray.
02:28And I think that's one of the things we all need to learn how to do.
02:32We're going to have a very honest discussion about prayer today.
02:36I think I can speak for Sheila as I speak for myself.
02:39Neither one of us consider ourselves to be experts on the subject,
02:43because we feel the same kind of, we should be doing better than you feel.
02:49But we want to have this honest discussion.
02:51I've actually written a book on it, just some things that I've learned along the way
02:54and things that we're going to talk about.
02:56So it's my privilege to introduce Sheila Walsh.
02:59Can we say hi to her?
03:05I am so excited to be here.
03:08If prayer is so life, in fact, the words you use in your book,
03:12you talk about thrilling, exciting, and adventure.
03:16Can prayer honestly be thrilling?
03:19You know what, Sheila, I do believe it is,
03:21because most of our life is cause and effect.
03:24We do this, and this happens.
03:27But when we pray, we do this, we pray, but we have no idea what God is going to do.
03:33It's a wide-open scenario.
03:34And many times, according to the Bible, He does more than we could ask or think.
03:39And so when we enter into that corridor of prayer,
03:42we are walking in uncertain territory, and it's always for the good.
03:46Let me ask you just a very basic question.
03:48If prayer is this great adventure, which I believe, why do we find it so hard?
03:53You know, I think part of the reason for that is we're all pretty self-sufficient people.
03:59We know we should pray, but we can do it ourselves.
04:02I hear people say things like this, you know, I tried this, I tried that.
04:06I guess the only thing we can do left now is to pray.
04:08It's their last resort.
04:10And that says a lot about prayer, because it tells us that we are self-centered people
04:15and self-sufficient people.
04:17And sometimes it takes hard things in our lives to help us realize that's not true.
04:22Yeah.
04:23There's a passage of Scripture that you call a treasure map.
04:28I love that picture of us seeking for treasure.
04:30It's Matthew 7, where it says,
04:32Ask and you will be given.
04:34Seek and you will find.
04:35Knock and the door will be opened.
04:37How does that guide us in how we pray?
04:40The thing about that is it takes prayer out of the philosophical and puts it right down.
04:46I mean, I joke with people when I say when I first read that passage,
04:49I thought ask was a special word for prayer.
04:53And I looked it up in the lexicons and found out it means ask.
04:58It's not a word for prayer.
04:59God is simply saying to us, ask and you will receive.
05:04Jesus gave his disciples kind of a roadmap for prayer, the Lord's prayer.
05:09Why do you call it the perfect prayer?
05:12Well, you know, if somebody asked who's the greatest teacher on prayer,
05:17I would say Jesus, because when the disciples said, teach us to pray,
05:21he gave them a prayer.
05:22That prayer wasn't just a mantra for us to learn and repeat.
05:26It was a model prayer.
05:28It was an outline.
05:29I actually have a little outline in one of my Bibles that I made for myself
05:34with the outline for prayer from the Lord's prayer.
05:37And when we follow that outline, it is pretty amazing how broad the subject becomes.
05:43So let's break that down.
05:44Let's go with the first line, our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
05:50It's a beautiful way to begin because it's beginning with praise and worship.
05:54Let me tell you what I know about prayer, Sheila.
05:56If you just list your problems and leave God out of the picture in your prayer,
06:00when you get done praying, you will be more depressed than you were when you started.
06:04Wow.
06:05Because listing your problems doesn't do anything for you.
06:09You have to bring God into the picture.
06:11And Jesus taught us that the way you pray is you begin by acknowledging God's presence
06:17and worshiping him and acknowledging that he is worthy of our prayers.
06:22The next part of the prayer is thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
06:29That is a heart cry for our priorities to be God's priorities.
06:33Don't you think?
06:34Well, you know, ultimately that prayer will only be answered in the millennium
06:37when the king comes to the earth and puts his will into practice on the earth.
06:41But between now and then, it is our goal and our desire to learn how to live in such a way
06:47that we please God and that what we do is what we would do if we could do everything knowing it was right.
06:55The Bible teaches us we're to pray for God's priorities to happen in our lives.
07:01What do you do if you're in a situation where you're like,
07:04I don't know what God's will is in this situation.
07:06How do you know you're doing what God's will is?
07:09God is not hiding his will from you.
07:13He's not up in heaven saying, I'm not going to let him find out what this is.
07:16Let him see.
07:17God wants you to know his will.
07:19That's a good place to start.
07:20One of the things that happens to us along the way is we get consumed with the will of God for our lives
07:25and we ought to be more consumed for what we're going to do tomorrow.
07:30You know, if we put enough God's will being done today, together, we'll have God's will for our life.
07:36I love in Psalms, you read your words as a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
07:41And the lamp kind of tells you where to take just the next step.
07:45I love that.
07:46If we move on to, we started the prayer with praise, then seeking God's priorities.
07:52The next step is provision, where it talks about give us this day our daily bread.
07:57That to me is a clear indication that Christ is saying we are dependent on God for everything.
08:03That's true.
08:04And we should always remember that whatever we need, if it's in the will of God, he has it.
08:09He's promised to provide it for us.
08:12Sheila, one of the memorable moments of my life and Donna's in ministry was when we left a church in Haddon Heights, New Jersey,
08:21where I was a youth pastor and went to Fort Wayne to start a church.
08:25And I was so frightened.
08:26And there were seven families there.
08:28And I remember the day that Donna and I drove our car with a U-Haul behind it
08:33and pulled into this driveway where we had purchased a house for $27,000.
08:39Whoa, those were the days.
08:41Tells you how old we are.
08:44And I told her I was going to go in and make sure the doors were open.
08:47I went in and I went into the kitchen and there was a big sign on the cabinet.
08:52To this day, we do not know who put it there.
08:54And this is what it said.
08:56God's commandments are God's enablements.
08:59Wow.
09:00God will help you do what he's called you to do.
09:03And as I've gotten older and gained more responsibility for the church
09:07and what David and Cammie and Donna and I are doing here with all of the people that are here,
09:13I realized, man, I don't want more than one day.
09:16One day is enough, man.
09:17One day is enough to trust God for because sometimes the challenges are great
09:23and you're not capable of taking more.
09:25You know, God gave us life in days for a reason so that we can handle them one day at a time.
09:31I love that.
09:31I love that his mercies are new every morning.
09:37You'll be right back with Dr. David Jeremiah and special guest Sheila Walsh.

10:54We return to Dr. Jeremiah and Sheila Walsh's discussion about prayer.
10:59Now we move on to the part of the prayer that's to do with personal relationships.
11:04Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
11:07You talk in this book very strongly, very compellingly,
11:10about the joy of forgiveness.
11:12So let me ask you a question.
11:14If somebody really hurts me and I forgive them,
11:17how does that give me joy?
11:20It takes away the burden that you carry of unforgiveness.
11:25The two verses in the Bible, one in Matthew and one in Mark,
11:29where it says if you have offended somebody
11:32and you're bringing your gift to the altar,
11:34go get it right with the person you offended.
11:37Then if you've been offended by somebody,
11:40go get it right because you can't do business with God
11:42when you have unsolved issues with one another.
11:46And the issue there, Sheila,
11:48is that when you have something like that,
11:50it's always your turn.
11:51When you've been offended, it's your turn to get it right.
11:53If you've offended somebody, it's your turn to get it right.
11:56You say, well, I got it right last time.
11:58Never mind.
11:59It's your turn.
12:00It's always your turn.
12:02And when we do that, God opens the way.
12:05I have to say the understanding,
12:07the power of forgiveness has been one of the most
12:09life-changing things for me because you're right.
12:12It sets you free.
12:13And it's another way of saying, God, I trust you.
12:15I'm not going to try and fix this myself.
12:17I trust you.
12:18That's exactly right.
12:19I met a woman.
12:20We were having coffee together and just an airport somewhere.
12:23We had a layover.
12:24And she said, you know, my husband left me
12:27and went off with a young woman.
12:29I got him all through college.
12:30And the minute he's through, and I said, when did this happen?
12:32And she said, 23 years ago.
12:34And she was caught in this place of being unable to forgive.
12:40When you don't forgive, how does that impact how God forgives us?
12:44Well, you know, there's a lot of confusion in that passage.
12:47It almost seems to say that our relationship with God
12:50is dependent upon our relationships with each other.
12:53And we know that is not true.
12:55God does not forgive us only if we forgive others.
12:59The text seems to say that.
13:01But if you study it carefully, you realize what God is saying is this.
13:04If you want to come and seek forgiveness,
13:07you need to make sure that you're dealing with an honest hand.
13:12And, you know, God, I want you to forgive me and love me and deal with me.
13:16But I hate this guy over here.
13:18And I hate him.
13:19And wait a minute.
13:20God loves him.
13:22You see, you've got a major problem if you do that.
13:25And that's what he is saying.
13:26Deal with me as you want me to deal with you.
13:29And I believe that's the meaning of the text.
13:31Yeah.
13:32I think that we struggle sometimes with this concept of thinking that,
13:36you know, we should forgive because Jesus forgave us.
13:39But honestly, that's been one of the most liberating things for me.
13:42I remember it's just a young girl in Scotland seeing a pretty poorly made movie,
13:47but about the life of Christ.
13:49And it was when I saw the crucifixion scene and I heard Jesus say,
13:52Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.
13:55Then you begin to think, why on earth would I ever not forgive?
13:59And that's what the scripture says.
14:00We are to forgive as God has forgiven us for Christ's sake.
14:04Yeah.
14:04And I say it this way, out of the reservoir of God's forgiveness for you,
14:10you will always have enough forgiveness for anyone who ever hurt you.
14:15You forgive others out of the realization that God has forgiven you.
14:20In some ways you say, Lord, I don't want to forgive this person,
14:23but I know what I've done and I know how unworthy I am to be forgiven.
14:28And you forgave me in the same way that you forgave me.
14:32I'm going to forgive this person.
14:33Yeah, that's beautiful.
14:37The next line in the Lord's Prayer,
14:40I used to find confusing when I was a teenager,
14:42because we pray, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
14:46Why would we pray that?
14:47Because surely God wouldn't lead us into temptation.
14:49It's a preemptive prayer.
14:51It's saying, Lord, it's kind of a, don't do this, but do this.
14:55Don't, don't, don't leave me in a temptation, but deliver me from evil.
14:58God never tempts anyone to sin.
15:01He tests us to see whether or not we're willing to follow him,
15:06but he never tempts anyone to sin.
15:08The Bible is very clear about that.
15:10And then he says, and lead us not into temptation,
15:12but deliver us not from evil, but from the evil one,
15:16evil one from Satan who goes about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.
15:21He's always on the prowl, always after us.
15:24And we should pray, Lord,
15:25don't lead me down that road where he's doing his thing today.
15:28Yeah.
15:30For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.
15:33Amen.
15:34It seems like there's a pattern there beginning with praise, but that's how he ends.
15:39Yeah.
15:39You know what?
15:39I think that's what, one of the lessons we should learn about our own prayers.
15:43Book in your prayers with praise.
15:46Start with praise and with praise.
15:48Yeah.
15:48Fill the middle of it with provision and protection and all the other things.
15:53Just make sure you go in the front door with praise and you go out the back door with praise.
15:57Put the rest of it in.
15:58And if you do that, you'll find that to be very helpful.
16:02Do you think praying, I've found Sundays in my own life,
16:06if I'm having a really hard day, that praying aloud helps sometimes.
16:11Yeah.
16:11First of all, it keeps you from falling asleep.
16:14I mean, you don't, you guys are laughing at me, but you know what I'm talking about.
16:19You know, it keeps you alert mentally.
16:22What a great experience it was for me to go to the Brooklyn Tabernacle and be involved in their services and hear them all pray.
16:29They don't just pray one at a time when it's time for prayer.
16:32They all stand up and they all start praying out loud.
16:35And you feel like you're in this universe that you've never been in before.
16:40Just hear all these people crying out to God at the same time.
16:44And it's a really wonderful thing to hear all the people of God praying out loud.
16:48Yeah.
16:49You go on in the book to talk about the fact the real Lord's Prayer is actually found in John chapter 17,
16:54which you say might be one of the greatest chapters in the Bible.
16:58The 17th chapter of John contains our Lord's Prayer to His Father.
17:04It's very intimate.
17:06I preached a whole series of messages on that prayer at one time.
17:10You cannot read that prayer without realizing how much the Lord Jesus Christ loves us.
17:17I mean, the love of God for us is so borne out in the prayer.
17:21He prays that God will keep us.
17:23He prays that God would love us.
17:24And when you read that prayer, you can't help but be blessed.
17:29I love that last dialogue, the whole, those chapters, 14, 15, 16, 17.
17:33Just some of my favorite passages of Scripture.
17:36You give an interesting fact I didn't know.
17:38Do you know there are 650 prayers in Scripture?
17:41But you identify this high priestly prayer in John 17 as almost listening in to heaven's conversation.
17:49What a privilege.
17:50Because it is.
17:51It's truly what it is.
17:52We have on paper the words that Jesus used to talk to His Father during a time of great anguish and stress.
18:01And His concern was not for Himself.
18:04His concern was for us.
18:06And when you read that, it's just, it's a wonderful experience.
18:10Even knowing what lay ahead of Him.
18:12In the next hours, He was praying for us.
18:15Yes.
18:15It's overwhelming.
18:16The last time we were together, you talked about something that I found fascinating, because it's never something I've done.
18:21You talked about the power of journaling.
18:23How has that helped you?
18:25When I had cancer, I had lymphoma cancer twice.
18:28And it shut me down for a little while.
18:32And I remember a godly woman telling me that I should journal.
18:38And I did not know how to do that.
18:42In fact, the only people that I knew who journaled were mystics and women.
18:48I'm not kidding you.
18:50I'm telling you the truth.
18:51I never knew of a man who journaled.
18:54And one day, I was reading a book by Gordon MacDonald called The Life God Blesses.
18:59And in that book, he talked about journaling in his computer.
19:02That sounded very masculine to me.
19:04It does.
19:05And I decided, you know, it would be a good idea to keep a record of my experiences.
19:11And I probably have that many pages of journaling, which I'm going to shred before I die.
19:18The journaling thing was really helpful to me during that time.
19:22The way I journaled was I would just type out my prayer to God.
19:26The journal began, Dear Lord, yesterday was this way and that way.
19:30And this is what happened.
19:31And this is how this worked.
19:32And then I began to add quotes from books I was reading that were helping me spiritually.
19:38And I put the quotes in there.
19:39And most of all, scriptures.
19:41And then, of course, I was asking God for things.
19:44One of my great prayers was that God would let me live long enough to see my grandchildren.
19:53I never even added great-grandchildren.
19:56That was a little bit much more.
19:57And the Bible says he does more than we were ask or think.
20:00So he gave me grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
20:04I have that in my prayer.
20:07I have that in my journal when I asked it.
20:10And you know what happens when you're going through a dry time?
20:13You go back and read and you say, you know, God, I can't believe I've forgotten that you did this for me.
20:18And you did this for me.
20:19He's always doing something on our behalf.
20:22That's so true.
20:23Yeah.
20:24I decided to do a little research and ask people, you know, what are some of the questions that you would like to ask, Dr. Jeremiah, particularly on the issue of prayer?
20:31Somebody asked, does God listen to us when we pray, even when we don't feel like our prayers are going any higher than the bedroom ceiling?
20:38Well, just read the command.
20:40Pray without ceasing, except when you don't feel like your prayers are going out of the room.
20:44That's not what it says.
20:46It says, pray without ceasing.
20:49May not always to pray and not to faint.
20:53You know, sometimes I think we think that spiritual discipline is a matter of how we feel.
21:00You know, the Bible says, husbands, love your wives.
21:05You say, well, I don't feel like it.
21:06Well, do it anyway, because that's what you're supposed to do.
21:09There are many things in the scripture like that.
21:11And prayer is certainly one of them.
21:12Prayer is a responsibility that God has placed upon us, whether we feel like it or not.
21:18Yeah.
21:18Somebody asked, what should I do when I pray and I don't feel anything's happening?
21:23Well, I've always said that there's more than one answer to prayer.
21:26And there's yes, there's no, there's wait, and there's grow, you know, and God may be testing you.
21:32I've had many stories.
21:33One of my favorite stories about my professor in seminary, Dr. Hendricks, was he prayed for his unsaved father for 47 years.
21:42Wow.
21:43And he got saved just before he died.
21:46And he, I remember him saying, I'm glad I didn't stop at 25 or 27.
21:51I kept on praying.
21:52Lifetime's not too long to pray.
21:54No, that's right.
21:55Someone wanted to know, do you have to find like a quiet place?
21:58And should I be on my knees?
22:00I think that's a good thing.
22:01I remember reading about Susanna Wesley, who had so many children, she couldn't find a place to pray.
22:07And she used to pull her apron up over her head and go behind the stove.
22:10That was her prayer.
22:11That was her prayer place.
22:13We all have had places that God seems to have blessed.
22:16I've had a place like that.
22:17But I don't feel like I have to be in that place to have meaningful prayer.
22:22The Bible says, go into your closet.
22:24I don't think that's literal.
22:25I think that means going to a small place where you're not interrupted and pray.
22:30Yeah.
22:31I want to return to something we kind of touched on earlier, and that's unanswered prayer.
22:36You know, I'm thinking of people who might be watching or here with us that they've prayed and prayed about something,
22:41and it's just like they feel like God is not answering.
22:43What do you do in a place like that?
22:45Well, you know, I don't have any expectations that I can explain God.
22:51And I don't know what he's up to.
22:53What I know is what I know about him.
22:56And he's good and gracious, and he cares deeply about us.
23:00And there's no way that God would withhold answers from us that he deemed were for our good and for his glory.
23:07So you keep on praying.
23:09And you know what?
23:10Some of our prayers may not be answered this side of heaven.
23:13We may get to heaven, and we'll be looking at each other.
23:15So that's what it was all about.
23:18We may be saying that kind of stuff.
23:20Yeah.
23:20I just think to keep on praying, even when you don't see the immediate answer,
23:27is a testimony to your faith in God and your persistence.
23:31Yeah.
23:32I remember you telling me that when you were with the Brooklyn Tabernacle,
23:36that they told you that they had been crying out to God for you during your illness.
23:41Has there been a time in your own life when you've cried out to God and see him move in a mighty way?
23:46Well, I'm going to tell you a little story.
23:48When Don and I started our church back in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with seven couples,
23:52we had little children, and I was working really hard.
23:56And I was, believe it or not, I started on the radio by driving to the radio station
24:02and doing the show live because we didn't have any equipment, and we couldn't afford any equipment.
24:07So I'd get in my car every morning, I'd go to that radio station, get there by 7.30.
24:12I had a 15-minute show, and then I'd come home, and that's when Don and I would sit and talk.
24:17We had a really nice little house that had kind of a sunken living room in it.
24:22You know what I mean?
24:22You kind of walk down in the living room.
24:24I came home one day, and we were talking, and all of a sudden, she reached across her chest like that,
24:32and then she passed out on the floor.
24:34And I didn't know what to do.
24:36I tried everything to get her to come to.
24:38She didn't come to.
24:39I called 911, and before the ambulance got there, the sheriff arrived.
24:44He tried to bring her to, and finally they took her away in an ambulance,
24:50and I was there and went, and she went to the hospital.
24:54They had her for several hours, and finally she recovered.
25:00I don't know what they did.
25:01They never did tell me exactly what happened to her, and I don't know to this day what took place.
25:06But I'll tell you what, ladies and gentlemen, my prayer in that ambulance between my house and the hospital
25:12was the most intense prayer I've ever known in my life.
25:16When we are in need, we don't pray.
25:19We cry out to God, and that's what happens.
25:22Beautiful.
25:23Beautiful.
