00:00right to the regular let's go let's go we'll tell you about the adjustment to
00:03the kickoff rule Cameron Dicker kicks Dominic Lovett Grant Stewart back for
00:08Detroit the season begins and Grant Stewart is the man who's gonna catch it
00:12and bring it back and he almost fumbled the ball he got his hands back on it at
00:17the 27 yard line and we'll make sure that he came away with it Stewart who by
00:23trade is a linebacker new to this Detroit team let's see if you guys hands
00:27back on it he did not and it's Chargers ball so Stewart who played running back
00:33in his past briefly in college given the chance to bring one out turns it over
00:39and the Chargers come up with it in the person of Caleb Murphy
00:51see the punch there the punch was made by Kendall Williamson a safety for the
00:57Chargers and the question we did the ball come out before Stewart's knee
01:02was down look like it didn't look like it was moving just a bit
01:10still waiting for confirmation on this or not and one play into the season and we're
01:19gonna get a review previous players under review that's the familiar voice of Bill
01:25Vinovich who's been the referee in three Super Bowls he's gonna come over to the
01:29sideline look at the tablet and make the decision on the field here in this first quarter
01:33Terry McCauley our three-time Super Bowl referee is with us Terry we wasted no time to bring in pal
01:45right off the bat Mike I see the ball clearly out before the knees down we look from the end zone shot
01:51it's punched out the ball's loose it's a fumble looks like it's gonna gonna change hands
01:57yep a lot easier to see it that way isn't it yes it is and Chris remember Dan Campbell told us he
02:04was gonna give Stewart who's really a linebacker a chance to return a couple here he'll probably end
02:09up being a coverage guy on special teams as we go through the season and may not get another chance
02:14to return kickoff you know that's one of those things though sometimes as a coach and you're in a
02:24preseason game and you want to do something to stir up the emotions get the guys going a little bit let a
02:29defensive guy come over and return a kick and Dan goes yeah
02:33and here's Bill Vinovich with the call after the ruling on the field stands Los Angeles ball first
02:42down okay so the charges do have it in this first quarter Vinovich is making the decisions on the
02:47field looking at the tablet the rest of the game replay will be handled upstairs here in the booth
02:53with this the only game on and the New York office not available for game day operations as per
02:59usual Trey Lance the number three overall pick for the 49ers four seasons ago begins a quarterback
03:05Amari and Hampton their first round pick is the back and on the boot he'll throw it complete to
03:10Will Disley the tight end gain of nine for Disley who had a terrific 50 catch season a year ago Chris
03:17Trey Lance a guy we have seen a lot of in terms of being on rosters but not on the football field
03:22the guy that is still very young younger than Michael Pennix younger than Tyler Shuck who's going to be
03:28the Saints quarterback apparently this year and Justin Herbert is the guy who is going to try and
03:34help him along but the big question really is can Jim Harbaugh crack the code and get him going
03:40here is the first round pick Hampton with the run of penalty flag is down as Amari and Hampton out of
03:45North Carolina taking 22nd overall in the draft as a first down for the moment offside defense number 53
03:52five yard penalty results in a first down Zach Cunningham the linebacker offside first down
03:58for the Chargers first round pick it's exciting we're seeing a lot of stuff in here not only the
04:04new young running back Amari and Hampton who I've never heard such praise about a guy I mean every
04:09coach that we talked to said this guy just has a feel for getting in the gap and getting in the holes
04:16and just has this natural downhill ability then the ability to make people miss ability to run over
04:22people and they are really excited Jim Harbaugh was telling us we had a chance to redraft we're taking
04:28him again same thing the same guy
04:30from the 17 high pass brought down by Lance and there is Hampton on the run good looking run
04:39to the five yard line he goes second and short good to get a look at the leading running back in the
04:48Atlantic Coast Conference last year yeah the 15 touchdowns over 1500 yards the last two years in
04:55college and I think that fits that Jim Harbaugh description of what we've been talking about right
05:00this offensive line has gotten bigger of course everybody talks about Mekhi Becton coming over he'll
05:06be the right guard for this football team big powerful running backs and offensive line
05:12snap issues again Lance falls on it so Zion Johnson starting guard who's never played center is in
05:19there at center two snaps ago is a high shotgun snap that time a misconnect with Lance but they would
05:26love to have Zion Johnson who is one of the more athletic guys that they have on that offensive line
05:32have the ability to get in there and play that position he and Bradley Bozeman who had been the
05:38center just flip-flopping I think ultimately he goes back to guard Zion Johnson does but at least
05:44they're getting him some experience in case
05:46Lance Gibbs turning the corner Hampton
05:50great open field tackle by Rakia Sin who came in for the Lions this year and makes the tackle
05:58at the corner veteran played some time in San Francisco I gotta admit I was watching for Hampton
06:03to make one of these Superman moves that we've been hearing about and Rakia Sin said I've been around
06:08this league a few years I'll take care of that one this is a Detroit team that as you said at the
06:13beginning ran out of bodies especially in the secondary at the end of the game uh into the season
06:19last year and Yacin his seventh year in the league makes the play in the open field
06:23Chargers gonna go for it on fourth and two
06:26and it's Lance throwing up top touchdown brought in by Will Disley
06:31he had two last year
06:34and the eighth year tight end Adam Washington
06:37puts the Chargers on the board with the year's first score
06:41how about that nice little touch pass there from Trey Lance
06:45I knew he could throw it I knew he could put the fastball out there
06:49but watch as he bootlegs out here and rolls out
06:52just drop it in the bucket sort of over top of the defender
06:55perfectly done if you want to say how do you start your first drive
06:59there you go that was a nicely done
07:02play call and play
07:05no battle for kicker with either team so we're gonna see the guys
07:10who should be there when the season starts for real
07:12Cameron Dicker knocks through the extra point
07:14so Stewart got the chance to return a kick
07:17fumble
07:18Chargers took it down the field quickly
07:21it's a touchdown pass to Will Disley
07:247-0 Los Angeles
07:25now a permanent rule
07:28the tweak if the kick flies into the end zone
07:31and is unreturned it comes to the 35 instead of the 30
07:34plus special teams coaches think we'll see more returns this year
07:37also an adjustment on the onside kick
07:40fourth quarter only now any point you can determine onside kick
07:45so they kick to Stewart again he brings it out again and this time he holds on to the ball
07:51as he gets out to the 35 yard line
07:54getting a look at Stewart in a return role for the second time for Detroit
07:59so the Lions who's back up quarterback situation is being sorted out in this preseason behind Jared Goff
08:05first it will be Kyle Allen later we'll see Hendon Hooker
08:08Allen new to the team was on the Pittsburgh roster last year Buffalo before that
08:13first 15 in five years we've seen him start 19 games here in the NFL
08:17and win games and play well and he is he's the sure thing right if you're going to go with a backup quarterback has experience
08:25he's the guy more so than anybody else on this team right now
08:31Frank Reynolds is the starting running back for Detroit runs to the edge gets a couple of yards
08:35Dean Leonard with tackle but we have a flag down on the play
08:40office number 84 10 yard penalty would be first down Detroit's tight end Shane Zylstra called
08:47for the hold we saw some Chargers starters out there on offense
08:51we will not have any Lions starters out here in this first of their four preseason games
08:57it's interesting to watch though Kyle Allen come out of here and five different teams five different offenses
09:05in the last five years came out of the Pittsburgh system
09:08and he said yeah very similar to Mike Tomlin right
09:11you come out and get the same sort of action with Dan Campbell
09:15first and 20 and inside again goes Reynolds only about a yard
09:23that time into this Chargers defense of course the Lions offense big story is the changing coordinator
09:29Ben Johnson is now the head coach in the division of the Chicago Bears and the man on the right there
09:34John Morton 55 years old takes over in Denver pass game coordinator last two years before that was with Detroit so he's been around the beginning first of the three years of the Ben Johnson run line offense
09:49Johnny Moe exactly that's what everybody calls him
09:56second at 18 and Allen throws in the middle it is incomplete in and out of the hands
10:02and one of the players the Lions want to see in action Dominic Lovett the seventh round pick
10:07out of the University of Georgia who opened eyes in camp but drops his first one here
10:12yeah that was a tremendous throw that time by Kyle Allen it was thrown right between the linebackers
10:19he's timed out absolutely perfectly and it's the one thing you've got to get used to within this
10:24Lions offense the ball is supposed to be on you when you make the break
10:29and just not quite secure with the catch point
10:33and the guy I mean the hit Nico Reed is one of the Chargers folks are raving about
10:38his camp performance
10:39good draw for Reynolds here on third down
10:42not much to the 31 yard line
10:44Detroit Dye linebacker makes the stop and Detroit a sloppy first four minutes and 15 seconds
10:52fumble couple of flags and a quick three and out
10:56you know just having a few starter types in the lineup sometimes can make your team feel a little bit different
11:07that is Naheem Miller Hines who is the same Naheem Hines that we saw
11:13star in the league and have success a few years back Indianapolis Buffalo now known
11:19as Naheem Miller Hines signed with this Chargers team waiting for the kick from Jack Fox
11:23outstanding year again last year for Fox
11:27Lions punter boots it middle of the field 45 yarder Miller Hines to the 25
11:33made a first two miss brought down after a return of three yards
11:40well Jim Harbaugh the turnaround for Jim the man in the khakis has done it all places
11:47at Stanford one and eleven to that great run on the farm including Andrew Luck's time to the Niners
11:52taking the Niners to the Super Bowl losing to his brother John then Michigan inherited five and seven Wolverines and came back to his alma mater and took them to the national championship two years ago
12:01to the national championship two years ago and from five and twelve his first year last year eleven and six made the playoffs losing the wild card to Houston but we're dark khakis here Jim didn't get the memo that we were going to do the whole production element with the traditional
12:17Harbaugh khakis I think he's got it figured out though
12:21in many different ways
12:23in many different ways
12:25land to the drop look deep gonna check it down
12:27and Jarrett Patterson
12:29has it just out to the 35 yard line good pick up of about six yards
12:33Trey Lance looking good and Jim Harbaugh has got to be happy I was watching Lance down on the field before the game throwing I don't know what I was expecting but he's ripping it out of there and he's ripping it out of there.
12:45He's a player and the other thing you've got to remember about this quarterback is that okay Greg Romans the offensive coordinator and we have seen him with Colin Kaepernick we have seen him with mobile quarterbacks Lamar Jackson what might they do with this guy.
13:06Good rush by the Lions nothing open for Lance pass is incomplete we saw the talent in the draft right when he was taken number three overall by San Francisco but remember North Dakota State limited starts just 17 then got the job in this season ending ankle injury in week two in 2022.
13:24So that limited to San Francisco time traded to the Cowboys after Brock Purdy wins the job in San Francisco really around just to learn the Cowboys system one year backs up starts the last game last year week 18 no playoff significance.
13:38Free agent and comes here to see if Harbaugh will help resurrect his career as he's behind Justin Herbert.
13:44Let's see if he pulls out a little mobility here.
13:46Third and four little touch pass downfield is brought in.
13:50Nice grab by Keandre Lambert Smith.
13:54They're calling him KLS in camp and he has been G-O-O-D in camp as well.
14:01One so quickly off the line of scrimmage just an easy throw bringing the pressure right up the middle.
14:07And that easy pitch and catching so far.
14:10The lances look great.
14:12On the ball quick give to Patterson for a couple of yards on that play.
14:17Lambert Smith got open against Ennis Rakestraw who is the Lions second round pick of a year ago.
14:22Looking to see if he makes that year two jump for depth in the Detroit secondary.
14:27Yeah and you talked about Lambert Smith.
14:29Here's a 4-3-7 speed guy.
14:31So it gives them some versatility on the outside.
14:35So many times last year it was Ladd McConkie or nobody.
14:39Now they've got some additional speed on the outside to go along with Quinton Johnson and Ladd McConkie now.
14:45They're running for about a yard by Dale is out of Troy.
14:5743 carries for the Chargers last year.
15:00You mentioned Keandre Lambert Smith.
15:02Those couple of names in Ladd McConkie and Quinton Johnston.
15:05Young receivers.
15:06This is a very young receiving core.
15:08So guys like Lambert Smith, their second round pick Trey Harris.
15:11Terrific chances to make this team because McConkie was the man last year for the Chargers.
15:17And let's just be honest.
15:18They didn't have enough weapons last year.
15:21They just didn't.
15:22It wasn't enough talent at the receiver core to really make a difference for Justin Herbert.
15:28Third and six for Trey Lance.
15:30Nothing open.
15:31Hangs in the pocket.
15:33Escapes.
15:34Escapes again.
15:36Get the play alive to get to the bench.
15:39And incomplete.
15:41So some of that movement from Trey Lance you saw there as the Lions couldn't get to him to bring him down.
15:46But the entire time you saw Trey Lance trying to get rid of the football and throw it and not run it.
15:52You know so many times you think of these guys that are young and mobile quarterbacks.
15:57They're going to take off and run.
15:58I really think he's trying to develop himself as a passer.
16:02We saw some quick release throws.
16:04We saw some quick reads.
16:05Get it out to the flat.
16:06And that time kept his eyes down the field.
16:09Just nothing there.
16:10Cameron Digger 9 of 11.
16:12Some over 50 last year.
16:14How about a July doink, Collinsworth.
16:19I can get him in any moment.
16:22I have now filled out the bingo card.
16:25Bingo card.
16:28And Ohio to compete.
16:29Visit the hall.
16:30Be here at the game tonight.
16:32Who said Michigan and Ohio can't get along when it comes to football?
16:35Everybody.
16:36Okay.
16:37It's true.
16:38But for this one it was nice.
16:39Very nice gesture.
16:40Kyle Allen and the Lions drive two for the 42.
16:45The flag is down and so is Reynolds as he is taken to the sideline by Jasir Taylor of the Chargers.
16:57Offside.
16:58Defense number 91.
17:00Lined up in a neutral zone.
17:02Five yard penalty.
17:03Repeat first down.
17:04It's on Deshaun Hand.
17:06Drafted by the Lions.
17:08Back in 2018.
17:10And brought in now Chris.
17:12As they try to fortify the middle here for the Chargers.
17:15Which they need.
17:16Puna Ford left and he had been their best player inside.
17:20Hand did play all 17 games for the first time in his career.
17:23Five career sacks.
17:24So really he's that guy.
17:26The run stuffer inside.
17:27Try and control that.
17:28And allow those linebackers to run.
17:31Did that down in Miami.
17:33Puna Ford is now at the Rams.
17:36Out of the hands of Allen.
17:38Busy for Reynolds through the traffic.
17:41The veteran had a touchdown.
17:43Craig Reynolds gets the first down of the Chargers 43.
17:46And that's what they're looking for out of Kyle Allen right there.
17:49To be that guy.
17:51He has the experience.
17:53He can read defenses.
17:54You saw how quickly he knew he was going to get it out to the check down.
17:58Allow the playmakers on this offense.
18:01Not necessarily on the field now.
18:03But the Jameer Gibbs.
18:04The David Montgomery's.
18:06The Jamison Williams.
18:07Those guys.
18:08Let them have the football quickly.
18:10And do something with it.
18:12Reynolds again.
18:14Tackling the hole.
18:15Gain of only a yard.
18:17As the veteran Tony Jefferson.
18:19Very rarely you see a 33 year old in his 11th year in the league.
18:23Playing in the Hall of Fame game.
18:25But Jefferson is.
18:26And he made a play.
18:27Yeah.
18:28How about Jefferson.
18:29He was out of football a couple of years.
18:31And came back.
18:32And last year really had an impact.
18:34They had some injuries in the secondary.
18:36Comes right in right off the street.
18:37He was on his way to being a scout.
18:39I know.
18:40It's really a remarkable story.
18:42And just a little credit to Minter as well.
18:45For getting him ready to play.
18:47Jesse Minter.
18:48Defensive coordinator for the Chargers.
18:50Deep drop Allen.
18:51Nothing downfield.
18:52So he throws it at the feet of Reynolds.
18:54For the incompletion.
18:55But a flag comes down.
18:58And thrown by the referee Bill Vinovich.
19:02Potential ground.
19:04Offense number eight.
19:06And Allen's trying to negotiate that he had Craig Reynolds in the area.
19:10Right there.
19:11He was throwing it at the feet of Reynolds.
19:13And Vinovich will get help from the down judge on that side.
19:19And they'll discuss.
19:23There's no foul for intentional grounding.
19:25There was an eligible receiver in the area.
19:27Third down.
19:29It's a good call.
19:30It was.
19:31It was right there.
19:32They're going to give him that one.
19:33Nice.
19:34Quick.
19:35Absolutely.
19:36It's July.
19:37We can be nice to everybody.
19:38Right?
19:39We'll do our best.
19:40We're talking about Kyle Allen and learning new systems.
19:44John Morton inheriting this system.
19:46So many of the players.
19:48And of course Jared Goff is the guy who makes it go.
19:50So Chris this is one of those interesting transitions where.
19:52You don't want to tinker with it too much because my gosh the production's off the charts.
19:57As you see best of the NFL over the last three cumulative years.
20:01Yeah.
20:02When you talk to John Morton he said look.
20:04We know what they're doing.
20:06My job is to allow the players to do what they want to do best.
20:10And what we think they do best.
20:12And we're going to not change a lot of stuff.
20:15Add a couple little touches here and there.
20:17But we're not changing much.
20:19Allen throws.
20:20Underthrown.
20:21Undercut.
20:22Intercepted.
20:23Back the other way.
20:24Nico Reed.
20:25Who continues his good summer.
20:26Reed inside the 10 to the 5.
20:29Ball came out late and Nico Reed a player who wasn't invited to the combine.
20:34A rookie free agent out of Oregon continues to flash for the Chargers.
20:41We haven't even made it out of the first quarter yet.
20:44And watch Nico Reed.
20:45He's got his eyes on the quarterback and the receiver.
20:48That was an easy one right there.
20:51Nico Reed is a guy that supposedly can do 10 back flips in a row on a trampoline.
20:565'10", 180 pounds.
20:59Had five career interceptions in college.
21:02And right now he is just cruising through the NFL.
21:06Can I get the fact again?
21:08He can do what?
21:0910.
21:1010 in a row.
21:11Back flips on the trampoline.
21:12Yeah.
21:13Can you do that?
21:14I can't do one.
21:15Derwin James is in the secondary.
21:17He's going to be there when it matters most along with Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator.
21:21You know, players know.
21:23And a couple of players mentioned to me about Nico.
21:27Keep your eye on 46 tonight.
21:29Chargers paying off with that.
21:32So, we'll get the ball at the six yard line.
21:35And Lance will give it to Vidal.
21:38Left side.
21:39Hard hit at the goal line.
21:41As he was rocked by Yacin.
21:43And it'll be at the two.
21:45Gain of four.
21:47I think the Chargers are going to start running the other way.
21:50Rock Yacin is living up to his name so far in this one.
21:54And if you want to be a Detroit Lion, you better flash a little bit of that for Jesse Minter.
22:00Let's go, Houston!
22:02Inside the run with Vidal to the goal line.
22:06Second effort.
22:07In for the touchdown.
22:09To Kamani Vidal.
22:14Pops it in.
22:16And for the second time a Detroit turnover turns into a short touchdown drive for the Chargers who go up 13-0.
22:23We got to see a little of Vidal last year when Edwards and Dobbins were both out with injuries.
22:30And he delivered.
22:32This is the kind of just gutsy kind of running that you expect out of a Jim Harbaugh team.
22:39Mike, I think the Chargers are going to be one of those teams that just kind of grinds on you.
22:44You know?
22:45They're going to keep it close.
22:46They're not going to turn it over.
22:49Justin Herbert only three interceptions until he got to the playoffs a season ago.
22:54Number one scoring defense.
22:55Let's run the football.
22:57They're playing just like that.
22:59It's a good turnaround last year.
23:03Ran into the Texans.
23:05In a sloppy game.
23:07Four interceptions for Herbert after such a good regular season.
23:10But that regular season was solid for the Chargers.
23:13Great start to the preseason as well.
23:16Interception by the rookies caught the eyes of the folks at Charger camp.
23:20Nico Reed on the other end.
23:22Vidal.
23:23Second effort in for the second.
23:25Chargers touchdown to the quarter.
23:28Sharpe taking his deserving place over there to the right inside the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
23:34One of the four inducted this weekend.
23:36We'll talk to Sterling in a moment.
23:38Kickoff is taken by Jacoby Keeney James for Detroit.
23:42Keeney James brings it to the 23 yard line and Sterling standing by with Melissa Stark.
23:48Melissa.
23:49And Mike this one is special for all of us.
23:51We've all been his colleagues at some point.
23:53And dear friends with Sterling.
23:55And you have always said that you did not play to get into the Hall of Fame.
24:00That's correct.
24:01But what were your emotions when you finally did?
24:03Well, extremely happy because I am one half of the first brothers to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
24:10That's huge.
24:11Two little black boys from Glenville Georgia getting an opportunity to be here.
24:16Never saw that.
24:17Can't explain that.
24:18But really happy to be a part of that.
24:20And your brother Shannon said in his 2011 induction speech.
24:25I am the only pro football player that's in the Hall of Fame.
24:29And I'm the second best player in my own family.
24:32That's very true.
24:33No, that was true.
24:34And I'm glad he said that because I don't know if America knew that.
24:39No, that was tremendous for him to say that.
24:42And he didn't have to.
24:44You know, my brother and I are very close and a lot of people know this.
24:48And, you know, he's my best friend.
24:50I think I'm his most of the time, even when it rains.
24:53But, no, that was a tremendous statement for him to make.
24:56And you had so many incredible moments on the field.
25:00What was the best moment of your career?
25:03Getting a chance to play the first game.
25:05Because that was all I ever wanted to do, Melissa.
25:08I just wanted to play in the NFL.
25:10I didn't want to play for 20 years.
25:11I didn't want to be an all-pro.
25:13A lot of the gifts that I was given, first to catch 100 balls in back-to-back seasons,
25:18that was great.
25:19But I got a chance to play, Melissa.
25:21I fulfilled my dream.
25:22And a lot of people didn't know what a dream was.
25:25A dream is a gift that you give to yourself.
25:27And that's what I gave to myself.
25:29And I was tickled pink.
25:32I've always wanted to say that.
25:34I was tickled pink to be able to fulfill my dream and play in the NFL.
25:37Well, and you played for seven seasons.
25:39Your career ended because of the neck injury, forced you into retirement.
25:44But you say it was not a short career.
25:46Why?
25:47No, it wasn't.
25:48Because remember, if I only wanted to play, I didn't want to play for 20 years or 40 years
25:52or do all this other stuff.
25:53I just wanted to play.
25:54And the only guys happier when my career ended than I was was the doctors that told me I
26:02will never play football again.
26:04We were very happy.
26:05We high-fived.
26:06And it was great.
26:07That's all I ever wanted to do was play.
26:09And, you know, God has a wonderful way of guiding us or putting us exactly where we're
26:16supposed to be the moment we're supposed to be there.
26:18I didn't talk to the media as a player and I was in the, I did media for 21 years.
26:23So, I mean, who knew?
26:24You know, and that's the thing is you go on a journey and you enjoy that journey and
26:28you see where it takes you.
26:29Well, and talk about that journey because you're talking about retirement and what
26:34you've done, the broadcasting career, golf.
26:36As we throw it back, we want to include Chris and Mike here because if you've ever played
26:40golf with Sterling like I have, it involves many cigars.
26:43Yes, got to have that.
26:44A lot of music.
26:45Got to have that.
26:46Long drive.
26:47Got to have that.
26:48So, retirement's treating you well.
26:50Retirement has been wonderful to me and Mike Tirico knows how much I love golf.
26:55Mike and I have played a few times.
26:57I know we played at the expansion draft for the Houston Texans.
27:00Yes, we did.
27:01We played.
27:02So, yeah, I love golf because it's, for me right now, it's 74 decisions that are all
27:07wrong and I got to figure out a way to make them right and I love golf.
27:10Well, these guys I know want to have a little conversation with you as well.
27:13Mike and Chris.
27:14Kyle Allen just picked off here by Tony Jefferson, ruled inbounds on the pick.
27:20After a couple of throws to Lions draft picks, got him down the field.
27:24Allen put that up for grabs and it was intercepted.
27:27Let's take a quick peek at that.
27:28After two to Isaac Tesla, the third one does not connect.
27:32Jefferson goes up and gets it.
27:35And I'm just trying to figure out, you know, I have 74 mistakes I make in my golf game, too.
27:40But then I got to play the back nine.
27:42So, I don't know what to do with it.
27:45Hey, Sterling, as we watch Jefferson, I just wanted to take a second to say congratulations to you as well, pal.
27:52I know you didn't talk to the media, but I went up to Green Bay one day.
27:55Yep.
27:56We did an interview towards the end of your career.
27:58We turned around a couple of years later and started an amazing career in the media.
28:02I'm so happy and proud of you, pal.
28:04And it's great to be here for this weekend.
28:07Mike, it's been a pleasure, man.
28:08I enjoyed.
28:09You're one of the guys that I learned from when I got a chance to be a host at NFL Network.
28:14You were one of the guys that when I got a chance to do my one game being in the chair in Indianapolis,
28:21I called you and you spent two and a half hours on the phone with me.
28:25I was really bad, Mike, but I was really good at being bad.
28:31So I never did it again.
28:33But you've always been wonderful to me.
28:35I can say the exact same thing about Chris Collins' work, working with him at NBC.
28:40Man, you know, and I love this lady right here.
28:43Melissa and I had a wonderful years in NFL Network, getting up at 5 o'clock in the morning,
28:48going in, doing TV.
28:50She spent a lot more time in the hair and makeup chair than I did.
28:53All right.
28:54But it worked out well for both of us.
28:56Kill his mic.
28:57Let's get back to the game.
28:58It was unbelievable, though.
28:59When we were in the meeting and we were talking about,
29:01we're going to have a conversation with Sterling and the whole thing.
29:04I was like, yeah, I used to work with him.
29:06And Melissa, yeah, I used to work.
29:07Yeah, I used to work.
29:08It was like, what?
29:10Hey, Chris, you got to get around, bud.
29:12You got to get around.
29:13Nobody gets around like you, big guy.
29:15I appreciate it.
29:16Sterling, we love you.
29:17I appreciate it.
29:18We love you.
29:20Thanks, Melissa.
29:21Melissa will talk to the Hall of Famers as we go through.
29:22So great to hear from that guy.
29:23Wonderful friend.
29:24So good play there by Stewart last time to get Lance on the ground.
29:28And then he makes the tackle after the reception by Arande Gadsden, the second.
29:33He played at Syracuse and trying to make this Chargers team as a tight end who can stretch the field.
29:38Well, good opportunity here for Trey Lance.
29:41I'm anxious to see him in some of these third and long situations as well.
29:48Hassan Haskins is running back.
29:52Lions brings four and Lance throws over the top.
29:55It's caught but short of the first down.
29:58That's brought in by Darius Davis.
30:01Kick returner has been a good receiver thus far.
30:05OTA is in the start of camp for the Chargers.
30:08And L.A. will kick it away.
30:10Trey Lance.
30:11It was fun to get to know him a little bit.
30:13Had a conversation.
30:14He said in the history of the Hall of Fame game, nobody's more excited to play in it than I am.
30:19Usually people are like, oh, it's an extra preseason game, whatever.
30:23He was pumped.
30:24Just the chance to get to play in four straight preseason games.
30:29J.K. Scott's going to kick it.
30:32Lions look at Dominic Lovett as a kick returner.
30:35Veteran Scott hangs it high, 54 yards.
30:39Lovett from the 21.
30:41Trying to get to the edge.
30:43Gets to the edge.
30:44And a return of 20 to the 41-yard line.
30:48One of the roles, if he is to make this Lions team,
30:52and contribute is that punt return.
30:55And he did a nice job there.
30:56After one, the Hall of Fame game.
30:58Chargers 14, Lions nothing.
31:00You're watching the Pro Football Hall of Fame game.
31:03Presented by Novartis.
31:05Get our season started.
31:07Mike Tirico, Chris Collinsworth, Melissa Stark.
31:09So glad you're with us.
31:10Terry McCauley in the studio.
31:12Second quarter begins.
31:14Chargers leading 14 to nothing.
31:16Scored off of both Detroit turnovers.
31:18Craig Reynolds with a nice run for Detroit's first half.
31:21For Detroit's first down right across midfield.
31:24Chris, we were talking to Sterling Sharp.
31:26Another receiver for Detroit.
31:28Their third-round pick, Isaac Tesla, really popped.
31:32He had a couple of nice catches.
31:33Yeah.
31:34And, you know, he was an interesting guy from the standpoint.
31:37High school quarterback and transferred into Arkansas.
31:406'4", 2'16".
31:42So you're thinking with those numbers, he's not going to be very fast.
31:44Well, he runs.
31:47Nope.
31:48Time out for a virtual measurement.
31:50Sorry, you've been stopped for the virtual world.
31:53I'd rather see this.
31:54I'll get back to that story, I promise.
31:56The chain gang is still employed.
31:58They have not been made redundant, as they would say in the UK.
32:01But if it's close to a first down, you're going to get a virtual measurement.
32:06And you're going to see everybody look up to the screen to check out to see if the first down was made using technology.
32:13And it's a first down, as you see there.
32:16There's the virtual measurement.
32:19And there's the line to gain.
32:21So the Lions have a first down.
32:23If it is short, you're going to see how short they were.
32:26Now, they probably knew that that was a first down on the field, but it's pre-season.
32:30You want to make sure this new technology is ready to go for the season.
32:34And the answer is yes.
32:35That was good.
32:36That was better than my story.
32:38No, it wasn't.
32:39No, that was good.
32:40I like it.
32:41It's sort of like the tennis.
32:42Right?
32:43It's sort of like the tennis.
32:44The Hawkeye camera.
32:45Yeah.
32:46Six of them.
32:47Triangulating where the ball is and all that stuff.
32:50First down for three.
32:51You want to keep doing your story over the Tislaw?
32:53I would love to.
32:54Yeah.
32:55Because I like this Tislaw.
32:56He is a really good player.
32:58And when I saw him drafted in the third round, I was like, oh, he must not be one of those guys who can catch the ball easily.
33:05He has some of the best hands I've seen on tape when we were watching and getting ready for the draft.
33:11The one thing you know about this guy is going to catch the ball.
33:14He's proven he's got some speed.
33:16He has some size.
33:17He could be a factor on special teams.
33:20A lot of good things about Tislaw.
33:22Tislaw.
33:23And when he throws, this is complete.
33:26Spinning is Shane Zylstra.
33:29Right near the first down marker.
33:30But a yard shy.
33:31So no virtual measurement coming.
33:32Just third down.
33:33Tislaw, you mentioned he was a high school quarterback in the state of Michigan.
33:38About 150 miles away from Detroit and Hudsonville.
33:41He won a state championship as a wing tee quarterback.
33:44State championship game in fourth field.
33:46Everybody gets on the buses from Hudsonville.
33:48Comes over.
33:49It's a great experience.
33:50Grew up a Lions fan.
33:52So much of a fan that he had his own custom Lions jersey with his name on the back.
33:58And you're never going to guess where he wore it.
34:03I'll tell you about it in a second.
34:04Third and one.
34:07Craig Reynolds in the back.
34:08Clang down.
34:10Timeout.
34:11Stead for Detroit.
34:13First charge timeout.
34:15Detroit.
34:16So you've got these visits.
34:18The team can invite 30 players to come in and visit.
34:20Right?
34:21So here's Tislaw growing up as a Michigan kid.
34:23He's got the Barry Sanders jersey.
34:24Got the Lions hoodie.
34:25So cute.
34:26Right?
34:27Here's official visit.
34:28And this is footage of him in his pre-draft visit.
34:30Look at the back of his jersey.
34:32He's got his own custom jersey with his name on it.
34:36And Brad Holmes, the Lions GM, thought, man, this guy's trying a little bit too hard to make a good impression on the job interview.
34:43But it was the real deal.
34:44It wasn't a joke.
34:45He's been a lifelong Lions fan.
34:47And now the custom jersey is the real deal.
34:50And Isaac Tislaw has the chance to be a home state hero.
34:53You know, and as if the Lions need more offensive weapons.
34:56Right?
34:57And this is between him and Dominic Lovett.
35:01They feel like they have two guys and really Lovett has probably been the star of the camp even more than Tislaw.
35:07But once again, sometimes some of those bigger guys, when they actually get on the football field and they get a chance to exert some of that physicality, it looks different and better.
35:18One time Kennedy in motion.
35:25Craig Reynolds finds that hole on the outside, gets a first down over at the 37.
35:30Chris, what's made the Lions good?
35:31We showed the numbers with Ben Johnson.
35:33What's made them good?
35:34Their offensive line's been terrific.
35:36But now there's change up front and forgetting who's playing in the preseason.
35:41That's going to be the story for how good this Lions team can be in 2025.
35:45No doubt.
35:46Kevin Zeitler went off to Tennessee.
35:49Frank Ragnow, their tremendous center, retired.
35:52Now Graham Glasgow has to go from guard into center.
35:55So there are a lot of changes in the works.
36:00Good run by Reynolds in the open field.
36:03Brought down as he was trying to climb away.
36:05RJ Mickens got him and Reynolds may have tweaked something there as he was leaping up and he's going to go to the sideline.
36:14But this is where the Lions make a living, running right up the middle of the field.
36:19And now they're going to have a rookie second round draft pick in there probably playing guard in Tate Rutledge.
36:24They're going to have a young player, second year player Christian Mahogany on the left side.
36:29And we saw quite frankly with the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
36:33If you get decimated inside, sometimes that can create more issues.
36:37And for Jared Goff, certainly that's been his strength.
36:40The almost perfect protection that he's gotten over the years from this great offensive line.
36:45Panay Sewell, Taylor Decker, all those guys.
36:48So how quickly can they get it together with that interior offensive line?
36:53Jabari, small carry there for a yard.
36:56I thought that was such a good point you made about Jared Goff and how comfortable he is.
37:00He stands in that pocket and delivers.
37:02But having that firm front of the pocket, the center and two guards.
37:06And now Glasgow may still be there, but he's in a different position.
37:09It's going to be all different right in front of him.
37:11And the running game is the key to the Detroit Lions offense.
37:15Full start.
37:16Office number 72.
37:18Five-yard penalty.
37:19Still second down.
37:20That's a veteran they brought in.
37:22Jamarco Jones, half-dozen years in the league.
37:25Plays college ball here in the state at Ohio State.
37:28He's in as a tackle that they're looking at.
37:32Later on, we're going to see Mason Miller tackle a rookie at a North Dakota State who's impressed the Lions early on.
37:39I'll tell you who would like to impress the Lions is Kyle Allen.
37:42Two interceptions already in this game, sort of opening the door a bit for Hinden Hooper.
37:47Give to Small.
37:52Jabari Small.
37:54College days, Tennessee.
37:56Average five yards of carry for the Vols.
37:58Takes it to the 25-yard line.
38:02As we are four and change into this second quarter.
38:06Terry Lance doing okay.
38:08But it really, it's a wide open competition for the number two spot, really, on both these teams.
38:15But Kyle Allen, I guess I sort of thought he would be the favorite because he has so much experience.
38:21If something were to happen to Jared Goff, he would be a guy that could step in.
38:26But you wouldn't expect him to be the one making mistakes in the Hall of Fame game.
38:31As Allen throws it inside.
38:33That time Lovett hangs on to it.
38:35Dropped the first one in the first quarter.
38:37Gets this with the converging Chargers secondary around him.
38:41Takes to the 17-yard line.
38:44And that's the kind of throw right there that you see out of Jared Goff all the time.
38:49Those on-time, anticipated throws.
38:52On the money.
38:53Stop the receiver if somebody's coming at him.
38:55And that's the advantage that Kyle Allen's going to have over Hinden Hooker.
38:59Who was much more at the University of Tennessee.
39:02They would spread everything out.
39:04He would actually keep his eyes on the receiver.
39:06See if they're open.
39:07And then deliver it when he saw it.
39:09And now he's having to learn this anticipation type of offense.
39:13Just to remind you.
39:14Things are normal.
39:15It's fourth down.
39:16The Lions are going for it.
39:17Allen.
39:18Strangles.
39:19Tries to go for the first down.
39:20And Kyle Allen shows some wheels to get there at the 16-yard line.
39:26It's going to be a first down for Allen.
39:32He certainly has the ability to do this.
39:34And more and more in the NFL, you just see this, don't you?
39:37When everything is on the line, those fourth down plays, when you have a mobile quarterback,
39:42what an advantage.
39:43They're an advantage.
39:44I mean, you think about the top two guys.
39:46Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, the top two candidates for the MVP.
39:51Certainly, they can do that.
39:53He said the 16, my mistake.
39:55The 14-yard line.
39:56First and 10.
39:57Best looking Detroit drive of this first half.
40:04Dubari Small left for a couple of yards.
40:07Zach Horton, rookie out of Indiana.
40:10He's in there as a blocking fullback.
40:14For Dan Campbell, year five.
40:15Just an incredible turnaround.
40:18Teams started out 0-10-1.
40:21Got a victory against Minnesota in that first year at Ford Field.
40:25And the combination of Goff and Campbell just taking off.
40:30Big wins throughout.
40:31Winning at Green Bay to end the season and the Aaron Rodgers era at Lambeau.
40:36Coming up just shy of the playoffs within the last two years, division championships.
40:41Small to the right.
40:43To the nine-yard line.
40:45Junior Colson, former Michigan Wolverine for Harbaugh, makes the tackle.
40:51Just great improvement in the numbers you see there, Chris.
40:55Yeah, and the one name they don't want to hear a lot of this year is Ben Johnson.
41:00You know, no offense, Ben Johnson was great, came in.
41:03Their offense spectacular.
41:04But if we're talking about Ben Johnson this football season,
41:08it's because things aren't going well with this offense.
41:11The expectations for what the Detroit Lions offense is going to be are so high,
41:16it is just going to be a burden on this team, really,
41:19and on John Morton throughout the course of the year.
41:22Quick hits.
41:23He loved it in the slot.
41:25The rookies a yard short of that first down.
41:28So, fourth and one again.
41:31And then right back into Dan Campbell's wheelhouse.
41:33Remember, before Ben Johnson came in to take over the play calling,
41:38there was a change in the offensive coordinator position.
41:40Dan Campbell called the play.
41:42Yes, he did.
41:43And, yes, Ben Johnson's a bunch of the trick plays,
41:46and this is not minimizing anything, but a lot of the razzle-dazzle
41:50and the let's go for it and do this silly stuff on the Detroit offense
41:53from the mind of Dan Campbell.
41:55You see him with the play sheet in hand.
41:56He's all over what Johnny Morton's calling in to Kyle Allen.
42:02Fourth and one to slot at the bottom of the screen.
42:05Allen looks that way, goes to Lovett who cuts underneath
42:08and gets the first down.
42:10Right around the three-yard line.
42:16Now, there was a good throw.
42:18You want to see in those clutch situations,
42:21and this is exactly what you would expect out of Kyle Allen.
42:25Good catch on the back end of that thing, too.
42:27I think he did hold on to it on the tail end of it.
42:31But the great thing about going for it on fourth down as much as they do,
42:36when you get in a really big game-ending, game-winning situation,
42:40you're kind of used to it by the end of the year.
42:43Craig Reynolds back in, hits the handoff, and spun down.
42:49Good play by Caleb Murphy.
42:51To throw him down for, excuse me, loss of a half or maybe even a full yard.
42:56Caleb Murphy is an up-and-coming guy on this defense.
43:00Now, Kyle Kennard is the Bronco Nagurski winner, best defense player in college football,
43:05drafted in the fourth round.
43:07But the guy who's competing with him is Caleb Murphy.
43:11And in reality, probably early in camp, Murphy may be a bit ahead in that battle.
43:19Reynolds, good cut inside, and Craig Reynolds takes it in for a Detroit touchdown.
43:30Lions brought him back on a one-year deal.
43:33Veteran, backup, free agent.
43:36He snaps here and there the last few years in the end zone here.
43:40And it's always about the finish, right?
43:44With Dan Campbell, it's like when we give you that line of scrimmage,
43:48it is up to you to take it the rest of the way.
43:50And they just have so many guys.
43:52You know, we saw Craig Reynolds quite a bit at the end of last year
43:56because of the Montgomery knee injury.
43:5898 carries there in the final three.
44:02So, he's a guy that they trust in big situations.
44:06Jake Bates went from the end zone here.
44:09From the UFL to a good kicker for the Lions last year.
44:13Adds the extra point.
44:1514-7.
44:17The back end of the 15.
44:19Pro, 8 Pro Bowl, all-decade team in the 2000s.
44:21No tight end.
44:23Caught more touchdowns than Antonio Gates.
44:25And it's putting this on the ground.
44:27That ball hit shy of the target area.
44:29Thus, the ball will come out to the 40-yard line.
44:33Illegal kickoff short of the landing zone.
44:35The ball will be placed at the 40-yard line.
44:37First down, Los Angeles.
44:39Man, they're testing us here tonight.
44:40All right, we're ready to roll.
44:41Melissa Stark is with Antonio Gates.
44:43Yes, and Mike, you'll appreciate this.
44:45All of his friends down here are basketball players.
44:47Because he is the first ever player to go into the Hall of Fame that did not play college football.
44:54What a journey.
44:55What does it mean to join this prestigious group?
44:57Well, it's football heaven.
44:59You think about the things that you've got to do, the layers, the year after year.
45:03To be able to get to this space is just an unbelievable experience, an unbelievable accomplishment.
45:07So, like I said, this is my moment, but it's my turn to say a thank you to all the people who have poured into me,
45:13who helped me along my journey.
45:15And that's what it's all about, is giving back to those who helped you along the way.
45:19But the NBA was the original dream.
45:21You played basketball about 30 miles from here at Kent State.
45:25How did basketball help your football career?
45:28Well, it gave me the natural catching ability.
45:32Because I was used to going against guys 6'9", 6'10", if you will.
45:36And going into the NFL, I had guys a lot smaller.
45:39And I was used to creating space on guys that was a lot bigger.
45:42So, I think to me, that's why tight ends in basketball, players are good tight ends.
45:47Because they are used to doing things that's natural to playing the position tight end.
45:51Catching the ball at its highest point, creating space.
45:54But the only difference is that now guys are 5'11", 5'10", 6'10", and I was used to doing it because guys 6'8", 6'9".
46:00So, it made a big difference for me and it allowed me to flourish in the game of football.
46:04Well, and Mike just mentioned it, a record you still hold today in 2017.
46:09You broke the all-time touchdown record for tight ends.
46:12Can you walk us through that play and what it meant to you?
46:17Well, obviously, we've been preparing for this moment for a couple of weeks because they wouldn't throw me the ball when he was on the road the week before that.
46:24So, we wanted to do it at home in Los Angeles.
46:27But I think, for me, it was just about the game itself.
46:30I always play the play and play in the moment.
46:32The best players usually adapt when the circumstances come up.
46:35I didn't pre-read anything.
46:37It looked like cover four.
46:38I wasn't sure if it was cover two, cover six.
46:40And all I try to do is use my natural ability to make the decision.
46:44And I think that's what good players do.
46:46They make the necessary adjustment.
46:48It's all about adapting.
46:49I've seen the guy.
46:50I felt like I had a little bit of leverage on him.
46:52And that's why I've always made plays in the red zone.
46:55But that was a very emotional moment for you.
46:57You told me you cried.
46:58I did.
46:59I don't know if it was my crying or the birds that flew over the top.
47:03But my eyes got really watery for some strange reason.
47:06And I believe it was because of the moment.
47:08And guys were, like, hugging me and jumping on top of me.
47:11But it was just the idea of all the hard work was underneath the surface that don't nobody see.
47:17And when you see all those things come to fruition and you make a catch and be the all-time leader in the history of the game.
47:24And you didn't even play college football.
47:26I mean, you just think about all the things you had to go through to get to that point.
47:31And I think that's where the emotions come in at.
47:33Well, congratulations.
47:34Enjoy the weekend.
47:35I'm sure there are going to be a lot more emotional moments in the days to come.
47:39Absolutely.
47:40I'm looking forward to it.
47:41That's for sure.
47:42Enjoy.
47:44Enjoy the watch.
47:45He was the guy that really created the box out openings.
47:49You know, when in rebounding where you box out, you create.
47:52He's talking about creating space.
47:54And he was really one of the best I have ever seen when he got down.
47:59Defense.
48:00Five yard penalty from the prison spot.
48:02Automatic first down.
48:04And got that body position.
48:07It was almost impossible.
48:08So then the debate started.
48:10What do you do?
48:11You've got a safety.
48:12He's not big enough to get through him.
48:14You got a linebacker.
48:15He's not fast enough to stay with him.
48:17And so that's the reason he still holds the record for most touchdowns.
48:21And so many of them from Phillip Rivers as well.
48:23So.
48:24Yeah.
48:25And he works in IFP just like I did.
48:27It's a power.
48:28Penalty on the Lions.
48:30Dennis Rakstrom for illegal hands to the face.
48:33So the Chargers continue this drive.
48:36Pick up the first down.
48:37Trey Lance has had a good half here.
48:39He throws in the middle.
48:40And it's caught to the 18-yard line by Tucker Fisk.
48:46How about that?
48:47Tucker Fisk, first of all, I only think of him really as a blocker.
48:50But watch this sizzler right here from Trey Lance.
48:54Anticipates the throw right behind the back shoulder of the inside linebacker there.
49:01Perfectly timed.
49:03You've got to be happy for Trey Lance.
49:05It's humiliating.
49:06For them to San Francisco trade up, give up three picks, all the things.
49:11It doesn't work out.
49:12It doesn't work out in Dallas.
49:13And now he's coming here and he's trying to establish something.
49:17And he's been doing pretty well out here tonight.
49:19A couple of runs as we were talking with Antonio Gates.
49:22By Naheem Miller-Hines.
49:24Sixth year in the league.
49:26Was with the Colts for four years.
49:28Then to Buffalo.
49:29Really productive as a running back.
49:30Then a returner to punt and to kick off returns for touchdown.
49:34Then July of 2023 jet ski accident.
49:37Injured hasn't played the last two years.
49:40And it was apparently one of his good friends.
49:42And he was not even moving.
49:44He was just sitting on the jet ski.
49:46And here he is two years later.
49:48We were talking to Omarion Hampton about that a little bit.
49:51He said, but this guy just pours everything from him into us.
49:54Two-minute warning.
49:56Here picks career sacks.
49:57Jared Allen.
49:58One of the four going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
50:01He was dinner in the show.
50:03Yes, he was.
50:04Yes, he was.
50:05He was dinner in the show.
50:07Here from Jared here momentarily.
50:09Lions had a nearly ten-minute drive in this second quarter.
50:14Chargers responding here.
50:15And Lance walking it up top for Trey Harris.
50:19Their draft pick incomplete.
50:20Covered by DiCaprio Boodle.
50:22Here's Melissa.
50:23All those introductions.
50:25And it's now Jared Allen Hall of Famer.
50:27Yeah, I'm just glad my face isn't as fat as it was in those first couple of videos.
50:32My goodness.
50:33That was back with Marty Ball.
50:34I had to be a little heavier to take on the power.
50:36You look great.
50:38You did not shy away from the fact that you were very disappointed you didn't get into the Hall of Fame last year.
50:43But what were your emotions this year when you finally got in?
50:46Well, it was always, it was always elation, right?
50:48I think the biggest, the problem was, is for like 49 weeks of the year, I just, I don't care about it.
50:54And then for three weeks, they make you care about it until you get super competitive.
50:58So, you know, when you're a first ballot finalist and it takes you five years to get in,
51:04you start having at least an expectation.
51:06And so you kind of know when the call is going to come, when the knock's going to come.
51:09So this year, I prepared myself for the knock because, well, I saw Steve Hutchinson driving up my long driveway and knew it was coming.
51:16But yeah, emotion-wise, I just kind of, I'm just taking it as it comes.
51:20I'm just enjoying the moments, trying to spend as much time with my family as I can.
51:23And the moments I love the most is being around the other Hall of Famers.
51:27It's the intimate moments you get when you just get to, you know, share stories.
51:31You get to listen, you know, and talk to guys that either your paths would never cross or that you competed against so much and now you're in the same way.
51:39Well, now we're going to wait and make you wait a little bit longer.
51:41We've got to throw it back to Mike. We'll get back to you on the other side of the break.
51:44Keiondre Lambert-Smith on the business end of that Trey Lance touchdown pass.
51:48Jared Allen pass rush may have gotten to Lance.
51:51But he stands in there and fights the fifth-round pick out of Auburn, who they love in Charger Land.
51:55More Jared Allen when we come back.
51:59Come with the last two MVPs.
52:01Cannot wait to get to Orchard Park for that.
52:04All coming up, Toyota halftime.
52:06How good has Trey Lance looked here, Chris?
52:09MVP of the first half, for sure, for me.
52:13He's Lovett catching the line drive kick at the three.
52:16The seventh-round pick for the Lions will be knocked down at the 24-yard line.
52:21Back to that touchdown he threw.
52:23Yeah, and Hall of Fame games, sort of the unwritten rule is you don't send a lot of all-out blitzes.
52:28Well, heck with that rule.
52:29We're going to send everybody here.
52:31And Trey Lance, just as cool as he could be,
52:34and you could see the trust that he has in Keiondre Lambert-Smith,
52:39the draft pick out of the fifth round.
52:41And that sort of quickness and speed is really coming into play.
52:46But I can't emphasize enough what you were seeing out of Trey Lance here.
52:51I mean, this is a much more polished version of him.
52:54And, yes, the starters aren't out there, but give him credit.
52:58Kyle Allen start a two-minute drive for the Lions.
53:00Lovett falls down.
53:01It's incomplete.
53:02Back to Melissa with Jared Allen.
53:03Jared, you told me that the late Derek Thomas was your motivation earlier in your career.
53:08Why?
53:09Because when you get drafted to the Chiefs, you're in his shadow.
53:12So you either got to rise up and try to compete with that or you fold.
53:15And I respected him so much, watched so much film of him.
53:19And to be worth your salt in that building, that was the standard.
53:23So I was just trying to live up to that.
53:24All right.
53:25We have to talk about the mullet.
53:26Yeah.
53:27Right?
53:28How did that become your signature hairstyle?
53:29So my financial guy, he rocked the mullet when he was in college.
53:33And so long story short, we made a bet to see if we had the best mullet by tax day.
53:37Clearly, I won.
53:38I rocked it.
53:39You know, it took all the attention away from my ugly face.
53:42And, you know, we just crushed it.
53:44Is your bust in the Hall of Fame going to have it?
53:47Absolutely.
53:48I think I'm like the only second mullet that's going to rock it.
53:50Yeah.
53:51Got it.
53:52Okay.
53:53And then you and I talked about your sacks, right?
53:56136 sacks in your career.
53:58You told me you have two favorites.
54:00What are they?
54:01Oh, I love hitting all quarterbacks because they're all a little pompous, you know?
54:04And so we got to bring them down a notch.
54:06But Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, arguably two of the best quarterbacks to ever play the
54:11game.
54:12So Peyton Manning, my one and only sack on him.
54:15And then Tom Brady, I think was the first play of the game on Sunday or Monday Night Football.
54:18Sunday Night Football, I believe, or Monday Night Football.
54:20So pretty pumped about that.
54:22Here's the other one right here.
54:23Oh, yeah.
54:24There we go.
54:25That was their fault for leaving me one-on-one with a tight end.
54:27They should have known better.
54:29Okay.
54:30And back to the mullet, right?
54:31Because we want to do a who wore it better in sports.
54:35Absolutely.
54:36Right?
54:37We're going to let you be the judge.
54:38Here we have it.
54:39Oh, God.
54:40I mean, Bosworth was, I mean, iconic, right?
54:42Oh, my goodness.
54:43I'm going to go with Yager just because, or Agassi, sorry, because of the fact that,
54:48I mean, what he did in the sport of tennis was revolutionary.
54:51And tennis is kind of that bougie sport.
54:53Yeah.
54:54So to rock a mullet in a bougie sport like that, hockey is expected.
54:57So I'm going to go with Agassi.
54:59You know, I can never vote for myself, ever.
55:01Well, we love it.
55:02It was quite memorable.
55:03And congratulations to you.
55:05Very exciting weekend.
55:06And we appreciate it.
55:07Thank you so much.
55:08Appreciate you.
55:09Congrats, Jared.
55:10So happy for you.
55:11Are you going to do a lasso on the stage when you get inducted on Saturday?
55:14Maybe, but I don't know if my old back will be able to get me back up on the stage.
55:17Come on, man.
55:18You've got to bring it out for us.
55:19One more time, I'm going to try to do it.
55:21Bring it out for us.
55:22Just someone help me if I can't get back up.
55:24Understood.
55:25Congrats, man.
55:26And the mullet and the mustache together would have gotten my vote.
55:29Just, you know.
55:3057-yard kick.
55:31Well, we were talking Harold Lee.
55:33He shared with us that he came as a kid.
55:36His dad, Jack, who's here tonight, brought John and Jim over to see the Hall of Fame
55:41when Jack was coaching college football in the state of Ohio.
55:44What a first half.
55:45It's been for Trey Lance handing it off here with a minute to go in this first half
55:50and a run with Vidal.
55:52Gain of five.
55:54We'll see if they're going to jump on the ball here or huddle up.
55:59No huddle.
56:00I would say they're going to come out of this first half pretty happy.
56:04Now, granted, they did have a few more starters in there.
56:08But what put it over the top really was the play of Trey Lance, no question.
56:13He was tremendous.
56:15But defensively made some plays back there, too.
56:17Tony Jefferson with the interception.
56:19Nico Reed with a huge play to get this game started.
56:22So both sides of the ball, very good.
56:25Naeem Miller-Hines with the carry.
56:27It's going to bring this first half in all likelihood to a close.
56:31The clock runs down.
56:37Tackle made by the Lions' Ahmed Hassanin, who is a player out of Boise State, who they're hoping to see a lot of sixth-round pick.
56:45Of course, the Lions looking for somebody opposite Aiden Hutchinson and some depth in that defensive end spot.
56:52We've hit the half.
56:5521 to 7.
56:56Chargers get the ball to get the ball.
56:59Jake Bates will kick it off.
57:01créd much, brother.
57:02Paul-Die guerrief.
57:04Now do you see that?
57:06Christ Bates told me this is John Jeffrey T hypothese, based on the B-error.
57:09Now do you hear us from theioniального 나가maf future?
57:10Professor?
57:12That's what we've made going on for tonight?
57:14Now do you know the question?
57:15Dr Cameron Hammond?
57:16Why does it have fun for you?
57:18Dr Patrick Hammond?
57:19I think that it
