00:00Tressie Ellis Rose has perfected the skill of solo travel, embarking on journeys by herself for almost three decades.
00:09As a single woman without kids, Rose mentions that she will fly off to an amazing location wherever she desires, even if it means going solo.
00:19And enjoy my own company.
00:21I am sharing my particular version of solo travel, which is not about adventure.
00:25It's not about sort of veering off the path and pushing myself to do things I don't normally do.
00:30But how can I experience my own company in a joyful way and a holistic way and still be in beautiful places and be introduced to things that I hadn't experienced before?
00:42Her advice for those traveling alone includes extensive planning, becoming comfortable with dining out solo and emphasizing safety when crafting an itinerary.
00:52Once you've decided what kind of experience you want to have, then ask yourself how, to the best of your ability, can you plan that safely?
01:01If you are a Black woman, if you are a woman, if you are LGBTQIA, if you are non-binary, if you, any of those areas, if you have, are differently abled,
01:10or any of your areas that might leave you vulnerable in a foreign place, make sure you do the best diligence you can to make sure you're going somewhere that can create a sense of safety for you.
01:25The star of Blackish and Girlfriends has launched a new three-part docuseries on the Roku channel titled Solo Traveling with Tracy Ellis Rose.
01:35My mind is that I gain a muscle strength around being comfortable, being uncomfortable, and holding space for myself in a way that I get to bring back into my life.
01:52And it helps me in my daily life, because I've gone, it's like when you, you know, a baseball player swings with two bats, and then by the time you get to the one bat, it feels lighter.
02:02And so when you get back into your regular day life, when uncomfortable things happen, I have muscle memory of I know how to walk through this on my own and still find joy in it.
02:13Tracy Ellis Rose commits to at least one trip alone each year in the company of a film crew.
