The Sleeping Tiger is a 1954 British film noir directed by Joseph Losey and starring Alexis Smith, Dirk Bogarde and Alexander Knox. It was Losey's first British feature, which he directed under the pseudonym of Victor Hanbury due to being blacklisted in the McCarthy Era. It was shot at Walton Studios and on location in London. The film's sets were designed by the art director John Stoll. It was released by Anglo-Amalgamated while in America it was distributed by Astor Pictures.
Plot: When brash young thug Frank Clemmons (Dirk Bogarde) attempts to rob psychiatrist Clive Esmond (Alexander Knox), the doctor surprisingly gains the upper hand. Instead of sending Frank to jail, Clive offers to have the criminal stay at his home, where he'll attempt to reform the delinquent via in-depth analysis. Settling into the doctor's house, Clive meets Esmond's wife, Glenda (Alexis Smith), who initially dislikes her coarse guest. When Glenda begins to fall for Frank, intense conflict ensues.

00:00:00.
00:00:30I don't know.
00:02:00I'm glad you're back.
00:02:18Thank you, Sally.
00:02:32Are you waiting to see Dr. Esmond?
00:02:48Yes.
00:02:52Oh, I see.
00:02:54I'm Mrs. Esmond.
00:02:56Won't you sit down?
00:02:58Oh, I see.
00:02:59Yes.
00:03:00Why'd you leave a patient in the sitting room, Sally?
00:03:18He isn't a patient.
00:03:19He's staying here in the house.
00:03:21Oh?
00:03:22Where?
00:03:23In the doctor's room.
00:03:24Oh, I see.
00:03:25Yes.
00:03:26And he's to be treated just like one of the family.
00:03:29Really?
00:03:30Of course, it's not for me to speak against the doctor, but that man's a thief.
00:03:33He's a criminal.
00:03:34How do you know?
00:03:35I heard the doctor tell Miss Duncan this morning.
00:03:39He held the doctor up with a gun.
00:03:41And instead of being put in jail where he belongs, he's staying in the house for six months to undergo...
00:03:45Therapy.
00:03:46And you don't approve?
00:03:48It's not up to me to approve, but I'm not staying in the house with a gunman.
00:03:52I'm giving him my notice.
00:03:54When do you leave?
00:03:57The sooner the better.
00:04:18The sooner the better.
00:04:19The sooner the better.
00:04:24Hello, Carol.
00:04:25Is Clive around?
00:04:26Glenda!
00:04:27We didn't expect you.
00:04:28Why, Doctor?
00:04:29Clive, is this in me?
00:04:30It's fairly obvious.
00:04:31Glenda!
00:04:32Hello, Clive.
00:04:34What happened?
00:04:35Bad weather chased you home?
00:04:37No.
00:04:38Paris was beautiful and I was bored.
00:04:39So was I.
00:04:40Always am when you're away.
00:04:42This time you must have been really bored.
00:04:44Oh, then you've heard.
00:04:46Yes.
00:04:47And Sally's given notice.
00:04:49She doesn't approve of common thieves as house guests.
00:04:53I'm not sure I do either.
00:04:55Look, Glenda.
00:04:57It's one thing to practice psychology in a prison ward.
00:05:00It's something else again to have your patient in ideal circumstances.
00:05:03The boy's young, he's intelligent.
00:05:05If I can find out what makes him tick, I may be able to straighten him out.
00:05:08The other way, well, it's a complete waste of a human being.
00:05:12If he goes to prison again, he's finished, I'm sure of that.
00:05:15Prison again?
00:05:16Yes.
00:05:17He has a record.
00:05:18I've had Carol on research all morning.
00:05:25Hmm.
00:05:27Pretty lurid stuff.
00:05:28Oh, yes.
00:05:29He's tough enough.
00:05:30But he's immature and unhappy and I think frightened under that hard shell of his.
00:05:35Frightened.
00:05:36Frightened.
00:05:37I'd say frightening.
00:05:38Robbery with violence.
00:05:40Assault.
00:05:41Robbery.
00:05:42How are his manners.
00:05:43Is he possible?
00:05:44Oddly enough, he's no slum product.
00:05:45Army family.
00:05:46Good school.
00:05:47That's what makes it so interesting.
00:05:48But if you don't like the idea, and I'm not at all keen on your doing the housework, I'll call it off.
00:05:51Why?
00:05:52You know you've had your heart set on something like this for years.
00:05:54Besides, we've never had a criminal for a house guest.
00:05:58At least one we knew about.
00:05:59May be interesting.
00:06:00May be dangerous too.
00:06:01Don't worry about me.
00:06:02He doesn't frighten me in the least.
00:06:03What does frighten me is the thought of replacing Sally.
00:06:04A what?
00:06:05Drink before dinner.
00:06:06I'll be right with you.
00:06:07Thank you, darling.
00:06:08Don't mention it.
00:06:09Don't mention it.
00:06:10.
00:06:15I'll be right with you.
00:06:16Thank you, darling.
00:06:17Don't mention it.
00:06:22A what?
00:06:24A nice little boy.
00:06:26Happy birthday, darling.
00:06:27I'll be right with you.
00:06:28Don't mention it.
00:06:30.
00:06:35A happy birthday of the Monk.
00:06:38Sorry, Mr. Clemens, I've been away until you know who you were.
00:06:47But now you do.
00:06:48Yes.
00:06:50I hope you've been made comfortable.
00:06:53Why?
00:06:56Why?
00:06:59Because you're a guest in my home.
00:07:01A guest?
00:07:03The doctor and I made a deal.
00:07:05This is better than going to jail.
00:07:06I pretend it's anything else.
00:07:09I'm not a guest, Mrs. Esmond. I'm a prisoner.
00:07:15Ah, so you've met already.
00:07:17Yes, twice.
00:07:18Good, good. Cherry or whiskey, Frank?
00:07:22Whiskey and water.
00:07:25Whiskey and water, it is.
00:07:26You mean reading?
00:07:28Oh, just browsing.
00:07:31Browsing?
00:07:33You have to read that one.
00:07:36I've read it.
00:07:38Do you do much reading?
00:07:42Not as much as I used to.
00:07:44That's my problem, too.
00:07:46Do you like sports?
00:07:48No.
00:07:49No shooting? No fishing? Too bad.
00:07:52Do you ride?
00:07:53No.
00:07:54You ought to. Mrs. Esmond's a great writer.
00:07:57Perhaps Glenda would take you with her sometime, hmm?
00:07:59Perhaps.
00:08:02Darling, I'd have cancelled the silly lecture like a shot if I'd known you were coming back.
00:08:10You never cancelled a lecture in your life.
00:08:12Oh, he did once, Glenda. Remember the year of the big fog?
00:08:16Telephone for Mr. Clements.
00:08:17Excuse me.
00:08:33Hello?
00:08:34What a night you've given me.
00:08:36I followed you there.
00:08:37Waited around all day.
00:08:38Took me forever to find out the phone number.
00:08:41What's happened?
00:08:41Don't call me here.
00:08:42A friend of mine.
00:09:00Somebody you'd like to see?
00:09:02No, not particularly.
00:09:04What I meant was, feel free to bring them here.
00:09:07Any of my friends?
00:09:08Any of them.
00:09:09What if one of them should be in trouble?
00:09:13What sort of trouble?
00:09:16When your friends are in trouble, you don't ask why or what.
00:09:20You help them.
00:09:21Ask anybody you like.
00:09:23For the next six months, I'd like you to consider this your home.
00:09:27And what if one of my friends should be a woman?
00:09:34How would Mrs. Esmond feel if I brought a woman to the house?
00:09:39Ask anybody you like.
00:09:46Don't worry.
00:09:48I won't.
00:09:54Bye.
00:09:55Be brilliant.
00:09:56Am I ever less?
00:09:59Sure you'll be all right?
00:10:00Of course.
00:10:01Good.
00:10:02All my levels.
00:10:02Or 12.
00:10:03Come on.
00:10:03Come on.
00:10:03Come on.
00:10:04Come on.
00:10:05Come on.
00:10:06Come on.
00:10:09Very busy man, the doctor.
00:10:32Yes.
00:10:36Elections.
00:10:37Rights.
00:10:40Hmm.
00:10:44I read one of his books this afternoon.
00:10:47In it, he said that childhood's the thing that counts your parents and children.
00:10:53But he's wrong.
00:10:57People are born the way they are.
00:10:59Well, so you do talk after all.
00:11:06You're an American, aren't you?
00:11:08Yes.
00:11:10And you're a little Caesar.
00:11:15More coffee?
00:11:17No, thank you.
00:11:18A gentleman occasionally lights a lady's cigarette.
00:11:36And a lady doesn't make a point of it if he hasn't.
00:11:39Yes.
00:11:49Hurt yourself?
00:11:51My sprain, my wrist.
00:11:53Hmm?
00:11:58Of course, Clive's army training.
00:12:01Unlucky you, he ran into the wrong man.
00:12:04Because Clive's quite a guy, even if he does write books.
00:12:06Congratulations, Mrs. Esmond.
00:12:12Are you sure you won't have some more coffee?
00:12:14Quite sure.
00:12:19Would you have used that gun on Clive if he hadn't gotten it away from you?
00:12:27No.
00:12:30Then why do you carry it?
00:12:33Why do you ask?
00:12:37Does it fascinate you?
00:12:40No.
00:12:42It makes me sick.
00:12:45I despise hoodlums of any kind.
00:12:48They're not one bit glamorous.
00:12:50They're just stupid little animals asking for cages.
00:12:54I can respect a rebel if it's intelligent rebellion, but I hate stupidity.
00:13:01Is that all, Mrs. Esmond?
00:13:03No.
00:13:05I don't mind this experiment of Clive's, even though I think it's a waste of time.
00:13:10If it interests him, it's all right with me and I'll help him all I can.
00:13:13Take you riding or teach you hymns.
00:13:16But this is my home, too.
00:13:18And there's one thing I won't tolerate.
00:13:20And that's rudeness.
00:13:22And the kind you've showed all day or bad manners of any sort.
00:13:25I hope that's clear to you, Mr. Clements.
00:13:29Good night.
00:13:55All right, I won't bite you.
00:14:01Nice people, the Esmonds.
00:14:02Too nice.
00:14:03Soft in the head to have you staying in the house.
00:14:07What do you mean?
00:14:08You know what I mean.
00:14:10I know all about you, Mr. Clements.
00:14:13You've seen my picture in the papers, have you?
00:14:15Picture in the papers, indeed.
00:14:17I know why you're here.
00:14:19You ought to be in jail right now.
00:14:20Yes, I know I ought, but I'm not.
00:14:23And I'm beginning to be rather glad that I'm not.
00:14:27What about some coffee?
00:14:31My orders are to tidy up.
00:14:33I'm a guest in the house.
00:14:35We're going to see rather a lot of each other, Sally.
00:14:38We ought to be friends.
00:14:40That's what you think.
00:14:41I've given him my notice I should be out of this house in a week.
00:14:43Because of me?
00:14:46Yes, because of you.
00:14:48Aren't servants rather hard to get these days?
00:14:52Yes, very.
00:14:53Madam won't like doing her own work in the future,
00:14:55and the likes of you should certainly wait on themselves.
00:15:01I don't think so, Sally.
00:15:04I don't think you'll be leaving at all,
00:15:05because I wouldn't like that.
00:15:09I'll clear up that mess,
00:15:11and get me some coffee.
00:15:18Mrs. Esmond.
00:15:33Good morning.
00:15:35Good morning.
00:15:36I'd like to go riding with you,
00:15:38if you'd let me.
00:15:41If you like.
00:15:48You were seven when your mother died?
00:15:59Yes.
00:16:01Must have been a burden on your father.
00:16:03Yes, but he was used to that.
00:16:05After all, he was an army man all his life.
00:16:07We had a good relationship.
00:16:09We were more like brothers than father and son.
00:16:11Athletic type, was he?
00:16:13Yes.
00:16:14Was he disappointed by your lack of interest in sports?
00:16:17No, I don't think he cared.
00:16:20How'd you get on with your stepmother?
00:16:22Fine.
00:16:23She was a fine woman.
00:16:45What did your father do when you were kicked out of that school?
00:16:51Nothing.
00:16:53He was disappointed, but he didn't mind.
00:16:56And your stepmother?
00:16:58She was a...
00:17:00She was a good-natured woman.
00:17:02She left those things to him.
00:17:04You really liked her?
00:17:05Yes.
00:17:07I've told you.
00:17:08I've told you a dozen times.
00:17:09Yes.
00:17:10Yes.
00:17:13So you have.
00:17:40That was fine.
00:17:41I enjoyed it.
00:17:42Yes, sir.
00:17:43Coming along.
00:18:01That's not necessary, Frank.
00:18:03What?
00:18:05Oh, I'm sorry.
00:18:06I think I'll stop writing for a while.
00:18:11Why?
00:18:13Oh, I'm tired of it, I suppose.
00:18:15It's not the writing, is it, Mrs. Esmond?
00:18:18It's me.
00:18:20You don't like me, do you?
00:18:21You don't matter to me at all, Frank.
00:18:23Not even when you try to paw me in what you think is that cute, casual way.
00:18:28What I don't like is what you stand for.
00:18:31And what do I stand for?
00:18:33Something sick.
00:18:34You sound just like your husband.
00:18:37Clive thinks you've had a bad childhood.
00:18:40I don't think that's a good enough excuse.
00:18:42Lots of people come from broken homes.
00:18:45I did.
00:18:47I came from two homes thousands of miles apart, and I was a stranger in both of them.
00:18:51My mother hated me, literally.
00:18:54But I made a life for myself just the same.
00:19:04All right, you've told me, now I'll tell you.
00:19:18You're a phony, Mrs. Esmond.
00:19:20You're all safe and sound and smooth on the outside.
00:19:23You've got everything you want, that's what you tell yourself.
00:19:24But inside you've got nothing.
00:19:27You're empty.
00:19:29You're hungry.
00:19:30Hungry.
00:19:31That's what I said.
00:19:32I know your sort.
00:19:33I know you so well.
00:19:35You act as if nothing could shake you, but in actual fact you're a tight wire.
00:19:39And it wouldn't take very much to break you.
00:19:41Not very much at all.
00:19:42Not very much at all.
00:20:12You know.
00:20:13Malaya.
00:20:15Not very much at all.
00:20:17I've just been hoping.
00:20:19To meet the light, the light of the light, the light of the light, the light of the light, the light of the light.
00:20:24And any other light isada and the light of the light, the light of the light.
00:20:28Are you still there?
00:20:31It's like a light of the light.
00:20:35That's why I don't have a light.
00:20:37It's a light of light.
00:20:39One or two years ago, that's why I brought my heart.
00:22:43Hello?
00:22:44Are you coming riding today?
00:22:59Yes, sure.
00:23:09Give me five minutes.
00:23:11I'm curious, Inspector.
00:23:26How did the police find out Frank Clements was living here?
00:23:30Oh, we have ways.
00:23:31Of course.
00:23:32I take it you don't approve.
00:23:34I wouldn't say that.
00:23:36We know of your professional interest in these cases, and in view of his record, we thought it might be a good idea to have a chat about it.
00:23:42Good.
00:23:43Let's chat.
00:23:44Been behaving himself, has he?
00:23:47Of course.
00:23:48Kept regular hours.
00:23:49I've had an eye on him at all times.
00:23:51That's all what I asked, Doctor.
00:23:53Look, Inspector.
00:23:54If I'm to win the boy's confidence, he's got to be given a certain amount of freedom.
00:23:58But on this quarrel, the police don't want to be unfair.
00:24:02We like to see cases straightened out and make good.
00:24:05But in our opinion, Clements is far too dangerous a man to be under your roof.
00:24:09You're entitled to your opinion, Inspector.
00:24:12We can't do anything about it.
00:24:15We can't, of course.
00:24:16Unless, of course, it becomes necessary.
00:24:18Well, that's fair enough.
00:24:20And I hope you'll forgive my bad temper.
00:24:22Of course, Doctor.
00:24:24Don't you want to see Frank?
00:24:26You'll be here any minute.
00:24:27No, I just wanted to see you.
00:24:28I'm glad you did.
00:24:34Do you mind if I don't see you out?
00:24:35Not at all.
00:24:36Bye, Inspector.
00:24:37Goodbye, Doctor.
00:24:38Oh, Inspector.
00:24:43Yes?
00:24:48Good day, sir.
00:24:49Good day.
00:24:50Don't look so unhappy, girl.
00:24:59I'm not unhappy.
00:25:02But I am worried.
00:25:04What about?
00:25:05That policeman.
00:25:07Frank sneaking out.
00:25:09Everything.
00:25:10I don't like it either.
00:25:11He's not easy.
00:25:12And he's clever.
00:25:14Sometimes he's like a stone wall.
00:25:17Give it up, Clive.
00:25:20Give it up?
00:25:21No.
00:25:31Friend of yours was here.
00:25:34Yes, I know.
00:25:36I saw him.
00:25:41Simmons.
00:25:46Are you going to give it up?
00:25:47No.
00:25:48No.
00:25:49How was the riding today?
00:25:51All right.
00:25:52Fender keeps telling me how well you're doing.
00:25:55But riding four hours a day and staying out late won't mix.
00:26:02You know about it.
00:26:08I'm sorry.
00:26:09I know I shouldn't have gone out, but I was in a mood.
00:26:13I had to get out or explode.
00:26:14I don't mind.
00:26:16What I do mind is that you've been lying to me right along.
00:26:21What do you mean?
00:26:22You've lied about your childhood, about your relationship with your father and mother.
00:26:24She didn't die.
00:26:25She ran away.
00:26:26I know.
00:26:27I've checked.
00:26:28Now, why, Frank?
00:26:30Why do you lie?
00:26:31I'm sorry.
00:26:34I'm sorry, but these aren't things I like to talk about.
00:26:39Why not?
00:26:41You hated your father, didn't you?
00:26:44Yes.
00:26:53Yes, all right, I did.
00:26:55Why?
00:26:57Because he made my mother leave me.
00:26:59Leave you?
00:27:00Leave him, then.
00:27:01He drove her to it.
00:27:02How?
00:27:04Because he was a cheat.
00:27:07Because he was mean, petty, and cruel.
00:27:10Because he was a bully and a pompous hypocrite.
00:27:13He even had my stepmother on a string before my mother left.
00:27:17And what was your stepmother like?
00:27:20Tall, blonde, very smart.
00:27:23All ice on the outside and rotten inside.
00:27:28You didn't like her much either, did you?
00:27:31I hated her.
00:27:33And she hated me too.
00:27:36But I got even with them.
00:27:38How?
00:27:40That's none of your business.
00:27:43How did you get even with them, Frank?
00:27:46It's none of your business.
00:27:48Leave me alone.
00:27:49Leave me alone.
00:28:19Have you seen some of these?
00:28:20I was a fool.
00:28:21I didn't even know.
00:28:22You can't.
00:28:23I don't think I was a fool.
00:28:25Have you done?
00:28:27No.
00:28:29I'm done.
00:28:31I'm done.
00:28:33I'm done.
00:28:35You're a fool.
00:28:36You're a fool.
00:28:38You're a fool.
00:28:40You're a fool.
00:28:42You're a fool.
00:28:44You're a fool.
00:28:45Oh, my God.
00:29:15Come on.
00:29:45Come on.
00:30:15Jim, here you are.
00:30:21That's a good talk.
00:30:27Hi, Carol.
00:30:28Oh, I wouldn't go in just now, Glenda.
00:30:30There's a policeman there with Clive and Frank.
00:30:34I hope I'm not interrupting.
00:30:36My wife, Inspector.
00:30:37Not at all, Mrs. Esmond.
00:30:38I was just telling Clements here how lucky he is.
00:30:41I didn't know just how lucky either.
00:30:45Is there anything else you want to ask me?
00:30:47Oh, not much.
00:30:49Oh, I did want to ask you.
00:30:51Do you know who Menzies, the jewellers in Billiard Street?
00:30:53No.
00:30:54Hmm.
00:30:56Where were you last night?
00:30:57Here.
00:30:58All night?
00:30:59Yes.
00:31:00Is that correct?
00:31:02I know nothing to the contrary.
00:31:05All right.
00:31:07You've got a great chance here, Clements.
00:31:11Don't spoil it.
00:31:13It might help if you didn't try to pin it onto me.
00:31:16Every time somebody breaks into Menzies or somewhere.
00:31:20Good day, Doctor.
00:31:21Good day, Inspector.
00:31:22Good day, Mrs. Esmond.
00:31:26Oh, Clements.
00:31:28I didn't say anything about Menzies being broken into, did I?
00:31:31But it was.
00:31:33I didn't do it.
00:31:43I wouldn't do anything like that to you.
00:31:46All right, Frank.
00:31:54Do you believe him, Clements?
00:31:56Do you?
00:31:57He couldn't be that stupid.
00:31:59I hope not.
00:32:01What do you think of him, Glenda?
00:32:03Is he worth saving?
00:32:06Do you like him?
00:32:07Yes.
00:32:09He's an ordinary.
00:32:10He's got courage.
00:32:13Under that bravado of his, there's something rather appealing.
00:32:17Hmm.
00:32:18I don't think he left the house.
00:32:21Let's forget it.
00:32:25Let's dine out tonight.
00:32:27Tonight?
00:32:29Oh, darling.
00:32:31Darling, I'm terribly sorry, but I promise you from next week on...
00:32:34Yes, I...
00:32:35I know.
00:32:50Be ready in a minute.
00:32:52Why don't you see what's on the evening papers downstairs?
00:32:54Okay.
00:33:00Find anything?
00:33:01Nothing special.
00:33:02There's a new western, that's all.
00:33:03That's all?
00:33:04That's all.
00:33:05It's pretty dull.
00:33:07I wanted to get out of the house tonight.
00:33:10Yes, I know how you feel.
00:33:11Do you?
00:33:13What would you do if you were on your own?
00:33:15Oh, I don't know.
00:33:18Go to the metro, I suppose.
00:33:21Metro? What's that?
00:33:22It's a club in Soho.
00:33:24Is it fun?
00:33:25Yes, I like it.
00:33:28Would I like it?
00:33:30No.
00:33:31Some of the men have no manners, the women are...
00:33:33Cheap blondes and cheap dresses?
00:33:36They read Vogue magazine, too.
00:33:38They just don't happen to have so much money.
00:33:40I'm sorry.
00:33:42Expensive dress, cheap remorse.
00:33:48Take me to the metro, Frank.
00:33:52Now, you don't mean that.
00:33:54Yes, I do.
00:33:56But you may not like it.
00:33:59I'll tell you if I don't.
00:34:01All right.
00:34:05But go upstairs and put on something...
00:34:07a little cheaper.
00:34:25eine sehr starke.
00:34:29Eine starke.
00:34:30Eine starke in den.
00:34:32Sie sind eh.
00:34:33Die sind so, sieh.
00:34:34Eine starke in den.
00:34:35Sie sind.
00:34:37Sie sind.

00:34:40Eine starke in den.
00:34:42Die ist.
00:34:45Sie sind.
00:34:47Sie sind.
00:34:51Sie sind.
00:34:53Sie sind.
00:35:25Poor Frank. Embarrassed, aren't you?
00:35:27Embarrassed? By what?
00:35:30Me.
00:35:32Why should I be?
00:35:33Well, dancing like this, I've never felt so self-conscious before.
00:35:40You always think people are watching you?
00:35:46I haven't heard music like this in years. It's exciting.
00:35:55Do you feel more at home now?
00:36:05What do you mean?
00:36:08As if you were dancing with one of your girlfriends.
00:36:12But you're not one of my girlfriends.
00:36:15No.
00:36:16You wouldn't like a girl like me, would you think?
00:36:19You're hurting me.
00:36:25Don't fool around, Glenda.
00:36:31You were right, Frank.
00:36:33I don't like it here.
00:36:35I'd like to leave.
00:36:36Hang on.
00:36:52Hampstead Gardens.
00:36:53Uh, as soon as possible, please.
00:36:57You going somewhere?
00:37:00Yes.
00:37:00why you know why because of me yes what a shame poor Mrs. Esmond will have to do all her own
00:37:12housework now sweeping dusting making beds what are you doing it's not very nice of you Sally
00:37:23especially when I asked you not to you can't stop me this is a free country
00:37:30I will ever tell you that
00:37:31I wish I were a man
00:38:00I'm
00:38:07I'm
00:38:09Someday we ought to run up to Scotland. No salmon water in the world like it.
00:38:39You seem to forget our bargain was for six months. Not forever.
00:38:44You haven't got much more to go. What's the matter, Frank?
00:38:47Oh, I don't know. Maybe I'm not cut out for the home life. Maybe it gets on my nerves.
00:38:53It's understandable, considering the kind of home your stepmother gave you.
00:38:57Why do you always bring her into it? It's almost as if you were implying there was something between us.
00:39:02Why do you always pretend she never existed?
00:39:04You never stop. You're worse than the police.
00:39:07Oh, come on, Frank. You've got intelligence enough to know I'm only trying to help you.
00:39:12I'll ask for your help. I'm here because otherwise I'd be in jail and right now I wouldn't mind being there.
00:39:18How was the fishing? Frank enjoy it?
00:39:31No. I didn't expect him to. Lately he resists anything that comes from me.
00:39:36Why do you say that?
00:39:37Superficially, I'd say that I've taken on the role of his father and he doesn't like me very much.
00:39:43You're discouraged?
00:39:45Well, it's not easy. You think he's been helped any?
00:39:48I don't know. Maybe it's wrong to tamper with people. Maybe he'd solve his own problems if he were left alone.
00:39:55So you think Frank should be left alone?
00:39:57How should I know? I'm not God.
00:40:00Meaning what I think I am?
00:40:02The halo fits put it on.
00:40:04Don't pretend you don't love winding people up like little toys.
00:40:09You think me?
00:40:10You never run.
00:40:11No muerte?
00:40:12Yeah.
00:40:13People are Sparkling.
00:40:14Got self.
00:40:15Big fat.
00:40:16My mother will see him.
00:40:17By the time he lives there.
00:40:18Mr. getting..
00:40:19I was really happy.
00:40:20I need extremes.

00:40:22There he was going on.
00:40:23I'm notологgew Fierry.
00:40:24Not just.
00:40:25I'm so profiting.
00:40:26I bako.
00:40:27Mr. getting carbs.
00:40:28You're too careful.
00:40:29I'm so nad잖아.
00:40:30Oh, I must be crazy.
00:41:00Why?
00:41:02Because you love me?
00:41:04Do I love you?
00:41:07To make it worse, I'm older than you are.
00:41:10What's a couple of years?
00:41:12Even a little older is too much for a woman.
00:41:15Not for you.
00:41:25Give me a cigarette.
00:41:30Frank, tell me the truth.
00:41:42Were you mixed up in that robbery?
00:41:44No.
00:41:45I've told you a dozen times.
00:41:48You wouldn't lie to me, would you?
00:41:50Oh, Glenda, don't brag.
00:41:52I may lie to you about some things, but not when I tell you that I love you.
00:41:59Good morning.
00:42:15Go away.
00:42:16Haven't you finished yet?
00:42:17I thought we could go for a drive.
00:42:18I'm busy, Frank.
00:42:19Well, do it later.
00:42:20I can't do it later.
00:42:21Please go away.
00:42:22Where to?
00:42:23Anywhere.
00:42:24Who come with me?
00:42:26I told you no.
00:42:27I've got a lot of work to do.
00:42:28All right.
00:42:29I'll stay and I'll help you.
00:42:30Oh, Frank, stop it.
00:42:31Will you leave me alone?
00:42:32Yes, if you let me stay with you, I want to be with you.
00:42:34You're incorrigible.
00:42:35What do you have to use long words for?
00:42:36Frank, I swear if you don't leave me alone, I'll scream.
00:42:38All right.
00:42:39Go ahead and scream.
00:42:40I'd like to hear you.
00:42:41You want him to hear?
00:42:42Why not?
00:42:43Let him hear.
00:42:44Go on, scream.
00:42:45Get up.
00:42:53You're right.
00:42:55I was trying to kiss her, so I gathered.
00:42:58He was just being silly, Clyde.
00:42:59No, not at all.
00:43:00You should feel honored, Doctor.
00:43:02I don't think you're funny, Frank.
00:43:04I'm sorry.
00:43:05I'd like an apology.
00:43:10I apologize, Mrs. Esmond.
00:43:12Get out, Frank.
00:43:14I'll talk to you later.
00:43:23Maybe it's time for him to go.
00:43:25Any time you like.
00:43:27Has this ever happened before?
00:43:30No.
00:43:31What brought it on?
00:43:33Are you trying to say I encouraged it?
00:43:35Of course not.
00:43:36I would like to know the background.
00:43:39You won't like it.
00:43:41Just the same.
00:43:42If you must know, he implied that you were neglecting me.
00:43:46That there might be something between you and Carol.
00:43:49Carol?
00:43:51He was looking for trouble asking for it.
00:43:53Just trying to annoy you through me.
00:43:55I should think that's perfectly obvious.
00:43:57Obvious or not, he certainly succeeded.
00:44:00Well, shall I get rid of him?
00:44:02That's up to you.
00:44:03I'd hate to give up on it at this point.
00:44:08Do anything you want.
00:44:14I think I'll beg off that hospital board meeting tonight.
00:44:18Oh, God.
00:44:19For heaven's sake, I can take care of myself.
00:44:21All right.
00:44:22All right.
00:44:23All right.
00:44:24That can't happen again, Frank.
00:44:51again Frank why not I'd have had it out with him if you had the nerve to go

00:47:37Oh, you bore me.
00:47:59Oh, my God.
00:48:29It's private business.
00:48:31It's to do with Miss Foster.
00:48:35Will you just wait there?
00:48:40Someone at the door to see the doctor about Sally.
00:48:42Trouble?
00:48:44Yeah, I think so.
00:48:45Get Clive.
00:48:47All right.
00:48:50I'm Mrs. Esmond.
00:48:51Please come in.
00:48:52Mr., uh...
00:48:58Bailey.
00:49:00Bailey.
00:49:02You've come about Sally.
00:49:03That's right, Mom.
00:49:05Perhaps I can help you.
00:49:07Well, I'd rather wait until the doctor gets here, Mom.
00:49:10If you like.
00:49:11How is Sally?
00:49:15She's quite well.
00:49:16Working?
00:49:17Yes, no difficulty about that.
00:49:20Oh, uh, this is Mr. Bailey, Clive.
00:49:22He's a friend of Sally's.
00:49:24We're going to be married.
00:49:25Oh, congratulations.
00:49:27Come along and sit down.
00:49:27No, thank you.
00:49:29Is this Frank Clements?
00:49:31Yes.
00:49:31It's about him and Sally.
00:49:33Yes?
00:49:34I've come here on Sally's behalf.
00:49:36It's about a certain matter that's got to be cleared up.
00:49:38I think you know what I mean.
00:49:40She was assaulted by this Frank Clements in your house.
00:49:43I only heard about it yesterday.
00:49:46I didn't know that.
00:49:48Well, it's true.
00:49:48Sally doesn't lie.
00:49:50When she told me, my impulse was to come and knock his block off.
00:49:52Well, here I am.
00:49:53I thought, no, that's too good for him.
00:49:55And much too risky.
00:49:56I thought the best way to deal with him is to put him where he belongs.
00:49:59I wanted to go to the police.
00:50:00But you came here instead.
00:50:01I just wanted you to know what I decided to do.
00:50:04Sally wanted to forget about the whole thing.
00:50:05She's scared of Clements, but I'm not scared.
00:50:07I want to see him in jail.
00:50:09But what's he supposed to have done?
00:50:10Well, he ruined her clothes and knocked her down.
00:50:12He wouldn't let her leave here.
00:50:13That's a lie!
00:50:13Sally doesn't lie.
00:50:14She's been terrified ever since she left here.
00:50:16Look, Mr. Bailey, there must be some practical intelligence.
00:50:20In all due respect, Doctor, I don't think I can...
00:50:21Oh, drop it, Bailey.
00:50:22Shut up, Frank.
00:50:23Go on, let him go on.
00:50:24You can see the type he is.
00:50:26Mr. Bailey, would you come along to my office for a minute?
00:50:30All right.
00:50:42So you see, Mr. Bailey,
00:50:45all of us are capable of anything given the right provocation.
00:50:50Clements had a childhood that drove him to the verge of killing.
00:50:53I'm trying to destroy his urge to hate and fight back.
00:51:02You must see, Mr. Bailey, that in you, in me,
00:51:06in the dark forest of every human personality,
00:51:10this is a tiger.
00:51:12A sleeping tiger.
00:51:13Well?
00:51:23I, um, persuaded him to forget it.
00:51:30Psychology pays off.
00:51:31Yeah.
00:51:33Was the girl telling the truth?
00:51:34Yes.
00:51:36Yes.
00:51:39Yes, I did push her around.
00:51:40I don't know what came over me.
00:51:42I just didn't want Mrs. Esmond to be stuck with the housework, I suppose.
00:51:44She ain't commendable.
00:51:45I'm sure she's grateful.
00:51:47It was a stupid thing to do.
00:51:48I...
00:51:49I wouldn't do a thing like that now.
00:51:51I'm glad to hear it.
00:51:52Well, what's the matter?
00:52:05Don't look at me as if I was a juvenile delinquent.
00:52:08I don't know what's going on.
00:52:38I don't know what's going on.
00:53:08Oh, it's you.
00:53:25Who did you think it was?
00:53:26For a moment, a burglar.
00:53:27What are you doing down here?
00:53:28I thought I had a noise.
00:53:30You might have swung this poker at me,
00:53:32or I at you.
00:53:34Somebody might have been killed.
00:53:36Good night, Frank.
00:53:37So you took care of Bailey.
00:53:40You persuaded him not to go to the police.
00:53:44Why didn't you tell me it was a hundred pounds you persuaded him with?
00:53:48I didn't think it mattered.
00:53:49But it does matter.
00:53:50You bribed him.
00:53:52Not exactly.
00:53:53We owed Sally something for a trousseau.
00:53:55You bribed him to bribe me.
00:53:57I'm your guinea pig,
00:53:58and you're trying to buy my friendship.
00:54:00I admit there are better tests of friendship.
00:54:02That's why I didn't tell you.
00:54:04Well, you can't buy me, Dr. Esmond.
00:54:08I'll pay you back with interest.
00:54:11If you feel that way, Frank.
00:54:13Turn out the lights when you go, hmm?
00:54:14Come on.
00:54:15Come on.
00:54:16Let's go.
00:54:46Let's go.
00:55:16I've come to check the telephone.
00:55:34Oh, what seems to be the trouble?
00:55:35Travel with the diary.
00:55:36Come on, get out of here.
00:55:41Come on.
00:55:42Come on.
00:55:42What's in there?
00:55:59Come on.
00:56:01All right.
00:56:11Now you open the safe.
00:56:13Come on, it's not your money.
00:56:14Don't die for it.
00:56:15Come on, Phyllis.
00:56:37Give it up, Clive.
00:56:45Please.
00:56:47It's not that easy.
00:56:49Not as hard as going on with it.
00:56:53It's no good.
00:56:55An experiment that went wrong.
00:56:59Call it quits and forget it.
00:57:01I can't.
00:57:06Heaven knows I could use a rest more time for myself, for Glenda.
00:57:10I don't give her much of a life.
00:57:11And it's not that I have to prove how good I am or that quitting would be a personal defeat.
00:57:16I can't quit.
00:57:18I can't let the boy down.
00:57:19I know there's something there worth saving.
00:57:21All right, Clive.
00:57:27He hates me, you know.
00:57:32I don't quite know why.
00:57:51What's the matter?
00:58:15It's a police car.
00:58:16Listen, I was with you all day.
00:58:18Frank.
00:58:19Where were you?
00:58:20At the butcher's.
00:58:21Before that.
00:58:22At the hairdresser's.
00:58:23I was with you.
00:58:24At the hairdresser's.
00:58:25That's ridiculous.
00:58:31It's a very interesting story, Inspector.
00:58:34Almost as interesting as your preoccupation with Frank.
00:58:37I have some comments.
00:58:39But you'd rather talk to Frank, wouldn't you?
00:58:41Yes.
00:58:51Hello, Inspector.
00:58:54It's nice to see you again.
00:58:57I can't keep away from you, lad.
00:59:00Usually I have no feelings on a case, but you're different.
00:59:02You've had a chance in a million, and you've spat on it.
00:59:05So it's going to be a pleasure to get you.
00:59:13Let me boil the inspector's story down, at least as far as he's told me.
00:59:16Do you mind, Simmons?
00:59:17Sure, Ed.
00:59:17A manager says he was confronted by a young man in his 20s.
00:59:21Perhaps he was wearing a raincoat.
00:59:23Perhaps not.
00:59:24Perhaps he was wearing glasses.
00:59:26And he might have been freckled.
00:59:27And perhaps the manager saw nothing at all because all he could keep his eyes on was a revolver staring him in the face.
00:59:32Dr. Esmond.
00:59:33Would you say I'm being unfair, or did you neglect to say that you were to warrant for his arrest?
00:59:37I haven't.
00:59:40I just wanted to ask him to step along and see the manager.
00:59:42Are you serious?
00:59:43Are you proposing an identification parade of one?
00:59:46How do you know we didn't take fingerprints?
00:59:47Because if you did, you'd have a warrant in your pocket right now.
00:59:52Oh, I was always certain you didn't have fingerprints.
00:59:56Oh, why?
00:59:57How could you?
00:59:58Frank was with me all afternoon.
01:00:01Not all afternoon, naturally.
01:00:02He did spend some time shopping with my wife.
01:00:05But while I made my rounds earlier in the day, he sat in the car and waited.
01:00:08And for periods not exceeding ten minutes.
01:00:11Hardly time enough to dash down to Oxford Street and do that job.
01:00:15Do you mean that?
01:00:17I do.
01:00:18Are you prepared to swear to that statement?
01:00:21Certainly.
01:00:23I ask you to withdraw it, Dr. Esmond.
01:00:26No.
01:00:28I think I understand what you're trying to do.
01:00:30But have you considered that a conviction for perjury would ruin you?
01:00:35For the last time, are you prepared to withdraw that statement?
01:00:39If you do, you need have no fear that it'll ever be mentioned.
01:00:44No.
01:00:52Do you mind if I search the premises?
01:00:54Without a search warrant?
01:00:55Let's not start all over again, Inspector.
01:01:02I'm going to pull no punches, Doctor.
01:01:05I promise you.
01:01:05Phew.
01:01:21Phew.
01:01:22I need a drink.
01:01:23How about you, Frank?
01:01:26No, thanks.
01:01:31Where's the gun?
01:01:34In your desk.
01:01:36In the money?
01:01:40I've got some. The rest in there.
01:01:42You get out and bring it along to the office and dump.
01:01:44That's a waste of time.
01:01:49I want you to be clear about this, Carol.
01:01:51When I left for the clinic today, Frank was with me.
01:01:53I didn't know.
01:01:54Well, you know now.
01:01:55He was with me all afternoon.
01:01:56I dropped him on the way home so he could buy some cigarettes.
01:02:05Don't let me down.
01:02:18Here it is.
01:02:21Is this all of it?
01:02:23No.
01:02:23We'll put it in a plain package and send it back.
01:02:31Will you do that for me?
01:02:32You wish me to?
01:02:33Yes, please.
01:02:40Go on, drink it up.
01:02:41We deserve it.
01:02:42We've been in a tight spot.
01:02:43Robbery in broad daylight.
01:02:53That was a tight spot, too.
01:02:55Yes.
01:02:57It's a wonder you didn't kill that manager.
01:02:59If he'd made a move, you'd have done it, wouldn't you?
01:03:02Yes.
01:03:02I wanted to kill him.
01:03:04I almost did.
01:03:06Did he remind you of your father?
01:03:09My father?
01:03:10No, he didn't.
01:03:12He didn't look anything like him.
01:03:13You know, I was once in a tight spot like this with him.
01:03:21You were?
01:03:23It was my money.
01:03:25I'd saved up to buy a bicycle.
01:03:27And he was keeping it for me.
01:03:28When I asked him for it, he wouldn't give it to me.
01:03:30But it was my money.
01:03:32So I went out and stole one.
01:03:40Then the police came.
01:03:41I was so scared, I ran to him.
01:03:43I begged him to hide me.
01:03:44You know, anything like a kid.
01:03:45And he wouldn't.
01:03:45He turned me over to him.
01:03:49He made a great speech about what a good citizen he was.
01:03:51I suppose they thought he was really quite a man.
01:03:55Justice, he said, must be done.
01:03:58I was going to kill him.
01:04:00The day I came out of jail, I was going to kill him.
01:04:01I jumped him, but if you...
01:04:03What happened, Frank?
01:04:07He was too strong.
01:04:10Too strong.
01:04:13He just twisted my arm behind my back
01:04:16and made me kneel down.
01:04:19Kneel down in front of her.
01:04:24And then he beat me.
01:04:27I always remember the pattern on that carpet.
01:04:30Blue and yellow.
01:04:31No wonder you hated them.
01:04:37Mostly him.
01:04:40How I hated him.
01:04:46And a week later,
01:04:47he was dead.
01:04:51And you were left with your stepmother.
01:04:54The day they buried him.
01:04:57That night.
01:04:59She got drunk.
01:05:01She started screaming at me.
01:05:04You killed him!
01:05:04You killed him!
01:05:05You killed him!
01:05:05You killed him!
01:05:06Did you?
01:05:10I prayed for it.
01:05:12I wanted him to die.
01:05:13I killed him!
01:05:14I killed him!
01:05:17What did the doctor write on the death certificate?
01:05:21Heart!
01:05:21You hated him.
01:05:23You wished him dead.
01:05:25Yes!
01:05:25You got your wish.
01:05:26Yes!
01:05:27He died.
01:05:28You were guilty of murder.
01:05:29Yes!
01:05:30And you deserved to be punished.
01:05:32I know!
01:05:32You didn't kill your father, but when he died, you had to provide your own punishment, which
01:05:40you've been trying to do.
01:05:43All you wanted was to love him, which he made impossible, turning it into fear.
01:05:47Hate, guilt, and fear, and the guilt and fear, making more hatred.
01:05:59Don't you see, Frank, all your life you've been following that pattern, living that pattern.
01:06:03Your youth, your strength, your hopes.
01:06:06All wasted in a lie.
01:06:10You didn't kill your father.
01:06:12Wasted.
01:06:13Wasted.
01:06:14Wasted.
01:06:15I don't know anymore.
01:06:21I don't know anymore.
01:06:24Clyde?
01:06:28Clyde?
01:06:32Clyde?
01:06:35Go ahead, now.
01:06:45I won't wait.
01:06:57Clyde.
01:07:11Hello?
01:07:12It's a problem about dinner, darling.
01:07:14It's six o'clock now.
01:07:14I've got to be at the university at eight.
01:07:16I don't think it's time to come home.
01:07:17Oh, I see.
01:07:19Well, then, how many am I to expect for dinner?
01:07:22Well, Frank wants to go with me again.
01:07:24Why don't you join us, and we'll eat together later.
01:07:30No, you two run along.
01:07:32I've already fixed something.
01:07:35I'll be quite happy.
01:07:36All right.
01:07:38Bye.
01:07:38Bye.
01:08:02Bye.
01:08:03Bye.
01:08:04Bye.
01:08:04Bye.
01:08:05Bye.
01:08:05Bye.
01:08:06Now you'll receive your name.
01:08:12Yes, no.
01:08:13We'll receive your mail.
01:08:16Hello.
01:08:19Took everything but my keys.
01:08:22How are you, darling?
01:08:24Surprised.
01:08:25I completely forgot I had an article to do for the journal.
01:08:29Have you a bite to eat in the house?
01:08:31Short notice to fiend.
01:08:33I'm sorry.
01:08:34I'm sorry.
01:08:35I'm sorry.
01:08:36I'm sorry.
01:08:37I'm sorry.
01:08:38I'm sorry.
01:08:39I'm sorry.
01:08:40I'm sorry.
01:08:41I'm sorry.
01:08:42I'm sorry.
01:08:43I'm sorry.
01:08:44Short notice to fiend two hungry men.
01:08:47Oh, Frank's not with me.
01:08:48He's got the fishing bug.
01:08:49He's decided to stay a few more days.
01:08:59Is there anything the matter?
01:09:01No.
01:09:02Why should there be?
01:09:03You haven't said three words in an hour.
01:09:06I'm just tired, that's all.
01:09:08I thought with your steady border out of the way.
01:09:11There's still enough work to do around the house.
01:09:14You don't seem to have tried very hard to replace Sally.
01:09:18Oh, it's harder to find someone than do your own work.
01:09:22Obviously, you're up to neither.
01:09:24Glenda, I was going to suggest...
01:09:26Don't prescribe for me, Clive.
01:09:28I lost my temper, Clive.
01:09:42But you nag.
01:09:47I'm sorry, darling.
01:09:49I've been under a strain, if that's any excuse.
01:09:53You under a strain?
01:09:55It's hard to imagine you with nerves.
01:09:57I don't want to dramatize it, but a case like Frank's isn't easy.
01:10:00Wasn't easy.
01:10:04The things you can't do, Glenda.
01:10:06You can't show fear, dislike, weakness of any kind, even...
01:10:10Jealousy.
01:10:12Jealousy?
01:10:13But you're the one who's paid for it.
01:10:15I've neglected you shamefully, and I know it.
01:10:18I couldn't blame you if you just chucked it all and left.
01:10:22But I want to make it up to you, darling.
01:10:25Why don't we go away for a month?
01:10:29Maybe two.
01:10:30Not you alone or me, but...
01:10:32Together.
01:10:33It's been a long time.
01:10:35Well, you...
01:10:36You planned a lecture tour?
01:10:38I'll cancel it.
01:10:40What are we going to do with Frank?
01:10:43He's pretty much on his own now.
01:10:46He'll manage.
01:10:48You're the best judge, of course.
01:10:50What are we going to do with Frank?
01:10:51Of course.
01:11:20He's pretty much on his own.
01:11:21They can write in stuff.
01:11:22They can write in.
01:11:23You and my friends.
01:11:24Come on!
01:11:25Mr. Clannis?
01:11:26Three rooms, ma'am.
01:11:29He's on his way.
01:11:30Mr. Clannis?
01:11:313, ma'am.
01:11:32Mr. Clannis?
01:11:333, ma'am.
01:11:353, ma'am.
01:11:383, ma'am.
01:11:393, ma'am.
01:11:404, ma'am.
01:11:414, ma'am.
01:11:424, ma'am.
01:11:47Let's go.
01:12:09Now tell me, what's wrong?
01:12:12Nothing.
01:12:14Then why have you avoided me?
01:12:17I told you.
01:12:19I can't stand around that house any longer.
01:12:22He wants to take me away on a holiday for months.
01:12:25Don't worry.
01:12:26I won't go.
01:12:28I wouldn't go anywhere without you.
01:12:33Darling.
01:12:35You asked me to go away with you.
01:12:36I was afraid before, but I'm not now.
01:12:39It would be wonderful, wouldn't it?
01:12:41We're just alike.
01:12:42We know each other.
01:12:43We're fighting the same things.
01:12:45Maybe that's why it had to happen between us, Frank.
01:12:49And now I feel we can make it work.
01:12:54You'd leave Clive?
01:12:56Yes.
01:12:58I don't love him.
01:12:59I don't know if I ever did.
01:13:15What about those creature comforts?
01:13:17Creature comforts.
01:13:18I've had them.
01:13:21I want the things I've never had.
01:13:25You'll be miserable in six months.
01:13:28Try me.
01:13:30When?
01:13:31Soon.
01:13:34Very soon.
01:13:36Now pack your things and I'll drive you back.
01:13:38I don't think I'd bet her.
01:13:40I could drop you just outside town.
01:13:43I'll get the train.
01:13:45When?
01:13:48Sometime tomorrow.
01:13:51No.
01:13:54This afternoon.
01:13:56Call Clive and tell me you've changed your mind.
01:13:58I'll have dinner for you.
01:14:02All right.
01:14:05Don't miss the train.
01:14:16Don't keep me waiting, Frank.
01:14:26You've never seen me really angry.
01:14:29I warn you.
01:14:30You don't know what I'm capable of.
01:15:00You're now letting me be.
01:15:05Was it raining in the country, Frank?
01:15:07Yes.
01:15:08It was a little this morning.
01:15:11All right. I get it.
01:15:12Was it raining in the country, Frank?
01:15:16Yes, it was a little this morning.
01:15:20All right, I'll get it.
01:15:22I'm expecting a call.
01:15:28Hello?
01:15:30Yes?
01:15:34Yes, all right.
01:15:36I'll be there.
01:15:42A friend of mine.
01:15:50Oh, don't worry. History isn't repeating itself again.
01:15:53Six months ago. It seems such a short time.
01:15:57Six months.
01:15:59There were times I thought it would never end.
01:16:02But it has ended, hasn't it?
01:16:03Yes, you're free now, Frank.
01:16:05Yes, I'm free.
01:16:06Still, I want you to know that you can stay here as long as you like.
01:16:09That you're more than welcome.
01:16:11I want you to feel very sure of yourself before you try to buck the world again.
01:16:15Yes, thank you.
01:16:17Glenda and I are planning a long holiday.
01:16:20We've planned them before, but somehow, you know the same old story.
01:16:23This time, I really want to follow through.
01:16:26Only...
01:16:28Frankly, we're worried about you.
01:16:30Well, you don't have to worry about me, you know, because...
01:16:33I'm going away, too. Tonight.
01:16:36Tonight?
01:16:38Why tonight?
01:16:40I have to meet Inspector Simmons at the police station.
01:16:44That was him on the phone just now.
01:16:46Simmons?
01:16:48But why?
01:16:50I knew it had to be faced someday, but...
01:16:52It could have been handled.
01:16:54You know, this was something I wanted to talk to you about, but...
01:16:58Well, I felt it was a decision I had to make for myself.
01:17:01You said just now that I was free.
01:17:04But I won't be free till I've... paid off.
01:17:08Till I'm all square, then I'll be free.
01:17:10That's why I phoned Simmons this afternoon.
01:17:13I see.
01:17:15I wish I did.
01:17:17I think we'd better have coffee and talk this over.
01:17:20No, thank you, Glenda.
01:17:22I...
01:17:23I still have some packing to do.
01:17:29Glenda, would you and Carol spare me from the washing up?
01:17:31I want to talk to Frank.
01:17:33Certainly.
01:17:34Frank.
01:17:45I've...
01:17:46I've got an awful lot to be grateful to you for.
01:17:51And...
01:17:52A lot to regret.
01:17:53A regret?
01:17:54Yes, I...
01:18:01Inspector Simmons sent a message to you.
01:18:03He said he didn't remember your last conversation.
01:18:06Ah.
01:18:13Goodbye.
01:18:14Not yet.
01:18:15I'll drive you over when you're ready.
01:18:29Well?
01:18:33You heard.
01:18:35But I didn't get it.
01:18:37It's what it sounded like.
01:18:40I thought we were leaving together.
01:18:42You'll know where I'm going.
01:18:43You must be out of your mind.
01:18:48But anyway...
01:18:49Clive will be there tomorrow, pleading for you.
01:18:53They'll let you off easy.
01:18:57Then what?
01:19:01Then I'm never going to see you again.
01:19:05Why?
01:19:06Clive?
01:19:07Because I can't go on hurting Clive any longer.
01:19:10Clive?
01:19:14What about me?
01:19:16Be human.
01:19:17Be decent.
01:19:19I've been sick all my life and he's cured me.
01:19:21I couldn't go on living like that any longer.
01:19:23You haven't answered my question.
01:19:24What about me?
01:19:27It's a little late in the day for conscience.
01:19:30Or does conscience always come late?
01:19:33After you've had your fun.
01:19:35Don't let's quarrel, Glenda.
01:19:38You're not going to give me notice like a waitress.
01:19:42One of your servant friends, one of your pickups at the Metro.
01:19:45Don't let's end it like this.
01:19:46Then it mustn't end.
01:19:54It has ended.
01:19:56Frank.
01:19:59Frank, please.
01:20:13Now tell me you're leaving.
01:20:16I'm leaving.
01:20:23I'm leaving.

01:21:45Yeah, it was Frank.
01:21:49Frank?
01:21:50Yes.
01:21:51Frank.
01:21:52Frank.
01:21:55Your pupil.
01:21:57Your guinea pig.
01:21:59Your reformed character paying off.
01:22:03Frank.
01:22:04What are you gonna do?
01:22:07Give him a medal?
01:22:12Clive.
01:22:13Don't.
01:22:14Please.
01:22:19Clive.
01:22:20Don't.

01:23:38Yes.
01:23:42No!
01:23:48He was leaving.
01:23:51He was leaving me, Clive.
01:23:53Me.
01:23:58Not you.
01:23:59Me.
01:24:01The man who knew everything.
01:24:03The man who could work miracles but couldn't keep his wife.
01:24:07And then he changed.
01:24:10He walked out on you.
01:24:18He's dead!
01:24:21He isn't dead, Linda.
01:24:23He's gone.
01:24:24He isn't there.
01:24:37He's gone.
01:24:38I'm not blaming you for anything, Glenda.
01:24:51All the mistakes were mine.
01:24:53Glenda, wait a minute.
01:24:54Where are you going?
01:24:55Yes.
01:24:56No.
01:24:57Let her go.

01:26:09Then, I ran from the house.
01:26:12He was raving.
01:26:14Insane.
01:26:15Look, I can't believe it.
01:26:17I've got to get back to him.
01:26:19Oh, you can't.
01:26:20He has your gun.
01:26:22He says he'll kill you if he finds you.
01:26:24Well, I've got to get back to him.
01:26:26Oh, you don't understand him.
01:26:27He's crazy.
01:26:29He says he's going to kill you.
01:26:31Listen, turn around.
