00:00The Garden Rescue Team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true.
00:07Charlie Dimmock, Lee Burkill, Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies. It feels disorganized, a bit chaotic. It's a bit of a shocker. Each week two of our
00:33designers will go head-to-head. Pick me and let them do this. The garden we're going to go with
00:38is... Drumroll!
00:46And whichever designer loses... The race is on. Go! ...helps the winner build the garden. Good idea.
00:52Did you get that on camera? Lee said, good idea, Charlie. Amazing. Turning garden dreams... Open your eyes.
00:59I'm so overwhelmed. Into reality. That is amazing.
01:13Today, the team is in Stockport with Mike and house-proud Christine... Wait, I've just got to give it a clean for this, Mike.
01:21All right. Who likes to keep busy?
01:27I really enjoy dressmaking. It's something I've been doing since I was six. I made this dress,
01:33especially for the show. It's got an art deco print on it. I really like the art deco style because I
01:39think it invokes this era where there was such creativity. It evokes that great Gatsby look,
01:46doesn't it? It does, yeah. We went to San Diego and it's just full of this absolutely amazing 1930s
01:54architecture. Oh, we just took so many pictures and such an inspiration. Christine and Mike have
02:01worked hard to apply their travel inspiration into the interior. We've been here for, what, 11 years?
02:0811 years. 11 years, yeah. 11 years. And, yeah, we put our heart and soul into renovating the house.
02:16But the interior is where Christine and Mike's eye for design ends.
02:20So, this is our garden. It's green, a bit too green in some places. Especially with the weeds. The weeds
02:30are superb. So, walking through here, we've got our patio, which is a fairly useless area at the
02:37moment. Yeah, we can't do anything with this patio and we've tried to plant a few things. Unfortunately,
02:44my friend butchered a lavender. She did apologise.
02:50We've got another level here. So, we've got the grass, which is quite spongy, which is green and
02:57bland. We've got this border here, which is all very heavy clay. Yeah, heavy clay. All that survives
03:03in there is a bit of heather. And weeds. And weeds. Don't forget them. Definitely weeds, yeah.
03:09Then we step up to the back of the lawn where we've got this fur. Well, I'm not sure what it is,
03:14actually. We're not sure what it is, but this is just going out of control, really. And it's also
03:20hiding the Acer at the back. Again, we don't really know what to do with that Acer. No. We want it more in
03:27the foreground, if it can be possible. Yeah, we just need to hide that. Quite overlooked here. It is very
03:34overlooked. Very overlooked. It is, isn't it? Yeah. And then over here, we've got our magnificent yucca,
03:42which we inherited when we came into the house. There was only one plan. It's now multiplied
03:48into three. I think it's like us. We've flowered, haven't we? And indeed, a bit of 10 TLC. Speak for
03:54yourself. It just is a no-go area for us, isn't it? Yeah. And it just leads us down to the bins.
04:01We had vision for the house, but never could quite realise what that vision was for the garden.
04:07We didn't really know what else to do, did we? No, no. We're not horticulturists at all.
04:14And we just need some knowing minds to put its best to it. It's a lovely day. It's a shame the garden
04:25doesn't match it. Yeah.
04:35So it is quite pretty, isn't it? Yeah, it is lovely. Nice bedding plants.
04:42Charlie and Amelia will be putting their design skills to work for Mike and Christine's garden.
04:47All right. Right, Amelia. Okay, let's have a look. So, Mike and Christine. Okay, lovely.
04:56Smiley, smiley, aren't they? Very smiley, yeah. I don't quite know why. You wait until you see the garden.
05:01Wow, okay. Bit of an interesting shape, isn't it? Very triangular. Yeah. And there is paving.
05:07Okay, that's sort of good news, isn't it? It's a bit higgledy-piggledy, kind of, doesn't look that
05:13even to stand on, does it? No. Now, when you see it from here, you can really see the level changes,
05:19can't you? Yeah, that's going to be quite challenging. I mean, I think also, actually,
05:23could be an interesting thing to use in the design, actually working with the levels.
05:27Shall we find out what they want, then? Let's have a look. Okay.
05:30How do you do that? You know me and technology. What we really want is a garden that's inspired,
05:36inspired by this art deco period, this great Gatsby glamour. 1920s garden. It's one I've never
05:43heard of. I know. That's a really cool reef. And we want it to also incorporate our Californian adventure.
05:50That's really important to us. Okay, so sandy, beachy. Could go either way.
05:56Yeah. Palmy, jungle planting, or some of those Hollywood gardens. Yeah.
06:01They're sort of quite classical. Yeah, very much so. And we want somewhere that we could
06:07entertain people and relax at the top. There's not much to look at beyond the boundaries.
06:14No. The fences. Yeah, the fences. It needs to be accessible for me, my retirement, and easy
06:21maintenance, really. It's a big wish list, isn't it? It is. For a small space. It is quite a lot.
06:27We are absolutely desperate for your skills, your design skills, your gardening skills. We really need
06:32your help. Do you know what the budget is? The budget is £5,500. Okay, not bad, not bad.
06:39The challenge is the shape. And I'm not quite sure about the great Gatsby Art Deco gum full-on.
06:49I've got a few ideas creeping in, but... I don't want to whisper them in my ear.
06:54They're not too firmed up yet, so... Charlie and Amelia must create a design that fits Mike and Christine's
07:04£5,500 budget. The couple must pick the one they prefer, which the losing designer will help build.
07:12The designers and top team of landscapers provide the labour for free, leaving the entire budget to
07:18spend on materials and plants. Back in Stockport... I can't wait for this.
07:24...the designers' pitches have arrived. Are you ready? Yeah, I am, yeah. Let's go.
07:29As you know, Christine and Mike, it's a slightly interesting shape, this garden, with this
07:34triangular format. So what I've done to kind of draw your attention away from that pinch point here
07:40is break into the space with lots of strong, leading, rectilinear lines. So the actual layout
07:47of the garden is very reminiscent of patterns and shapes found in Art Deco design.
07:52Oh, wow. Look at that. That is so different. Here we go, Christine, Mike, you wanted full-on impact.
08:00I wanted the glamour of a sweeping lawn that leads up to a beautiful pergola with a swing seat. So you
08:08can sit up there in the dappled shade. That's going to be really masking the top of the garden, isn't it?
08:14Oh, yeah. That's really important. And to get that sort of glamorous Hollywood look,
08:20there's going to be these beautiful pedestal planters dotted through the borders to give this
08:26height and also impact with this colourful bedding. Fantastic. What I proposed is to actually cut into
08:33the existing paving and create different planting beds. And that will allow you to have a lovely
08:40nestled seating area here to catch some of the sun at the end of the day. Oh, that's great, that.
08:45Oh, the seating area. And it's got that little seating area in the evening as well. Oh, evening sun.
08:49As you know, you've got these slightly uncomfortable, awkward level changes. So what I propose to do is
08:55actually level that out and create a flush gravel area with lots of Californian-style planting.
09:02Oh, those plants look amazing. When you come out of the conservatory, we've got this decking that runs
09:08straight to the lawn, no steps. And then I've got some art deco detail on it. It looks really art deco.
09:15It is very art deco, that. You'll come out of the patio doors and straight onto the lawn,
09:20but the deck is big enough to have table and chairs on it so you can socialise. Oh, Charlie, beautiful.
09:27So you've got this lovely pergola section here where you can have barbecues, drinks in the summer,
09:33have friends round and really use it as a lovely entertaining space. Nice.
09:38We've just never had anywhere for friends to entertain. Well, not that we're proud of anyway.
09:44As you move away from the pergola down this gravel pathway, you'll then get to this really lovely
09:51enclosed and private seating area where you can have your swing seat, all underneath the canopy of a
09:57verdant trachycarpus palm. I'm a sucker for a palm. You certainly are. Along the boundaries at the
10:03moment, it's a little bit worse for wear. So what I've proposed to really make the colours in this
10:09garden pop is to actually paint it a darker anthracite colour and allow the planting to melt and create a
10:16sense of depth to the garden. Super. Look at the plants. Charlie and Amelia's designs have different
10:24shapes, layouts and planting schemes. But the ability for Christian and Mike to relax and socialise in an
10:31art deco inspired garden is key to both. So I have splurged the budget by going for big impactful plants,
10:41but also I want to add some detail in there. So through this planting here, we're going to have
10:46these bespoke made screens that almost look like leaves, but very stylised in an art deco fashion.
10:55Oh, screens. So it'll just add a bit of interest with some climbers going up through those as well.
11:03So I want to sort of get some jasmines in there for scent. So as well as the impact of colour,
11:08you're going to have the gorgeous scent as well. So much colour as well. There is.
11:13So that's my design, Christine Mike. I hope you love it. It's got the glamour of the sweeping lawns
11:19and a lovely destination seating area and plants that are luscious and glorious.
11:25That art deco vibe is looking great. It really is, yeah. I really hope you love this design. I'd
11:32love to build it for you. I think it's an amazing brief. I think it's going to be really special,
11:37really verdant and very evocative of those art deco and California themes that you love.
11:42It's going to be a really difficult choice, that, isn't it? Yeah, it's going to be difficult.
11:52All right, you ready? Are you ready? Yeah, I'm ready. Yeah, let's go and have a look.
11:56Watch your step. Ooh, well, here we are for the designs. Yeah.
12:02Yeah. So, shall we start with Charlie's? Start with Charlie's. I love that decking area.
12:07Yeah, I think that's lovely, that decking area. I know.
12:10And that seat up there. Coming out of the conservatory onto the deck and the art deco look as well.
12:17Yeah? So, shall we have a look at Amelia's? Yeah, OK.
12:20OK. Oh, I absolutely think this is stunning, this layout, isn't it? Having this seat here
12:25where we can capture the sun in the evening. Yeah, it's lovely. Never had that. Yeah, yeah.
12:29And just cutting into the patio is great. Yeah. And the use of the screen where it just screens
12:37the bins off. It's going to be difficult. It is going to be very difficult. Yeah, it is.
12:41Amelia, Christine and Molly have come back to us with their choice. Shall we have a look?
12:49Go on, then. OK. It's that button. Hi, Charlie. Hi, Amelia. Hello.
12:53Thank you very much for your designs. They're really well put together. They always say that.
12:59Charlie, I love the patio. We also love your cypress trees.
13:04The colour, the planting. Absolutely. Ooh, lovely.
13:08And Amelia, just your take on the garden was just so different. Ooh, look at you.
13:16We loved that the entertaining area was central. And that palm tree was absolutely superb.
13:23Big palm trees. Always a winner. Yeah.
13:25It was a really difficult decision now between the two. It was. Ooh.
13:29We can only choose one, and that one is...
13:34Amelia. Amelia. Oh, wow.
13:37Well done. Thank you very much. Well done.
13:39Thank you. Amelia, just the inspiration that you took from 1930s and Californian,
13:44and you really fused them together. So, yeah, thank you. Really excited.
13:49Really excited now. Yeah.
13:50Ooh, well done. Brilliant. Thank you, Charlie.
13:54They'll think they're in Hollywood. Hopefully we'll have Californian weather.
13:58Yeah, hopefully not central rain.
14:09Project manager Dan and an expert team of landscapers have just two days to bring Amelia's design to life.
14:16Morning, all. Morning. Morning.
14:19Right. This is the area where it's all going to come out. So, quite a bit to do.
14:25Get rid of the grass. We're going to have a nice pergola here.
14:28OK. Underneath the pergola, we're going to have this little paved area.
14:32Nice.
14:32Swing seat at the back and decorative stone all around the edge.
14:36A lot of levels in this garden, so we're definitely going to try and reduce them.
14:39Good to go? Yeah, ready. Right, let's go.
14:43First, the whole team is getting stuck in, clearing weeds at the front patio area.
14:49I haven't told these to, but this is actually the correct way to weed the garden.
14:53Get a shower out and take it nice and slow.
14:58I prefer the old blunt screwdriver technique.
15:01Gives me good results.
15:03There's 25 square metres of weed-filled patio to get through.
15:09It could be quick if you've got the goat in here, to be honest, wouldn't it?
15:14It's looking a lot better now.
15:17Susie's moved on to clear the back of the garden, ready for Amelia's design to take shape.
15:22This is a U. It's just going to get bigger and bigger and bigger and take up this whole space,
15:28which will be a shame because their garden's not big. So, we're going to,
15:32I'm sadly, have to get rid of it. And also, because Mike's retiring,
15:36the last thing you want to be doing in your old age is having to wield a heavy hedge cutter around and
15:42trimming large shrubs.
15:45The uncontrollable shrubs will be replaced and the uncontrollable Acer will be rehomed out the front.
15:52Thunderbirds are go.
15:53Yeah, are you all right? It's a beautiful Acer. It's got a lovely form to it and it would be a shame to lose it.
16:01Having dug out the extent of the roots, Danny and Susie ensure as much of the Acer's root ball is intact
16:07and then wrap it in membrane, ready to transport.
16:12Someone's going to have to tell me where I'm going because I cannot see a thing.
16:15Amelia's agreed a new home with Mike and Christine in the front garden and Susie makes
16:21sure the roots can fully spread before firming up around it.
16:24Lovely, like it's always been there.
16:34Amelia's design calls for more manageable planting and a new shape to Mike and Christine's garden.
16:42The main part of this garden is about the straight lines and ensuring that we get everything in proportion.
16:50So we've got the sleepers just here now, kind of as a guide to where the new area will be.
16:57Dan is finalising rectangular markings that reduce the size of the existing patio and divide the front and
17:04the back of the space.
17:06As you can see, this was the existing line where Carl's has taken up the last few bricks now.
17:10But as you can see, what we've done now with the new sleepers, this extends the gravel area and the
17:17actual garden now is in parallel. This line now is in parallel with the conservatory and the garden
17:22actually just reads better overall.
17:24Once the garden is cleared, Susie and Danny can more accurately measure up for the new paving.
17:32That flat line is a good thing and it means that the top of this peg is in level with my sleeper,
17:38which is the finished height of my paving. So then I can go down from that, put the scalpings in,
17:44membrane, block paving and we're good to go.
17:54Amelia's small rectangular pavers will create a connection to the larger garden shapes.
18:00We're going to lay these pavers, we're going to put slurry on the back, so that's effectively a
18:06cement glue and then they're going to get laid onto a one in five cement and sand mix.
18:13And then we'll remove the frame, paunch it up and point it. Dead easy.
18:20And the newly renovated existing patio, which is being reduced in size, will complement it nicely.
18:26Right, so we're just finishing touches with the existing patio, we've jet washed it now.
18:33Now just to put the grout in, bring it all together nicely. So as to show,
18:39you know, a little bit of TLC, you can bring the old patio back to life.
18:44After just one day of hard graft, Christine and Mike's garden really is taking on a new shape.
18:49That looks alright, doesn't it?
18:51Ready for Charlie and Amelia to add their expertise in the morning.
18:56Here we are. Wow, it's almost sunny Stockport. Gorgeous garden, isn't it?
19:05Pretty little roses and jasmine and great for the wildlife. Yeah, absolutely.
19:12Oh wow, that's looking pretty good already. This has changed a bit, hasn't it?
19:17Still looks triangular-ish. It does at the moment, Charlie, but I am very confident that the planting
19:23is really going to address that. Oh yeah, so we've got a lot to do still though.
19:27Yeah, I think I could really use your help on this seating area with the lovely oak pergola we've
19:32got going in. Oh, oak pergola. And what are you going to be doing?
19:36I will be focusing on this main vista up here, which is going to have a lovely swing seat,
19:41lots of green planting. So you're going to be right at the point then?
19:44I will be right on point. Right on point. How is your ballet?
19:46Ballet. Not too bad, yeah. Quite well known for my plie. Oh, okay.
19:51Yeah. Well, you've got a lot to do, so. We do. Let's crack on. Okay.
19:55The landscapers are already busy. Kylie, baby.
19:59Finishing paving and preparing ground for the pergola.
20:02What I wanted to do is really just take inspiration from those sort of strong leading lines,
20:07patterns, tessellations that you find in Art Deco and apply that to this unusual triangular space.
20:14So the way I've sort of gone about it is actually dividing the garden up into thirds.
20:20This area here is really the biggest third of the garden. So what we wanted to do is really create
20:27a lovely, welcoming seating area and then have another seating area further down here,
20:34but really get rid of that vast swathe of paving, which Christine and Mike had before.
20:39Amelia's design creates a relaxing area for Christine and Mike at the top end of the garden,
20:46with the swing seat snugly fitting in the spot.
20:49It's 185, so it is just about.
20:52So it's just over, isn't it? So we could, I think then, actually have it here.
20:58Yeah.
20:58Rather than this gravel section here, because although it is wide enough just,
21:05I think it's going to feel a little bit more purposeful in this section, particularly if we
21:10can get that lovely planting around the edges. So if you're happy with it going here.
21:16Yes, definitely. Yep, no problem. Brilliant.
21:18OK, lovely.
21:20A mix of tropical and closer to home planting will envelop Christine and Mike throughout the garden.
21:27Oh, look at that colour.
21:29A riot of colour.
21:30Isn't that gorgeous?
21:31I'm loving the hot colours.
21:33Very hot colours. Look at those gorgeous rude beckia there.
21:36Oh, and the crocosmias and some jungly plants.
21:41I'm feeling very excited now I'm seeing all the plants.
21:43I think Christine's going to love them.
21:45Shall we get them out then?
21:46OK, woohoo.
21:48Here we go.
21:50Happiness in a crate.
21:51I can't help but smile when you see those gorgeous colours.
21:58Wow, look at this tracking carpus, Charlie.
22:00It's lovely, look at the shadows already.
22:02It's gorgeous.
22:03Look, woo.
22:04And I've not got just one, I've got three going in the garden.
22:08Three?
22:08Yep, power of three.
22:10Are you putting them all as the focal point?
22:12Yeah, I think so, because actually it would be nice to sort of bulk it out so that really becomes a lovely central viewpoint in the garden.
22:21Wow.
22:22They're fabulous.
22:23They are good, aren't they?
22:24They're good.
22:25They're good.
22:26They're good.
22:27They're good.
22:27They're good.
22:28They're good.
22:29They're good.
22:30They're good.
22:31They're good.
22:32Already you can see, and particularly once these have grown in a little bit, that you really
22:36do lose that harsh point at the end of the garden.
22:39And what felt like a really strong apex before sort of just melts away.
22:45Right, let's get her in the ground.
22:46Great stuff.
22:50In front of the swing seat will be a second seating area.
22:54That's good.
22:55That's bang on.
22:56Set within a pergola that Charlie and Kyle have been planting posts for.
23:01I'm loving the design that Amelia's done.
23:04It's quite a modern pergola.
23:06So we've got these uprights with a timber going across, but then Amelia's put these lovely stainless steel wires in.
23:14So it gives quite a modern vibe to a pergola rather than traditional rafters.
23:20Now, one thing to remember when you're putting in perglas, if you're within two metres of your boundary, your fence line,
23:28you can't go over two and a half metres high unless you go and get planning permission.
23:33But we're way within that, aren't we?
23:37I'm not tall enough for this job.
23:38You're better off out of the way, really, aren't you, Charlie?
23:41Oh, we're OK.
23:42They've just given me this to keep me out of the way.
23:45Are you happy?
23:46Yeah, I'm happy.
23:48To create a contrast between planting structures, the team have been busy adding new colour to Mike and Christine's boundary fencing.
23:55And it's great because you can already see how much the green is popping against that dark colour.
24:02And I also think when you've got sort of slightly awkward shapes around the boundaries,
24:07this kind of colour just makes them fade away completely.
24:10And what you focus on is actually the planting rather than the fencing.
24:17You're happy. You're happy as Larry.
24:19Why was Larry always happy?
24:21I don't know.
24:26We are pretty much done.
24:33Amelia's using a mix of materials throughout the garden.
24:36How many people does it take to build a pergola? Three!
24:42Charlie, Kyle and Dan are creating a wire roof for the pergola to encourage climbers.
24:47Now, picking up on Amelia's theme of threes, we've done the same thing with the pergola.
24:55So, there's nine cross rafters. So, that's three lots of three.
25:00So, it's picking up that whole theme over and over again.
25:05Can I have a quick technical question? Do we want the hole up or down?
25:10Probably like that.
25:10Like that, yep.
25:11Give it a bit of structural support then, won't it?
25:14Yeah, yes. Yes, Kyle.
25:23There we go, last eyelet going in.
25:25Sorties.
25:26Sorties.
25:27Now, we've got the really fiddly bit. Attaching the wires.
25:31Is that a new?
25:33Susie and Amelia...
25:34Flat pack furniture. Who doesn't love it?
25:37...are working together to build an off-the-shelf swing seat.
25:40So, you can actually make your own swing seats, but there are a couple of things to think about
25:45when you are making them yourself. Obviously, it needs to be able to hold the weight of a couple
25:48of people sitting on it. So, in this instance, we have gone for something that we know will work.
25:54This was about 180 quid, but, I mean, sky's the limit, to be honest. It can go all the way up to
26:00thousands. So, you know, do a bit of research, see what you like, see what style you like as well,
26:06because this is a little bit more of an old school, coming into that art deco theme. But
26:11you can get really nice modern ones made out of metal. So, lots of different options out there.
26:15A four, a three... Oh, a five.
26:20To create a relaxing view from the swing seat,
26:23Amelia's asked Danny to hide where the bins are kept to the side of the house.
26:28We're going to make a little bespoke trellis panel with some baton to go across. So,
26:33a little bit of light through, but it will hide the bins. That's what we're trying to achieve.
26:37But, we've got solid concrete everywhere here. I cut through the top bit,
26:41and I thought, I've cracked it. But, unfortunately, I've gone straight through the top bit
26:44into another layer of concrete. So, the solution to getting a post in here,
26:49I can bolt this plate down into the hole. That'll all be hidden with some extra concrete.
26:55And then, with the post going there, it'll be nice and firm. Then, I can make the trellis panel.
26:59The team are determined to create unspoiled, clean lines in the Art Deco-inspired garden.
27:08All right, what can go wrong? And Charlie and the team are ready to attach the pergola's wire roof.
27:14All right. Oh, wow. Knowing the truth. Here we go.
27:20Twist it. Twist it, yeah. Get it round.
27:23I have to say, Charlie, you've done a pretty good job on this.
27:26Well, I don't either. Kyle and Dan kept me under control. They only let me do the simple thing.
27:32It was the patio and pergola that convinced Mike and Christine that Amelia's design was their favourite.
27:40I'm looking forward to the whole aspect of how the planting mixes in with the pergola.
27:46I am really looking forward to seeing the clay pavers, because Amelia referred to them as the Art Deco, the repetition of design.
27:56That's what really sold it to me. So, I am really looking forward to seeing those in the garden, because I can't imagine them at the moment.
28:05Here we go. All the wires are in. We've tensed them up, but not over-tensing them, because otherwise it'll pull the timbers in.
28:13But there's still a little bit of adjustment. So, once the concrete's gone off totally, they can tighten them right up.
28:20It was a bit fiddly, because as you tension them, if you tension one up too much, then it makes the others go slack.
28:27So, it's a little bit on each one. But we got there in the end. Woo-hoo!
28:33There's just a few screws to tighten on the swing seat.
28:37Ta-da! Wow, look at that.
28:40Go on, then. Have a seat in it, Amelia.
28:44So, ready to test drive.
28:46You should fan over the tracheacarpus, Lee.
28:48Yeah, come on, Charlie. Let's get a nice breeze going.
28:53So, next up, planting. We've already got the tracheacarpus in, which I actually think that will work quite well there, just as a little pop behind the seating.
29:01Right then, bit of a tidy up.
29:03Get the planting. Okay, here we go.
29:05Oh, can you get it out?
29:06Just about there.
29:07Look at that.
29:07Thank you very much. Good teamwork.
29:11With the swing seat and patio in place.
29:13So, is that fancier about there?
29:15Charlie and Amelia.
29:16Look at this gorgeous variegated colour here, just absolutely stunning.
29:21Are keen to start planting.
29:24Brilliant. Perfect.
29:26Do you want it opposite or staggered?
29:27I think a little bit staggered. So, if we bring her a little bit that way.
29:30Her?
29:31Her. I think it's a she.
29:32It's Phil. Hello.
29:33Do you reckon?
29:34Yeah.
29:35Why not?
29:35We need to name her next.
29:36She needs to be the focal point.
29:38Yeah, absolutely.
29:41Now, the greens really don't need to be the only pop of colour against the fence.
29:46Go for things like this gorgeous agapanthus. Look at that dusky blue against the fence.
29:50It just works so well and it's so simple.
29:58Now, I'm just popping in another unusual shrub.
30:02Calacanthus. This one is heartless wine and it's got these really gorgeous wine red flowers.
30:10Flowers May, June time, but then it often gets another flush of flowers in August.
30:16They're almost hypnotic. They sort of draw you in.
30:20That or I've had too much sun today.
30:24Tell me about it. Hot day of the year, isn't it?
30:26It's fortioso.
30:41Now, this here is a convolvulus and I think it's a really lovely shrub.
30:46It's very compact and you can see it's really just glistening in that sun.
30:52It kind of has an almost silvery hue to it.
30:54And the other thing that I love is that they are evergreen.
30:57So, at times of the year when maybe the garden's looking a little bit drab,
31:01this is bound to give the beds a little pop of that gorgeous silvery colour.
31:06For me, I think it's a bit of a winner. It kind of does everything.
31:10Right, we've got the post in here, we've got the wall plate at that end,
31:25and then we're going to have the horizontal burn across to hide the bins.
31:28So, yeah, we're making good progress.
31:35In contrast to the sunnier side of the garden over there,
31:39this side of the garden is a little bit shadier.
31:41So, we've got these gorgeous Carex Eversheen grasses, also known as Japanese sedge.
31:47And when I talk about drifts in planting, this is exactly what I mean.
31:51You've got this group of three here, which is a really naturalistic way of planting,
31:55because you'll just have this really gorgeous swathe coming through here.
31:59The other thing is they're nice and rustly, so they're quite textural and sensory.
32:04And when it's a bit windy, they'll make a lovely rustling noise. Gorgeous.
32:08Hey, it's looking fantastic already. Thank you very much.
32:19Claps make the difference. Thank you.
32:29That's the hole dug for my climbers. Now, Amelia's chosen two climbers that are quite vigorous,
32:36which is great because they'll come up and give a lovely dappled shade over the seating area,
32:41both evergreen or semi-evergreen. So, we've got Clematis armandii,
32:46snowdrift, lovely white flowers in the spring. And then on this side, we've got a honeysuckle.
32:54This honeysuckle is called Lonicera henrii, copper beauty, and it flowers later in the summer.
33:01And it's self-twining, so it will actually wrap around on its own,
33:05but it's definitely worth, when you're starting out with a climber, tying a few in,
33:10just so it sort of is tied in and it stops the wind from bashing it around as well.
33:16Lovely. Right.
33:23Gorgeous.
33:23At the side of the garden, the team have laid down gravel for a gravel garden.
33:35This section here is our Californian garden, and it's a real nod to Christine and Mike's travels.
33:42So, we've got Potentilla, we've got Verbena benariensis, Artemisia silverqueen, and some yuccas as well,
33:48drifting through. And these sort of plants love dry, arid, quite poor soil conditions,
33:56which is why we've planted them in this gravel here. But over time, these yuccas here,
34:01these variegated yuccas, will get a little bit bigger. And what they will do is throw out really
34:07tall spikes of flowers. You're also hiding the bins which are over there because your eye is just
34:12completely drawn to this amazing selection of plants.
34:15Now, Amelia has chosen one of my most favourite shrubs. It's known as lantern tree and you can see
34:31why. It's got these gorgeous pendulous flowers that hang down and they look like lanterns,
34:38exactly like lanterns. It's quite an upright shrub and it's reasonably slow growing. It will eventually
34:44get to about four metres high, but it takes quite a long time. And it flowers May, June, July time.
34:51It is evergreen, so it adds the structure to this border. Now, it likes a neutral to acid soil,
34:58free draining, but it is absolutely fabulous. Really fantastic and a great talking point.
35:06Amelia and the team have put their heart and soul into creating an art deco inspired space in Stockport
35:19in just two days. The last little bit. The finishing touches. Look at that. That actually works really
35:30well with all the other timber, doesn't it? Yeah, it does. It's really good. Are you pleased? I'm so
35:36pleased. I think Christine and Mike are going to love it. I hope. I do as well. And it's got that art deco
35:44vibe to it with the structure of the plant leaves and the paving. Yeah, very vibrant. You know,
35:50they wanted lots of colour and warmth and I think the planting itself really delivers that. Right,
35:55you're going to get them out because I would love to sit here all the time. I think let's bring them
35:58out. Let's see what they think. Moment of truth. Christine and Mike's garden was once weed ridden
36:06with overgrown shrubs and tricky levels in an awkwardly shaped space.
36:13But with a £5,500 budget, it's been transformed into a colourful curated plot
36:24inspired by the couple's love for art deco. It's now perfect for socialising or simply spending time in.
36:32OK, so if you guys come this way. Right. So, you really wanted art deco, big wow factor,
36:46hints of California, colour, glamour. Yep. So, I really hope this garden delivers that for you.
36:52Are you ready to open your eyes? Yeah. Yeah. OK, all right, go for it.
36:56Oh, my goodness. Wow. That is magnificent. Is this our garden? Yes. I take it, you're pleased.
37:11That is incredible. I think they like it. Oh, Amelia. Oh, my God, that's absolutely incredible.
37:19Oh, that was magnificent. Thank you very much. That's fantastic. So, yeah, you've got your lovely
37:29swing seat at the end now. Nice focal point. Absolutely. Mike, that's somewhere you can enjoy
37:34in retirement, I hope. Absolutely, yes. Put Christine to work in the garden.
37:42Oh, wow. I can just see myself up there. Oh, it's just beautiful. I couldn't have asked for more.
37:47The couple once stepped onto a weed-filled, overwhelming patio. But they now arrive onto
37:54renovated tiles surrounded by planting and bordered by the California-inspired gravel garden.
38:02It's got that kind of dusty, arid Californian style. Yeah, it's magnificent. Yeah, thank you.
38:08Now, you can hopefully have a lovely, relaxing coffee here in the morning. We've never sat here.
38:14Right. We've never used it and never known how to make it usable. Right, how to sort of deal with
38:19it in a way. Yeah. Yeah. I think that we can use some of this space.
38:22This catches the sun at the end of the day anyway, so it's perfect. Yeah, beautiful.
38:25Absolutely beautiful. Now, I've got a little bit of privacy as well from the neighbours. I know,
38:28I love that. It is amazing. It made the patio smaller by the house, but it actually looks bigger because of
38:36the planting. I'm dying to show you the rest of the garden if that's all right, so follow me.
38:41We're going to see it. The centre of the garden was once boring,
38:46with an uneven lawn bordered by nothing but weeds.
38:49It now hosts the wire-roofed pergola, primed to be covered by climbers, set over the patio with clay
38:59pavers, perfect for socialising. This is really the social hub of the garden,
39:08and I know that was really important to you guys, to have somewhere to be able to have friends,
39:13family, have a barbecue. Yeah. I love these tiles. Oh, these tiles are beautiful. So these are clay
39:19pavers, and they're picking up again that sort of tessellating, art deco feel. This is fantastic.
39:25I love the colour. Now, this pergola is made from oak, which is a hardwood. Oh, amazing. So it's very
39:31durable. It will stand the test of time, and then we've got these tension wires up above,
39:36and this clematis armandii will cover this in no time. So we're going to have a real canopy. Absolutely.
39:42Oh, that is the dream. Very amazing. It's a nice hot day like today. You might find you need that bit of shade.
39:49I mean, I always felt quite embarrassed to entertain people, so just having somewhere now,
39:54and surrounded by all these beautiful plants, I just, it's a real garden I feel proud of.
40:00It is gorgeous, and when all those plants are grown up, you'll just be in a cocoon of colour and scent.
40:07I can't wait for these to fill out, because they just feel so tropical,
40:11and I think that's also part of that Californian inspiration is to have that sort of tropical
40:17feel. Glamorous.
40:18In Stockport. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Bring California here.
40:22All day long.
40:23Mike and Christine rarely ventured to the overgrown rear of the garden, but a swing seat enveloped by
40:31tropical planting now make it the perfect space for unwinding and admiring the whole space.
40:38Now, this is really the pinnacle of the garden, Christine and Mike, so hopefully you can enjoy
40:44some lovely, relaxing evenings. This is magnificent. I love it. Absolutely love it.
40:48This is the dream. This has been the dream for quite a few years. We kept going to these gardening
40:53shows and seeing wooden swing seats and then sitting in. I think this is nice.
40:57This is lovely. This is nice, yeah. And where do we put it in the garden? Right, yeah.
41:01How do we make it work? So this is the dream. Do you want to have a little trial now, or...?
41:05Yep. Yeah? Absolutely. No time like the present.
41:08OK. So how's that? Oh, that's lovely. Oh.
41:13Then you've got a lovely focal point looking down the garden, surrounded by plants.
41:17I've never seen the house in this direction before. No, I've not either.
41:21Mike is going to spend all his time up there, I am sure. Where's the sign saying Mike's seat?
41:27We... Actually, we need to label it, just so that there's no confusion.
41:31You've got these Trachycarpus palms here at the back and this hibiscus and fatsia japonica,
41:37and after a couple of years, those will really mature and fill out, so it should hopefully feel like
41:42a lovely verdant corner of the garden. Yeah, and I think once they grow, it's going to add to that
41:47tropical feel, which is really important. So, Christine and Mike, has it been worth it?
41:53Oh, 100% worth it. 100%, yes, it has. 100%. I think it's beautiful. It's better than I thought.
42:00Fantastic. It's a garden to be proud of. Yeah. Yeah.
42:04So, obviously, I haven't done this alone. Let's bring in Charlie. Charlie, are you, uh...?
42:10I'm here, I'm here. She's here. They... Amelia, Amelia, they've stolen your seat. I know.
42:18Do you like it? Absolutely. Marvellous. It's a beautiful garden, isn't it? It's absolutely
42:24gorgeous, and you always think, oh, I'm not green-fingered, I can't do this, but I'm going
42:30to learn about this, I'm going to have a go, and... Best way to learn is to have it, and then you're
42:36going to be watering it, and you'll notice things, and you'll just learn by doing it.
42:42It's the best way. It's the best way. Absolutely.
42:44Best way. So, that's the payoff. You get the swing seat if you do the gardening.
42:49That's the retirement plan. Seems like a reasonable...
42:51Yeah. I think that's what I would say. Can I go back on this now?
42:54No. Too late. It's on camera.
42:58I really wasn't expecting to be so overwhelmed and to have such an emotional reaction, but
43:12it's got all these memories of family and our trip, and it's everything intertwined. I love it.
43:18Truly magnificent. Truly magnificent.
43:23I love it.
43:37I love it.
