00:001972 Yamaha XS650, otherwise known as an XS2. The aim here is to get the bike on
00:06the road and take you along for the ride. How do we assess it? What do we look
00:10for? What do we work on? How do we make it run again? It was a pretty good-looking
00:13bike. It's relatively complete, original headlight shell. The only kind of
00:17deviation here is somebody bobbed the fenders a little bit, so they cut the
00:20stainless fenders down. Let's see what we got for mileage. It's a little dusty, but
00:2436,000 miles. Not unreasonable. Hey, where's the key? It looks like somebody's
00:31tried to hit this with a screwdriver. We do have the key. I was partly kidding.
00:35Anyway, pretty complete. It's got all the badges. That stuff's hard to find. Very
00:38cool, a tuning fork gas cap. Yeah, let's open this and see what it smells like.
00:42See what we got. Oh, that's not good. The rubber's coming apart here. Our flashlight
00:46in here. Actually pretty clean. The gas color is not great. I'm gonna do the
00:50worst thing I can do. Oh yeah, that's gross. That's the smell of... you know that.
00:55Once you try that a few times, you absolutely know what old gas smells like
00:59and it's bad. Car boots are looking decent. Carbs, meh, fine. A little bit of
01:03drool coming out of them. A mouse turds, that's not a good sign. They're
01:06indiscriminate chewers. Let's get under the seat. Oh, so that's a big turd.
01:13Unfortunately, I know the difference between rat and mouse and I don't want to
01:18touch it, but there's that hantavirus thing. But that's mouse turds and then
01:21there's a big one in there that's definitely a rat. So that's gross. We'll
01:24get that over here. Wash your hands. Battery box is empty except for chewed
01:29acorns. I think it has a center stand. Thank goodness. Oh, it rolls! Yeah!
01:36Okay, we'll just not look at that for a minute. Yep, spark plugs are in. Is that too
01:42easy to kick through? That's promising. I got this bike for free from a guy who left it in San
01:47Francisco. He left it with a shop that was supposed to, you know, get it running and
01:51build it into something and they were gonna split the proceeds and that guy
01:54never touched it. It's more faded on one side than the other. So when you put the
01:58kickstand down over here, this side of the bike is more faded. So it's probably sat
02:01outside most of its life. Ooh, let's check the brake. Oh, that's alright. It's not great, but
02:07it's got pressure. No battery, that's one thing. Moving into the shop. Let's see what we got.
02:11I don't want to take all this dirt in the shop. Should I hose it off first? Yes,
02:16is the answer. We won't go crazy. They are 450, 480 pounds. They're not made of
02:28titanium. We'll vacuum it out real quick, clean the box, and we'll get some power on
02:33this and see if it powers up. We know it kicks through. Cleared for takeoff. Fairly
02:38nutty though. See all that down there?
02:42Got the key. It's got a little Buddha attached to it and it looks like an
02:46original key with a key number on it and everything. The plating is obviously kind
02:50of worn off because it's been around. It turns on. Okay, we got nice crisp clicks.
02:55It's always good to have a to-do list. There's more to come because we've got to
02:59figure out what to do, but I make to-do lists. Check. Did it. Got her done. We have a new
03:03battery. I put the battery acid in it. It's a flooded lead acid battery. Very old
03:08school. Got it because it was cheap. I have it hooked up to a battery tender
03:12because when they're dry charged, they're usually not, you know, tip top. It's got
03:16brand new acid on the battery tender. Step three, we could write in, but we're
03:20going to put power on the leads using a jump box. This is a 1500 amp jump box by
03:25battery tender. I've been carrying it around in my pickup truck because I'm
03:28limping the battery. I'm trying to get the most battery life out of it, so in
03:32case I need to squeeze a little juice into my battery, I could do that. This
03:35comes with a wall charger. It comes with these clips. Reverse connection protection.
03:39So if you don't know your pluses and minuses or you goof and it's dark, it fixes it.
03:44If it's dark, you can hit this flashlight. Super bright flashlight. Okay, so I got a
03:48green light here. Don't touch the leads. Although they are spark protected, you can
03:52touch the leads, but as a rule, I try not to. This terminal is connected directly to the
03:57frame, and this is a negative ground motorcycle. So we will hook the positive
04:01up, and it's not touching any chassis parts, and we'll hook the negative up.
04:06It says it's ready. It was fully in the green. Wall charged it. Oh, there it goes.
04:12Ooh. Uh-oh. Okay, it lives. So this is protecting itself from trying to run the bike.
04:19Well, we'll get the battery in, and if we need extra juice on the battery, if it's not 100%, with that battery
04:24connected, this will detect the resistance of the battery. I think that's what's
04:28happening. It's not, it's not detecting the resistance in the circuit because
04:31there isn't a battery. So we'll hook the battery up, and if it doesn't have enough
04:34juice, we'll use a jump box. Flooded lead-acid battery. It's quality battery, but
04:37it's the least expensive type. It's just a regular flooded lead-acid, not AGM. None of
04:41that. I have it on a battery tender. It's 800 milliamps. It appears to still be
04:46charging. I didn't put it on that long ago. So also, I use this plastic bucket just as a
04:51safety measure only with this kind of battery, really, because it's vented. And
04:54if for some reason I overfilled it, and or I got it hot, the battery acid wouldn't
04:59go all over everywhere. It would stay in this plastic bucket. One downside with this
05:02kind of battery is that they can blow out noxious vapors. You have the vent over
05:08here. You hook up a tube, and you run that tube down past all the metal bits. We're
05:15gonna need to insulate. You don't need to murder these. Just get them snug, and then see if you can
05:21rotate the terminal. If you can't rotate, it's tight enough. We'll have to do
05:25something to protect the positive from this metal tray. You can see that's just
05:29dangerously close. So we'll put an insulating cap over this. The negative, you
05:33can touch anything you want, because the chassis is the negative, so there's no
05:37electricity flowing. This wire goes directly to the engine, and the engine is
05:41grounded to the frame. This is the positive. If we touch this to this, we'll
05:44make sparks, or even weld with all the amps that are in there. Big arcs, big sparks. There's no
05:50way. This is a 1972 battery hold down. What did I just say? We'll cover the
05:57terminal with tape, and I'll find a rubber red insulator. Let us know what the
06:01polarity is. Keep that arcing-ness from happening. And now we're just gonna put
06:05this piece of cardboard, and it's just a little extra barrier. Let's try the
06:10starter button. Oh no, let's check the oil. Let's check the oil. Good idea.
06:14Oh, mouse turd. Just clean the filler cap before you... I don't want a mouse turd in the
06:20oil, even if the oil is very turdy itself. Look at this. Wow, metal dipstick. It is oil, I think.
06:27Oh yeah. Smells like the floats might have got stuck and let fuel into this at some
06:32point. I feel confident we're gonna take these carbs off and work on them. All
06:35right, but there is oil. So we're going to power, we have lights. Ooh, hey, that's
06:42cranking. Okay, that's great. That was a pretty healthy crank too, so battery
06:46tender was doing the Lord's work. We're gonna pop a side cover, get access to the
06:49airbox, and get some of this ether. That's what starting fluid is, ether, and then see
06:53if it makes a pop. I smelled the gas earlier. Disgusting. My connoisseurship of
06:58aged gasoline would date it at least five years. All right, ignition parts. Oh boy, I'm
07:03pretty sure that this is a selenium rectifier. Once we get it running, we'll
07:07know, we'll kind of assess the charging system. Airbox, see if we can get some
07:11ether in there. We'll just go crazy.
07:16Hmm, might need a direct line or we're not getting spark. It's cranking over really
07:22nice. Sometimes the starter clutches on these are no good, but this one's doing
07:26great. So exciting, it rolled over. I don't have to kick it a thousand times.
07:31This is a 72. It's the first year for electric start. Oh, look at that. Are you
07:36kidding? That's so cool. It's on a hinge and it has a little clip, so you just pull
07:43it right out and then I'm gonna get you out. It is a pull tab, I'm sure of it.
07:48Well, let's just give it a try here.
08:06Oh, that's all I need. It's noisy, but it's probably not circulated. It's probably
08:10really dry. It isn't circulating in oil yet.
08:23Okay, we got something. We're gonna drain the fuel so we don't put this garbage into
08:28the carbs, but we're gonna get a siphon and drain that or we'll drain it out the
08:32petcock. Sometimes when you turn these on, after all this time they leak, but they
08:36sometimes swell back up and work. And that's what we're gonna cross fingers
08:40for. One more thing we're gonna do is just make sure there's nothing going on
08:43with the gearbox. We're gonna throw it in the center stand and just click it
08:46through the gears and make sure it engages. We know neutral is good because
08:49we push it in here and that's spinning real nice. So the resistance pushing it
08:53could be on the front brake, maybe if the caliper stuck, but it was hard to push. I
08:57think mostly because the tires are flat. She's free. There's first. Back to neutral.
09:01Second's good. Third's good. Fourth. Fifth. All right, we got five gears. Clutch.
09:09Okay, we got drag on the clutch, but we got an adjuster. We got, and I think maybe once it gets
09:18hot, you know, the plates will free up. But clutch works, sort of. Don't siphon by mouth. You don't
09:23want that stuff in your mouth. I use a pump, make a vacuum, get it low. Clear tube so you can see
09:28the fuel coming. Here it comes. Oh, there she goes. I took away from this gas sitting
09:33in the shed. Ronald Reagan was probably president. I'll probably check the plugs.
09:36Looking at them from here, the bodies are kind of shiny. I was just promising I
09:40should probably check the gap and then the color of the plug could possibly tell us
09:44something depending on whether the plugs are new or old. First thing I want to do
09:48is just get it running, like triage it, get it on the road. I want to take it on like a
09:52200-mile ride up north of Santa Barbara to a restaurant in the kind of a biker place
09:56above, in the mountains above Santa Barbara. And then after that, go through
10:01system by system and make it into like a daily rider like it would have been in
10:041972, but with maybe a few upgrades here and there like electronic ignition
10:08because I'm virtually certain there's gonna be points and everything's
10:11original, I think. We'll pull the points cover off and we'll look because they
10:14stick them under here sometimes. Bring it back. Put it on the road. Gas is out.
10:18There's a little bit at the bottom, which what I'm gonna do is I just, I looked at the
10:22carbs. There's a drain on the flow poles. So there's fuel in here. I'm gonna,
10:26undo the drains and get a little tray. I'm gonna open the petcocks and just
10:31cross fingers. Alright, the question is, do I make a huge mess or do I get a
10:35container? Let's do the right thing and get something I can slide under there. The
10:39petcocks are in the stop position, it looks like. Not a drop coming through,
10:44which means I probably just drained the tank pretty well. Let me get the other plug
10:48out. Of course, I don't have two bowls, but I do want gas to come out of both at the
10:52same time. Oh, this says on. Huh, who did that? Fuel gets sticky and sometimes it's
10:57sticky, like residue on the intake valves. This is just like a safety measure to
11:01keep the valves moving when it has a little pre-mix in it. So this is 50 to
11:041 pre-mix and it's ethanol free also. You know, it's only a million dollars a
11:09gallon. You don't want to run her every day. Well, that smells good. Don't do that.
11:15We'll put a little bit in and see if anything happens underneath the carbs.
11:18How's that? Oh, that's a nice pretty color. I wonder, does it have a vacuum pet
11:24cock? I wonder if I should read a manual. Nah. Wow, I guess I left it in gear. Yep. Okay, let's
11:36get back into neutral. That was more excitement than I was expecting. Let's
11:42pull the fuel hose. That's an idea. So this looks like fuel and there's a
11:46crossover hose in between the carbs. Let's just commit to in a whole can. Come
11:50on. Oh, there's a goof on my part. Well, it was kind of good the fuel wasn't
11:58running because the fuel lines were like rock solid. They would have leaked
12:01everywhere. I had them on regular, just normal, turn on the gas, not reserve. And
12:06that's, it wasn't putting gas out because it needs to be on reserve because
12:08there's not that much fuel in there. So I'm turning off the fuel and I was like, oh, I'm
12:11going to run this fuel hose, which was our siphon hose because it fits, but I don't
12:16see anything really holding the tank on and I could see in between the carbs. So
12:20I'm just going to see if I can lift the tank off because you see here, there's
12:22just a pin with a crusty bushing in it. And I think if I just, since I
12:26disconnected the lines, there doesn't appear to be a crossover tube between the
12:30sides. They have pet cocks on both sides indicating usually that they don't have a
12:34crossover and it's just lifting right off. Try that on your brand new
12:40FZ09. Great bike. Probably don't ever have to take the tank off. And we'll pull
12:46this fuel line. Oh, it did come good. See how it was broken? It's broken. I thought
12:51I was going to have to figure out how to get that off. While that's open, I'm just
12:54going to blast the daylights out of it with some carb spray, even though I don't have
12:58high hopes. But as long as we're running straight in, I'm just going to put some hot
13:02stuff in there. By hot, I mean just a hot solvent carb spray. Dude, there's nuts on top of
13:07the engine. Acorns on top of the engine. No nibbles on the wiring, it doesn't look like.
13:15So that's good. Not clear. I like having it clear just so you can see the fuel flowing,
13:18but we can do a better job later. All right, that's home. And it was hard enough to push
13:24on there. I feel confident. Just long enough. You know, sometimes you think of things in
13:33the middle of a job where you're like, hey, you know what? This is a motorcycle lift. Why
13:37am I kneeling on the ground? We'll just roll with it for now and then maybe we'll lift it
13:42up. I was just so optimistic, I guess, that I thought I could just roll it off and ride
13:46away. Cut her off right here. Okay, dripping out of the floats. Oh, there's a chunk in
13:52there. Got a little chunk of something in there. Or that could be mouse turds. Or it
13:58could be a death chunk inside the carb. I would hope for more than that. But I think
14:04I'm postponing the inevitable, which is taking the carbs off. We're just going to put this
14:09business right into the float. Solvent. Carb spray. See, we knocked the gun jaw. It was
14:15just coming back up the hose, so I feel confident I put a lot in there. See what happens. Choke
14:20is on. Oh, that's really good. Oh, that is not good. That might be this. Remember I said
14:29sometimes the starter clutch isn't great on these things? Starter clutch sometimes isn't
14:33great on these things. That was a terrible sound.
14:39You're running on gas. I was so unprepared for that to happen. Everything's falling off.
14:51You get out. You are not idling right now. That was unexpected. The carbs are leaking or
14:58it's just my poor choice of fuel hose. Let's figure that out. Fuel was raining down from the
15:04carburetors, not from the hose that I just put on the pecocks and not from the tank of the
15:08pecocks, which is super great news. But each carb has a pecock, but then there's a hose I can see
15:13joining the two carbs. I think based on this scientific discovery that I bet this is the
15:20same hose. It's all cracked and it's rock hard. This should be flexible and nice. So I think that
15:26crossover hose is leaking. We might end up pulling off the carbs. Right now I'm going to pull off the
15:30air filters. So the good news about fuel raining down from the carburetors is it rinsed off the top
15:34of the engine where there was all the mouse turds. Kind of dissolved them a little bit. Now what's
15:38cool about the popularity of this bike is that parts are everywhere. There's one in Florida,
15:43MyXXS. They got a zillion things. They were really popular in Germany and they still are. There's a
15:48million carb options. You can get Mikuni VM kits for them for not very much money. There's electronic
15:53ignitions, charging systems, all kinds of neat stuff. So it's exciting the possibilities.
15:57Ha! Okay it's bound to happen. It'll come out later. They make the filter replacement so easy I
16:06guess they don't expect you to take these off too much. Oh you know if the battery weren't there
16:10it would come right out. Do I dare take the battery out? Why not? You know your 10 millimeter wrench if
16:16you drop that across the terminals can be really exciting. We'll get it back on the trickle charger
16:21since we're going to be doing this a while. Back in the bucket. No leaks. Great. Battery tender
16:29engaged. This should come right out right? That's the joke. Yep. That was all we needed. That battery
16:35was my clearance. It's not the cleanest air filter ever. This cool cute little polish. It's just real
16:40dirty. Piss paper. It's gonna be fine. Oh nice little fine mesh screen in there. We could restore that with
16:45some black paint. It'll look awesome. But you paint one part on a bike like this and then what happens?
16:51You gotta paint everything else. So maybe we paint nothing and love it for what it is. Oh yeah I dropped
16:55the other one too. I gotta get that. If you drop something get it right away or else you'll be
16:59looking for it for two years. Now this crossover pipe is hard as a rock. Oh man. Didn't want to
17:07pull carbs really. Or I kind of did actually. So they're racked carburetors meaning that they're
17:11bolted together. I definitely have to replace this hose because I can spin it and it's got cracks in it.
17:16So this is the hose that joins the two carves. Open the peacock and see what happens. It immediately
17:22comes out of the crossover. You can see it just making a mess cleaning up mouse poop. Let's get
17:27our hose selections. You thought it was a stool. It's a cutting board. And why don't I have a pad
17:31on the seat? You really shouldn't be sitting down in the shop anyway should you? I actually do intend
17:35to make a nice little a new base because you can see this particle board is disintegrating. I'll make
17:40one out of marine grade plywood. Sure. Come on. Get up. Hey no drips. No drips. She's working. Maybe not
17:47the permanent solution for the next 60,000 miles but I think we have a fuel type fuel system. It did
17:53idle sort of. It seemed like it might have been running on one. We'll get the battery back in.
17:57We're still charging. We'll just use it if it gets low. We'll jump it with the jump starter.
18:02Anybody know where I put the bolts? Oh yeah. By the batteries. I made a great discovery that the seat
18:07I could just take the seat off. It was kind of sticking up in the way and it actually has these
18:12two pins to slide on. I'll probably grease these but there's a thread here and there's there was no
18:16nut so you just slide the seat right off. I put the battery back in. I hooked the trickle charger back
18:21up the battery tender. It's got a 12 foot cable seven and a half amp protective fuse and it was cool
18:28because it fits from my quad box of 120 volts over there to this 12 volt battery and I've just been
18:33running that. It's not dripping fuel and I think I left the fuel on for the last you know hour and
18:38there's no fuel coming out so that's awesome. I knocked them all off. We got to bleed the front
18:42brake. We need tires tubes. Definitely put a question mark after balance wheels which I'm now
18:46racing. I can't ride with an unbalanced wheel. It makes me crazy. We're going to check the wheel
18:50bearings. Check charging system. We'll do that now when I fire it up. If I can fire it up and keep it
18:55running I'll get the multimeter and stick it on the terminals and then we'll see voltages while it's
19:00running and hopefully it's 13 or ish. Definitely oil change. Sump filter. Is the clutch okay? Don't
19:07really know. I'm not doing anything to the fork in this round. Maybe in the future but they're so
19:12pitted I'm not even going to put oil in them because if I put oil in it's just come out and
19:15it's going to lubricate the front brake and we don't want that. Disconnect our battery tender and get
19:19going. Watch out. Oh yeah. Slides are moving. That's shocking. I had to turn the idle way up though
19:40and that spitting back indicates we may have a kind of cloggy idle circuit. See which one's doing
19:47that. Left cylinder. That could be the pre-mix. It's making smoke rings. Smoking out of the left
19:57cylinder more. Let's get the multimeter and check the voltage. Now I have a, this is a pretty nice,
20:02it's a Fluke. It's a good craftsman but it's made by Fluke. Auto ranging, pretty high zoot but just to
20:07show you could do it with something that's like six bucks from the hardware store and also analog
20:11can be nice. Having the needle when you don't want to know to the seventh decimal how many volts it's
20:16making. You just want to know is it like 12 or is it 13. Go to the 50 volt range and see what we got.
20:22Okay it's reading 12 and a half. Rev it a little bit. Yeah steady.
20:29Oh cool. I'm going to take this off the fender before your vibration ruins my cheap meter.
20:38All right this is really good news. It's charging and when you rev it up slow the voltage went up
20:42it would swing back meaning the voltage is rising because the alternator is spinning faster and then
20:47the regulator would come in and say no we don't need 15 volts and it would take it back to 13.5 or
20:53something. So we're in good shape. It's charging. Let's get this trash out of the engine. I've never
20:58changed the oil on an XS650. This is a manual from all models 1964 through 72 and I have another one
21:07XS1B. This is an XS2. XS1B was a 1971. The main difference being electric start. This has electric
21:15start. This one did not but it should be accurate for oil changes. Wow it's detailed. We need to rebuild
21:21the engine. We can do it. Oh look float height. Everything in this manual is clean. Why this
21:26doesn't look like reality. It takes three liters total. It's on the side. It actually says 2500 cc's
21:33so we'll drain this out let it drain. We also have to take the sump off. It was really nice of Bradley
21:37to uh remind me to lift this up otherwise I'd be laying on the ground. But yeah if you have a lift
21:42it's super useful. If you don't it's cool. I've spent years working on concrete and I'm the worst for it.
21:48Ah there we go. Oh geez. Oh geez this is really coming out. What a mess. All right learning lessons.
21:54Sorry. It's just black. It didn't have a lot of bits in it. Well look at that. Look at the surface
22:00of the black moon. It's at the bottom. It's fine. As far as oil changes go you'd think I'd done this
22:05before but maybe I haven't. Okay we're gonna get our fresh clean tray. What are the odds that this is
22:10too small? I think the bulk of it came out the trans. So the transmission it's a unit unit
22:16construction meaning the engine and the transmission share oil and there's a gear primary not a chain.
22:21There we go. That was a lot better. Ow. Hot. So this was the rear drain plug over the trans.
22:27Oh my goodness. Look at that. Oh boy. I'm not even sure what that is. It doesn't feel like metal. It just
22:32feels like gunge. Older oils tended to sludge more. They had more wax in them. They would get kind of
22:37almost like waxy when they got old. We got to get this sump plate off because with that
22:40disgusting bit in there. What are we looking at? Ten? I don't remember how many hours of my life I've
22:45spent just unscrewing things. Okay. I have no idea what is under here other than I know it's a
22:55that. Oh okay. Has a gasket. Great. Has sludge. Well hopefully that kept all the sludge because this is
23:02gross. This is truly disgusting. That's the sump filter. I got a new one. I think you can see
23:07all this other gunge here. Again just debris. Not metal. Nobody said it would be clean. We're not
23:13doing this because it's easy but because we thought it would be easy. Oh that's where it does its thing
23:20is right there. So this feeds into the engines. It goes here through this screen through here and I
23:26think that's where the oil pickup is. It probably is cleanable but I have a new one. This is gonna need
23:30some cleaning. These are really neat. They're automotive seal tools. So when you're putting a door seal on a car
23:36they have these different shapes but they're also made out of you know nylon something. It's real
23:40tough but it's not scratchy usually and you can use them to scrape things. All right it's getting
23:45better. It was really filthy. I have a small amount of solvent on it to kind of get into the nooks and
23:50crannies. I took most of the gunge off. I like to use liquid green grease cutter or purple grease
23:55cutter and water. This is made of aluminum. It doesn't have any complicated passages so putting it in
24:00water no big deal. It's just not as hardcore as solvent. Still getting more bits out of the
24:06corners. I realize this is kind of what they would describe perhaps as a fool's errand in the sense
24:11that this will be the cleanest part of that engine. How could you not do what I'm doing? Well I guess if
24:16I was actually smart I would have just ridden it how it was. I could have grabbed a helmet. It was
24:20running. Brakes I bet would have been fine for a 25 mile an hour zip. I could have gone through the gears
24:24but I felt so sad about the oil when we checked it earlier and I looked at it and it was all black
24:30and liquidy and just gross and I thought you know let's get that stuff out of there. I don't want to
24:34run this thing and cause problems. Hey remember what I said earlier about the thing was parked on its
24:39side stand in the sun for decades? That is the sun side. See how it's almost pink and the pigment's
24:45almost gone and then this is that really rich candy red color. This is our new sump filter Fuji
24:51element made in Japan and we'll take off this side where the supposed oil filter is. I know all
24:56you guys love not all you guys but many folks like to put stainless hardware kits on aluminum
25:01engines. I'm not a big fan of that because stainless can seize to aluminum. They're dissimilar. They can be
25:06very hard to get out. Regular old steel is a little in my opinion that's what I would stick with.
25:11Oh yeah oof you know you worry you really worry when it's I give it kind of a snap you know like
25:17not the kind of not the bad snap the good snap. Ah stuff's coming out. Oh that's the stuff I just
25:23sprayed on it. All right see what we got in here. Oh that that's the gasket I got. Oh that's a little
25:29filter. Huh well that wasn't too bad. This is looking pretty good. It's clean. Uh weren't weren't
25:35too too many sparkly bits in there. I'm gonna pop it back together. Click. My torque arm just told me
25:41probably could use a torque wrench on this but I think we're okay. We're just you don't want them to be
25:44murdered tight. Just tight enough. So this is pretty darn clean. Uh the remaining bits on here
25:49are sort of like tattoos. The gasket should be okay to put on without stuff. I'm almost tempted
25:55to go get a quarter inch drive but we'll be uh gentle with our big thing. We don't want to crush
26:00this. Okay that's pretty good. So what's clever is this seals off the pickup for the feed to the pump
26:07and then it's it's off the bottom. It allowed the debris to settle here. Be drained out. That gives
26:13the engine the best possible chance of survival instead of just picking up out of this the swamp.
26:17So the nice thing about Japanese bikes of the era versus their British counterparts is the castings
26:22were pretty darn good. They were die casting a lot of stuff. This appears die cast. It's got a little
26:26Yamaha tuning fork on it. Very cool. Quite the reputation as leakers. These some plates but also some guys
26:32are like nah if you just do it just right everything's perfect. So all you XS650 gurus out there you can
26:37excoriate me in the comments. That's what they're for. You can tell me how wrong I am. If I ride down a dirt
26:42road I don't want to be paving it at the same time. That's an oil leak joke. When you ride a lot of
26:46British too you you get a lot of oil leak jokes. You learn them and they stay with you. All right
26:50but we're riding Japanese so let's see what happens. Well we'll have to get it on the right way so that
26:54the oil pickup picks up oil. Yeah I just want to turn the motorcycle upside down. Yep opposite corners
26:59hold it up and let's start all these guys. Sure we can move that. Makes sense. Don't want to drop
27:04these bolts into there. Okay so seven foot pounds. This is inch pounds. Seven times 12. 84. I'm an
27:13English major and I did that. I'm probably overdoing this but I'm paranoid. That should be good. Oil
27:18filter's back in. Plugs. We better put the plugs in. That's never happened to me before forgetting to
27:23put the plug. Oh boy. These are big. Okay what does it all mean? Maybe that we should put oil in
27:32it? That's so scary but how could it be worse than it was? This dipstick is amazing. It weighs like
27:39half a pound you know. If it was a steak I would eat it. Why this is a mangled cork gasket. Mystery
27:46solved. So we had a cork gasket over here and I'm certain I'm so certain I'm going to cut it off
27:52and use it. I'm sure there's a YouTube video on this. Oh wait a minute. Again because it was
27:57500,000 of these things sold. There's a lot of expertise. People have been working on them a long
28:01time. There's still you know techs out there who are working on them as new bikes. Doesn't look too
28:06bad. It looks pretty good. See some transmission gears. It's not covered in horrors. Two and a half
28:11liters. We're going to put two in and see where it ends up. Should have used the funnel. I didn't spill but
28:16it's inevitable almost. So it's a 650 parallel twin. It's actually 653 cc's. I believe the bore is 75
28:23millimeters and the stroke 74 so it's what we would call slightly over square. Parallel twin 360 degree
28:29meaning the pistons move up and down together. Firing is even 360 degrees apart so it makes it
28:36very even very British sound. It was cool. I found a graphic in the manual that showed that you don't
28:41screw this all the way in. You just put it in there until the threads hit and you take it out
28:48and you read it and we're it hasn't run so it hasn't circulated in any oil but I'm less than a
28:54liter to go so I'll put that in. Okay no terrible starter noises. Wow that was cool. Better give it
29:01throttle. This thing actually sounds pretty good. That's good rough throttle response. Headlight's not
29:20on. Hey what do you know? Headlight switch. Before they were mandatory to be on all the time so we
29:28have headlights. We even have high beam and low beam. Let's get the pan and get some stuff off
29:36of here. Sump filter. You're done. Oil change. You're done. Forks are no hopper so that's done.
29:41We did check the charging system. Aired up the tires. The back had 3.6 pounds. The front had
29:46undetectable. Undetectable! Did hear a hiss when I put the gauge you know tire pressure gauge on but it
29:53could have been air going in. It could have been a vacuum man. I just want to check the axles because
29:58actually it was messing around and this axle nut I can turn by hand. Pretty short handle but that
30:03is tight. Looks good. Sounds good too actually. Chain's in good shape. Heave ho! Okay thanks. All right
30:11coming at you. I think that's good. Welcome to day two. We were very close to riding it last night.
30:17It was extremely late. It was dark. We thought you know we're not going to show the bike running. We're
30:22not going to get that experience. We're like hey you know let's rest up. We parked it put it on the lift.
30:26It was complete. You can see the seats off again. The battery is out. The fuel lines I selected
30:31yesterday were not fuel proof. Imagine my disappointment to come out and see a little
30:36bit of fuel under the bike. This black rubber hose it was real pliable. It's nice hose and I
30:41thought oh man this will be great but it was leaking unusable so we had to get rid of that.
30:45Basically rehosed it. The disappointment is of course taking the battery out again because every time I take
30:49the battery out I see mouse poop. I got to clean that but it's just uh you got to take that out to get
30:55the filters off. But we're in good shape. A few more minor details and we'll take it for a ride.
30:58Hey real quick we wanted to thank Deltran for sponsoring the video. We've been using the products
31:02throughout the whole program Ramon Parked. We've been using the battery tender junior 800 milliamp
31:08charger. It's a trickle charger. We used it to juice up the brand new battery before we installed it
31:12and we also would put it on between takes. We cranked this thing so much we also used the 12 volt
31:18vehicle starter. It's 1500 amps which is vastly more amperage than we'd ever need for a 72XS650.
31:24You can also use it to start your pickup truck. It's small compact. It has a really nice carry case.
31:28It's circuit protected. It's got USB, USB-C and an output for laptops and a very bright flashlight
31:35in case you know you need that which we might. We actually might need that. There's a link in the
31:40description. You can go check them out. It supports our work here and we thank you for the support,
31:44Deltran and thank you for watching. We'll get back to the video. Let's get this thing off the lift and
31:47take her out and go for a ride. First time in many many many many years. It's been a pretty good
31:54process and journey. Can't believe we dodged the carburation bullet you know solving things with
32:01solvent. Maybe that's why they call it that. I'm gonna get this thing out of the out of the yard.
32:06I'll meet you on the road. Oh big turd. All right here we go moment of truth. We're gonna start on a
32:11kick-start it we think. Yes!
32:15Ha!
32:17Ha ha ha!
32:18Ha ha ha!
32:19Alright we just finished the ride. It was amazing. You know after a very long time dormant. It ran
32:46continuously. I've been riding about 45 minutes. Never stalled. Turn off with the keys. It starts on
32:51the Kickstarter. Idle's pretty good. Stops okay. I could see why they were popular because it sounds
32:57really nice and especially on the meandering back roads that I've been riding on. Really fun.
33:02Really nice size. You know this is a nice size of motorcycle even for a gorilla like me. It just feels
33:07like a good place to sit and it sounds good. You know five speeds you get up into fifth. Very cool.
33:11Just a really fun bike to ride. I'm so glad it's out living again and we can do more stuff to it to
33:17improve it. So I'm really looking forward to that. I think the takeaway from the project is the worst
33:22thing you can do to a motorcycle is let it sit. I can't blame myself can I? It was my fault. I'm
33:27sorry it was my fault. Luckily in our case it didn't take too much to bring it back. There's more work
33:31to be done. I think we were thoughtful with with the oil change and cleaning the underside of the bike
33:35and just getting as much detail as we could to get it to this state. I just love putting heat back into
33:40something that's been sitting. I'd love to do more of it especially with you guys. Hey hopefully
33:44this inspires you to get your own bike out of storage or go find something that's been sitting
33:50and revive it and get it on the road. We're going to do a few more things to this bike
33:53and get it ready for a long ride. Thank you for watching. See you next time.
33:57I mean Yamaha XS 650 lives. I gotta go. I'm gonna I'm going to the gas station. I'm gonna get a steak.
