00:00active shooter inside of 345 Park Avenue at 52nd Street in Manhattan.
00:06A double parked black BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets,
00:13carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand, and immediately opened fire on an NYPD officer.
00:19We have five victims shot, our officer, and four other innocent civilians, plus the shooter.
00:26The information that I'm about to provide is preliminary and subject to change.
00:31At 6.28 p.m., the 911 call center started receiving multiple 911 calls for an active shooter
00:38inside of 345 Park Avenue at 52nd Street in Manhattan.
00:44What happened next is under an active investigation, and details are still coming in,
00:49but here's what we know so far.
00:52The surveillance video shows a male exit a double parked black BMW on Park Avenue
00:59between 51st and 52nd Streets, carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand.
01:05He walks towards the building's entrance.
01:08That individual was seen exiting the BMW alone.
01:12The building's security camera footage shows the shooter enter the lobby, turn right,
01:18and immediately opened fire on an NYPD officer.
01:21He then shoots a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeds through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire.
01:29He makes his way to the elevator bank, where he shoots a security guard who was taking cover behind the security desk.
01:38One additional male is shot in the lobby, per his own statement from the hospital.
01:43The shooter then calls the elevator, which opens in the lobby.
01:48A female exits that elevator, and he allows her to walk past him unharmed.
01:53He goes up to the 33rd floor, which is Rudin Management, and begins to walk the floor, firing rounds as he traveled.
02:03One person was struck and killed on that floor.
02:05He then proceeds down a hallway and shoots himself in the chest.
02:11In total, we have five victims shot, our officer, and four other innocent civilians, plus the shooter.
02:20The shooter is believed to be Shane Tamora, a 27-year-old male with a Las Vegas address.
02:27The vehicle he exited is registered in Nevada to Mr. Tamora.
02:33Inside of that vehicle, officers found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition, and magazines,
02:40a backpack, and medication prescribed to Mr. Tamora.
02:45The vehicle was searched by our bomb squad and found to be clear of any explosives.
02:50The initial investigation shows that Mr. Tamora's vehicle traveled cross-country through Colorado on July 26th,
03:00then Nebraska and Iowa on July 27th, and then in Columbia, New Jersey, as recently as 4.24 p.m. today.
03:09The vehicle entered New York City shortly thereafter.
03:13According to our law enforcement partners in Las Vegas, Mr. Tamora has a documented mental health history.
03:19His motives are still under investigation, and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location.
03:28345 Park Avenue is a commercial office building whose tenants include the NFL, Rood and Management, KPMG, and Blackstone.
03:38At this time, four of the five victims are deceased, including our NYPD cop.
03:44Our officer was transported here to New York Presbyterian, along with one male civilian, the lone shooting survivor,
03:52who is in critical but stable condition at this time.
03:56Two other civilians, one male and one female, both deceased, were brought to Bellevue.
04:01The fourth civilian is a female who was found dead on the 33rd floor of the location.
04:07Additionally, there are four other victims being treated for minor injuries sustained in their attempts to flee the scene.
04:16Victims' names are being withheld at this time, pending family notification.
04:22Officers from our Special Operations Division are currently conducting a secondary sweep of the entire building.
04:28I want to be very clear, we believe this to be a lone shooter, and there is no longer an active threat to the public.
04:37But today, four innocent victims are dead.
04:42Among them is NYPD police officer Diderul Islam, 36 years old, four years on the job.
04:50Officer Islam was married with two young boys, and his wife is pregnant with their third child.
04:56He's assigned to the 4-7 precinct in the Bronx.
05:00He was doing the job that we asked him to do.
05:03He put himself in harm's way.
05:05He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city.
05:14He died as he lived, a hero.
05:17I want to extend my profound sympathies to all of the victims and their families, and to the brave NYPD cops who today lost a brother.
05:29There are still many questions that we have to answer, and we will answer them.
05:33But for now, our city is in mourning for the innocent lives lost.
05:39May their memories be a blessing.
05:41I believe that there were two officers in the building working pay detail assignments in different parts of the building.
05:47And what is that if people, you know, may say he's on a day off working in a uniform?
05:52Pay detail is a program that we have set up at the police department that allows companies to hire officers in uniform to provide extra uniform security.
06:05I already described what we found in the vehicle, and it's too early in the investigation to discuss anything more.
06:28As I said, too early in this investigation to tell, but nothing that we have seen preliminarily.
06:42Commissioner, can you talk about what the medication was that was found on the vehicle?
06:45I cannot.
06:46Can you speak about any prior law enforcement contact you may have had?
06:50I cannot, other than to say that our partners in Las Vegas made us aware of a mental health history.
06:58Just what I said already, it was an M4 rifle, and we also found a revolver in the vehicle with ammunition and magazines.
07:23He did have a license in the state of Nevada.
07:28You're welcome.
07:30So there are two intelligence in the media that has issued a doctorate beforehand, and are you considering a period of time or an accident?
07:38At this time, it's too early in the investigation to tell.
