00:00A gunman opened fire inside a midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening,
00:11killing four people, including a New York City police officer, before the gunman took his own
00:16life. The shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise that houses the National Football
00:22League headquarters and several financial firms, including Blackstone. Among the victims was a
00:2736-year-old New York Police Department officer who had served on the force for three and a half
00:32years. The three other victims were civilians. Police Commissioner Jessica Tish confirmed that
00:39the shooter, a Las Vegas resident, had driven cross-country to New York in recent days. He
00:45fatally shot himself in the chest after the rampage. Authorities believe he acted alone,
00:51though the motive remains unclear. The tragedy has shaken residents in the area, with some expressing
00:57growing concerns over safety in the city. I've been here since COVID, five or six years. It's
01:02getting a lot scarier, a lot busier in a negative way. I just feel less safe. You feel it. I don't
01:11know. Like, I used to feel a lot safer, more comfortable just being in the area, being in the neighborhood. And, uh, I don't anymore, honestly.
01:20I really don't. Have you ever seen a police presence like this before? No, never. Not in the area, no.
01:25It's awful devastating, and there frankly is nothing else to think, but why couldn't this have been
01:32independent? Why was this person not to get it gone? What kind of systems were in place that allowed this to happen in the heart of the 10th? You know, like, it should never happen in the first place.
01:44New York City Mayor Eric Adams said authorities were conducting an active shooter investigation. He urged the public to stay indoors and avoid the area around Park Avenue and East 51st Street.
