00:00Debunking False Claims About Sun Cream
00:02Summer is officially here, which means that many Europeans will be swapping their computers
00:11and desk chairs for beachside sun loungers.
00:14Although sun cream is an essential summer product to avoid burned skin, every summer
00:19posts claiming that sun cream is in fact dangerous spread across social media.
00:24Some online users claim that sunscreens are dangerous because they contain ingredients
00:30like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are hormone disruptors.
00:36Oxybenzone, octinosate, and these are sunscreen filters.
00:39They're known as chemical filters where the UV rays are absorbed by these filters.
00:43It reduces the amount going into the skin.
00:46I know for a fact sunscreens are safe because I know even if there's a slight issue with
00:49a filter, it's been blown out of context in some situations.
00:52Sunscreen has been around since the 1930s, set up by L'Oreal, and whatever filters that
00:57we have in that time frame is massively changed.
01:01And that's based on research, based on new data coming out.
01:03And really, a lot of these sunscreens, if you look at the big brands, those filters,
01:08so oxybenzone, otherwise known as benzophazone 3, octinosate, they're not there anymore.
01:13Some online users have alleged that the commercialization of sun cream from the 1930s onwards is behind
01:20rising skin cancer cases.
01:22This graph shows an alleged correlation between the introduction of sun creams containing certain
01:27ingredients with rising skin cancer rates in the state of Connecticut in the US.
01:33However, the Connecticut Public Health Office told you or verify that although the data likely
01:37comes from the state's tumor registry, the text boxes linking rising rates to sun cream products
01:44had been added in afterwards and were not from their data.
01:47There is no data that sunscreen causes skin cancer.
01:51That is not true at all.
