00:00Good evening, thanks for your patience. Who would like to start us off? Emma from BBC.
00:22Congratulations Serena, just an incredible achievement, we all loved it.
00:28You're a European champion again, you're even dancing at full time as we were just discussing.
00:32Can you even explain how you feel right now?
00:35Well, I'm very happy. I actually can't believe it myself.
00:40It's like, yeah, I was like, how can this happen? But it happened.
00:46So, yeah, very happy. I'm so incredibly proud of the team and the staff.
00:51Yeah, we're just going to party tonight.
00:54Pride and imagine is a word that you'll use to describe Lucy Bronze,
00:57because she told us that she's been playing with a fractured tibia for the whole tournament.
01:02Is that true? That's absolutely crazy.
01:04Yeah, she had some issues with her tibia.
01:07So that's, of course, we try to manage that.
01:11When you play under 20 minutes, you're not managing it, aren't you?
01:15So, no, yeah, I told you, Lucy Bronze is just her mentality.
01:21I think the whole team has an incredible mentality, but she's a crazy mentality.
01:26It's unbelievable.
01:27Congratulations again.
01:29We'll go to Catherine.
01:31Hi, Serena.
01:32Chloe Kelly obviously scoring a winning penalty.
01:34She scored the goal in the Euros final as well.
01:36It's crazy to think in January she was, you know, maybe not on the verge of getting in the squad
01:41because she wasn't playing at Man City.
01:43It's such an incredible journey for her.
01:45Yeah, absolutely.
01:46Everyone, every player has her own story.
01:48And I think every story is incredible on its own.
01:52But for her, of course, most of the stories are in the open.
01:55And I'm so happy for her, too.
01:57And she has been fighting to come back and to be at her highest level.
02:03And she loves these moments.
02:04She just really wants to take that penalty, of course, and then celebrate that.
02:08But to be able to score that penalty under that pressure is very impressive, too.
02:14Two questions, if I may.
02:17First of all, how will you celebrate tonight?
02:20I'll do some more dancing.
02:22Dancing and drinking, or just dancing?
02:25No, I'll have a drink.
02:26But I don't think I will drink as much as the players probably will do.
02:31And secondly, of all the decisions you made before the tournament,
02:34perhaps the most controversial and the biggest call was Hannah Hampton.
02:38For her to go into the tournament admitting that maybe people didn't want her in goal,
02:43to end it the way she has, it's remarkable, isn't it?
02:47And I noticed that you leapt into her arms at the end of the shootout as well.
02:51Yeah.
02:52Yeah, what I just said, like every player has her own story and her own journey.
02:57And her journey has been incredible, too.
02:59And starting the tournament, of course, and then, of course, we lost the first game.
03:05So there's so much.
03:06Then you play, well, you hope to play five finals then.
03:09You really have to step up and show, so did she.
03:13I think she has done amazing.
03:15And then it's a little bit like a fairy tale when you then stop those penalties in the final of the Euros and win it.
03:23Hi, Serena. Congratulations.
03:26This all feels slightly ridiculous.
03:30I mean, we've all kind of said it.
03:31It is ridiculous.
03:32It feels like England almost should have gone out two or three times in this tournament,
03:36but now you've won the Euros title again.
03:38I know it's only just happened, but can you put into words what makes this team special
03:43and why this team has been able to overcome such incredible odds?
03:48Yeah, I must admit that I always think this is the most chaotic and ridiculous tournament we have played.
03:57And every time we could come back because quarterfinal, semifinal, now in the final we came behind.
04:04But this, of course, we have players that have talents.
04:08And the togetherness of this team is really, really incredible.
04:12But also the belief that we can come back and that the players say we can win by any means.
04:18And we just never, ever give up.
04:20And today, too, of course, we had moments that we really had to fight to keep the ball out of our own nets.
04:26But I thought we also had some very good moments in the game.
04:29I think we could have scored.
04:33He says I'm going to work out.
04:35I'm not planning on doing that anymore.
04:40So the belief to come back, also having the talent that every player is also ready to come on the pitch
04:48and show up straight away, that is not easy.
04:51Yeah, so it feels just, I'm just really grateful that I'm part of this team.
04:57And how much are you looking forward to a parade in a trophy in London on Tuesday?
05:01I'm very much looking forward to that.
05:03Well done.
05:06Thanks.
05:07Tom Gary.
05:08Congratulations, Serena.
05:09Fantastic.
05:10You brought back Jess Carter into the team.
05:13What a performance from her.
05:14She just won duel after duel after duel.
05:16Can you talk a bit about the way she played and how pleased you are for her after what a difficult tournament it was?
05:21Yeah.
05:22Well, first of all, it says again something about the team that we can make tactical decisions.
05:26I've said a couple of times now that I was really happy before the tournament with my squads and that we had players in the same position that can bring different things.
05:37And that was in this case too with Esme and Jess in Italy was a different game than Spain.
05:43And we felt that we needed Jess now in the starting lineup, exactly from the reasons that you say with the fight and the duel she can play.
05:50And she showed, of course, that she's a very, very strong personality and she was ready to perform also against Italy.
06:00But that was a tactical decision and now we've made a tactical decision and I have all the belief in her and she had to believe herself that's the most important thing that she could contribute to the team.
06:10And you could tell that the team trusted her too.
06:13What words would you use to describe the whole team, even the players who haven't actually played any minutes, are all kind of part of it, right?
06:19It doesn't seem to be any riffs or arguments. It's a real team. Can you talk about that a bit, please?
06:24Yeah, well, you know, of course, before we go into the tournament, you give as much clarity as possible.
06:31But, you know, also things can change really quickly and in tournaments things develop too.
06:36So, and before every single game you make decisions.
06:41But when we just, I know it's not easy for a player when you're a part of the team and you're not getting your minutes and everyone, of course, is ready to play.
06:53And also hopes for minutes. What we just do is keep having conversation, trying to give as much clarity as possible.
07:00And then it's up, of course, to the player, how to respond on that.
07:03But I think the team, the team did that really well. So players stepped up, showed up on training sessions.
07:10In the training sessions also get the highest level. So you're training also your teammates because the ones who go out on the pitch in the starting lineup,
07:20they need the good sessions too. And so getting ready, supporting your team, and that's the other way around too.
07:26And that's what makes this team so together and special.
07:29Thank you and enjoy tonight.
07:31Thanks. We'll go to Michael at The Athletic, please.
07:34Hi, Serena. Congratulations. Can I ask you about a couple of your tactical decisions today?
07:38Yeah. First, the wing is the other way around to what we expected.
07:42And second, slightly different position for, or different role for Lucy Bronze.
07:46What was the reason and how effective do you think those moves were?
07:50Yeah. Of course, we know with Spain, they are very aggressive. When they have to defend, they're very aggressive forwards.
07:57So what we want to do is get out of that first press. And with the changes, what we tried to do in midfield,
08:04create an overload and create space a little bit on the sides. So you saw Lauren Hemp a little lower at moments.
08:11But also, we switched the play and you would come in behind a little bit on the inside. We didn't do that that much. I hoped a little more.
08:20That you come with your right foot. So on the left side with Chloe later on with the right foot and Lauren Hemp from the right side inside with the left foot.
08:30So those were the reasons we tried to do that.
08:33Thanks, Michael. We'll go to Rachel.
08:35Hi, Serena. Congratulations again.
08:39You could say something astonishing about every single person on your team tonight.
08:43But just to ask another question about Chloe Kelly.
08:46What is it? Is that something inherent in her?
08:49Can you teach what she does in terms of being able to step up in these big moments?
08:53Is that something you can coach or is that something that's just something special she has in her?
08:57No, I think that's a little bit of both. It says something about the team environment and it says a lot about her character.
09:03And so everyone brings something different and she brings this.
09:07Thank you. Thanks. Jack from The Sun.
09:11Serena, you've spoken about the incredible belief all the players have had.
09:14Given everything you've been through and now that you've won it, was there ever a second moment where your belief had run out and you thought this was it?
09:21To be honest, tonight I didn't have that.
09:25I had a couple of times in the Sweden game and Italy game that I thought we might be going home tomorrow.
09:33But we still have a couple of minutes to go, but it's getting tight.
09:37But it's not that then the lack of belief is like, oh, we're getting really close now here.
09:43We have to, we have to, yeah, we have basically, we had to score.
09:47And against Sweden, of course, when we had the penalty shootout, when we missed a couple of penalties, we were lucky that they missed too.
09:54And that's what it made us through.
09:58Thanks. We'll go to Tom at ESPN.
10:00Spoken a fair bit about your speeches during the tournament and how much they've enjoyed them.
10:04Now that the tournament's over, could you give us a little taste of what you said to them before this match?
10:08What was your message to the team and what did you want them to take out into the pitch?
10:14Well, I've had a couple of meetings, but right before we went on the pitch, I just said, I can't use all the words I said, I think.
10:21But the main message was enjoy it. We've got so far now in this tournament.
10:27I think we all, we created something again together.
10:30So these are the moments where you dream of some couldn't even dream of because it wasn't possible when they were little kids.
10:37So go out there and enjoy it and play your very best game.
10:40And it's been a slightly crazy, chaotic four or five weeks.
10:44What's the journey been like for you? And we spoke before about how this is a movie.
10:48Is this a movie you'd like to watch again?
10:53Well, I don't watch movies back so often, but I probably look a little, probably the upcoming days, I will see some things back.
11:02The main things I looked back was the tactical footage of the games.
11:06So the rest of the movie, I'll probably take some time for that over the next couple of days.
11:11Yeah, it has been incredible.
11:16Of course, well, you know, around in the camp, the training sessions, everything around the team was very calm.
11:24You might not think that, but it was all very calm.
11:29Just the games were chaotic and very close and tight and we were behind a lot of games.
11:33Of course, we lost the first game.
11:35So, yeah, that was hard work for everyone.
11:40But then afterwards, yeah, it was all very calm and the environment we were in, we had, the facilities were incredible.
11:49The support from the Swiss people was incredible here.
11:52So that was really enjoyable.
11:55Thanks.
11:56We'll do three quick questions.
11:57We'll go to Simon Collins, Miguel and then Simon Hart at UEFA.
12:01Hi, Serena.
12:02We all obviously saw the impact from three years ago when you won the Euros.
12:05What do you think the impact and legacy will be from winning at this time?
12:09Well, that's a good question.
12:14I hope it will boost the women's game even more.
12:17Not only in England, but beyond.
12:20I think how I've experienced this tournament is that the level went up again.
12:25The intensity of the games went through the roof.
12:29That's what we've seen also, we've seen in the games, but also the data we have.
12:35And I just, I think this tournament broke every record again with the spectators,
12:44with, I think, the views of the television.
12:47And that's great.
12:48And I hope that that will bring, that will boost the women's game everywhere.
12:55Not only in England, but beyond.
12:57And, yeah, that's, yeah, I don't know really what to expect now in England.
13:03I think it will boost again.
13:06Miguel.
13:07Hi, Serena, congratulations.
13:09You just said that your message to the players was to enjoy it.
13:12Did you enjoy a game like that, or just when it's over?
13:15And so, are there any kind of moments that stand out for you beyond the goal,
13:19as having turned it, or that you kind of, that you actually celebrated yourself?
13:23Well, when the game is on, I don't really enjoy it.
13:27Of course, I enjoy it when we score a goal, but, well, what stood out?
13:36Yeah, the fight, I think, and then the, that we really, like, we said a couple of times,
13:43the players had a proper England, like today, we also had to defend very well.
13:48They were challenging us.
13:49But, how you see, we give everything to prevent the goal.
13:52I really, I do enjoy that, because that says something about the team and the togetherness,
13:58and the will to really want to win.
14:02Thanks.
14:03We'll finish with Simon Hart.
14:09Congratulations, Serena.
14:11I'd just like to ask you about the, any tweaks you made for the second half?
14:15What, whether there were any little structural changes or tactical instructions,
14:20just to change things in that second period?
14:22We didn't change that much.
14:24Chloe came in, and at moments, we wanted to put them under pressure a little more.
14:30So, on the half of the pitch, at moments, but not all the time,
14:36because when they get out, they get so dangerous.
14:38So, in the beginning of the second half, the team did that.
14:41And, of course, what we wanted, the first half, at moments, when we won the ball,
14:47we lost it too much and too quick.
14:49And the second half, we wanted to put up centre-forward higher,
14:53to stay a little bit there, that if we won it, that we could play and keep it,
14:58that the team had time to spread out again and then play football.
15:01I think we had some...
15:02It wasn't a workout.
15:03The workout stopped now.
15:05And, yeah, then we created some momentum in the game,
15:10because then they were running after us instead of the other way round.
15:13Thanks.
15:14Can I say something?
15:18Of course.
15:19Okay.
15:20Well, of course, I would like to thank you all for your contribution.
15:26We had some meetings before this Euros, where we, of course,
15:33you have to do your job, we are doing our job.
15:35And I think we made together a very incredible tournament.
15:39And I think the people at home or reading or listening or watching,
15:45I hope they enjoyed it.
15:48But the big contribution you had on that was great.
15:51And I would like to thank you for that.
15:54And you missed your families.
15:56You're away from home too.
15:57So hopefully you're ready to go home and celebrate a little bit.
16:00And I would like to thank everyone in Switzerland.
16:05Breaking records.
16:06Beautiful country.
16:08We felt very, very welcome here.
16:11We're staying in Zurich and we really enjoyed it there.
16:15They provided us everything that we needed.
16:18The UEFA, what a great tournament.
16:22What I just said, breaking records.
16:24So thank UEFA too.
16:29And now I don't know anymore who I was going to thank.
16:32And the whole organization.
16:34And, of course, the team, my team, the staff of my team,
16:37kind of a job in the FA because what we, we win the Euros.
16:43That's incredible.
16:44But the support we get from the FA and to be able to perform
16:49at our highest level is incredible.
16:51And last but not least, I would like to thank our fans.
16:55What an incredible fans we have.
16:58We have been in the stands in overloads all the time.
17:01We would like to have that on the pitch too.
17:02But we definitely had it in the stands that all these people
17:05come to the Euros and come support us and make some noise.
17:09That has really, we felt it.
17:11We've seen it.
17:12We've heard them.
17:13And that's incredible that everyone took the effort to come.
17:17And I think we broke probably.
17:19We'll see that over the next coming days that people watch on TV too.
17:22We've seen some footage on that.
17:24So thanks everyone.
17:26And let's have a cheer tomorrow.
17:33Okay.
17:35Thank you very much.
