Hi I'm Dan Grieve, head professional here at Woburn and we've got a beautiful wet summer's
00:10
day here at Woburn and we are going to talk about the muddy lie which I know for a lot of you amateur
00:15
golfers is a real difficult shot because it's so difficult to get that contact to get that ball
00:21
first contact from these lies is really tough so it's really all about setup so if we get the setup
00:25
right like all lies it becomes a lot easier so you'll see in some of the other videos we talk a
00:30
lot about the bounce and how the bounce is really your friend and for almost all short game shots
00:35
that's the case apart from this one really where it really becomes your foe so we need to make sure
00:40
we're using more of the leading edge more of the sharp leading edge to make sure we can get that
00:44
contact into the back of the ball when we start using too much to bounce off these lies the club
00:49
just goes into the turf and the ball just goes the other two in front of you so like all short game
00:53
shots it's critical that we get the setup right so if we if we look at this face on you'll see that
00:58
the book the key here is the ball position so we need that ball position to be just back of center
01:02
and let's make sure that the chest bone is a good couple of inches there in front of the ball
01:07
because that really dictates the low point in the swing a lot of club golfers I see they get way
01:12
behind it from these sort of lies so it brings a low point back and it's very easy to hit the ground
01:16
first so the key there is ball position just back of center let's make sure that the chest bones are
01:22
ahead and shoulders nice and level as well when you start tipping this right shoulder also makes
01:26
the low point appear too far behind the ball so nice level shoulders get the chest bone in front
01:32
of the ball and the key here is that leading edge getting into the back and really think about your
01:37
finish when you have a long finish you tend to release more of the bounce when you have a short
01:42
finish or curtailed finish with a little bit more pace it just allows the hands to stay a little bit
01:47
more ahead of the club head and get that ball first so let's see if we can play one a little bit like
01:53
this
01:53
a nice ball first contact it will go lower the ball will be fairly hot but that's the sacrifice to
02:11
making sense of getting the quality of that strike okay this is a really tough shot here okay but it is
02:16
real life we do get it sometimes so really wet muddy lie to a tight pin so the pin there is only
02:21
about four yards on now of course there's options here and really i probably would advise most of you
02:26
to play a low shot there with maybe with an eight or nine iron running it into the bank try and take
02:31
some pace off the ball but you know sometimes maybe you can't do that it might be a bunker there for
02:35
example so you've got to try and play the higher shot so one of the things you can do is get the
02:40
club selection right i've got my high toe 60 degree low bounce lob wedge here and what i really like
02:46
about this wedge is how it's really shaved down on the toe so the bounce really is measured in the
02:50
middle of the sole and and the toe there is shaved down so i can use that to my advantage here so
02:54
i'm going to set up with the toe lower than the heel i'm going to face a little bit open but really
03:00
put that toe down and address it slightly out the toe of the club as well i'm going to stand quite a
03:06
bit way to the left here so a good sort of 30 degrees open with my feet and i'm going to swing
03:11
the toe across the ball and i can hit just before the before it and the toe will nip under it and
03:17
hopefully hit it nice and high so let's give that a go so high hands toe down and we're going to work
03:24
across the ball that nice high shot and hopefully up and down so really tough shot made easy by using
03:32
the right club and the right technique
