00:0020 years later, and still no answers in the death of Jonathan Luna.
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the creepiest mysteries of the 21st century.
00:11It is one of our region's longest-running and best-known mysteries,
00:14the disappearance of former Center County District Attorney Ray Gricar.
00:19Number 50, the Pentagon UFO videos.
00:22I recently asked the former director of the Advanced Aerial Threat Identification Program at the Pentagon,
00:29point-blank. Are those the only videos that the government has? He said no.
00:33Those were probably the least compelling videos.
00:36Not to say that aliens haven't always been hot, but the 2010s saw a huge resurgence in UFO popularity.
00:42That is due in large part to the Pentagon videos,
00:45which for many added a strong sense of credibility to the concept of alien spacecraft.
00:49The videos were officially released to the public in 2020 and date back to 2004,
00:54with all being taken by the United States Navy.
00:57In every video, a mysterious object can be seen flying through the sky,
01:01and often defying aerodynamic principles.
01:04All the usual excuses are here.
01:06Drones, misidentified aircraft, camera glitches, you name it.
01:10But at the end of the day, no one truly knows what these are or where they come from.
01:14And by the way, think about every person who thinks they've seen something up in the sky.
01:17These are just the military-confirmed ones.
01:20I don't like it. I'd like to go back just, like, thinking that this isn't real.
01:23Number 49, Jonathan Luna.
01:25And two decades later, no one has been charged, and there are still many lingering questions.
01:31This 38-year-old was working as an attorney when he was found dead on the morning of December 4, 2003.
01:37Luna left his Baltimore office late the prior day and drove all morning to southeast Pennsylvania.
01:42At 5.30 a.m. on the morning of the 4th, his body was found in a Denver creek next to his partially submerged car.
01:49It was soon found that Luna had been stabbed 36 times with his own pocket knife, but the official cause of death was ruled as drowning.
01:56A toll ticket taken from his car was stained with blood, suggesting that he was already bleeding while driving to Denver.
02:02Despite an extensive investigation by the FBI and local authorities, his death remains unsolved, and a criminal investigation is ongoing.
02:10I just think it's odd that this is a federal prosecutor who died under very unusual circumstances, and 20 years later, nobody wants to talk about the case.
02:22Number 48, Ray Rivera.
02:24I kept saying there is something bigger. There is something more going on.
02:29I think he turned over some rock, and he shouldn't have turned it over.
02:33The body of Baltimore writer Ray Rivera was found in a conference room of the city's Belvedere Hotel on May 24, 2006.
02:40A small hole was found in the roof of the hotel's south wing, and under this hole was the conference room in which Rivera's body was ultimately discovered.
02:48People naturally assumed that Rivera had jumped from the main structure, but a number of things did not add up.
02:53For instance, the distance between the hole and the jumping-off point of the main roof was too vast for a man running barefoot.
03:00The police department ruled that Rivera took his own life, but the medical examiner marked the manner of death as undetermined, and many people remain unconvinced of the official explanation.
03:10Immediately, nothing about the evidence at that point felt good to me.
03:16The rooftop, the location of the hole, I didn't believe it. Ray went off that top of the roof.
03:21Number 47. Ursula and Sabina Eriksson
03:24They were trying to cross the Bravo, so as we approached, they didn't, they hadn't seen the smell of it.
03:29The red ones got knocked down by the red car over there. I've got an ambulance en route for it.
03:35She seems alright, but I'm not a doctor.
03:38This strange saga began in May 2008, when the Swedish twins boarded a bus in Liverpool.
03:44However, they were acting erratically, and the driver kicked them off.
03:47The twins began walking along the central reservation of the M6, and when they were confronted, they ran onto the road and were hit by vehicles.
03:55While Ursula was hospitalized, Sabina was taken into custody and held for 24 hours.
04:01Shortly after release, she befriended Glenn Hollenshead, a kind-hearted man who offered her shelter.
04:06The next evening, Sabina stabbed Glenn to death and fled the scene.
04:10She was later captured and spent three years in prison.
04:12The twins' behavior was attributed to a rare psychiatric condition called folie à deux, but this is just a working theory.
04:19Yeah, she's also fighting ambulance crews having to be restrained.
04:23She appears to have a compound fracture to her leg.
04:25They were both hit at a good speed.
04:31Luxury cruising is supposed to be the ultimate getaway, where you leave all your cares behind.
04:36But what's not widely known is that the industry also has a very dubious record of mysterious disappearances.
04:44This Disney Wonder crew member was the first person to go missing on the Disney Cruise Line,
04:49with the incident occurring on March 21, 2011, off the coast of Mexico.
04:53Coriam was last seen on CCTV talking on the phone in the crew area and looked distressed.
04:59When Coriam didn't report for her shift, the crew conducted an extensive search of the ship, but found no trace of her.
05:05Disney suggested Coriam may have been swept overboard by a rogue wave, although no conclusive evidence supports this theory,
05:11and many people have been critical of Disney's poor investigative effort and lack of transparency.
05:16Others speculate that Coriam may have taken her own life, as evidenced by her distressed behavior during the phone call.
05:22Whatever happened to Rebecca on the Disney Wonder remains a mystery.
05:27Whether she slipped and fell, jumped, or was pushed into the ocean wasn't properly investigated,
05:33and the truth may never be known.
05:35Number 45. The Death of Gareth Williams
05:38Known as the spy in the bag case, some of the theories surrounding the death of MI6 agent Gareth Williams
05:44could have come from the pages of an espionage thriller.
05:48This man was a codebreaker for the UK's Government Communications Headquarters,
05:52and at the time of his death, was on secondment to the Secret Intelligence Service.
05:55On August 23, 2010, Williams' body was found inside a sports bag in the bathroom of his London flat.
06:02The bag was padlocked from the outside, and the keys were inside the bag, underneath his body.
06:07There were no signs of forced entry, and no drugs or alcohol were found in his system.
06:12In 2013, the Metropolitan Police concluded that Williams accidentally locked himself in the bag in some kind of kink gone wrong,
06:19despite previous testimony deeming this virtually impossible.
06:22Many others believe that he was the victim of a hit, owing to his secretive work with the government.
06:27Former Lib Dem MP Norman Baker, who had studied the case, said the key question for the Met is why,
06:34when the coroner believed there was foul play, the police decided the opposite,
06:38and are still sticking to the same story.
06:41He added,
06:42Do they think the public are idiots?
06:44Why would anyone believe that?
06:46Number 44, The Killing of Chandra Levy
06:49Her name is Chandra Ann Levy.
06:51She is 24 years old, and hasn't been seen since April 30th.
06:5524-year-old Chandra Levy vanished on May 1st, 2001,
06:58and investigators focused on Congressman Gary Condit,
07:01with whom Levy was allegedly having an affair.
07:04His reluctance to disclose the full nature of his relationship with Levy led to intense speculation and media scrutiny,
07:10and police focused much of their effort on nailing Condit.
07:13He was eventually cleared of involvement, and many people believe that the police wasted valuable time and resources on investigating him.
07:20On May 22nd, 2002, Levy's skeletal remains were found in Washington, D.C.'s Rock Creek Park.
07:26Ingmar Guandique, who was known for attacking women in the area, was convicted of killing Levy,
07:31but this was later overturned and the charges against Guandique were dropped in 2016.
07:36Levy's death remains unsolved.
07:38We still don't know what brought Chandra up to Rock Creek Park that day.
07:43We still are not sure what led to her death, and it's quite possible we may never know exactly what happened.
07:52Number 43.
07:53The Tromp Family Road Trip
07:54Without warning, on August 29th, 2016, the entire Tromp family left their farm and business behind.
08:01They left their phones, credit cards, and passports, fearing they were being tracked or targeted.
08:06Why they thought that remains unclear.
08:09By September 3rd, the family was scattered across Australia, as various family members bailed on the trip at different points.
08:15Mitchell and Ella Tromp returned home to Victoria, Rihanna was found catatonic in a stranger's truck,
08:20Jacoba was retrieved disoriented in Yass, and Mark was located in Wangaratta acting delusional.
08:26After reuniting, the family apologized for the chaos, but never fully explained their actions.
08:31Mark later described it as a, quote,
08:33Build-up of pressure on the family, while experts theorized that they experienced a shared delusion.
08:39Number 42.
08:40The O'Hare Incident
08:41Many UFO sightings occur in rural locations, resulting in a lack of eyewitnesses and lots of skepticism.
09:03But what about right above O'Hare?
09:05At approximately 4.15 p.m., several airport employees, including pilots and mechanics,
09:11reported seeing a metallic saucer-shaped object hovering in the sky above the airport.
09:16After about five minutes, the object reportedly shot straight up at an extreme speed,
09:21leaving behind a clear round hole in the cloud cover.
09:24This hole remained visible for several minutes before closing up.
09:27After initially refusing to investigate, the FAA later said that this was a weather phenomenon
09:32known as a hole-punch cloud.
09:34However, the weather conditions on that day would not have caused such a phenomenon,
09:38leaving many skeptical of the official response.
09:41Some of our employees, I don't know if you heard anything about this, but...
09:44Number 41.
09:45Kathleen Peterson
09:46What's wrong?
09:47My wife had an accident.
09:48She's still breathing.
09:49What kind of accident?
09:50She's out on the stairs.
09:51She's still breathing.
09:52Please come.
09:52Is she conscious?
09:53What?
09:54Is she conscious?
09:55No, she's not conscious.
09:56The death of Kathleen Peterson has been widely circulated throughout the years,
10:00appearing in the form of podcasts, scripted dramas, and perhaps most famously,
10:04the documentary, The Staircase.
10:06Peterson was found at the bottom of a staircase by her husband, Michael,
10:10who called 911 and said that she had fallen.
10:12However, authorities quickly became suspicious of Michael's story,
10:16especially due to the amount of blood at the scene and the nature of Kathleen's injuries.
10:20Michael was eventually convicted of murdering Kathleen,
10:22but this conviction was later overturned,
10:24and he was released on an Alford plea in 2017.
10:28Despite years of legal proceedings and media attention,
10:31the exact circumstances of Kathleen Peterson's death remain a mystery,
10:35and the case continues to attract theories.
10:38The judge agreed with Peterson's attorneys,
10:40releasing him from house arrest, doing away with the ankle monitor.
10:43He ordered the 70-year-old to stay away from his late wife's family.
10:47Peterson's attorney said the decision was a long time coming.
10:50Number 40.
10:51Robert William Fisher
10:53On April 10, 2001, the house belonging to Robert William Fisher exploded,
11:04and the bodies of his wife and two children were found inside.
11:07Fisher himself was nowhere to be found.
11:09Following an investigation, it was discovered that the house had been intentionally demolished,
11:14and that Fisher's family had been murdered prior to the explosion.
11:17Naturally, suspicion immediately fell on Fisher himself, who was still missing.
11:22Ten days after the murders, on April 20, the car belonging to Fisher's wife was found in a forest near Yonge, Arizona,
11:29about 130 miles northeast of the Fisher home.
11:32It's believed that Fisher murdered his family, dumped the car, and fled on foot,
11:36and his whereabouts remain unknown.
11:38It's hard to think that he's still alive, but we have to look at this and say, he's out there.
11:44Number 39.
11:46Ray Gricar
11:46Now, nearly a decade later, the debate over what happened to Gricar continues with questions and not many answers.
11:53A missing lawyer, Ray Gricar served as the district attorney of Center County, Pennsylvania,
11:58serving for 20 years between 1985 and 2005.
12:02Unfortunately, he disappeared on April 15th of that year after going for a drive.
12:07His Mini Cooper was found abandoned in a parking lot in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania,
12:11but Gricar himself was nowhere to be found.
12:14His laptop and its hard drive were later found in the nearby Susquehanna River,
12:18but in different locations, suggesting the hard drive had been removed.
12:22Making the story even stranger, a search of Gricar's home computer revealed searches like how to wreck a hard drive,
12:27raising the potential of a planned disappearance.
12:30Unfortunately, Gricar's body has never been found, and no one knows what happened to him.
12:34And keep in mind, this is still a missing person's case, not a criminal investigation.
12:39But early on, even from the start, there were questions about was the investigation mishandled,
12:43that there were some missteps in those early hours when Ray Gricar went missing in 2005.
12:48Number 38.
12:49The Iguala Mass Kidnapping
12:50On September 26th, 2014, 43 men were abducted in Iguala, Mexico, following an intense shootout.
13:05All 43 were students at the Ayochinapa Rural Teachers College,
13:09and they were taken by allegedly crooked police officers.
13:12Unfortunately, mass corruption in Mexico has resulted in a ton of unanswered questions.
13:17The Mexican army and federal officials have been uncooperative,
13:21and investigations into the kidnapping have been continuously hampered.
13:24Several local officials and gang members have been arrested,
13:27but no one has been convicted, and no single person or body has been found responsible.
13:32As of 2024, the remains of three of the men have been found and identified,
13:37but no one knows what happened to the other 40, or even why they were taken.
13:41No matter where the missing might be, we, the parents, are not going to stop until justice is done,
13:49Felipe de la Cruz said.
13:50Number 37.
13:51Kyle Fleischman
13:52Anything that anybody, any information that anybody has,
13:55or that they have heard, you know, overheard from someone else talking about it,
14:01you know, please, we do ask them, please come forward.
14:04This 24-year-old was a recent graduate of North Carolina's Elon University
14:08when he disappeared on November 9, 2007.
14:11Fleischman was drinking with some friends after attending a comedy show
14:14and left the bar around 2 a.m., suspiciously leaving behind his coat and bank card.
14:18Between 2.30 and 3.30, Fleischman made various calls to his roommate,
14:22sister, father, and even his own voicemail.
14:25However, none of these calls were answered,
14:27raising suspicions about a potential panic or desperation.
14:30Unfortunately, answers were never provided, as Fleischman did not return home.
14:34His phone last pinged near North Davidson Street in Charlotte,
14:37and despite extensive search efforts,
14:39no significant evidence has surfaced regarding his whereabouts.
14:43Well, Kyle's father tells us he hasn't heard from CMPD since 2013,
14:47and he still has several questions about his son's case.
14:50Number 36.
14:51The Killing of Missy Beavers
14:53Five years ago, a North Texas fitness instructor was killed
14:56as she was preparing to teach a class in a North Texas church.
14:59Midlothian police, as of tonight, have not caught her killer,
15:02but they're not giving up hope.
15:03Around 5 a.m. on the morning of April 18, 2016,
15:07a woman arrived at the Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian, Texas to attend a fitness class.
15:12Instead, she found the bloody body of her instructor, 45-year-old Missy Beavers.
15:17Beavers had been murdered by a blunt force weapon, with a hammer being found near her body.
15:22The case received national attention when surveillance footage was released showing an
15:25unknown individual dressed in full tactical gear wandering the halls of the church.
15:29The suspect was seen casually strolling the halls while methodically opening doors and
15:34breaking glass with a handheld weapon.
15:36It's believed that this person is Beavers' murderer,
15:39but no arrests have been made and the suspect has not been identified.
15:42We've all watched those horror movies where you say,
15:47you gotta get out of that house, and, you know, and this was the real thing.
15:53Number 35.
15:54Timothy Pitson
15:55We are not done. I am not done until I can see Tim standing in front of his dad.
16:02And then I'll feel complete, like, the circle is closed.
16:07This 6-year-old disappeared on May 11, 2011, after his mother, Amy Fry Pitson, took him out of school.
16:14For the next few days, the Pitsons embarked on a family road trip,
16:18traveling to various resorts and amusement parks throughout Illinois and Wisconsin.
16:21On May 14, Amy was found dead in an Illinois motel room, having taken her own life.
16:27She left behind a mysterious note, claiming that Timothy was, quote,
16:30safe, but would, quote, never be found.
16:33The note also stated that he was with people who cared for him,
16:36but these people have never been identified.
16:38And indeed, young Timothy has never been found,
16:41although many people believe that Amy killed him given her mental health and the cryptic wording of her note.
16:46You will never see him again. Had Amy really found someone willing to secretly adopt her son,
16:53or had she done something to Timothy she didn't want people to know about?
16:57Number 34. Maura Murray
16:59I cannot believe that it's been this long, but at the same time, it feels like it was just yesterday.
17:07Described as, quote,
17:08The case of Maura Murray has baffled true crime enthusiasts and amateur sleuths for decades.
17:15The nursing student was exhibiting strange behavior before her disappearance,
17:19and told her professors that she was taking a week off for a family death.
17:23However, Murray's family has denied any deaths or emergencies.
17:26At around 7.30 p.m. on February 9, 2004,
17:30Murray crashed her car on New Hampshire's Route 112 and fled the scene with her phone and wallet.
17:35Also missing was some liquor that Murray purchased earlier in the day.
17:38Neither she nor her belongings have ever been found,
17:41and no one knows where she was going or why she fled school in such a frenzied state.
17:46Last summer, a large-scale grid search was conducted under the helm of a new lead investigator.
17:52The latest push by Maura's family is a billboard campaign,
17:56and the family says it's already generating new leads.
17:59Number 33. Chris Kramers and Lissana Fron
18:02Before the break, I told you the story about two Dutch women who went missing in Panama in 2014.
18:07Their disappearance revealed more than 50 cases of missing women and girls in the area.
18:11These Dutch tourists disappeared in April 2014 while hiking in Panama.
18:16Concern grew when Kramers and Fron missed a scheduled tour the following day,
18:20and an extensive search for the women was launched.
18:22Fron's backpack was found 10 weeks later holding various belongings, including both of their phones.
18:27These phones provided unsettling evidence, like numerous emergency calls that failed to connect,
18:33and dozens of dark photos that had been taken during the night.
18:36Unfortunately, the women's remains were later found along the same riverbank,
18:40confirming that they had indeed perished.
18:42However, multiple questions still remain, like what exactly happened to them,
18:46and why they were taking pictures in the middle of the night.
18:49When I heard about the story, I just couldn't turn away.
18:52First of all, it's the classic tale of a young girl gets lost in the woods,
18:56and the rumor mill was saying everything from they were eaten by wild animals to both of them fell off a cliff.
19:03Number 32. Brian Schaefer
19:05After the women leave, Brian is seen re-entering the bar just before 2 a.m.
19:10We've seen Brian go back off the camera, and we're unable to locate him leaving the building.
19:15On March 31, 2006, medical student Brian Schaefer went out with some buddies to celebrate spring break.
19:21Around 2 a.m., Schaefer was seen on camera talking to two women outside the bar.
19:26He then appeared to re-enter the establishment, but was never seen again.
19:30The case attracted significant attention,
19:32mostly due to the bizarre mystery of Schaefer seemingly never leaving the bar.
19:36He did not exit from the main entrance, and while the bar did have a back door,
19:40it led to a busy construction site at the time.
19:42Some believe that Schaefer may have been intoxicated, left through the back door,
19:47and stumbled to his death in the site, but no body, remains, or belongings were ever found.
19:52I always get the question asked, you know, what do I think happened?
19:57Is Brian alive? Is he still out there?
20:00My answer to that is, there's nothing to indicate that he's not out there.
20:06Number 31. The Anthrax Attacks
20:08Five years after the attack, Amerithrax investigators are nowhere near an arrest.
20:15I wouldn't say stuck. What I would say is, it just meant there would be a lot of long days
20:20trying to get through all the potential subjects.
20:23The 21st century did not get off to a good start.
20:26Just one week after 9-11, letters containing anthrax spores were sent through the U.S. postal system,
20:32killing five people and infecting a further 17.
20:35The FBI launched a massive investigation named Amerithrax,
20:39leading them to a microbiologist named Bruce Ivins.
20:42However, Ivins took his own life after learning that he was a suspect,
20:45effectively bringing an end to the story.
20:48If Ivins was responsible, we still don't know what his motive was,
20:51although some believe he was trying to get funding for anthrax vaccine research.
20:55However, many are not convinced of his guilt, including the National Academy of Sciences,
21:00which criticized the FBI's investigation and result.
21:03We'll likely never know the full truth.
21:05But if Ivins mailed the letters, what possibly could be the motive?
21:09Why terrorize the country?
21:11Number 30. The Mysterious Shrieks of Forest Grove
21:15Forest Grove, Oregon is a sleepy 30 minutes west of Portland.
21:19This small northwestern town made a splash in 2016
21:22when residents reported hearing a shrill supernatural shriek.
21:26Nobody was able to pinpoint the source of the eerie, shrill noise.
21:33The shrieks seemed to permeate the air, coming from anywhere and everywhere all at once.
21:38It's hard to identify what angle it's coming from because it just kind of encompasses the area.
21:44Some said it sounded like a ghostly train, but there are no tracks near Forest Grove.
21:49The mechanical screeches ceased as abruptly as they began a few weeks later.
21:54To this day, no one has come up with a reasonable explanation.
21:58Number 29. Kyron Horman's Disappearance
22:01Missing but not forgotten.
22:03I pray to God every single day that Kyron comes through that door.
22:07The disappearance of young Kyron Horman from Skyline Elementary in 2010 sparked the largest investigation in Oregon's history.
22:14Kyron's stepmother Terry said she attended the school science fair with him, then left as he walked to his class.
22:20Something happened to Kyron, because he never made it to class.
22:24The case attracted national attention, and the FBI rolled into town to head the search.
22:281,300 people hailing from all three West Coast states searched for Kyron, but never found a trace of his whereabouts.
22:36When police questioned Terry, she failed two polygraphs and appeared to be wrapped up in a murder-for-hire plot against her husband.
22:42Despite that, she was never connected to the disappearance, and the investigation remains open.
22:48His mom drives up to the Portland area at least once a year, if not more, to work with law enforcement to keep this case active and to bring him home.
22:56Number 28. Medieval Porpoise Grave
22:58Quite a nice flat base put on the pit. Certainly some effort was made, was taken to sort of cut it out nicely.
23:08In 2017, British archaeologists were excavating a medieval site on Chappelle-Dame-Huay, a tiny channel island in the English Channel off the French coast.
23:17Amid the 600-year-old ruins, the researchers discovered a small grave.
23:22When they dug up the grave, they were shocked to find the centuries-old remains of a porpoise.
23:27Theories about why these medieval islanders buried a porpoise abound.
23:31Were they preserving porpoise meat by burying it? Were they showing respect to an animal? Did they think it was a mermaid?
23:37Without a time machine, the purpose of this porpoise grave will forever remain a mystery.
23:43Number 27. The Murder of He-Min Lee
23:46In 1999, He-Min Lee was a high school student in Baltimore, Maryland.
23:51She went missing in January, and her body was discovered a month later.
23:55Investigators say her body was partially buried approximately 100 yards off the roadway.
24:00Police are investigating this case as a homicide.
24:03The subsequent arrest, trial, and sentencing of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed were the subject of the hit true crime podcast serial.
24:10Syed's petition for a new trial was ultimately denied by the Supreme Court in 2019.
24:16But thanks to the podcast, which criticized the evidence and investigation, the case was reopened.
24:21The DA moved to vacate the conviction, acknowledging the violation of Syed's civil rights.
24:27Prosecutors in his 1999 trial failed to turn over evidence that could have helped his case.
24:33In 2023, the verdict was vacated, and then reinstated.
24:38To this day, serial and true crime fans believe that He-Min Lee's killer is still out there, free.
24:45Number 26. Shark Brain-Eating Parasite
24:48Spring of 2017 was a rough time for fish in the San Francisco Bay.
24:53Between February and July, hundreds of dead fish washed up onto the shore.
24:57One senior fish pathologist, which really is a thing, estimated that around 1,000 leopard sharks and hundreds of bat rays died.
25:05Along with them were hundreds of other fish and sharks.
25:07It baffled scientists for months, until a researcher discovered brain lesions in a dead shark.
25:13Scientists delved further and discovered evidence of a fairly common fish-killing brain parasite.
25:18With that mystery solved, one remained.
25:21How did parasites native to the Sea of Japan jump to species in San Francisco?
25:26While there are many theories, there are no answers.
25:29Number 25. Who hijacked the signal?
25:33Comcast cable TV customers in southern Arizona are still reeling about this.
25:38During the late 2000s, Comcast was the victim of several hijacked cable signals.
25:43In 2007, an unknown signal thief hacked into the Disney Channel feed.
25:48Perhaps inspired by Fight Club, he spliced adult-oriented footage into a children's show for some viewers in New Jersey.
25:54Nobody knows that they saw it, but they did.
26:03A similar incident occurred in Arizona two years later.
26:06During NBC's broadcast of Super Bowl XLIII, 30 seconds of adult-oriented footage interrupted the Cardinals and the Steelers.
26:13In that instance, the FBI found the culprit, a disgruntled Cox Cable employee.
26:18The perpetrator of the Disney Channel incident, however, was never found.
26:21Number 24. Twin Twisters
26:24During this era of extreme weather induced by climate change, twin tornadoes are not especially remarkable.
26:31Some powerful systems can even generate three or four funnels at a time.
26:35Normally, the funnels are different in both size and strength.
26:39The two tornadoes that destroyed the town of Pilger, Nebraska in 2014, however, were unique.
26:44So this is incredible. You could see even in the forefront, the whole thunderstorm rotating, as we call a supercell.
26:51First, they were almost identical in size and strength. One measured at an EF3 and the other an EF4.
26:58Even more strange, both tornadoes rotated in the same direction, which almost never happens with multiple tornadoes.
27:05While similar events do happen, they are exceedingly rare.
27:09This has been a historic outbreak, guys. There's been numerous violent tornadoes rotating around each other.
27:14This is going to be one that's probably going to be studied by scientists for many, many years to come.
27:19Number 23. Raining Bird Corpses
27:22A very bizarre story in southern New Mexico. Birds are dropping dead. Researchers say it's not normal.
27:29In the middle of the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020, citizens of New Mexico could be forgiven for thinking that the world was about to end.
27:36In addition to the plague of the coronavirus, thousands of migrating birds began to fall from the sky.
27:42Dead. Hundreds of golden warblers, iridescent swallows, pale flycatchers, and others were found dead all over the state.
27:49Many were emaciated and appeared to have died from starvation and hypothermia.
27:54Some scientists think the smoke from California's wildfires forced the birds to adjust their migration patterns.
27:59Others think the changes were caused by droughts.
28:02Either way, it seems as if climate change was the culprit, a dark sign for the future of biodiversity on the planet.
28:09Some of these populations are already struggling, and to add something like this to it is devastating.
28:14Number 22. The Disappearance of Lars Mittank
28:17The story of Lars Mittank, a German tourist in Bulgaria, is truly bizarre.
28:22On vacation in Varna, Mittank and friends were enjoying life at a beach resort.
28:26There, Mittank was involved in a bar fight with fellow German soccer fans.
28:30During the fight, he ruptured an eardrum and hurt his jaw.
28:34The injuries delayed his return home with his friends.
28:37The next day, he became paranoid.
28:39Mittank called his mom, claiming that men were out to rob or murder him.
28:43CCTV footage showed him agitated, pacing the hotel halls.
28:47At the airport the next day, Mittank was cleared to fly by a doctor, but was visibly agitated.
28:53Claiming to fear for his life, the tourist abandoned his luggage, ran into the forest, and vanished forever.
29:00Number 21. Void in the Pyramid of Khufu
29:03The pyramids of Giza were built over 4,000 years ago, but are still making us ask all sorts of questions.
29:10The ScanPyramids project was launched in 2015 to hopefully answer some of these,
29:15aiming to investigate the pyramids' internal structures using imaging techniques that won't damage the monuments.
29:20But, two years on, an enormous void set to be the size of an airplane was found within the largest pyramid of Khufu.
29:27Theories about the void range from it being a way for the pyramid builders to keep the tunnels from collapsing,
29:32to it containing an undiscovered archaeological gold mine.
29:35At the moment, we have no way to go into the void and find out the truth.
29:39Number 20. The Sony Hack
29:41Tonight, federal authorities say the hackers taking aim at a Hollywood giant are doing this for North Korea.
29:47It's hard to imagine Seth Rogen at the heart of an international incident, but that's exactly what happened in the 2014 Sony hack.
29:54In December, Sony discovered that a hacker collective called the Guardians of Peace had infiltrated their systems,
29:59leaking tons of confidential data.
30:02In the wake of the hack, the collective threatened a terrorist attack at the New York premiere of the upcoming comedy The Interview.
30:08If they could do this to Sony, who's next on the list?
30:10It was well known at the time that North Korea was enraged by the film's portrayal of Kim Jong-un.
30:16North Korean hacker Park Jin-hyuk was eventually charged by the DOJ, and North Korea was sanctioned.
30:22Still, many people, including Rogen, doubt the rogue nation's involvement.
30:26Some think it was an inside job by angry ex-employees.
30:31Number 19. Siberian Sinkholes
30:33In July 2014, helicopters flying over the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia discovered a vast crater in the wilderness,
30:41thought to be a recently formed sinkhole.
30:44Later the same month, reindeer herders found more of these enormous sinkholes,
30:48one also in the Yamal Peninsula and another to the east.
30:51A huge sinkhole on the other side of the country, in the Chirsky Range,
30:55has been dubbed the doorway to the underworld thanks to booms heard inside.
30:59It's thought that the sinkholes form when permafrost melts due to rapid global warming.
31:05Some theories link this process to explosions of underground natural gas reserves.
31:09Whatever the cause of the strange sinkholes is, it's definitely not good.
31:13If such craters will take place in the industrial region, it could be a quite serious disaster.
31:24Number 18. What did Brandon Swanson see?
31:27In the early hours of May 14, 2008, Brandon Swanson, a college student from Minnesota,
31:33drove his car into a ditch on his way home from a party.
31:36The car wouldn't start, so he did what anyone would do and called his parents, who drove out to get him.
31:41Brandon stayed on the phone for over 45 minutes, but his parents were unable to find him.
31:46At 2.30 a.m., Brandon swore and the call cut off.
31:49The minute that he, that that call dropped, I just became sick.
31:56I knew it was wrong.
31:57I knew it was very, very bad.
32:00The following day, his car was found, located 25 miles further away from where he thought he was.
32:06The most common theory is that Brandon fell into a nearby river and drowned, but his body has never been found.
32:11Number 17. Head in Pennsylvania
32:14While walking home in 2014, a teenage boy in Economy, Pennsylvania, stumbled across a grisly artifact in the woods.
32:22A woman's head.
32:24Bizarrely, the head was embalmed, meaning someone had gone to great lengths to look after it.
32:28So why they would dump it in the woods is anyone's guess.
32:32Though sketches and a 3D model have been released to the public, nobody's been able to identify the head,
32:37and the body it belongs to has also never been found.
32:39No hospital or morgue had a headless cadaver that matched.
32:43Strangest of all was the fact that the eyes were replaced with bouncy balls,
32:47which could suggest it was involved in the black market organ trade.
32:51Number 16. Whose heart was this?
32:54Paramedics in Norwalk, Ohio, were parked outside a convenience store on August 25, 2016, waiting for calls.
33:01Instead, they found a human heart.
33:03The heart was in a sealed Ziploc bag in a field near the parking lot.
33:06It was determined that the heart was human and had been freshly removed,
33:11dropped in the field very close to the time the EMTs discovered it.
33:14It's thought that the heart was an organ being sold on the black market,
33:17but the owner or potential recipient, not to mention whoever left it there, have never been found.
33:22Number 15. Octopuses on Land.
33:26One dark night in October 2017, a tour group in Ceredigion, Wales, came across an unusual sight.
33:32Octopuses can survive out of the water for about a half an hour,
33:40but it's extremely unusual for dozens to flee the sea at the same time.
33:44By the following morning, many had died on the shores, failing to return to the ocean at all.
33:50This behavior continued for several nights.
33:52Explanations have varied, ranging from them getting shaken up by recent storms in the area
33:57or confused by the bright lights of the harbor.
34:00Number 14. Havana Syndrome.
34:02In 2016, American and Canadian embassy staff in Cuba began to report unusual health problems
34:09after hearing a loud noise, described by some to sound like marbles rolling across a floor.
34:14It went on for about 20 or 30 seconds, and then as it was dying, it went...
34:19And when it hit the low note, I thought I was going to throw up.
34:25The sufferers became dizzy and nauseous, reporting headaches and, quote, pressure.
34:30Injuries eventually determined to be, quote, concussions without the concussion.
34:34The U.S. authorities blamed the Cuban government for carrying out the alleged, quote, attacks,
34:38which Cuba denied.
34:40In 2018, U.S. diplomats in China made similar reports.
34:44Theories have ranged from cricket noises and psychogenic illness
34:47to pesticides and microwave weapons, but so far, there's no conclusive answer.
34:52We heard a very high-pitched sound in Catherine's bedroom,
34:56and we heard a very low-pulsing sound in the living room.
35:00Number 13. Arkansas Bird Deaths.
35:02On New Year's Day 2011, the small town of Beebe, Arkansas,
35:06was shaken by the ominous mass deaths of up to 5,000 blackbirds.
35:11You could not even get down the road without running over hundreds.
35:15It was that bad.
35:16It was thought that the birds died after flying into buildings and obstacles
35:19when they were startled by fireworks,
35:21so the following year, fireworks were banned in Beebe.
35:24Except even with these restrictions,
35:26an additional 200 birds died after flying into buildings on the same night.
35:29Some believe that the 2012 deaths were the result of someone
35:32setting off fireworks and a roost of birds maliciously.
35:35But if this is the case, the culprit was never caught.
35:39Number 12. Who was the Atlantic City serial killer?
35:42Also known as the Eastbound Strangler, this killer murdered four women,
35:46all identified as sex workers, in October and November 2006.
35:50The bodies were left lined up in a row facing eastward in a ditch behind a motel,
35:54fully clothed except for their shoes and socks, all strangled to death.
35:59A few suspects have been questioned by police with no charges or convictions.
36:03At one point, police investigated a possible connection to the Long Island serial killer,
36:07but to no avail. Though the theory that the killers are the same person remains popular.
36:13Number 11. The Watcher
36:14This home is at the center of a spine-tingling mystery.
36:18Derek and Maria Broadus were a happy couple,
36:20planning to move their three young kids into their New Jersey dream house.
36:24A few days after closing in the summer of 2014, they received a strange letter.
36:29It was signed by someone calling themselves The Watcher,
36:32who claimed to have been watching the house for years.
36:34They knew the house had been sold, and to whom, even though it was never listed.
36:39Two more letters followed, dark and threatening.
36:42You're moving into your dream home and you start getting these threatening letters
36:46from someone saying they're watching you and then asking for young blood.
36:50I think that's very scary.
36:51The Watcher somehow knew the names of all the Broadus' children.
36:55No further letters followed, but the family was too scared to ever move in.
36:59They sold the house at a loss a few years later.
37:02The Watcher's identity was never discovered.
37:05Number 10. Elisa Lam
37:07On January 31st, Canadian tourist Elisa Lam, who'd been staying at the Cecil Hotel in L.A.,
37:13failed to check in with her parents.
37:15Nearly three weeks later, her body was found in the water tank on the roof.
37:19An autopsy showed that she'd drowned.
37:22It was never discovered how she managed to get to the roof and into the water tank,
37:26then closed the door behind her.
37:27But, strangest of all, was highly disturbing security footage that was released before
37:32her body was found.
37:33The footage has no sound, but shows Elisa visibly distressed.
37:37Though she was bipolar, many argue that this does not explain her extreme behavior,
37:42and point out that the hotel has a sordid history and reputation for violence.
37:48Number 9.
37:48The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
37:50On May 3rd, 2007, four-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from her bedroom during
37:56a family vacation in Portugal, never to be seen again.
37:59It became one of the most heavily publicized events in British media,
38:03gaining international attention as the search for Maddie intensified.
38:07The most common theory is that somebody abducted her from the holiday apartment while her parents
38:11were at a nearby restaurant.
38:13However, British tabloids and Twitter users targeted her parents.
38:16Express Newspapers was later forced to pay damages and apologize.
38:21And ultimately, no one has ever been charged, and a body has never been found.
38:26Number 8.
38:27Henry McCabe's Last Voicemail
38:28Before his death in September 2015,
38:32Henry McCabe spent Labor Day weekend drinking with a friend, William Kennedy.
38:35But, McCabe never came home.
38:38Instead, police found his body in Rush Lake, Minnesota two months later.
38:41Before he died, however, he left a disturbing voice message on his wife's phone,
38:46in which he said he'd been shot.
38:48A second voice and unusual growling can also be heard.
38:52Yet, McCabe's body didn't have a gunshot wound.
38:55It was officially ruled that he drowned.
38:57To date, nobody knows whether his death was accidental or if he was murdered.
39:02Number 7.
39:03Stockholm Submarines
39:05In 2011, 2014, and again in 2018,
39:10mysterious submarines were sighted in the Stockholm archipelago by the Swedish military.
39:14This happened several times during the Cold War,
39:16with Russian submarines wandering into Swedish waters.
39:19But while the more recent submarine sightings have also been blamed on Russia,
39:23nobody is sure what they were doing there.
39:25It could be divers using some form of moped-like underwater vehicle,
39:28and it could be divers that don't have any business on our territory.
39:32In 2014, a search was launched,
39:35and a photograph of the alleged submarine distributed to the public.
39:38But the sub itself was never identified or claimed.
39:41Stranger still, however,
39:43it's also been speculated that the sub sighted belonged to NATO.
39:47Looking very much like a submarine on patrol.
39:52Does it look like a submarine on patrol?
39:54Because that could equally be a whale with a toupee.
39:58Number 6.
39:59The Salish Sea Feet
40:00Since 2007, 21 human feet have been found on beaches in the Pacific Northwest and West Coast of Canada,
40:08washed up from the Salish Sea.
40:09It's actually not unheard of for a body part to end up on a beach like this,
40:13and the feet become disembodied due to ordinary decomposition.
40:17But so many detached feet washing up on the same stretch of coast is a statistical anomaly to say the least.
40:23While some of the feet have been identified as belonging to people who took their own lives by jumping from bridges,
40:30many of them have not.
40:31Running shoes since 2007, they've been using an extra light foam or air pockets within the running shoes,
40:38and that's why these running shoes actually float up to the top.
40:41Number 5.
40:41Radio Bursts From Deep Space
40:43Beginning in 2007, fast radio bursts, or FRBs, coming from deep space have reached Earth's telescopes.
40:50It was eventually determined that the FRBs are likely coming from a dwarf galaxy 3 billion light-years away.
40:56But as for what's causing them in the first place, nobody is entirely sure.
41:01Some explanations for the true FRB source include an active black hole throwing out light-speed particles,
41:05or a collision of two enormous neutron stars.
41:09However, some have wondered whether the bursts are alien communications.
41:13Of course, even if this were true, the signals would have been sent at least 3 billion years ago.
41:18So the senders may not exist anymore.
41:20The leading theory is they're big, powerful magnetic stars.
41:23Number 4.
41:24The West Mesa Tragedies
41:25In 2009, a dog walker stumbled across a human bone on the West Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
41:31In the weeks that followed, police uncovered the bodies of 11 women,
41:35nearly all of them known sex workers, killed between 2001 and 2005 and buried in shallow graves.
41:42The bodies were so decomposed that a cause of death has never been determined.
41:46I know who killed her, and I know who did it.
41:49And I know why.
41:50The killer has since been dubbed the West Mesa Bone Collector.
41:54And though at the time it was one of the most notorious crimes in the state's history,
41:58police had very few leads.
42:00As a result, nobody has ever been charged with the murders.
42:03And the investigation continues.
42:04As Gonzales prays for the other families, she also has a message for her sister.
42:10I'm sorry.
42:12All the information's on the back.
42:13I love you.
42:15Number 3.
42:15The Jameson Family
42:17Bobby, Sherilyn, and their young daughter Madison were a seemingly ordinary family living in Oklahoma.
42:22But in late 2008, they disappeared.
42:25Their car was found in a remote wood, abandoned and full of their most important possessions,
42:29including their wallets, phones, cash, and dog.
42:34A search of the surrounding area found nothing.
42:36Then, four years on, the bodies of all three Jamesons were discovered just three miles from where the truck had been dumped.
42:43A cause of death was never determined.
42:45While some think the family was murdered by Bobby's father or drug dealers,
42:49others believe there was a more supernatural cause.
42:51As the Jamesons believed, their house was haunted before they left.
42:55Number 2.
42:56Japanese Ghost Boats
42:57The arrival of North Korean ghost ships in Japan is actually a common occurrence.
43:02However, in 2019, one of these boats housed an especially gruesome discovery.
43:13Five corpses and two heads that may or may not have belonged to any of the bodies.
43:18It's generally thought that these boats come from North Korea and belong to either fishermen or defectors,
43:23although the former is considered much more likely.
43:25In 2017, a ship with its crew still alive was also found on the coast of Japan,
43:38and they explained that their ship had broken down before returning to the DPRK.

43:59Number 1.
43:59Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
44:01The Malaysia Airlines flight with 239 people on board, including four Americans, has gone missing.
44:09On the fateful day of March 8, 2014,
44:12Flight 370 flying from Kuala Lumpur disappeared over the Indian Ocean.
44:16What ensued was the most exhaustive search effort in the history of aviation,
44:21and it was all to no avail.
44:23The plane's wreckage or approximate position have never been found,
44:27and all 239 people on board are presumed dead.
44:31This is very rare.
44:32For an airplane to disappear is not normal.
44:35I think we have, at this hour, every reason to expect that this is not going to be a good outcome.
44:40The only clue we have to the plane's whereabouts are pieces of debris that washed up on shore in the following years.
44:46Theories on why the plane went down range from a tragic fire to a hijacking,
44:50with some even suggesting the plane was pulled into a black hole.
