EMOTIONAL PENULTIMATE RACE 😮_💨 Men's Tour de France Stage 20 Race Highlights TNT Sports Cycling - TNT Sports Cycling
Transcript
00:01With no high mountains on the penultimate day of this Tour de France, you'd be forgiven for thinking that this might be something of a parade day.
00:10Well, think again. 14 teams yet to get a stage win out of this great race, and their determination to be part of a breakaway magnified the importance of this penultimate day.
00:21Factor into that, 2,914 metres of altitude gain. The lumps were constant and would take bits out of many ambitions.
00:31The green jersey just about wrapped up. Polka dots likewise would fall onto the shoulders of Telepogaccia.
00:38All he had to do was finish the day. But a job to be finished by those teams that wanted to make this a breakaway day, and the terrain really played into their ambitions.
00:48Not the shortest distance either. 184 kilometres in total. Destination Pontarier.
00:57But those peaks, some of which had ramps within them of up to 12%. This was going to hurt.
01:05Climbs are only as big as the effort you put into taking them. Attack them and they'll feel like alpine tests.
01:13And when you looked at the parkour, you could see just how bitey it was.
01:20Christian Godom waved the flag on a day that traditionally we find and fate our champions.
01:28And a champion's performance by Kasper Askreen. He was first to take the bait, almost acting, if you will, as an encouragement for those behind.
01:37And then the rain came down. This was causing something of a moderation, perhaps, of ambition.
01:42And it took a while for us finally to get the last incarnation of a break that looked solid enough to make it all the way home.
01:49There were a few rolls of the dice and there were some who would start clipping at the top ten as well that found themselves up front.
01:57But not before it had finally settled with Tim Valens making a noise.
02:03Of course, a big engine room for him. Good for UETM Emirates to have him up the road.
02:07Mathieu Jorgensen also there for Visma Lisa bike.
02:10Likewise costume. And as you can see, the fracturing of the chase behind was now starting to make this all the more selective.
02:19Groups all over the place. The yellow jersey group at this point, with 120 to go, only at 24 seconds.
02:26Danny Bocaccia did not want this to be a battle for the GC on the day.
02:31Just let the break go, for goodness sake.
02:34They were all on the radio, mustering themselves for what was still to come.
02:38So the gap to Danny Bocaccia and the other jerseys started to stretch out.
02:44Tim Valens was on the back of this group, on the front of the yellow jersey group.
02:48At this point was Mauro Schmidt, who had been up front but had taken a tumble and suddenly went in to be part of the engine room.
02:55Of just making sure nothing silly happened.
02:58Well, by the time they took the turn onto the most testy climb of the day.
03:02The calorie two test of the Tessie.
03:05Then Jégat, who had been harried to get out of the break by plenty of teams who didn't want him there.
03:11Didn't want the threats to the top ten. Would he make it in there? And who would make it out?
03:16Big, big drive it was up front. Jégat there and asking for a little bit of assistance, Harry Sweeney.
03:24Caden Groves proving that as a fast man he climbs incredibly well was part of a still very optimistic group that were in the chase.
03:32But with 60 kilometres to go, the gap was opening up, of course, to the peloton.
03:36It was over four minutes and the kilometres were going down.
03:40Come and do some work, said Sweeney, trying to get Jégat to join the fun.
03:45Jégat preparing to launch himself into the top ten.
03:50Meanwhile, Sweeney decided, well, if nobody wants to help me, I'll help myself.
03:54And away up the road, he went. Brilliant.
03:59Well, that was the fracturing of that coveted front group.
04:02They were all kind of looking at each other, wondering where the threat would come from.
04:06And ultimately, Frank van den Broek looked nice and handy.
04:11Found himself in the company of some quicker men up front.
04:14Why? Because Caden Groves bridged over to Harry Sweeney and decided to make a big push for the line.
04:22Well, also within that group was the Spanish champion.
04:26Romeo was one of those that would unfortunately take a bit of a tumble on the day.
04:31They were reconfiguring themselves out front, but still had a margin.
04:35And then it was about the push on to the line.
04:38Surely it couldn't stay together as a full group.
04:41That was Romeo hitting hard.
04:44There were others as well as part of that group, I'm afraid, that found themselves on the deck.
04:48Groves van den Broek and Jake Stewart were up front.
04:52Now then, with a trio looking likely to carry once they'd found Harry Sweeney out there.
04:59But then this moment, a crucial one, I think it's fair to say.
05:03Jake Stewart asking for help.
05:05Meanwhile, Caden Groves helped himself.
05:0813 seconds turned to 28.
05:11Still, it seemed that Gégat might indeed have something in terms of options for the top ten.
05:18Caden Groves was looking for a stage win.
05:20He's had them before, of course, multiple times in La Vuelta.
05:24Also on a couple of occasions in the Giro d'Italia.
05:27But he was on the hunt for a Tour de France stage.
05:30Could he, would he, get there?
05:33Well, they were forming into smaller groups behind.
05:38But really, one man was on an absolute mission.
05:42And Caden Groves was going to bring this in.
05:45The emotions started to wash over the Australian.
05:48This was absolutely huge.
05:51For a sprinter to finish solo, it's a rare thing indeed.
05:57Vandenbroek in second blaze ahead of Pascal Inkhorn.
06:00Who'd come out of the front group.
06:02Cimely Velasco was up there.
06:05Roman Gregoire.
06:06Jake Stewart wondering what might have been.
06:08In the end, it was Caden that caned them.
06:13What an amazing performance.
06:18By a fabulous rider.
06:20Of course, the main GC rivals came across the line.
06:27Caden Bogatje just has to finish the job tomorrow.
06:30Caden Groves had one job today.
06:33And he did it.
06:38What a fabulous way to draw stage 20 to a close.
06:42Yeah, of course.
06:47I mean, there's so many emotions to win here.
06:51The team.
06:53We come here with so many different plans with Jaffer and Mathieu.
06:57And in the end, I get my own opportunities.
07:00They haven't gone the right way.
07:03But today, I mean, I had super legs.
07:07And I just suffered to the light.
07:11In Riverwood, we get a tour stage.
07:14And so, the general classification sees Caden Bogatje.
07:18Just has to finish in Paris.
07:20But he should maintain a margin of 4 minutes and 24 overall.
07:24We cannot wait for our grand finale.
07:29Of course, Montmartre will be very much part of proceedings.
07:33The Martre's Mount.
07:34It's kind of felt that way, this Tour de France.
07:37It's going to be a very, very special day.
07:40Unfamiliar peaks, perhaps within the final day.
07:45Maybe knocking back some of the ambitions of the sprinters.
07:48But you know what?
07:49Caden Groves, he showed that you can never count a quick man out.
07:53Especially on rough terrain.
07:55132.3 kilometers remain of this amazing Tour de France.
08:04How will it end?
08:06Well, you're just going to have to join us to find out.
08:10A wonderful way to draw this amazing race to a close.
08:17We'll see you tomorrow in Paris.
