00:00So far that sea was over. So far away. Too far away.
00:02Come on sea. Dry sea. Come on, come back in.
00:06Dry day. Dry gate. Oh, we're going to leave this thing to Jamaica.
00:09Anyway, listen. Now, this weekend marks one year since the 2024 Olympics kicked off in Paris.
00:16Yeah, the game saw our next guest to keep his ear, the Olympic medal, making Britain's most decorated diver ever.
00:22The win was made even more emotional after the game was since Tom Daly and Nuts is retiring from professional diving.
00:27But here on, he's stepping into a new platform to raise awareness of an all-important cause.
00:32Hi, you. Hello.
00:33Nice to see you.
00:34Nice to see you.
00:35Good to see you too.
00:37So, listen, let's just have a little deep dive into the career while we've got you.
00:41Yeah, we did that.
00:44Does that feel like a year ago?
00:46It does feel like a long time because I'm so used to training every day, like five hours a day, like six days a week I was training.
00:53So then like kind of stop. It's so weird.
00:55I wake up in the morning. I'm like, what am I to do today?
00:57You do a bit of knitting there?
00:59Yeah, I do a bit of knitting. I mean, I drop the kids off at school and then it's like, it's just a very different thing to not have to live your life thinking about diving.
01:06When you were training, was it literally done? Was it in the weights gym? Was it running?
01:10Yeah. I mean, 60% I would say was dry land.
01:12So we would do like gymnastics. We would do weightlifting. We'd do like cardio classes, sprint classes, like you name it.
01:19We kind of have to use like nearly every muscle in your body when you're diving.
01:22Because you're flying through the air, all the G-force, the twists and the turns, so you have to kind of get it right.
01:27What I never understand about diving is when you see things like, so I love jumping off stuff into things, which is one of the reasons why, thankfully you were here today.
01:34Though I love water and I love jumping off like, I don't know, rocks or whatever, but you don't have to be too high up to hurt yourself, do you? It's weird.
01:42Yeah, no, like it is quite a, like, I feel people often underestimate water.
01:48And that's like, I think what's kind of, for me as a parent now, like I find it so important about water safety.
01:54It's hard, isn't it?
01:55Yeah, like having kids being able to swim at a young age is important, but then also not underestimating the fact that as you get older, your relationship with water kind of changes.
02:03Because, you know, especially when it comes to summer, you might have a few drinks by the pool and then the dangers of that, because one in four drownings actually occur because of alcohol.
02:12Really?
02:13And when it's over 20 degrees, the risk of that is five times higher.
02:17This is really close to your heart, isn't it?
02:19Water, sand, ease, definitely close to your heart.
02:21And you don't realise when you have a drink how you don't know what you're doing.
02:26Sometimes you just don't know and you're out in your depth.
02:28Your reactions are a lot slower.
02:30People don't realise it, do they?
02:31Yeah, people don't realise, and I think it can often catch people off guard as well, and, you know, and since I've been knitting and crocheting and all that kind of stuff, I've actually crocheted a pair of heat-sensitive trunks of Malibu, of course, right, where over 20 degrees, they change colour to try and hopefully raise some awareness about the danger of when it's over 20 degrees, it's a lot of times more likely.
02:51Presumably that's a tight knit.
02:53I want to see the weave there is tight.
02:55You should not be doing any baggy knits.
02:57Don't want any baggy knits, you don't want it to be too loose.
02:59The guys are hanging out.
03:00Yeah, because everything's got to be in its way, especially diving.
03:03When you're walking at 35 miles an hour, you don't need anything to be out of place.
03:07To be coming off.
03:08You need it as close and back to you as possible.
03:12Do you miss it?
03:13I really miss it.
03:13Oh, yeah.
03:14I literally think, you know, I knew there was always going to have to be a time where I'd have to, like, hang out my trunks, if you like, and not get back in the pool.
03:22But I think about it every day going back, because I'm always like, I love, I literally loved it.
03:27It was like my happy place.
03:29Like, you know, my friends, my teammates getting to travel, all that stuff was so much fun.
03:33It's just, you know, I kind of have aged out.
03:36Like, I've been doing it for so long now that, you know, most people retire between maybe, like, 24 and 27.
03:44And I went until I was 30.
03:46So, like, you know.
03:47Isn't that weird to think?
03:48Because we've always known you as such a young guy.
03:50It's weird to think you were the old man of the circuit when you were, when you, when you, that's so strange.
03:55You know, I went from being, like, the 13-year-old, 14-year-old on the team at my first Olympics, and then all of a sudden going to Paris, and I was the, you know, the granddad of the team with two kids.
04:06Just looking up on drink diving, what advice would you give?
04:08Just looking down at 236,000 people die a year from traveling worldwide.
04:12Yeah.
04:12So, you want to curtail, you don't want to curtail fun.
04:15So, what advice would you give to people?
04:17I think it's just, if you have, if you think about it, and you're just really aware and responsible when you're drinking near a pool,
04:23whether it's a pool party, or you want a couple of drinks by the lake, the river, going to the beach, whatever it may be, just, just think about it.
04:31And think twice, and have it at the front of your mind, because it, even if you just have it there, that you're aware of it, I think that can make it, you know.
04:38And the whole message is really don't drink and die.
04:41And look after each other, do you know what I mean?
04:43Yeah.
04:43Look after each other.
04:44Listen, you've got a dream.
04:47You've got a dream you've always wanted to do in your life.
04:49What is it?
04:49Well, I can't believe I actually mentioned this, because basically when I was younger, they did this local,
04:53radio thing, where they were going around school, you can apply to read out the weather on the radio,
04:58and my friend got chosen, Harriet, right, and I was so jealous that she got to do it,
05:03and I've never got to do the weather.
05:05Well, it's happening for you, Harriet has just turned up.
05:09Don't have to bring it to your car.
05:11I was going to get my chance.
05:13I can confirm I've done the weather before, you're going to love it.
05:16So we are going to make this dream come true, aren't we, today?
05:19And you're going to actually do this.
05:21I can't wait.
05:21But listen, before you get in the zone, have to talk to the Traitors.
05:24What can you tell us?
05:25I would love to tell you everything.
05:27Did you mix it there?
05:28We had Mark Bonner on.
05:29I can't say anything.
05:30All I can say is we all had a lot of fun.
05:34We had Mark Bonner on on the couch.
05:36I think it was great.
05:37It sounded like Mary did.
05:38We know about the WhatsApp group.
05:40Was it something you really wanted to do?
05:43I've been a huge fan of the Traitors since I've watched all of the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand.
05:50I love it.
05:52I play it like the board game versions of it with my son.
05:57We have games night.
05:58I love Traitors.
05:58I can't wait for this in the world.
06:00Are you going to do the weather in your trunks?
06:02Maybe.
06:03Maybe not.
06:04You'll have to wait and see them.
06:05Well, Drowning Prevention Day is tomorrow.
06:07Thanks for coming and talking about it.
06:09See you very soon.
06:10Coming up, do you follow your loved ones' movements using tracking apps?
06:15As some say, it's got out of control.
06:16They can actually hear to discuss that.
06:18And today's headlines, that's with your official weather forecast before Tom's and translation
06:22is in a bit.
06:23He's chucks.
06:24He's chucks.
