'Rick and Morty' cast and co-creator stop by THR's suite at San Diego Comic-Con and share their favorite moments from season eight while also revealing that season nine is currently being recorded. Plus, Dan Harmon reveals that there's written episodes of season 10 he's already excited about.
00:00I was told last night that at Comic-Con we'll be doing a table read of the two best episodes.
00:05Yes.
00:06And my response was very sincerely, I was like, oh, maybe I should punch that script up before we...
00:11And Steve Levy said, it already aired on television.
00:25So great to get to see everyone.
00:27And, you know, the show just keeps exciting fans and keeps getting attention.
00:31Obviously, the James Gunn, Zack Snyder moment is a great example of that.
00:35What is either that or anything else?
00:38Favorite moments, favorite aspects of your character from season eight?
00:41Just to play a sort of demonic rabbit character.
00:45That was on your bucket list.
00:47That was amazing.
00:49I just rewatched one of the episodes where we go to human Earthworld.
00:53And I did like trying to pick out like the heads of the famous people that had the big heads.
01:00I thought that was funny.
01:01I thought it was like nice to do another little tribute to some crazy world place, fantasy park, you know.
01:07I really liked Morty getting to reconnect with his estranged son.
01:12I thought that was a really nice moment for the season.
01:17And, yeah, that was my favorite for Morty.
01:19For Frontier, I think Boss Hog Rick was my favorite.
01:22Just to jump into a Rick that was a real extreme version.
01:26Just a new iteration of the character.
01:28It's a lot of fun to play.
01:29And it was nice to play a 37-year-old version of Samurai as well.
01:32That was cool.
01:34I loved Beth and Space Beth getting to go back and revisit their childhood.
01:40Keeping track these days because we're so on schedule that we're out of schedule.
01:44So it's hard to keep track of the episodes.
01:48I was told last night that at Comic-Con we'll be doing a table read of the two Beths episodes.
01:53Yes.
01:54And my response was very sincerely.
01:56I was like, oh, maybe I should punch that script up before we start.
02:00And Steve Levy said, it already aired on television.
02:07And you're playing Child Beth.
02:09Yeah.
02:11One of the Beths, right?
02:13Are you going to entulate your child's spirit?
02:15Yes, I'll be reading the part of that time.
02:18If you just tried this, you're getting all the hottest table read news.
02:24I had a schedule that seems like a new thing for you or?
02:28Definitely, definitely.
02:29Very, very new.
02:31Very alien.
02:32I sometimes wake up in a cold sweat like, how do I destroy everything?
02:37How do I slow it down?
02:39Answer is I can't.
02:40I've got very suitable, very strong leadership.
02:42And Scott Marder is not here with us right now, but he's got that ship running very, very smoothly.
02:48He's so busy, he's still running the ship currently.
02:50That's why he can't be here right now.
02:51But he'll be here later.
02:52And, I mean, season nine is already written, or where are we out there?
02:56Yeah, I mean.
02:58Oh, yeah, we're recording it, too.
02:59Okay.
03:00Yeah, there's a lot.
03:01I mean, there's season 10 episodes, frankly.
03:04I don't know if that's kind of, like, sad for the listener to hear.
03:06Like, why are you three years ahead?
03:08That means that, I mean, yeah, we're not going to get that amazing Epstein episode.
03:12We're not going to have, like, hot topics there.
03:15We've got to keep it tight.
03:17Fire the files.
03:18Release the files now.
03:20No Trump penis.
03:21So we stay timeless, but I swear there's, like, there's episodes of season 10 that I'm already so excited about.
03:29That's kind of a frustrating thing of being on schedule in animation is, like, can we fast forward time so people can get a look at this bad boy?
03:37For sure.
03:37And, obviously, you know, fans loved having Gunn and Snyder involved.
03:41What was that like?
03:42What went into getting them on board?
03:44Honestly, I mean, I just suggested it at one point, and then we went through proper channels.
03:52There was no friendship abused or leveraged.
03:55I mean, there's producers that did probably great work finagling that, and I didn't really have anything to do with it.
04:03Or we were honored and stoked that they got to do it.
04:06I wasn't there for the record.
04:08Scott was, and he said they had a blast, and I think he said Zack Snyder wants to be a regular.
04:14It's fine.
04:14But all of his sequences will be dreams.
04:21He'll always exist in a Snyder cut of every episode.
04:26Amazing.
04:26And this will be held until proper time, but, obviously, the world continues to expand, and we have very exciting news with President Curtis.
04:35How did that come about?
04:36What can fans look forward to there?
04:39A different kind of control than you see now in the Oval Office.
04:42You know, different kinds of adventures as we plumb the universe, omniverse, you know.
04:50Just stay tuned.
04:53Amazing.
04:54Anything that fans can be particularly excited for with the finale that's coming up?
04:59I'm scared to say anything.
05:02I don't spoil anything.
05:04Yeah.
05:05Rick is hot.
05:07Yeah, say that.
05:08We can say that Rick is hot.
05:09Yeah, Rick is hot.
05:10According to it.
05:10Oh, my God, Rick is so hot.
05:13Yeah.
05:13You'll have to stay tuned.
05:16You know, find out.
05:17You really want to know?
05:19Do you really want to know?
05:20Then stay tuned.
05:23Is it tough to balance the serialized nature of fans wanting that element of the world and the universe and with just, like, a lot of episodic fun?
05:31It is tough.
05:32It is tough.
05:33I mean, my part of it is I'll just always kind of insist on the modular one-off kind of thing because I think that's a thing that is harder to pull off and therefore requires more energy.
05:46And serialization is a glorious, wonderful thing that kind of happens automatically to a show that people love.
05:54So it doesn't really need help.
05:57And so I, but we do have, like, younger, smarter people on the staff whose very job is to, like, remember which Rick is from which dimension and stuff.
06:09And they make great, strong advocates for fantastic, like, canonical, mythical episodes.
06:14And so my job can be, like, hey, let's make this, like, ALF.
06:19And they're like, who?
06:21ALF.
06:22ALF.
06:23Was it just my definition of, like, a really modular show?
06:28Get excited for ALF, everyone.
06:30Do you know the ALF finale?
06:32Have you, do you guys familiar with the ALF finale?
06:35They did this thing where they truly, clearly thought that there was going to be more episodes.
06:40So they ended on this gigantic cliffhanger where ALF gets, like, captured by the government at the end.
06:46And that's just how ALF went off the air, was with ALF surrounded by FBI and Pentagon people.
06:51Oh, my God.
06:52Going like, who?
06:54Who?
06:55It was a wild joke.
06:56You guys going to dissect me or what?
06:58And then it's just, credit, Dick Wolf.
07:03And they never again, it's like, ALF is just out there on an operating table somewhere with his kidneys and a bowl.
07:08They did do a reunion special, but it wasn't a reunion special.
07:12They only reunited ALF.
07:15Is this real?
07:16Yes, yes.
07:16Is this real?
07:17I mean, I was just, I was told this by our millennial kind of, like, writing staff.
07:22They brought it up on YouTube and showed me the whole thing.
