00:00what's up guys welcome back to the channel in today's video we are looking at unmasking
00:06design thinking so that is just looking at the illusion of control in the ai era so we really
00:13just want to talk about how design thinking is for those that don't already know it's a problem
00:21solving methodology and approach that i think more or less originated in the field of design
00:28but has now since been widely adopted across various disciplines and industries and it
00:34actually emphasizes a human centered and iterative approach to tackling complex problems and also just
00:42finding innovative solutions so with design thinking essentially the needs of sort of perspectives
00:51of our end users or customers are considered heavily and also it tries to use empathy as a key
01:00driver in the actual problem solving process so in recent years design thinking has also gained
01:08widespread sort of just a popularity as a powerful tool for navigating sort of this new era of ai
01:18led innovation so it has some proponents who argue that it does bring a human centered approach
01:26to this development of artificial intelligence systems also just fostering innovation and empathy
01:33however if we look beneath that that glossy surface we do see that there's a deeply flawed a fundamental
01:41sort of uh methodology that fails to actually address the challenges that ai does pose and design thinking is
01:50nothing more than pretty much a trojan horse that disguises the true nature of ai and the revolution
01:59and actually perpetuates a false sense of control so let's talk about uh for example just the illusion of uh
02:08this whole idea of user centered design okay so with design thinking um it does place this great emphasis on
02:16understanding and actually meeting uh user needs and also this approach uh claims uh to be very essential
02:26to successful implementation of artificial intelligence while it is obviously undoubtedly important to consider
02:34uh user uh user perspectives uh design thinking often falls into the trap of actually assuming that humans
02:41are um sort of uh um misguided or that the let's say the ultimate arbitrage of uh decision making
02:50within ai systems so this belief uh which is misguided i believe actually overlooks uh the fact that ai
02:58systems are designed uh are designed to analyze vast amounts of data and make autonomous decisions based
03:06on complex algorithms and the user just becomes more or less a cog in the ai machine subject to its own
03:14sort of biases and its limitations and also we can just talk about this area of just the ethical concerns
03:22uh and obviously ethics and ai have become uh hot topics i've written several articles about this
03:29um and obviously design thinking does promise to tackle these issues head-on however the reality is
03:35that you know with design thinking it does offer a superficial approach to ethical concerns it often
03:41relies on subjective uh assumptions in just simplistic moral frameworks i believe that fail to kind of
03:48capture the true complexity of uh ethical uh decision making uh when it comes to the uh area of ai so design
03:58thinking it does provide a false sense of comfort it creates this illusion of addressing ethical dilemmas
04:05while ignoring the profound societal implications of uh this new technology and its rapid advancement
04:14uh let's also just talk about this whole idea of uh people talk about disempowering like human agency and
04:21we know that with design thinking it does advocate uh sort of uh or just me most people that are like
04:30sort of advocating uh this sort of uh claim that it empowers individuals to shape and influence
04:36these ai systems but this narrative actually fails to recognize
04:41just the inherent power imbalances between uh ai developers and the users so the majority of
04:48individuals lack obviously this technical expertise to actually engage meaningfully in the design process
04:54itself uh leaving them uh at the mercy of the ai experts so design thinking perpetuates this myth of
05:01democratic control while consolidating power in the hands of a select few which actually fed them
05:07marginalizes those who are already uh disadvantaged and we can also just talk about this whole kind of
05:14innovation fetishism where you know you see the cost uh of uh just ignoring social context overall so one
05:21of the main selling points of design thinking is its ability to foster innovation so uh if you think about
05:28it though the ai revolution as well with uh this innovation it's almost always kind of um divorced from uh critical
05:38analysis in the social economic uh political context in which uh uh ai actually operates so um design
05:47thinking's focus on ideation and just this rapid uh prototyping uh does more or less obscure the need
05:55for deep reflection on the potential consequences of these ai systems by prioritizing sort of innovation
06:02at any cost uh design thinking i believe also just kind of undermines that urgent need for comprehensive
06:10societal debates on the implications of ai which is something that's you know been like a hot topic
06:16we've seen like even um you know people like you know musk kind of bring this argument to to kind of the
06:23mainstream uh but lastly i just really want to talk about this perpetuation of uh what i would call or
06:30sort of term technological determinism uh with design thinking and you know it actually unwittingly sort of
06:37reinforces uh that prevailing narrative of technological determinism which is the belief that technology
06:44shapes society not the other way around uh so with sort of emphasizing this design process over the
06:50critical evaluation of the actual societal impact of uh artificial intelligence or the design thinking
06:57itself actually ends up sort of downplaying uh sort of the need to deliberate uh and um sort of bring
07:05about this uh democratic decision making it actually just ends up becoming a bit complicit in the
07:11perpetuation of uh a future where humans are merely sort of passive consumers of ai uh rather than active
07:19participants in its uh trajectory which i think is is is the viewpoint that i feel a lot of people just
07:26take i've done like i said you know a few articles that i've put out on the mainstream outlets just
07:33talking about kind of uh how you know people can augment their business models and things like that using
07:40ai but i think a lot of the kind of general day-to-day conversations that i have with people they
07:45almost feel like it's a technology that uh you know it's there to sort of shape how their lives are going
07:54to become instead of sort of them just looking at it as as like a really like uh a tool that you can kind
08:02of manipulate to your own advantage so ultimately i think like i said uh initially like you know we see
08:09this uh sort of trojan horse in the ai revolution being that design thinking may seem like a powerful
08:16tool for navigating this ai revolution but beneath all that sort of shiny facade there is this flawed
08:26methodology that fails to address the profound challenges that actually ai does pose and this
08:32focus on user-centric design ethics and innovation can actually give a false sense of control
08:38and perpetuate some of these imbalances so i think generally by embracing design thinking without
08:45sort of a critical examination we actually risk becoming more complicit in this whole ai revolution
08:55and you know in the uncontrolled growth and also just the unforeseen consequences
09:01um there's a lot of uh depending of who you like listen to it's it's kind of a mix between you know
09:09like uh empowerment and uh kind of really uh subjugation you know depending on how or which end of the
09:15spectrum you're going to be as far as your utilization or adoption of this technology so i think ultimately
09:23to truly navigate uh this ai space we need to actually just go beyond design thinking and engage
09:31this um sort of uh a whole ai thing in a more comprehensive kind of uh inclusive um ethical you
09:39know kind of discussion on on a worldwide scale about the future that we want to create just through
09:46leveraging this technology so i think you know this is something that uh i just wanted to share
09:53with you guys that you know i hear a lot of uh kind of people in the tech space talking about design
09:58thinking and its role in how we can shape uh the way our ai is going to kind of uh get developed um but
10:06let me know what you guys think let me know um make sure obviously you check out uh the links in the

10:31about uh tech and uh how that whole uh space in terms of like the different technologies i know we
10:38heavily focused on uh blockchain and crypto on this channel but i think um you know also lately i have
10:45touched on a lot of uh use cases of ai within even like distributed ledger systems uh how you guys can
10:52even use ai to create automated trading strategies uh for you know like your crypto trades etc so you know
10:59check out the links to the platforms that i like to use uh i like to use decentralized exchanges non
