00:00You shouldn't even exist. I mean, we took out Cyberdyne over 10 years ago,
00:04but we stopped Judgment Day.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best
00:11twists that elevated otherwise forgettable films.
00:14How could she fool us?
00:16She's been passing herself off as a little girl for most of her life.
00:19Obviously, there will be spoilers ahead.
00:22Number 30, an elaborate revenge plot, Lucky Number Slevin.
00:26A man named Max and his son Henry are killed by the mob.
00:30Jeez, you just blew on the seven horse.
00:32What have you done with my son?
00:34He's on his way home, just like you.
00:37Years later, Slevin Kalevra finds himself trapped between two crime bosses,
00:43the rabbi and, fittingly, the boss.
00:45Also involved is a shadowy figure known as Mr. Good Cat.
00:49Bear with us, it gets kind of complicated.
00:52Fast forward to the ending, and we learn that Slevin is actually the young Henry
00:56from the prologue, who was spared by the assassin Mr. Good Cat
01:00after he had an attack of conscience.
01:03The movie's events were all a ploy concocted by Slevin and Good Cat
01:07to get revenge on the rabbi and the boss,
01:09both of whom had ordered the death of Max.
01:12You?
01:14No.
01:16You're dead.
01:20You're dead!
01:21It's a neat little family-based twist
01:23that elevates an otherwise run-of-the-mill mob thriller.
01:27Number 29.
01:28Hartley is a conman.
01:30Red Notice.
01:31Despite its star-studded cast,
01:33Red Notice really flew under the radar
01:35and garnered a middling reception.
01:38A traditional heist caper,
01:40it involves three people fighting over stolen jewels
01:42that once belonged to Cleopatra.
01:44Booth, I'm curious.
01:46How's it feel to be sold out by the most wanted art thief in the world?
01:50I'm the most wanted art thief in the world.
01:53You were.
01:54John Hartley is the FBI agent
01:56on the trails of professional thieves
01:58Nolan Booth and Sarah Black.
02:00Or is he?
02:02Turns out Hartley is actually a conman
02:04and the husband of Sarah,
02:06and they're both working together against Nolan.
02:09They targeted the thief
02:10and used him to find the location of the third and final jewel,
02:13which they proceed to snag for themselves.
02:16It was all a lie.
02:18You're in the soft story about your dad?
02:20No.
02:21My dad was a conman and I hated him.
02:24So I decided to become better than he ever was.
02:27Beat him in his own game.
02:28It's these types of twisty,
02:29who-can-you-trust mind games
02:31that make heist thrillers so much fun.
02:34Number 28.
02:36Donnie was the mastermind.
02:37Den of Thieves.
02:38At this point,
02:39we should always expect an otherwise unassuming member of a gang
02:42to be the true criminal mastermind.
02:45Den of Thieves follows a police detective named Nick O'Brien
02:48as he tries to stop a gang from robbing the Federal Reserve.
02:52Dealing with a different animal here, boys.
02:53One of the gang's members is getaway driver Donnie Wilson,
02:57played by O'Shea Jackson Jr.
02:59In the exciting climax of the film,
03:01Nick successfully recovers the bags of stolen money,
03:04only to find them filled with shredded paper.
03:07What he doesn't find is Donnie,
03:09who had swapped the bags and taken the cash for himself,
03:12having orchestrated the whole heist from the get-go.
03:15You know everything was accounted for at the Fed, right?
03:20Yeah, at least so.
03:21It's a great way to end what is essentially just a rip-off of heat.
03:25Number 27.
03:27Cliff and Sidney are the killers.
03:29A perfect getaway.
03:31This ironically named movie takes place in Hawaii
03:33and concerns three couples,
03:35Cliff and Sidney,
03:37Nick and Gina,
03:38and Kale and Cleo.
03:39Well, you didn't say you were doing the trail, so...
03:42Well, neither did you.
03:45But we offered you a ride.
03:47You didn't want it.
03:49You didn't take it.
03:50So I don't really understand what the issue is.
03:53The couples meet on a remote hike,
03:54but they become wary of each other
03:56when a homicide is reported in the area,
03:58with the perps being described as a man and woman.
04:01Kale and Cleo are eventually arrested for the murders,
04:04which surprises no one,
04:06considering their generally creepy nature.
04:08Of course, it was all a red herring.
04:10The real killers are who we least expected.
04:13Cliff and Sidney,
04:14two drug users who murder tourists
04:16and assume their identities.
04:18She was kind of classy, huh?
04:20Hey, rule two?
04:24Keep the game face on.
04:29Come on, honey.
04:31The movie is much smarter than your average thriller,
04:33and this twist is certainly a big part of it.
04:36Number 26.
04:38Millie and Nick are working together.
04:40Reindeer Games.
04:42Okay, pay attention, because this gets complicated.
04:44So Nick and Rudy are prison cellmates,
04:47but Nick is killed in a fight.
04:48When Rudy gets out,
04:49he pretends to be Nick and meets Ashley,
04:52with whom Nick had been exchanging letters.
04:54Look, Ashley, I'm sorry.
04:56I was scared that I was gonna walk out there
04:59and you were gonna take one look at me
05:00and just turn around.
05:03You know, I was scared I was walking out of heartache.
05:05Then he gets sucked into a casino heist
05:07planned by Ashley's brother, Gabriel.
05:10Fast forward a bit,
05:11and we learn that Gabriel and Ashley
05:12are actually lovers, not siblings.
05:15Plot twist one.
05:17Plot twist two,
05:18Nick shows up alive and well.
05:20And plot twist three,
05:22Ashley is actually Millie Bobeck,
05:24and she's been working with the presumed dead Nick
05:26from the very beginning.
05:28Get all that?
05:29Point is, it's a fun reveal
05:30that adds some much-needed spice
05:32to an otherwise ho-hum heist thriller.
05:35I always wanted to rob that casino, Rudy.
05:38Way back when I worked there.
05:40What better way than to get some guys
05:42to rob it for me?
05:43Number 25.
05:44Tom took on Rogue's identity.
05:46War.
05:47Jet Li plays Rogue,
05:49a Yakuza assassin who was seemingly shot
05:51and killed by FBI agent Tom Lone.
05:54Did you get him?
05:55I got him.
05:56You sure?
05:58Took one in the face.
05:59He's dead, relax.
06:00However, he survives and murders Tom and his family
06:03before burning down their home.
06:05Later, Rogue fights Yakuza boss,
06:08Shiro Yanagawa,
06:09who realizes that he is not actually Rogue,
06:11but the supposedly deceased Tom Lone.
06:14Tom had pulled a trick on both the Yakuza
06:16and the audience.
06:18He killed Rogue that night,
06:19put his wedding ring on his finger,
06:21and burned the house down
06:22to make his corpse unrecognizable.
06:24You're Tom Lone.
06:26He then had his face surgically altered
06:37to resemble Rogue
06:38so he could go on a revenge spree.
06:40There's nothing like a good face swap plot twist
06:43to help a movie stand out.
06:45Number 24.
06:46Anna imagined Alex and killed everyone.
06:49The Uninvited.
06:50While it's a lesser remake of the Korean film
06:53A Tale of Two Sisters,
06:54The Uninvited is a decent enough flick
06:56that's redeemed by a solid plot twist.
06:59The movie follows sisters, Anna and Alex,
07:02who are convinced that their father's new girlfriend,
07:04Rachel, murdered their mother in a house fire.
07:06The fire wasn't an accident.
07:12It was her.
07:13Tensions build,
07:14and Alex ultimately murders Rachel.
07:17But as we eventually learn,
07:18most of the movie's events took place in Anna's head.
07:21Suffering from mental illness,
07:23Anna accidentally killed both her mother and Alex
07:26in a house fire,
07:27and pinned the blame on Rachel as a coping mechanism.
07:30I did exactly what you asked.
07:33Did what, Anna?
07:41I finished what I started.
07:43She then imagined Alex and murdered Rachel
07:45as a result of her worsening delusions.
07:48It's a great twist that deepens both the plot
07:50and Anna's character.
07:52Number 23.
07:53Everyone is dead.
07:55Passengers.
07:56They were dead all along is a tricky twist
07:58that is not often welcomed by audiences.
08:01In fact, reactions to it can be pretty darned hostile.
08:04But we think it gives this otherwise unmemorable film
08:07a memorable kick.
08:08It certainly helped us remember it.
08:10When did you first realize that something was wrong?
08:14The concept is simple.
08:15Anne Hathaway is Claire Summers,
08:17a psychotherapist who counsels the survivors
08:19of a plane crash.
08:21But they're not actually survivors.
08:22In reality, everyone died in the accident,
08:25including Claire,
08:26who's having trouble accepting her demise
08:28and is imagining herself as a psychotherapist.
08:31Talking to other deceased people
08:33was a way to help her come to terms with her own death.
08:36And everyone else?
08:39They're just here to help us find our way.
08:42It works.
08:43In the end, Claire finally accepts her new position
08:46and sails into the afterlife.
08:48Number 22.
08:50Maggie is Freddy's daughter.
08:51Freddy's dead.
08:52The final nightmare.
08:53As the title suggests,
08:55this was meant to be the final movie
08:57in the Elm Street franchise.
08:59And what better way to end it
09:00than with a little patricide?
09:02A John Doe is brought to a youth shelter,
09:04which is run by Dr. Maggie Burroughs.
09:07How long have you been awake?
09:08As far as I can remember.
09:10I don't know.
09:11About three days.
09:14Looks more like three weeks.
09:16Together, they discover that the mythical
09:18Freddy Krueger had a child.
09:19Maggie checks her adoption papers
09:22and discovers that she is that child.
09:24Her real name is Catherine Krueger,
09:26but it was changed when Freddy was arrested.
09:29So she confronts her father,
09:30pulls him into the real world,
09:32and sticks a pipe bomb in his chest.
09:34Happy Father's Day.
09:35The family dynamics are interesting,
09:38and it gives the franchise a satisfying ending.
09:40Or rather, what should have been its ending.
09:43Number 21.
09:44They're All in a Killer's Mind.
09:46Identity.
09:47This is a highly divisive movie,
09:50and it all boils down to its famous twist.
09:52For some, this was just another forgettable
09:54Agatha Christie movie,
09:56with people being mysteriously killed off
09:58in an isolated motel.
10:00Jesus, mother of God.
10:01Who is this?
10:03The woman I was driving.
10:05The story is inspired by
10:07And Then There Were None,
10:08and for many, it was a pale imitation of it.
10:11Until that twist.
10:13We learn that these people are actually
10:14the personalities of Malcolm Rivers,
10:16a murderer suffering from dissociative identity disorder.
10:20Malcolm's psychiatrist is attempting
10:21to remove the different personalities,
10:24which we see visualized as the violent events in the motel.
10:27Just when we thought this was another ordinary murder mystery,
10:31in comes this wild twist to prove us all wrong.
10:34I need you to understand,
10:35the killer cannot survive.
10:38It's divisive, yes,
10:40but it's certainly unforgettable.
10:42Number 20.
10:43The Devil's Identity
10:44Devil
10:45Devil deserves points for an exciting premise.
10:48Five strangers are trapped in an elevator.
10:51One by one,
10:52a person is killed by someone in the group
10:54while everyone tries to figure out the culprit.
10:56He's probably trying to figure out
10:58which one of us is the murderer.
11:01Although it's an interesting story setup,
11:04Devil becomes too similar to Saw.
11:06The film basically becomes about
11:07how gruesome the next death will be.
11:09These cheap thrills aren't particularly exhilarating
11:13until the climax.
11:14It turns out that an elderly woman
11:16who died early on is the true villain.
11:19Even more surprisingly,
11:21she's the actual Devil.
11:23The antagonist deliberately trapped
11:24sinful people together to collect their souls.
11:27You're not good.
11:29I know.
11:30You think you can make up for the choices you made?
11:33No.
11:35You think you can be forgiven?
11:37This flips Devil's story on its head
11:40since each person deserves
11:41to be held responsible for their crimes.
11:44Number 19.
11:45The Real Villain
11:46The Nutcracker and The Four Realms
11:48This fantasy adventure is about protagonist Clara
11:51bringing peace to a magical land.
11:54She teams with the Sugar Plum Fairy
11:56while grieving her mother's death,
11:58the former queen of the realms.
12:00Mother Ginger's the one who began this war.
12:03I hope you'll be the one to finish it.
12:06The film's good versus bad outline lacks originality,
12:11feeling like a rehash of superhero movies.
12:14Its twist does signify deeper themes
12:16relating to Clara's loss
12:17as Sugar Plum's betrayal comes to light.
12:20Mother Ginger, the supposed villain,
12:22is revealed to be falsely accused.
12:25Perceiving the death of Clara's mother as abandonment,
12:27Sugar Plum plans to become queen in her place.
12:30Your mother abandoned us.
12:34And then?
12:35She just expects us to carry on and play nice.
12:38Well, I don't want to play nice!
12:40Meanwhile, Clara accepts losing her mother,
12:43empowering herself to defeat the villain.
12:46This turn of events contrasts the two characters,
12:49adding the required emotional depth
12:50that's lacking for most of the story.
12:53Number 18.
12:54The Real Brahms
12:55The Boy
12:56Miss Evans, allow me to introduce Mr. Hilsher.
13:00Miss Evans.
13:02And this is our son, Brahms.
13:05American nanny Greta is given the strange job
13:08of looking after a porcelain doll named Brahms.
13:11This begins a drawn-out plot
13:13about odd events surrounding the doll,
13:15which convinces Greta that it's possessed
13:17by the spirit of her employer's deceased child.
13:20Unfortunately, much of The Boy's runtime
13:22is about jump scares
13:23that don't do much to move the plot forward.
13:25It's only at the end
13:27when the payoff for the shock value moments arrives.
13:30Brahms, the titular boy,
13:32isn't actually a boy.
13:33He's not even a ghost.
13:35Brahms has been alive this whole time,
13:37living within the house's walls
13:38to spy on Greta.
13:40Miss Brahms.
13:42It can't be.
13:45Oh, no.
13:48No!
13:49The movements of the doll
13:50were all orchestrated by Brahms himself,
13:53providing an impressive turn of events
13:55to an otherwise formulaic film.
13:57Number 17.
13:59The truth behind the community.
14:01Don't worry, darling.
14:02In a seemingly idyllic 50s town called Victory,
14:06housewife Alice Chambers starts to notice things are off.
14:10She realizes her husband, Jack,
14:11and all the men are hiding a secret.
14:13Do you even know what Frank is actually doing?
14:15It's classified.
14:16We're not even allowed to discuss our jobs
14:17with other departments.
14:18You know that.
14:19What if Margaret was right?
14:21Stop it, Alice.
14:22What if this place is dangerous?
14:23Stop it!
14:25Don't Worry Darling suffers from an identity crisis,
14:28not fully committing to being a psychological thriller
14:31or a commentary on male fragility.
14:34After wasting some of its runtime on these themes,
14:37the final act of the movie turns things around.
14:39Alice comes to know that Victory isn't real.
14:42It's a simulated reality where she and the other women
14:45are trapped by the men.
14:46Do you consent to the physical and medical requirements
14:49for entry to victory?
14:50Yes.
14:51Are you aware that you are responsible
14:53for the physical upkeep of your chosen life?
14:58Yes.
14:59This brings context to the odd behavior
15:01of most of the characters,
15:03as they knew the secret all along.
15:05The revelation also adds much-needed tension
15:07to Alice's bid for freedom.
15:09Life is too similar to other alien-based films
15:16to feel original, featuring a story about a species
15:19that slowly takes out a space crew one by one.
15:23It has a rather generic plot line
15:25where the characters figure out a way
15:26to stop Calvin the alien.
15:29Control.
15:30This is a station.
15:31Station for control.
15:32The specimen's location is unknown.
15:34It is to be considered hostile and deadly.
15:37Our intent is to isolate and destroy it
15:39in compliance with protocol.
15:41The ending makes it appear
15:42that Miranda North has escaped,
15:44while David Jordan has sacrificed himself
15:46to prevent Calvin from reaching Earth.
15:48The film's final moments are where
16:08this seemingly predictable story
16:09takes a huge turn,
16:11as it was Miranda's pod
16:12that was knocked off course
16:13while David has reached Earth with Calvin.
16:15This changes life's direction completely,
16:30leaving us stunned
16:31with the chilling realization
16:32that humanity might be doomed.
16:34Number 15.
16:36Morty's Real Identity.
16:38Click.
16:38Where's the box?
16:39Does it come with directions?
16:41Not necessary.
16:43Just point.
16:45Click.
16:46Eventually, it will program itself.
16:51Perpetually frustrated,
16:52Michael Newman is offered a time-skipping remote
16:54by a mysterious man named Morty.
16:57While Michael initially has fun with it,
16:59his life ultimately spirals out of control.
17:02Click has some emotionally stirring moments,
17:04but the slapstick comedy can become annoying to watch.
17:07The premise also overstays its welcome
17:09after several time-skips.
17:11But the reveal of Morty's true nature
17:13saves the movie.
17:15With decades skipped beyond salvation,
17:17Michael finds out that Morty is the angel of death.
17:20An angel, Michael.
17:22An angel.
17:24I thought an angel was supposed to protect people.
17:28I'm the angel of death.
17:29The remote was a way for Michael to appreciate his life,
17:32giving him an extremely long lesson to learn.
17:35Unlike stereotypical portrayals of the angel of death,
17:39Morty isn't an evil entity,
17:41but someone who shows Michael that he's been making the wrong decisions in life.
17:45Number 14.
17:46Jamie's father.
17:48Dead silence.
17:49Jamie Ashen tries to figure out a way to end his family's curse
17:53as the ghost of ventriloquist Mary Shaw looks to end his bloodline.
17:57All these years you've resented me for sending you away,
18:00but I did it to distance you from this curse.
18:03Taking a slow build toward its conclusion,
18:06Dead silence spends a lot of its runtime showing the protagonist lost and confused.
18:12Jamie's story is riddled with many bait-and-switch moments
18:15until he thinks he's beaten Mary by destroying her last doll.
18:30However, the final moments have Jamie realize that he was led astray.
18:34His father turns out to be a doll controlled by his wife,
18:38who is possessed by Mary.
18:39With no place to run,
18:41a horrified Jamie learns this is how his demise was planned the whole time.
18:57Now, who's the dummy?
18:59Although the villain wins,
19:08the manner of her victory does deserve praise.
19:12Number 13.
19:13Tim's Endgame.
19:15Seven Pounds.
19:16Seven Pounds has earnest intent with its story about the power of kindness.
19:20Because you are a good man.
19:25No, really.
19:26Even when you don't know that people are watching you.
19:32But it gets very melodramatic as the film goes on,
19:35making it a bit of a drag to watch.
19:37It follows Ben Thomas, who seeks to help supposed strangers.
19:42Keeping up with the abundance of characters is difficult
19:44until the ending ties everything together.
19:47We learn Ben is actually Tim Thomas,
19:50who was responsible for causing multiple deaths in an accident.
19:53Tim is giving his organs away to people in need to redeem himself,
19:57culminating in his own demise to save seven lives.
20:01I got lung cancer and I needed a double-lobe transplant.
20:07Tim could only give me one, of course.
20:11I must have planted a seed.
20:13His sacrifice justifies every interaction he's had in the film,
20:17carving out Tim's role as a tragic hero
20:19and slapping viewers right in the feels.
20:22Number 12.
20:23The truth about the Devereaux's.
20:25The skeleton key.
20:27Look, you said the house had a history, right?
20:30Hoodoo is pretty harmless.
20:31Harmless how?
20:33Well, it's psychological, like a lot of that stuff.
20:35Can't hurt you if you don't believe it.
20:37This supernatural horror contains many scenes
20:40with characters talking about hoodoo.
20:42All this exposition dulls the skeleton key's quality
20:45since so much talking leaves little room for scares.
20:48Kate Hudson's character, Caroline,
20:51becomes a caretaker of an elderly couple, the Devereaux's.
20:54The initially skeptical protagonist
20:56eventually believes the old people are hoodoo practitioners
20:59and tries to escape.
21:01But it turns out that all of Caroline's research
21:03was manipulated to make her believe in hoodoo
21:06and prepared for possession.
21:08The Devereaux's are century-old body snatchers
21:11who lure young people to their plantation.
21:14Caroline and estate lawyer Luke
21:16are the latest in a long line of victims.
21:19All the talk of hoodoo in the film
21:20were discreet hints for viewers
21:21to prepare for this grand twist.
21:24I think it fits you beautifully.
21:26It's better than Violet.
21:29Or Grace, even.
21:32We'll get used to it.
21:34We always do.
21:35Number 11.
21:37The truth about Gabriel.
21:39Malignant.
21:39Director James Wan frequently uses
21:42slow-burn stories with a twist.
21:44Malignant follows this template as well.
21:47It begins when mistreated
21:48Madison Mitchell's violent husband is killed.
21:51You're in a hospital.
21:52Where's Derek?
21:54Do you remember what happened?
21:56Someone broke into your house.
21:59You were attacked.
22:01And Derek.
22:03Madison learns that her childhood imaginary friend Gabriel
22:06is behind the deaths of people connected to her.
22:10Although the film repeats this cycle of violence more than necessary,
22:13the twist of Gabriel's sudden reappearance is worth the wait.
22:17We learn that Gabriel is Madison's parasitic twin brother,
22:20who can control her body.
22:22After being extracted from her at childbirth,
22:25Gabriel's consciousness has remained in her mind.
22:27One twin is dominant while the other is underdeveloped.
22:31It's not considered conjoined because the underdeveloped twin
22:33is dependent on the body of the other.
22:35Like a parasite, Gabriel feeds off Emily.
22:39The hunt for the killer went around in circles
22:41because Madison was indirectly the killer all along.
22:45This clever twist alters the context of the film's events
22:48and sets up its horror-filled ending.
22:52Number 10.
22:53David's Dream.
22:54Vanilla Sky.
22:55Vanilla Sky opens with David Ames
22:57providing his account of the events that ruined his life.
23:00An accident leaves David's face disfigured,
23:03alienating him from his lover Sophia.
23:06Let's get it all out.
23:07Say everything now.
23:08Just, just...
23:09David.
23:10Say everything, say everything now.
23:11Now, now, now.
23:13I'll tell you in another life when we are both cats.
23:16Incoherent storytelling techniques
23:18and constant tonal changes in the narrative
23:20make it confusing to keep up with Vanilla Sky.
23:23But the climax answers why David's life is a blur.
23:26He's been in cryogenic sleep for over a century,
23:30waiting for technology to develop enough
23:32to repair his disfigurement.
23:34All the mayhem shortly after his accident
23:36was a glitch in his lucid dream,
23:38causing his feelings of guilt and sadness
23:40to catch up to him.
23:41Your subconscious did create problems.
23:45Your dream turned into a nightmare
23:46and this gentleman was able to uncover
23:49the fabric of our work.
23:51The glitch has been corrected.
23:54The ambiguity of David's fate
23:55is a clever way to leave viewers contemplating
23:58what comes next.
23:59Number 9.
24:00The Cat.
24:02Fallen.
24:03This supernatural horror movie's plot
24:05has detective Hobbes and Jonesy
24:07track the demon Azazel,
24:09who possesses people hoping to cause global calamity.
24:12Just tell me what they want.
24:14The demons?
24:16They want the fall of civilization,
24:18the fall of Babylon, as they put it.
24:21The premise quickly takes a downturn
24:23since Azazel's body hopping becomes played out
24:26and nothing else really happens.
24:28Fallen also comes across as too convoluted
24:30for a horror movie.
24:32But this makes way for an ingeniously simple twist
24:35no one would see coming.
24:36Before letting Azazel take over his body,
24:39Hobbes poisons himself while at a secluded cabin
24:42to ensure the demon is stranded forever.
24:44You don't smoke anymore.
24:51That's right, I don't.
24:54You know why?
24:58Because cigarettes kill.
25:03Especially cigarettes leased with poison.
25:06However, Azazel breaks the fourth wall
25:08to mock us for thinking the good guy would win,
25:10as he possesses a cat to head back to civilization.
25:13Oh, you forgot something, didn't you?
25:20At the beginning, I said I was going to tell you
25:23about the time I almost died.
25:27This intellectual twist proves the devil
25:29does come in many forms.
25:32Number eight, Remy's true reality, Repo Men.
25:37This movie's premise is about repo men in the future,
25:40whose job is to repossess artificially enhanced organs.
25:43My job is simple.
25:45Can't pay for your car, the bank takes it back.
25:49Can't pay for your house, the bank takes it back.
25:54Can't pay for your liver.
25:57Well, that's where I come in.
25:58The main character, Remy's attempt to escape the repossession of his heart
26:02eventually spirals into a predictable chase story.
26:05The story seems to reach its cliche happy ending
26:08when a glitch brings everything back to reality.
26:11It's revealed that Remy's injury at one point in the film
26:14had caused severe brain damage.
26:16And all that he sees is part of a simulation.
26:19Let's go, buddy.
26:25No!
26:27Remy and his love interest are actually barely alive,
26:31meaning the happy ending only exists in Remy's mind.
26:34This subverts usual action movie stereotypes
26:37in favor of a dark and realistic conclusion
26:39that is bittersweet yet thought-provoking at the same time.
26:43Number 7.
26:52Ender's Simulations
26:53Ender's Game
26:54Ender's Game follows the titular character's training
26:57to prevent an alien invasion.
26:59He partakes in simulations of the alien race known as Formix,
27:03gaining victory through his strategically brilliant mind.
27:06Ender, watch our right flag.
27:07We need backup for Bernard.
27:08I see it.
27:09Bernard, you flagged them.
27:10Copy that.
27:10Using 10 through 18.
27:11Alive, heel right.
27:14Dink, compensate for the pull of Planet G8 and go full throttle.
27:17However, the film devotes a lot of time to the gaming aspect,
27:21which prevents the supporting characters from having much depth.
27:24It's only by the ending that the importance of the many simulations becomes apparent.
27:29Ender finds out that these were all happening in real time,
27:32and he's responsible for wiping out most of the Formix race.
27:35It's a solid twist that turns the protagonist into a villain
27:38without anyone realizing it.
27:40I will bear the shame of this genocide forever.
27:43No.
27:44You will be remembered as a hero.
27:46I will be remembered as a killer!
27:48The reveal of the Formix's true peaceful nature makes Ender's misunderstood actions all the more tragic.
27:56Number 6.
27:57Betrayal.
27:58Smoke and Aces.
27:59FBI agents Mesner and Carruthers are tasked to keep the informant Aces alive from mob boss Baratza's bounty.
28:06No former witness against the mob has been as crucial or as important as Buddy Aces.
28:12Israel is not only essential to our case, he is our case.
28:17Unfortunately, the influx of many characters turns this into a highly convoluted plot that runs around in circles until the climax presents the big twist.
28:26The FBI is revealed to be working with the mob, as Baratza himself is an informant, and Aces' father, whom the FBI hand over as part of their deal.
28:36The Bureau betrayed us.
28:38Wake up.
28:38You betrayed us, Deputy Director Locke.
28:41You betrayed us the way you betrayed them.
28:43You shit.
28:44You fucking asshole!
28:46Disgusted that the FBI's own corrupt activities caused so many deaths,
28:51Mesner pulls the plugs on both Aces and Sparata to destroy everyone's plans.
28:56After messing around with the plot so much, Smoke and Aces' morally appropriate ending presents a great contrast to all the prior, over-the-top violence.
29:26Number 5.
29:28Everything Comes Full Circle.
29:30Final Destination 5.
29:32The Final Destination movies have never been critical darlings, mainly because the plot lines lack many surprises.
29:38We all gotta get off.
29:40What are you talking about?
29:41The bridge is gonna collapse.
29:43What?
29:44We're all gonna die.
29:45What the hell is going on?
29:46We're all gonna die if we don't get off this bridge, now!
29:48What's going on?
29:49Final Destination 5 follows the same pattern, featuring yet another group's attempts to escape death,
29:55but meeting their ends in gruesome ways.
29:58The main plot ends as expected, with the survivors planning to leave on a plane to celebrate their supposed victory over death.
30:04Are you kidding me?
30:05You're gonna make me sit in the middle seat?
30:06Uh-huh.
30:07I'm like twice your size.
30:09Not really.
30:09All right.
30:10All right.
30:12Oh my God!
30:14However, it's then that the flight is confirmed to be the one shown in the first movie, meaning that everything that's happened so far has been set up by death to lead to this moment.
30:23Those passengers who got off the plane earlier, what was that all about?
30:28Oh, a kid had a panic attack and wanted off the plane.
30:31He said he had some kind of vision.
30:34No.
30:37Oh my God!
30:40As the plane crashes, the story comes full circle for the franchise, making it symbolic of the circle of life and death.
30:47Number 4. Judgment Day. Terminator 3. Rise of the Machines.
30:53No bombs fell.
30:55Computers didn't take control.
30:59We stopped Judgment Day.
31:01By this point, it was obvious that the series would copy the format of the previous two movies.
31:06Terminator 3 does indeed follow this style, with the titular character now protecting an adult John Connor from another advanced Terminator sent by Skynet.
31:15Are you here to kill me?
31:25No. You must live.
31:27The story is on course for the usual sacrifice by the Terminator, but the final moments take an original twist never seen before in the franchise.
31:35It turns out that Judgment Day could never be prevented, as was always believed, and that Skynet had already initiated nuclear bombs to begin a worldwide massacre.
31:45John, what is he saying?
31:49Judgment Day.
31:52The end of the world.
31:55It's today, three hours from now.
31:58Terminator 3 baits the viewer into a false sense of security to leave fans speechless as the series' promise of a dystopian future finally comes to pass.
32:07This psychological horror story centers around the adoption of a young child whose arrival sparks several incidents.
32:18Orphan is largely formulaic, with obvious signs of young Esther being an evil child.
32:23Then you were just pretending this whole time?
32:27I thought you would enjoy teaching me.
32:29It must be frustrating for someone who loves music as much as you, to have a son who isn't interested and a daughter who can't even hear.
32:37The build-up seems to point toward a clichΓ© turn for the worst from Esther, but the reveal of her true nature comes out of nowhere.
32:46As it turns out, Esther is an adult woman posing as a young girl, meaning her malicious activities were the premeditated actions of a murderer and not a disturbed child.
32:55She only looks like a child.
32:58According to our records, Lena Klammer was born in 1976.
33:03She's 33 years old.
33:05The twist gives the thriller the eerie sense of horror it was going for.
33:09It also makes Orphan a highly rewatchable flick, as it's interesting to go back and find clues for this twist hidden all along.
33:16Go to your room.
33:17Honestly, we're past that now, aren't we?
33:20Number 2.
33:21The Truth About Eli.
33:23The Book of Eli.
33:24The Book of Eli sees the titular character's attempt to preserve the last copy of the Bible, while escaping a warlord who wants the book's knowledge.
33:33It's just staying alive, it's not your faith.
33:35Building this town is an even bigger act of faith, but they don't understand that.
33:40None of them.
33:42And I don't have the right words to help them, but the book does.
33:46This dystopian movie has similarities with the critically acclaimed Mad Max series, but relies on the mystery of its protagonists so much that the action becomes a drag to watch.
33:56However, the closing moments show Eli's been hiding an even bigger secret, as the Bible is written in braille, revealing that Eli was blind the whole time.
34:05The first book of Moses, called Genesis, chapter 1, verse 1.
34:16Having given no obvious clues, the twist places the protagonist's actions in a bigger context, and signs off with an uplifting message.
34:24Eli's journey was always meant to be spiritual, which changes the previously bleak outlook of the film in an instant.

34:56Number 1. The Secret Accomplice, Saw 3D
35:00The seventh movie loses all the nuances and thoughtful commentary from previous entries.
35:06Instead, Saw 3D is a straight-up gore fest that relies completely on the traps.
35:11The flick's plot sees Mark Hoffman simply off everyone in his path and then take down Jigsaw's wife, Jill, out of revenge.
35:19This person will go on killing until he's stopped.
35:22You know him, and he definitely knows you.
35:25Is that right?
35:27He's Detective Mark Hoffman.
35:29However, Dr. Gordon, whose status was never clarified until this film's opening scene,
35:34shows up to attack Hoffman before he can escape.
35:37It's revealed that Gordon was Jigsaw's secret accomplice all along,
35:41meaning he had a hand in everything that happened in the series.
35:45Hello, Dr. Gordon.
35:47You are perhaps my greatest asset.
35:50This ties up all loose ends in one go, and at least gives this by-the-numbers movie
35:56the huge twist fans were looking for.
35:58No!
35:59Game over.
36:01No!
36:02Can you think of any other examples?
36:04Let us know in the comments.
36:06You're my blood.
36:08Only you could have brought me out.
36:11And you're mine.
36:13But you can't be my father.
36:14They took you away from me.
36:17But I made him pay!
