00:00Long before humans ever set foot on it, there existed a lush green island in the Indian Ocean,
00:05Mauritius. Isolated from the rest of the world, this island was a paradise of unique flora and
00:11fauna. Among the many strange and beautiful creatures that thrived there was a flightless
00:16bird, unknown to the world, the dodo. The dodo had no predators. It had evolved in peaceful
00:22isolation, with no reason to fear anything. It had small wings, a large curved beak,
00:28and a plump body. It could not fly, but it didn't need to. In the year 1598, everything changed.
00:35A group of Dutch sailors landed on Mauritius. These sailors, tired and hungry, found the dodo amusing,
00:41easy to catch, and delicious. The bird had never seen humans before, it wasn't afraid. It walked
00:47up to the sailors with curiosity, and was killed in return. The sailors named the bird dodo,
00:53believed to be derived from the Portuguese word dodo, meaning fool, or simpleton. The sailors
00:59brought with them dogs, cats, pigs, rats, and monkeys. These animals quickly spread across the
01:04island, feeding on dodo eggs and destroying its nests. The dodo laid only one egg at a time.
01:10It had no defense mechanism, not against humans, nor against these new predators. In just a few decades,
01:16the dodo population began to collapse. By the late 1600s, the dodo had become a rarity.
01:22No one knew it was disappearing. The last widely accepted sighting of a living dodo was in 1662.
01:28After that, silence. For over a century, people believed it was a myth. But bones, sketches,
01:34and journals slowly revealed the truth. Today, no living dodo exists. Only a few bones in museums,
01:40a handful of drawings, and a name that has come to symbolize extinction. But the story of the dodo
01:45lives on, not just as a tale of loss, but as a lesson. The dodo didn't die because of weakness.
01:50It died because of trust. It died because we didn't know better, or didn't care. Its story
01:56awakened the world to the consequences of human actions. It sparked interest in conservation.
02:02When we forget to respect nature, we lose more than species, we lose parts of ourselves.
