00:00Anderson's 1-2. Got him! 11-game winning streak for your Milwaukee Brewers as they shut out the Mariners 6-0 in Seattle.
00:12From MLB.com, this is the Morning Lineup Podcast. I'm your host, Anthony Kastrovitz.
00:17Today is Tuesday, July 22nd, and it's a day to celebrate the mid-season surges that have led to some unexpected inhabitants of first place in both the NL Central and the AL East.
00:25Speaking of unexpected, a game ended in Philly in a way you've probably never seen before.
00:30And an Orioles reliever had a pitching line that you've definitely never seen before.
00:33We'll cover all of that and more in about 10 minutes or less. Let's get to it!
00:37The Brewers lost on opening day, and the game after that, and the game after that, and the game after that.
00:43They started out 0-4 and had been outscored 47-15.
00:47Parlayed with an uninspiring offseason in which they lost one of their best players in Willie Adamas to free agency and traded one of their best pitchers in Devin Williams,
00:53the odds of an NL Central Championship repeat seemed dim.
00:56But here we are. It's July 22nd, and the Brewers, believe it or else, have the best record in baseball.
01:03The Brewers reported for duty in Seattle on Monday night, coming off their second sweep of the Dodgers this month,
01:08and they were also riding a 10-game winning streak overall.
01:10You know about the Miz, Jacob Mizorowski, and his instant impact on this Brewers pitching staff.
01:14But the Brewers have a fantastic staff top to bottom, with Brandon Woodruff recently returning from shoulder surgery.
01:19They have a lineup that's not loaded with star power, but doesn't have a lot of outright holes either.
01:23And they keep pressure on their opponents with smart, aggressive base running.
01:27We saw it again on Monday night.
01:28In his third start of the season, Woodruff delivered six scoreless innings.
01:32And with the game and a scoreless tie in the top of the six, the Brew crew erupted against Mariner starter George Kirby
01:36with a four-run, five-hit inning highlighted by a double from Jackson Churio.
01:41Later, in a two-run eighth, Christian Jelic reached where Churio drove him in again.
02:00The Brewers' 6-0 win gave them their first 11-game winning streak since 2021.
02:04And more importantly, it pushed them past the Cubs, who got blasted 12-4 by the Royals
02:09and are now a game behind the Brewers in the NL Central.
02:12First-place Brewers.
02:13Best record in baseball.
02:15Un-brew-lievable.
02:17A few weeks back, Blue Jays starter Kevin Gaussman took the social media platform X
02:21and, as one does, posted that he's looking for a flamethrower.
02:25Not like a 105-mile-an-hour fastball-tossing reliever, mind you.
02:28An actual flamethrower.
02:29Turns out Gaussman was looking for the Blaze Blaster for some sort of post-game celebration
02:33that, I have to tell you, Kevin, doesn't sound like your best idea.
02:37It does not appear at this point that Gaussman has acquired a flamethrower,
02:40and we know for sure that Gaussman himself, with his 94-mile-an-hour fastball,
02:43is not a flamethrower by today's lofty standards.
02:45But he is an ace for this first-place Toronto team, and he proved it Monday night at Rogers Center.
02:50Just three weeks after the Jays dramatically swept the Yankees at home
02:53to take over the AL East top spot, the Yanks are already back in town.
02:56And in the opener of a three-game set, Gaussman's seven innings of one-run ball
03:00with eight strikeouts stood out.
03:03And he got him. Strikeout number eight.
03:06Seven great innings for Gaussman.
03:08The Blue Jays were trailing 1-0 in the fifth
03:10when Bo Bichette came up with two runners on and got them going.
03:15And this is hooked to left field, and it's into the corner.
03:19Springer is in to score. Guerrero is getting the wave.
03:22And he'll come in, too. A two-run double for Bichette to give the Blue Jays the lead.
03:27That sparked a four-run inning, and the Jays never looked back in a 4-1 victory.
03:31They now have a four-game lead on the Yankees, have won four in a row overall,
03:35and have now won a franchise record 11 straight games at home.
03:38It has been a stunning mid-season search for this Toronto team,
03:41and it should make the Blue Jays one of the most aggressive teams at the trade deadline.
03:45Maybe they'll even bring in a flamethrower.
03:47Coming up, how did the Phillies win last night?
03:49There's a catch. That's after the break.
03:52Entering Monday's series opener at home against the Red Sox,
03:56the Phillies had dropped three straight series,
03:57putting up pedestrian offensive numbers along the way.
04:00They had Ace and Cy Young hopeful Zach Wheeler on the hill against the Sox,
04:02and he gave them six strong innings.
04:04But they needed something more.
04:06They needed intervention? No.
04:08They needed interruption? No, not that either.
04:10They needed, I know, interference.
04:13It happened, as many fun things do, in extra innings.
04:17It was the bottom of the 10th.
04:18The game was tied at two.
04:19The bases were loaded, and there were none out.
04:21Edmundo Sosa came to bat,
04:22and when Sosa checked his swing on a 1-2 pitch from Jordan Hicks,
04:25the result was something we hadn't seen in decades.
04:29That pitch just a bit outside.
04:31That catcher's interference?
04:32You know, that's a good question.
04:34The Phillies are going to look at it.
04:35Mike Calitri went running off his chair.
04:37After the view, the call on the field is overturned.
04:39There is catcher's interference.
04:40Wow!
04:41The Phillies have won on a catcher's interference!
04:44I'll tag your bags.
04:44Baseball is amazing!
04:47Because Sosa's bat nicked Carlos Narvaez's outstretched glove,
04:50the Phillies, with the 3-2 victory,
04:53became the first team to win a game on a walk-off catcher's interference
04:56since the Dodgers' Willie Crawford drew an interference call
04:59against Hall of Famer Johnny Bench in an August 1st, 1971 victory over the Reds.
05:04That wasn't the only bizarre historic happening Monday night.
05:08How about this line from Orioles reliever Corbin Martin in Cleveland?
05:12One inning, one hit, one run earned, one walk, one strikeout, one home run,
05:17one hit by pitch, and one ball.
05:19All ones.
05:20It was the only time someone has recorded that pitching line
05:23since earned runs became an official stat in 1913.
05:26Truly, one of a kind.
05:28It was also part of a losing effort,
05:29as Jose Ramirez reached the 20-homer, 20-steal milestone
05:32for the 7th time in his career in the Guardians' 10-5 win.
05:35The only players with more 20-homer, 20-steal seasons
05:37were Barry and Bobby Bonds with 10 apiece
05:39and Bobby Abreu with 9.
05:41Speaking of historic performances, how about Paul Skeens?
05:44He went 6-score list and a 3-0 win over the Tigers at PNC Park
05:47to lower his ERA to 1.91.
05:49That's the best among MLB qualifiers by 28 points.
05:53In his career, Skeens now has a 1.94 ERA,
05:55the lowest in the live ball era for a pitcher through 44 career starts.
06:00Elsewhere in MLB on Monday,
06:01in just his fifth MLB game,
06:03Astros rookie Bryce Matthews hit his first home run
06:05and then added another in a 6-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
06:08Arizona trade candidate Eugenio Suarez
06:10went deep for the fifth time in the last three games.
06:13The beauty of being Shohei Ohtani
06:15is you can give up a leadoff home run to Byron Buxton
06:17in the top of the first inning,
06:19but then hit a home run yourself,
06:20a two-run shot to be exact,
06:22in the bottom of the first.
06:23The last pitcher to give up and hit a homer
06:25in the first inning of a game
06:26was the Phillies' Randy Lurch way back in 1979.
06:29Ohtani did it in a 5-2 win over the Twins.
06:32The Mets brought catcher Francisco Alvarez back up from AAA
06:35and he doubled and scored two runs
06:37in a 7-5 win over the Angels.
06:39The Padres improved to 10 games over .500
06:41with their 2-1 win over the Marlins.
06:43The Ronald Acuna Jr. show continued in Atlanta
06:46where Acuna's mad dash from first to home
06:48on a Drake Baldwin single
06:49was a jaw-dropping moment
06:51in the Braves' 9-5 win over the Reeling Giants.
06:53Not only do the Royals beat up on the Cubs,
06:55but they're reportedly going to make fans of a certain age happy
06:58by calling up 45-year-old Rich Hill.
07:01That's all for the morning lineup today,
07:02but here's a fun one for you tonight.
07:04The Brewers will put their 11-game winning streak on the line
07:07with the aforementioned Miz,
07:08Jacob Mizorowski,
07:10on the mound in Seattle
07:11in a 9-40 Eastern Time,
07:126-40 local time game against the Mariners.
07:15This will be the Miz's first start
07:16since his stellar scoreless inning in the All-Star game,
07:18and he'll be going up against 2024 All-Star Logan Gilbert.
07:21You can also check out the MLB.tv free game of the day
07:23when the Diamondbacks host the Astros
07:25at 9-40 Eastern, 6-40 local.
07:27Matt Monaghan will be back tomorrow
07:28to recap all that and more.
