Joe 'The Pro' Ferguson and Dan Parker run through the five shots every golfer needs to score well on the course while offering some useful tips on how to play them successfully.
Transcript
00:00Joe, I've been thinking a lot about golf recently, as I always do.
00:04Aside from the stock shots we always go and practice, right?
00:06There's a lot of shots that appear on the golf course that you never practice
00:10but that are really vital to keeping a round going and keeping a score going.
00:13Does that seem fair?
00:15I would say that's fair. There's some essential skills you need to master to be good at golf.
00:19Should we go and find some out on the course today and help some people out?
00:22Let's do it.
00:30Well, there comes points in rounds, doesn't there, and this is a good example here.
00:33We're on the 17th hole at Kedleston Park, got a good round going,
00:36and I'm looking down the fairway and there's a lot of trouble either side.
00:39Left and right, it's very tree-lined, isn't it?
00:41It is very tree-lined, but it could be a really good opportunity
00:43because it's a short-ish par-5 if we can find the fairway.
00:46So, aside from your normal stock drive that you might hit and practice all the time,
00:50I think it's really important to have a fairway-finding shot, if you like,
00:55and I'm going to demonstrate mine to you.
00:57There are other ways which we might get into in a second,
01:00but I'm just going to demonstrate what I do when I really need to hit a fairway.
01:03Okay, go on.
01:04A couple of little things I change at setup.
01:06Firstly, I peg the ball down just a little bit.
01:09Why do you do that?
01:10When I'm pegged up a lot, it helps me sweep up on the ball
01:13and maybe hit from the inside of it and get a nice, powerful draw.
01:17That can increase my dispersion a little bit, so when it's pegged down,
01:20my attack angle comes down a little bit and I start to sort of squeeze a little fade out
01:26and then I know the ball is going to turn from left to right.
01:29So that gives me the confidence to aim just a little bit left,
01:32knowing the ball is going to squeeze out a little bit.
01:35And then from there, all I do is choke down on the club about half an inch.
01:39I stand a tiny bit closer to the ball because of that.
01:42So because I'm closer to the ball, I've got a better chance of centering the contact.
01:46I've then narrowed my stance a tiny bit.
01:48So I've got a slightly smaller radius of swing from the choking down
01:52and a slightly tighter swing radius from having a slightly narrower stance.
01:56So all that's kind of doing, it's inhibiting my speed a little bit admittedly.
02:00So I'm taking a little bit off it, but exactly that's okay for this shot.
02:03The priority here is finding the fairway.
02:05And you're more assured of what shot shape you're going to get.
02:08100%.
02:09So you can know where to aim and where to find the fairway.
02:11Absolutely.
02:12And just pegging it down really helps me know that this ball is going to squeeze from left to right.
02:16So it gives me the confidence to aim up the left.
02:18So I'll choke down again, like I said.
02:19Show us the way then, son.
02:20Half an inch.
02:22I'm aiming just inside that tree there, slightly narrower stance than normal.
02:26And I'm just going to make my smooth little golf swing.
02:30Now it's going to bleed off that tree nicely.
02:32Just inside it perfectly.
02:35That's a good example.
02:37So really tight.
02:38So really tight.
02:39So it's just past that tree.
02:40And now I'm in really good shape to make a birdie.
02:45Right then, Joe.
02:46Found you in your spiritual home.
02:47The trees.
02:48Bit harsh, but yes.
02:49Probably accurate.
02:50I know we just talked about fairway finders.
02:52Obviously sometimes you miss that.
02:53And this is a shot, the punch out from the trees, that you just never, well I don't anyway,
02:58practice, do you?
02:59You don't go to the range and start punching five irons off your back foot or whatever.
03:02I see a lot of complacency on this shot.
03:04And I play a lot of pro-ams and play a lot of guys who sort of walk into this scenario
03:08and just see it as a nominal shunt forward.
03:10Correct.
03:11But it's actually far more complicated than a shot from the middle of the fairway
03:14where you're thinking about your yardage and the wind.
03:16There's actually a lot more going on here to think about.
03:18Don't you think?
03:19So let's do strategy first then.
03:20And we'll come onto execution in a minute and how to practice it.
03:22So let's talk about this situation we found ourselves in.
03:24Yeah.
03:25It's pretty standard.
03:26So I've cut it too much off this tee.
03:27I'm in the right trees, but it's, like I said, a little bit more complex.
03:31We've got the green is actually over there behind this set of trees.
03:34Yeah.
03:35But I've got the fairway here to the left and I've got a couple of options.
03:38To the right of this big oak tree there, I've probably got a five or six yard gap.
03:42Can't see that, do you?
03:43It's doable in the right situation, but is it at a percentage play?
03:47Probably not.
03:48Even if I hit that gap from a width point of view, there's some overhanging limbs further up that I've got to keep it under.
03:54Yes.
03:55And I'm only really gaining around 20 to 30 yards.
03:57So I think in this scenario, it'd be more prudent to go through this larger gap to the left.
04:02We've still got some issues there, though, to think about.
04:05And I always start with a line.
04:06Whenever you get to a shot, you've got to assess what is possible from the line.
04:10I've got a reasonably clean line here, so I can think of a lot to do.
04:13We've got some quite hard panned stuff, which you tend to find in these trees,
04:17which we'll talk about in the execution in a minute.
04:19But this is a very different shot to that, for example.
04:24So you've got to work out where you are first.
04:26So you've got to work out where you are and work out what's possible.
04:28We're going to base it on a reasonably clean line here.
04:31So the next thing you need to think about is how much you've got to carry
04:35and how much run out you've got the other side.
04:37And that will determine the club that you're going to pick.
04:40So you've told me before that you quite often just walk in,
04:42you take your least lofted iron, your five iron?
04:44It's always five iron.
04:45It's just I go, yeah, five iron, whatever.
04:47But when that happens, if this rough is quite thick, which it is here, it's quite grabby,
04:51you've got to get that five iron carrying that rough.
04:54Otherwise, you're going to stop in the rough here, not have a shot to that green
04:57because these trees will impinge you.
04:59But if you carry that rough, it's going to hit that fairway and keep running and running and running
05:04and possibly run into the trees the other side.
05:06So I need to know here, I've got these over that I've got to keep it under because if it pops up too high
05:11and I pull out a nine iron or an eight iron, pops up too high, clips that, it's going to land there
05:15and I'm still in the same problem.
05:16So I've got to pick the right club that's going to give me enough carries to get past this rough
05:19but stay under those trees.
05:20And from experience, I feel that's a six iron for me.
05:23So you've got to weigh up where you want to be playing your next shot from.
05:27There's a lot to think about.
05:28Like I said, it's far more complex than just a shot from the middle of the fairway
05:31but people treat it like just a nothing shot and just walk up and shunt it and can still be in trouble.
05:36So it's really key to give it the attention it deserves.
05:39Pick the right club and pick your right strategy.
05:42Sorry, Joe, it turned out impinged was a word.
05:44I knew it was.
05:45So I've learnt a word, now teach us how to play this shot.
05:47Good idea, Dad. Good segue.
05:49So first things first, from a technical point of view, this shot's all about coaching.
05:52And controlling the flight.
05:54So the first thing I always like to do is choke down on the club.
05:57And it will always depend on the type of shot we're trying to play.
06:00All of these punch outs are different and they should be treated differently.
06:03They should be treated individually.
06:05If I had a little bit further to go, I might need to choke up a little bit more than I normally would for this shot
06:11because I need a bit more carry.
06:12So experience and practice is going to teach you that.
06:15Secondly, visualisation is a big key here.
06:18I need to get behind this.
06:19I need to look and I need to see the ball fly.
06:21I need to play a little picture in my mind of how this ball is going to take off.
06:25And then with my eyes and get that good message through my eyes to my brain,
06:29that should send the signals which put me in a good set up position.
06:32Yeah, that makes sense.
06:33Yeah, I like that.
06:34So it should be an athletic thing.
06:35So once you've got that visualisation of where you need to go,
06:37we've choked down on the club.
06:39The ball is going to be a little bit back because I need to keep it down here.
06:42How far back do you have it?
06:43It looks like front, back heel.
06:45Again, it's all shot dependent.
06:46People want kind of absolutes for these shots.
06:48Yes, please.
06:49No.
06:50But unfortunately, golf isn't an absolute kind of thing.
06:52If I need to carry it a little bit further, the ball is going to be slightly forward than this shot
06:56where I need to keep it very, very low.
06:57So how far forward and backwards in the stance it is depends on what shot.
07:01How far you need to carry it.
07:02How far I need to carry it.
07:03How much room you have up here.
07:04How much room I have beneath those trees.
07:06So for this particular shot, and that's why we're saying you need to practice these shots.
07:10It will seem odd that say you're going to go to the practice ground and hit bumps and punches
07:14and practice your punch out game, but it is key and it will save you shots.
07:18So if you start to understand your ball position relative to certain flights,
07:22it's going to really help you in this situation.
07:24And that's what I mean about your eyes will start to send the right messages to your brain
07:28and that set up will become more automatic.
07:30I've learnt a bit, show us how it's done.
07:32I'm going to grab a club.
07:36Well executed, sir.
07:38And that is going to go...
07:40That's good.
07:42Deep enough in the fairway.
07:43Just for the record, we hit a ball early.
07:45You just hit that ball.
07:46So Ty, she's done the exact same shot.
07:48You're welcome.
07:49It's carried far enough to go under those branches, but far enough so you can go and hit the green.
07:52I'm going to have a go now because you've taught me a lot today.
07:54You're choking down.
07:55I've pulled the six iron.
07:56You've seen the shot.
07:57I've sent messages to my brain.
07:59And you've sent the right messages because that's just made the fairway.
08:02You're in good shape.
08:03Not my finest, but again, I've got to go practice that.
08:04So, hey, I've got the fundamentals now.
08:05Go and practice it.
08:06It's a really useful shot to have.
08:08All right, next up, Joe.
08:09Really important shot.
08:10It's the chip and run.
08:11The bump and run.
08:12Now, I think we get it a lot on the golf course.
08:13I think a lot of people do practice this, but it's an essential shot.
08:15It's going to save you a lot of shots if you get up and down.
08:17How do we perfect it?
08:18How do we practice it?
08:19The floor is yours.
08:20Thank you, Dan.
08:21That's very kind.
08:22There are a couple of ways of doing it.
08:23And I've got a simple way, I think.
08:24Someone like a Shane Lowry might disagree with this.
08:25So Shane Lowry, for example, he's a guy that likes to play all of these shots around the
08:29green with his 58-degree wedge.
08:30And he makes a lot of technical changes.
08:31He makes a lot of technical changes.
08:32He makes a lot of technical changes.
08:33He makes a lot of technical changes.
08:34He makes a lot of technical changes.
08:35He makes a lot of technical changes.
08:36Putting the ball back, hands forward, changing things around to produce different flights
08:39and different outcomes.
08:40My personal opinion on it, and a lot of other pros, we've got a bag full of clubs here.
08:44We've got potentially 10, 11, even 12 clubs we could play bumper mums with.
08:47Yeah.
08:48And we've got a lot of fun.
08:49It's a lot of fun.
08:50It's a lot of fun.
08:51It's fun.
08:52It's fun.
08:53It's fun.
08:54It's fun.
08:55It's fun.
08:56It's fun.
08:57It's fun.
08:58It's fun.
08:59It's fun.
09:00It's fun.
09:01It's fun.
09:02It's fun.
09:03It's fun.
09:04It's fun.
09:05It's fun.
09:06It's fun.
09:07It's fun.
09:08It's fun.
09:09It's fun.
09:10It's fun.
09:11It's fun.
09:12Not many outside times that it comes with, including 3-wood, for example.
09:13So, what I like to do, I have a formula in my brain.
09:14I like to, number one, my key to get the ball on the green, as quickly as possible,
09:15and get it rolling as quickly as possible.
09:18So, to do that you need to know what clubsquing is going to produce the right amount of carry
09:22to get it just on the green, and then produce the right amount roll.
09:24So, I kind of work on a formula basis.
09:27I like to have a 50-50 club, which I know in normal conditions, flat conditions,
09:32on around a 10 stimp green,
09:34will provide me with 50% of carry and 50% of roll.
09:38For me, that's my pitching wedge.
09:40Then I can work in the variables around that.
09:43If the green's firmer,
09:44those percentages might change a little bit.
09:46So from there, then your 9-iron, a 60-40.
09:49Correct.
09:49Sorry, 40-60 and so on?
09:51Basically, yeah.
09:53So it's actually the other way.
09:54So 9-iron is less loft,
09:56so it would be 40% carry and 60% roll.
09:59Keep up, Dad.
09:59Thank you, Professor Hawkins.
10:00You're very welcome.
10:01So from there, like I say,
10:03we factor in the variables
10:04whether the greens are firm,
10:05whether the greens are soft,
10:06whether we're going uphill,
10:07whether we're going downhill.
10:09But as I said, number one key,
10:10get the ball on the green
10:11as quickly as possible and get it rolling.
10:12And it's worth then for people watching,
10:14going and practising and figuring out
10:15what your 50-50 club is
10:16or what your 40-60 club is.
10:18It's going to be different to yours, isn't it?
10:19Absolutely.
10:20It could well be,
10:20but I'd say that's the key is practising that
10:22because the technique,
10:23which we'll talk about now,
10:25isn't actually that complicated.
10:26It's a fairly,
10:27I like to think of it as just an extended putt.
10:30So what we're talking about here,
10:31I have a ball that's fairly centred,
10:33maybe even just slightly forward in my stance.
10:35Okay.
10:36I try and keep the shaft pitched up
10:38a little bit higher,
10:39sort of more in the lie angle of a putter.
10:41And then it's literally
10:42just a rock of the shoulders.
10:43And I'm trying to get this club
10:44just coming in dead level with the ground
10:46and brushing the turf.
10:47I don't want any sort of pinchy strikes
10:49when I'm taking divot.
10:50Joe, show us this.
10:51Why have you picked eight iron?
10:52I'm going to have a go as well, actually.
10:53Talk us through it.
10:54Eight iron-wise,
10:55so I'm looking here
10:56and I'm thinking
10:56we've probably got about
10:5820 to 25% of carry here
11:01and then maybe 75, 80% of roll.
11:04Okay.
11:04Going up quite a steep slope,
11:06but we've played on these greens today
11:07and they're relatively quick.
11:09So it's an experience thing
11:11and that's where the practice has to come in.
11:13Yeah.
11:13As I said,
11:14it's not necessarily
11:15you need to be grooving
11:16a lot of technical practice
11:17with the bump and run
11:18because it's quite a simple technique.
11:20It's more understanding
11:21those relationships
11:21between what club you pick
11:23and what roll and carry percentage
11:25it will take.
11:26Very good.
11:26For me here,
11:27based on my experience,
11:28I fancy eight ironing
11:29is the right club
11:30and I'm not looking at necessarily
11:31an exact blade of grass or something.
11:33I'm just looking at an area
11:34which is around
11:35two to three feet on the green.
11:37Try and land it in that area
11:38and get it rolling
11:39the rest of the way.
11:40And like I said,
11:41nice neutral stance.
11:44Look at my landing area.
11:45Rock my shoulders.
11:46Get it just going
11:48two or three feet on the green.
11:49That's barely, yeah.
11:49And that's just going to
11:50cuddle up pin high.
11:52Pushed it a little bit
11:52but it's dead pin high
11:53so I've probably got, what,
11:54four or five feet there for par.
11:56Yeah.
11:57It's eight out of ten
11:57but it's a very safe,
11:59fail-safe shot.
12:00Interesting.
12:00And this is just something,
12:01again,
12:02get yourself to the chipping green
12:03and practice
12:03because it's a shot
12:04I don't practice with an eight iron
12:05or whatever club
12:06you might have used.
12:07So once you've got that formula
12:09you've just said,
12:10go and practice it
12:10because you can work out
12:11the relationship
12:12with the ball and the face
12:13how quick it comes off.
12:14Okay, so,
12:15a little bit central,
12:16bit of shaft vertical.
12:17Just brush the grass.
12:20Lovely.
12:21Three or four feet on.
12:22Steady now.
12:23You've absolutely
12:24showed me up there.
12:24I've nailed that.
12:25Steady now.
12:26I'm inside the pro.
12:27I'm inside the pro
12:28below the hole as well, mate.
12:29Well, I mean,
12:30it's a good shot.
12:30It just shows
12:31what an excellent teacher I am.
12:32What a great teacher you are.
12:33So take all of that there,
12:34go practice it,
12:35go work out that ratio,
12:36the relationship with the ball
12:37with some of these
12:37different irons around here
12:39and you'll be up and down
12:40more often than not.
12:45Next then, Joe,
12:47on the green putting.
12:48And now I'm going to give us
12:49something pretty basic here,
12:50but it's something that
12:51you need to master,
12:52you need to get right,
12:53practice it alongside
12:53everything else.
12:54It's just holding out
12:55from really short range.
12:57How do we do it?
12:59I put more in the hole,
13:00obviously.
13:01I meant more,
13:02how do we practice it?
13:03The process of getting
13:04better at it,
13:05I assume,
13:06is what you're asking here.
13:07That's what I'm getting at.
13:08So, yeah,
13:08I mean,
13:08it's something,
13:09again,
13:09I see it a lot
13:10playing in pro-ams,
13:12playing with amateur partners,
13:12miss a lot from this range
13:14and I think
13:14there's a couple of things
13:16I'd like to talk about.
13:16Number one,
13:18there's just some
13:18fundamental technical issues
13:20and one of those
13:21technical issues
13:21I think is centering strike.
13:24Okay.
13:24I see so many people
13:25hitting off the heel,
13:26toe,
13:26low or high on the face
13:27and what happens
13:28when that takes place
13:30is the ball doesn't come off
13:31at the pace
13:32it's supposed to
13:33and if you've got
13:33a breaking putt,
13:35it can veer offline
13:36because it's not going
13:36to have enough momentum
13:37to stay online
13:38because you don't have
13:38the same energy
13:39from strike.
13:40Also,
13:41on sort of less high
13:42MOI putters,
13:43heel and toe strikes
13:44can kind of open
13:45and close the face
13:46a little bit
13:47so it's really important
13:47to get centred contact
13:48and one of the best drills
13:49for that
13:50is the Tiger Woods drill
13:52you might have seen
13:53a few times over the years
13:54so he does it
13:54as part of his warm up
13:56all the time
13:57when he's playing
13:58just getting a couple
13:59of tee pegs
14:00probably best to start
14:02with a little bit
14:02of margin for error
14:03You've given yourself
14:04no margin for error there
14:05but you are the pro
14:05I've been a bit tight
14:06on myself here
14:07and it's just simply
14:08find a nice straight putt
14:10and start stroking putts
14:11and trying to miss
14:12those tees
14:13so we're centering contact
14:14and that's just
14:15really good habit
14:16it's part of
14:17whether it's part of
14:18practice
14:18or warm up
14:19or both
14:19just learning to
14:21centre that contact
14:22is absolutely critical
14:23and I would
14:24heartily recommend
14:26a good 5 or 10 minutes
14:26a day on that
14:27and that's
14:28you like to talk about
14:29the computer up here
14:30and I think seeing the ball
14:31go in the hole a lot
14:32whether that's before
14:33a round or practicing
14:34it's good vibes
14:35it's subliminal messaging
14:36gives confidence
14:37and gives everything
14:38you need to say
14:38and that works
14:38on longer putts as well
14:39just striking the putt
14:40100%
14:41so it helps your hole in
14:42sorry go on mate
14:42so yeah another one
14:43on that
14:44if you do want to do it
14:45from further away
14:45another one of my drills
14:47I do a bit with a putting mirror
14:48another one I like to set up
14:49maybe double this
14:50maybe 6 feet
14:51find a straight uphill putt
14:54relatively flat putt
14:55with no break
14:55and I like to practice
14:57hitting 3 balls
14:58one that's going to just
14:59drop in the front edge
15:00at no pace
15:01the next putt
15:02that's going to go in
15:02at sort of a more
15:03mid level pace
15:03and make sure the next one
15:05hits off the back of the cup
15:06and then work up and down
15:07that scale
15:07then you're really
15:08fine tuning your feel
15:10and when you've got the option
15:11of hitting it in at pace
15:12or dropping it in
15:13you can pick the break
15:15you want to play
15:15a little bit more easily
15:16if it's a breaking putt
15:18so you're really
15:18again sending good messages
15:19and fine tuning
15:20your touch and feel
15:21and while we're talking
15:22about breaking putts
15:23my next tip
15:24for practice on these
15:25is something
15:26I'm going to get you involved
15:27go on then
15:27I'm going to make you do it
15:28so another reason
15:29I see a lot of amateurs
15:30missing short putts
15:31is they just assume
15:32every putt's straight
15:33you get close
15:33and think well
15:34if I hit it firm enough
15:35it's straight enough
15:36that's just not the case
15:37it's a good example here
15:38we're on probably
15:39for the aim pointers
15:40amongst those
15:41probably a 2% slope here
15:43from our left
15:45to right down here
15:47so a really good way
15:48of practicing these
15:48short putts
15:49is if you get a standard
15:50length putter
15:51generally sort of
15:5233 to 36 inches
15:54around the 3 foot mark
15:55so you can grab a few
15:57tee pegs
15:58and set up a little
15:59clock face
15:59put the putt out in the hole
16:01drop a tee down
16:02at the end of it
16:03you've got 3 feet
16:04drop another tee
16:04I see where you're going
16:05you can do 4
16:07you can do quarters
16:09and just keep dropping
16:10those round
16:10in a different area
16:11I'm going to set you up
16:123 here
16:13and I'm going to go
16:14this way
16:14so what you'll do here
16:17is you're going to get
16:18these 3 foot putts
16:18but they're all going to
16:19be different breaks
16:20this one's going to have
16:21a touch of right to left
16:23in it
16:23from this side
16:24we're going to have
16:25a touch of left to right
16:26we've got a downhiller
16:27just changing the pace
16:27a little bit
16:28from the one we would
16:28have had down there
16:29exactly
16:29and what you'll do
16:30is you hit some putts
16:31away for me here
16:32I'll get the balls
16:33out for you
16:33but what you'll do
16:35as you're sort of
16:36going through this drill
16:37lovely putt
16:38now give me a downhiller
16:39you'll start to
16:40eventually over time
16:42you'll figure out
16:43some tendencies
16:44and you'll notice
16:45maybe you're better
16:46on right to left
16:46or left to right putts
16:47because we were
16:48doing this before
16:49we filmed this now
16:50and I was just
16:51pulling these
16:52the ones I did
16:53along the brain
16:53you've been able
16:54to correct that
16:54a little bit
16:55as we're going along
16:55so you'll start
16:56to notice some tendencies
16:57you'll identify
16:58some weaknesses
16:59and if you're really careful
17:00someone like a
17:01Matt Fitzpatrick
17:02would document
17:02some of these things
17:04and write down
17:05this practice
17:05and go okay
17:06I've missed X amount
17:07right or left of the hole
17:09and you can begin
17:09to work on those tendencies
17:10so getting a bit more
17:11clinical and statistical
17:13with practice
17:14from this range
17:14if you can get sharp
17:16from here
17:16and get your percentages
17:17up in the 90s
17:18from this range
17:20it is huge
17:21for most club golfers
17:21so I think those
17:22are really good ways
17:23of making that happen
17:23love them Joe
17:24two really good drills
17:25there to work on
17:26what is a fundamental
17:27part of the game
17:28you need to get right
17:28to get your scores lower
17:29right
17:34last year Joe
17:35we're in a bunker
17:35and what I want to talk
17:36about here
17:37is just
17:37a fail safe
17:39get out of the bunker
17:40option
17:40a lot of people
17:41are scared of bunkers
17:42we're on the 17th
17:43here
17:43you don't want to ruin
17:44a round by knifing
17:45one through
17:45so we're going to talk
17:46here about just
17:47a fail safe
17:48thought and technique
17:50not necessarily
17:50just to get up and down
17:51all the time
17:52and nip one in there
17:53it's just to even
17:54get up and two putt
17:55and not mess it up
17:56so give us
17:57some nice thoughts
17:58to have when we're
17:59on the course
17:59I think this is
18:00a really good example
18:01you've picked a good
18:01shot here as well
18:02because we're short-sided
18:04we hit it in the left
18:05bunker
18:05the pin's on the left
18:06the green's all
18:07running away
18:07so with the best
18:09will in the world
18:09even if you're one
18:10of the better
18:10bunker players
18:11in golf
18:11this is a really
18:13tricky one
18:13to get up and down
18:14so primarily
18:14target number one
18:16is be out of this trap
18:17and have a putt
18:18of some description
18:19for par
18:20target number one
18:20take the target
18:21out of it
18:22yeah
18:22should we just remove
18:23that entirely
18:23if we can
18:24I would agree with that
18:25yeah very much so
18:25we're not even
18:26focusing on the pin
18:27here
18:27all our focus is
18:28getting the correct
18:29strike on this ball
18:30so it pops out
18:31the bunker
18:31and we're taking
18:32no more than three
18:33we always talk about
18:34getting up and down
18:35but sometimes three
18:36shots from particular
18:37situations is good
18:38and this is it
18:39and for me from a
18:40technique point of
18:40view a fail safe
18:42way of doing that
18:43I like to envisage
18:44and I'll draw it now
18:45for illustration purposes
18:46a little circle
18:47around the ball
18:48so it's about an
18:49inch and a half
18:50probably either side
18:51of the ball
18:52so it ends up
18:53looking a bit like
18:53a fried egg
18:54and that ball's sat
18:55on a little island
18:55in the middle
18:56of that circle
18:56and again
18:57you're talking about
18:58taking the target
18:59out of your
19:00sort of
19:01consciousness
19:02I want to take
19:03the ball out
19:04of consciousness
19:04here
19:05all I am focusing
19:06on here
19:07is slapping
19:08this little island
19:09of sand
19:09that I've created
19:10and I want to
19:11land this sand
19:12by the hole
19:13okay
19:14so many people
19:14I see get a bit
19:15tentative in this
19:16scenario
19:17and that you see
19:18where that sand
19:18landed about here
19:19yeah
19:19we don't get enough
19:20speed
19:21speed is underrated
19:22in bunkers
19:22you need it
19:23to get out
19:24so we're actually
19:24going to hit this
19:25shot quite hard
19:26but to counteract
19:27that
19:27and you've heard
19:28it a million times
19:29the clubface
19:30needs to be a little
19:31bit open
19:31if we're too square
19:32you get too much
19:33clubface on the ball
19:34and that's when you
19:34send it rocketing
19:35over there
19:35so we're going to
19:36open up the clubface
19:37that activates the
19:38trailing edge
19:39so the club will go in
19:40at the back of this
19:41island
19:41and it will have
19:42the pace
19:43and the bounce
19:43to come back out
19:44and the ball
19:45should travel out
19:46not focusing on ball
19:47not focusing on target
19:49just going to take
19:50my normal wide stance
19:51open up that clubface
19:52and all I want to do
19:53like I said
19:54is slap that sand
19:55slap that sand
19:57and throw it up
19:58to the pin
19:58it's come out great
19:59it's run on
20:00a little bit far
20:00so what
20:01we've kind of
20:02eight foot from there
20:02that's a really good result
20:04I'd have taken
20:0425 feet
20:06if I'm telling you
20:06that's it
20:07you've hit a really
20:07good bunker shot there
20:08it's still got
20:09eight foot past
20:09you try and get
20:10too cute with that
20:10trying to make up
20:11and down
20:12your back in here
20:12aren't you
20:12and you're facing
20:13the same thing again
20:14so we're just going
20:14to get it out
20:15and take it from there
20:16what are you doing here
20:17I'm here to experiment
20:19so we've had
20:20that's a nice fail safe
20:21one when you've got
20:21a good lie
20:22can I just give you
20:24a bit of a
20:24one of them
20:25wow
20:25just a bit of a fried egg
20:27yeah that's
20:27deeply unpleasant
20:29actually
20:29so I need another
20:30fail safe option here
20:31I need something
20:32I can fall back on
20:33when I'm out on the course
20:34and I'm panicking
20:34perfect
20:35so number one here
20:36this ball is now sat
20:37below the surface level
20:38of the sand
20:39so we know
20:39we need to have the club
20:40under the ball
20:41to propel the ball up
20:42so so many people
20:43see this and think
20:44it's going to come out
20:44low and horrible
20:45and try and help
20:46up in the air
20:46worst thing you can
20:47possibly do
20:48you're bringing the equator
20:49into play there
20:49and you are going to be
20:51sending a rocket through
20:52into those trees there
20:53contrary to the first shot here
20:55you still need the pace
20:57but I'm not too worried
20:58about throwing the sand
20:59all the way here
20:59my first thought
21:01whenever I'm plugged
21:02is to drill the club
21:04into the sand
21:05as hard and as steep
21:06as I can
21:07and I try and
21:08leave it there
21:09so I stick it in
21:10so it will look a little
21:11something like
21:11that
21:12yeah
21:13the sand does come out
21:14and propels it
21:14with a lot of pace
21:15but it just makes sure
21:17that I'm keeping
21:18that club travelling
21:18downwards downwards
21:20downwards under the ball
21:21and you actually need
21:22to hit down
21:22to make it go up
21:23not up to make it go up
21:24so same again
21:25fairly wide stance
21:26generally speaking
21:28I open the club up
21:29a little bit still
21:30some people recommend
21:31playing it with a square face
21:32I was going to say
21:32do you want to try and
21:33bring that leading edge
21:33in a little bit
21:34yeah I think maybe
21:35if we're talking
21:35maybe the mid to high
21:36handicap ender of the spectrum
21:38yeah
21:38I think that would be useful
21:39you probably would
21:40just square it up
21:41a little bit
21:41to ensure
21:41the leading edge
21:42will help you dig
21:43under the ball
21:44if you've got a bit more speed
21:45and you're a little bit
21:46more accomplished
21:46you can still open
21:48the face up a little bit
21:49so depending on your
21:51your level of ability
21:52that's probably something
21:53to think about
21:53we're just talking
21:54fail safe here
21:55so I'm going to square it up
21:56and I just want to make
21:57sure this gets out
21:58so I'm square
21:59square blade
22:00I'm looking at that
22:01little line behind the ball
22:01and I'm just going to dig
22:03stick it in there
22:04come out lovely
22:06oh
22:06but you can see
22:09how much deeper
22:09that divot is
22:10I've just stuck it in
22:11and the club
22:11barely moved past
22:12so just concentrate on that
22:14drill the club under the ball
22:15and I think that's a pretty
22:16fail safe way
22:17that the ball will get out
22:18every time
22:19brilliant
22:19great work Joe
22:20there's two fail safe
22:21swing thoughts
22:22and feelings to have there
22:23when you get a bit nervy
22:24toward the end of your round
22:24you get in a bunker
22:25you don't like the look of
22:26get up
22:27if you hold one of those putts
22:28great
22:29two putt in there
22:30is fine as well
22:31so Joe
22:31thank you very much
22:32great work today
22:33I'd take both of them
22:34you'd take both of them
22:34good work today
22:35go practice these shots
22:37go work on this stuff
22:38alongside your normal game
22:40if you get these shots
22:41you spoke about today right
22:42your score's going to come down
22:43aren't they Joe
22:43100% yeah
22:44100%
22:45these basics will stand you
22:46in very good stead
22:46well thank you for watching
22:47I hope you enjoyed it
22:48see you next time
