00:00Plant Parts!
00:08What's green and found all over?
00:11Nope, not money.
00:13In this video, we're talking about plants.
00:16Plants are everywhere.
00:18In the forest,
00:20in your neighborhood,
00:22in the country,
00:24on mountains,
00:26on farms,
00:28in your schoolyard,
00:30even in the sidewalk cracks in the city.
00:32A plant can be an apple tree,
00:34the grass on your soccer field,
00:36flowers in the flower pot in your kitchen,
00:38even that catnip your cat goes crazy for.
00:42That's a type of plant.
00:44We eat plants.
00:46They provide us with oxygen.
00:48They feed animals.
00:50Plants provide decorations.
00:52They're even used to make clothing,
00:54backpacks and other household items.
00:56They're inside,
00:58they're inside,
01:00outside,
01:02on rooftops,
01:04on golf courses,
01:06and just about everywhere.
01:08When you bite into an apple,
01:10have some bread,
01:12eat that pasta,
01:14quench your thirst with some orange or pineapple juice,
01:18eat those chips,
01:20or have that cookie.
01:22You're eating or drinking plants.
01:24Without plants,
01:26animals like you and me,
01:28including all the wildlife in the world,
01:30wouldn't be able to survive.
01:32So let's start with the basics.
01:34What exactly are plants?
01:36What do they do?
01:38And what are they made of?
01:40Plants are living organisms like you and me
01:42that need several essential things to survive.
01:46Water,
01:48air,
01:49light,
01:50and nutrients from the soil.
01:52They also reproduce like all other living things.
01:54Every plant starts out as a seed.
01:56A seed is either planted in the soil by people,
02:00blown there by wind,
02:02or brought there by an animal.
02:04When a seed takes root in the ground,
02:06it uses that soil's nutrients to start to grow.
02:10Tiny holes in the seeds are called pores,
02:12and they drink in the nutrients and the water
02:14that the plant will need to continue to thrive.
02:17When the seed breaks open and a plant emerges,
02:20it will extend upward towards the sun or a source of light.
02:24As it grows,
02:26different parts of the plant will start to show,
02:28and eventually that plant will create seeds of its own.
02:31And the process will start all over again.
02:34The various parts that make plants
02:36are not that different from our own bodies,
02:38in the sense that every part of a plant
02:40serves a specific function.
02:42Your blood carries oxygen around your body,
02:46from your heart to your brain.
02:48Your lungs breathe air in and out.
02:52Your stomach digests your food.
02:56Your skin protects your body.
02:58Plants have their own parts,
03:01such as their roots, their stems, their leaves, and their flowers.
03:05And they all have their own unique purpose.
03:07Each small part of the plant plays a vital role
03:11in making sure the plant survives and thrives.
03:13Here are the basic parts of every plant.
03:17the roots, the stem, the leaves, the flowers, the fruits and the seeds.
03:31Of course, we know that the roots are underground,
03:33and are the first part of the plant to grow out of the seed.
03:37But what do roots do?
03:39Well, first of all, they support and anchor the plant,
03:43so it won't blow away or fall over.
03:45They also absorb water and nutrients.
03:48They store sugar and minerals,
03:50and finally, they carry water and nutrients up to the rest of the plant.
03:54Here are some images of roots from various plants.
03:58Some are shallow, and some grow very, very deep.
04:02Next, you have your stem.
04:05The stem of a plant receives and carries water and nutrients from the roots,
04:10carries food produced by the leaves from one part of the plant to another,
04:14and helps water move up the plant to get distributed throughout its various parts.
04:19Stems also provide the support the leaves need to reach the sunlight.
04:23Think of the stem as a ladder for the plant,
04:26reaching higher and higher and closer to the sun.
04:29And then you have the leaves.
04:32The leaves are amazing!
04:34They actually make the food for the plants through a process of photosynthesis,
04:39and come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.
04:42Look at how small these leaves are.
04:45Now look at these!
04:47They're absolutely huge!
04:50The leaves catch the light and have openings to allow air and water to come and go.
04:56And finally, as you can see, there are veins in leaves.
05:01Just like your veins carry blood and nutrients you need to live,
05:04veins in the leaves of plants carry water and nutrients from one part of the leaf to another.
05:10What about flowers?
05:12We know they're super pretty to look at, often smell really sweet, and they attract bees.
05:18But what do they do?
05:21Well, flowers are the seed-making part of the plant,
05:24are used for fertilization so the plant can reproduce,
05:28and sometimes turn into fruits or vegetables.
05:31They're colorful so that pollinators like bees and flies are attracted to them.
05:35The part below the flower that protects the buds as they start to bloom is called sepals.
05:41What about fruits?
05:44We all know they come from plants, but why?
05:47Just to be tasty and sweet for animals?
05:50Well, yes!
05:52That's because fruits contain seeds,
05:54and when animals eat them and leave behind their droppings,
05:57the seeds in the droppings that weren't digested can then become new plants.
06:01Fruits can also take the form of vegetables, and they also have seeds in them.
06:08Finally, you've got the seeds themselves.
06:11Seeds are where plants start, and they contain all that is needed to make a new plant.
06:16They have the plant's DNA already in them.
06:20They're full of nutrients that the new plant can use to help it start to sprout out of the ground.
06:26They're protected by an outer coat, and they're moved to new locations by the wind, water, or animals.
06:33What do you think is the coolest part of a plant?
06:37As you can see, all the parts are necessary for the whole plant to survive and thrive.
06:43If the parts don't work together, the plants won't be able to, well, be a plant.
06:49So the next time you're asked to take care of a plant, remember that all its parts are counting on you.
06:56You have to make sure it has enough water, plenty of light, and all of the nutrients it needs so that every part of the plant can do its thing.
07:06Under the right conditions, plants can live a long time.
07:10Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a ficus plant to water.
