00:00in April 1963 Lee Harvey Oswald returned to New Orleans in a city that seethed with
00:16intrigue and paranoia he was about to enter the most mysterious chapter of his short life
00:21and the murky trail he left behind still defies a complete explanation
00:28how many people know who the person depicted on the screen behind me is who is it at southeastern
00:40Louisiana University professor Michael Kurtz teaches a course on the Kennedy assassination
00:45depicted here Lee Harvey Oswald his students explore the maze of confusing and sinister
00:52political connections that Oswald entered in New Orleans there are still unresolved questions
00:57about this man Oswald was he a lone assassin as the Warren Commission claimed was he a person who
01:04was part of a broader conspiracy as many people claimed or was he simply a patsy set up to take
01:11the blame while the real people got away with it as he himself claimed if there was a plot to kill
01:21President Kennedy then it was probably hatched in New Orleans it was here that Lee Oswald may have
01:29crossed paths with men that hated Kennedy and wanted him eliminated the crucial question in 1963 is the
01:39crucial question in 1993 was there a conspiracy anybody who's going to make a conspiratorial
01:46interpretation of the assassination must connect Lee Harvey Oswald to that group that they posit as
01:52this co-conspirators if you want to posit conspiracy you must show associations and unfortunately for a simple
02:01explanation the associations cut in two directions this is ambivalence ambivalence ambivalence
02:07of us if we knew more about this case particularly the background of Lee Harvey Oswald focusing on the
02:15five months he spent in New Orleans during the spring and summer 1963 I think that perhaps we could unravel
02:21the key to the mystery of the Kennedy assassination that remains as much a mystery today as it did at the
02:27time Oswald arrived in New Orleans alone he had left his family behind in Texas with a friend he soon found
02:42work as a maintenance man by hiding much about his past from his new employers at the Riley coffee company he
02:49said that he would call when he got a job and he did in fact call in early May and uh talked to Marina
02:57said he'd gotten a job that he had a place for them to stay Marina was elated very happy as she hung up
03:04the phone and picked up Junie and said Papa Nassalubit father loves us and then we loaded up the car the
03:11next day and drove to New Orleans by now Oswald had found an apartment on Magazine Street
03:19it looked all right and had some old antique kind of furniture in it and that part was kind of nice but
03:28by evening it was very clear that it was also terribly infested with cockroaches
03:33when they first went into the apartment he really wanted her to be pleased and
03:39she wasn't that pleased and I felt his hurt in that
03:42at the coffee company Oswald soon grew bored with his menial job
03:51Oswald hated his job as a machine greaser at the Riley coffee company and every opportunity he had
03:58he would go next door to Adrian Alba's garage
04:01Alba had an interest that Oswald had and that was in guns
04:04Alba had National Rifle Association, Argosy, Nature and Hunting, different magazines that Oswald would sit and read
04:10and in addition Oswald tried to buy a 30-odd-6 rifle from him another time he tried to buy a Japanese rifle
04:15this was the bond they had
04:17Oswald had always liked guns
04:20but Marxist politics were still his ruling passion
04:24no sir I'm not a communist and I think that the
04:27in New Orleans Oswald became a very visible spokesman for his ideals
04:32and are you a Marxist?
04:34well I have studied Marxist philosophy yes sir and also other philosophers
04:38but are you a Marxist I think you did admit that you consider yourself a Marxist
04:44well I would very definitely say that I am a Marxist that is correct
04:47but that does not mean however I'm a communist
04:50Oswald's political hero was still Fidel Castro
04:57well of course Americans in general have only begun to notice Cuba since the Cuban revolution
05:05I always felt that Castro's Cuba was being pushed into this to the Soviet bloc by American policy
05:14I still feel that way
05:16Oswald had no sympathy for the hundreds of thousands of exiles who had fled Castro's Cuba
05:21there are peasants who do not like the collectivization in Cuban agriculture
05:28they flee they flee they flee Cuba in boats they flee any way they can go
05:34and I think that the opinion and the attitude of the Cuban government to this is good riddance
05:39Oswald's unyielding support of Castro was unlikely to win him friends among the Cuban exiles
05:48then pouring into New Orleans
05:50many joined violent paramilitary groups and waged a covert war on Cuba
05:58with the support of the CIA and the White House
06:03I can assure you that this flag will be returned to this brigade in a free Havana
06:15but after the Bay of Pigs fiasco and the Cuban Missile Crisis
06:21the exiles felt betrayed when Kennedy's support for their war began to wane
06:27by 1963 the Cuban enclaves in New Orleans burned with hatred for the president
06:33it was an intriguing city at the time
06:36and there was all these things going on with anti-Cuba, pro-Castro elements at the time
06:42New Orleans homicide detective L.J. Delsa
06:46was also an investigator for the House Assassinations Committee
06:49it was like watching a Humphrey Bogart movie at the time
06:54sort of like a Casablanca, you know
06:57in the spring of 1963
07:00Lee Oswald entered this world of plot and counterplot
07:04that May
07:07he wrote to America's leading pro-Castro group
07:11the Fair Play for Cuba Committee
07:13offering to start a chapter in New Orleans
07:15the committee discouraged him
07:18but he ignored their advice
07:19he began printing his own pro-Castro leaflets
07:23and phony membership cards
07:25he asked Marina to help him disguise the fact
07:29that he was the only member of his organization
07:31one day he asked her to sign a card
07:37for an organization
07:40and she said, you mean that organization with only one member?
07:46and he said
07:48didn't matter how many members it was
07:51it needed two signatures
07:52it would seem as though there were more members
07:54and he told her
07:55she was to sign under the name A.J. Heidel
07:59and then she asked him
08:02what's that name?
08:04an altered Fidel
08:05and he told her to shut up
08:07Oswald began handing out leaflets on the streets of New Orleans
08:14he continued to exaggerate the size of his one-man chapter
08:18we have had members in this area for several months now
08:25we have decided to feel out the public
08:28what they think of our organization, our aims
08:32and for that purpose we have been distributing literature on the street
08:39Oswald's pro-Castro activities seemed genuine enough
08:42but what happened next is a puzzle
08:44in August
08:46he approached the leader of an anti-Castro group
08:49named Carlos Bringer
08:50when Oswald came to my store for the first time
08:54he was explaining how he was against Castro
08:58and he was asking in what way he could help us
09:01to fight against Castro
09:03he was telling me that he would have been in the Marine Corps
09:06that he had experience in guerrilla warfare
09:08and that he can help us in the guerrilla fight against Castro
09:11the second time that Oswald came to my store
09:15was when he brought this guidebook from Marines
09:18he said that this was a present for me
09:20to see if this could help me out to fight Castro
09:24the manual showed how to make bombs, booby traps
09:28and how to conduct sabotage operations
09:31shortly before he sought out Bringer
09:34Oswald had written to the Fair Play for Cuba committee
09:37claiming that one of his street demonstrations
09:40had been attacked by some Cuban exiled gusanos
09:43in fact, no such incident had occurred
09:46but it did a few days later
09:52when Carlos Bringer found someone handing out
09:54pro-Castro leaflets on Canal Street
09:56it was the same Oswald that has been in my store
10:03a few days before
10:05offering his service to fight against Castro
10:07and now he was with the sign
10:09Viva Fidel and Hands of Cuba
10:11when he recognized me
10:13he smiled at me
10:14and he even tried to shake hands with me
10:16I refused to shake hands with him
10:19and I started insulting him
10:20and cursing him in English
10:21police were called to the scene
10:28where an amateur movie maker
10:30filmed the angry Cubans
10:31as they surrounded Oswald
10:33at that time
10:36I get angry
10:37and I was approaching Oswald
10:39trying to punch him in the face
10:41when he saw that I was approaching
10:44and he sensed my intention
10:45he put his arm down
10:46and he said to me
10:47okay Carlos
10:48if you want to hit me
10:49hit me
10:49immediately
10:50I realized that he wanted to appear
10:53as a victim
10:53as a martyr
10:55when one of the Cubans
10:57took the pro-Castro leaflets
10:59and threw them on the ground
11:00the police arrested Oswald
11:02and eight Cubans
11:03for disturbing the peace
11:04at the police station
11:07Oswald's conduct
11:09became even more mysterious
11:10we advised him
11:12that the booking procedure
11:14which was a municipal misdemeanor
11:16that he was eligible
11:18for posting a bond
11:19of $25 in cash
11:21or getting a politician
11:23to parole him
11:24he said he did not want either
11:27he wanted to go to jail
11:29we also told him
11:31that part of the booking procedure
11:33that he would have to be
11:34photographed and fingerprinted
11:36which he agreed to
11:38he insisted almost
11:40that we fingerprint
11:40and photograph him
11:41he seemed to want to
11:44let everyone know
11:45who he was
11:46and what he was doing
11:47he could have avoided it
11:50very very simply
11:51by saying
11:52hey
11:52here's my $25
11:54let me go home
11:55what kind of double game
11:58was Oswald playing
11:59one piece of evidence
12:01has continued
12:02to raise important questions
12:03about Oswald's true attitude
12:05toward Cuba
12:05and whose side
12:07he was really on
12:08the leaflets
12:09that Oswald
12:09hands out
12:10on Canal Street
12:11is pro-Castro leaflets
12:15hands off Cuba
12:16telling the government
12:17to leave it alone
12:18let it stay communist
12:19like Castro alone
12:20and the return addresses
12:22that are stamped on it
12:23is 544 Camp Street
12:25in that same building
12:27there is a private
12:29detective agency
12:30by a man named
12:31Guy Bannister
12:31and Guy Bannister
12:33is certainly not
12:35pro-Castro
12:35he's an ex-FBI agent
12:37from New York
12:38who is a
12:40violently
12:41anti-Castro
12:43and working
12:44to overthrow
12:46Castro
12:46but according to
12:49one of Bannister's
12:49secretaries
12:50Delphine Roberts
12:51Lee Oswald
12:52worked with
12:53Guy Bannister
12:54in 1963
12:55and was given
12:56an office
12:57in the Camp Street
12:57building
12:58to mount
12:59his pro-Castro
12:59campaign
13:00it's when
13:02the news
13:03accounts
13:03from Dallas
13:04were showing
13:05Oswald
13:06that Delphine
13:08said to me
13:09well you know
13:10he was in this office
13:11you saw him
13:12and I told her
13:14that not to my knowledge
13:15I didn't know
13:16that I'd seen him
13:17to me
13:18he would have been
13:18just another face
13:19in the crowd
13:20and she was
13:22just calling
13:22my attention
13:23to the news
13:24in Dallas
13:25that this man
13:26had been
13:26in our office
13:27Joe Newborough
13:33is a private
13:34detective
13:34who worked
13:35with Guy Bannister
13:36the new building
13:38over here
13:38is where
13:39544 Camp Street
13:40was
13:41this was
13:42Bannister's office
13:43this was
13:44Mancusa's restaurant
13:45this is
13:46544 Camp Street
13:48and this
13:49window here
13:50is where
13:50Lee Harvey Oswald
13:52allegedly
13:52had an office
13:54Newborough thinks
13:56the Camp Street
13:57address on Oswald's
13:58leaflet proves nothing
13:59because Bannister's office
14:00was on Lafayette Street
14:02around the corner
14:03absolutely
14:04you could not
14:05find yourself
14:05in Bannister's office
14:06if you went
14:07through the entrance
14:07of 544 Camp
14:08it went strictly
14:10to the second floor
14:11of the building
14:12there was no stairwell
14:13down
14:13you had to exit
14:14the second floor
14:15to the sidewalk
14:16walk around the corner
14:17and go into
14:18Bannister's office
14:19so they had
14:21separate entrances
14:21totally separate
14:23entrances
14:23and probably
14:24as 60 steps
14:25apart
14:26but new witnesses
14:28to an Oswald
14:28Bannister connection
14:29continue to come
14:30forward
14:31including
14:32Professor Michael
14:33Kurtz
14:33yes I saw them
14:35once in the
14:36Mancuso's restaurant
14:38on the ground floor
14:39of the infamous
14:40544 Camp Street
14:41building
14:42this is sometime
14:43during the summer
14:44of 1963
14:45I went across the street
14:46to get a cup of coffee
14:47and which I did
14:49and there were
14:50Bannister and Oswald
14:51sitting together
14:51at a table
14:52chatting with each other
14:53it was strange company
14:55for the Lee Harvey Oswald
14:56portrayed by the
14:57Warren Commission
14:58as a Marxist
14:59a Leninist
15:00a pro-Castro individual
15:01to be seen in the company
15:03of an extreme
15:04right-wing individual
15:05like Guy Bannister
15:06Guy Bannister
15:14was actively involved
15:15in the secret training
15:16of Cuban exiles
15:17one of Bannister's
15:21comrades in the fight
15:22against Castro
15:22was a former
15:23airline pilot
15:24named David Ferry
15:25he was a brilliant flyer
15:29he'd flown in and out
15:31of Cuba
15:31before and after
15:32the Bay of Pigs
15:33taking guerrillas in
15:34extracting them
15:36after operations
15:36he was heard to say
15:38sometime after
15:39the Bay of Pigs
15:40that President Kennedy
15:41had betrayed the nation
15:43in his conduct
15:45of that operation
15:45and he said
15:47on one occasion
15:48that the President
15:48ought to be shot
15:49and later
15:50some people would come
15:52to think
15:53that he meant it
15:53in the 1950s
15:57David Ferry
15:58commanded a squadron
15:59in the Civil Air Patrol
16:00but was suspended
16:02for indoctrinating
16:03the young cadets
16:03with his anti-communist views
16:05in the 50s
16:07Lee Oswald
16:08was in the CAP
16:09and several fellow cadets
16:11said David Ferry
16:12was one of Oswald's instructors
16:13there are some clues
16:16to suggest that
16:17Oswald and Ferry's paths
16:19crossed again
16:20in the summer of 1963
16:22most persuasive of all
16:23perhaps
16:24were the group of people
16:26completely independent witnesses
16:28who said that
16:30a car arrived one day
16:31in the little town
16:32of Clinton
16:33outside New Orleans
16:34and that
16:36three white members
16:38were in it
16:38one of them was Oswald
16:39who most oddly
16:41got out of the car
16:42the only white face
16:43to line up
16:44in a long line
16:45of blacks
16:46waiting to register
16:47to vote
16:47waited
16:48stood in the line
16:50and then eventually
16:51departed
16:52and they said that
16:53one of the other
16:54two white men
16:55one of Oswald's companions
16:56was in fact
16:58a man who looked
16:59exactly like
17:00David Ferry
17:01and
17:02they had no doubt
17:03later
17:04about their recognition
17:05of Ferry
17:06because Ferry
17:07by that time
17:08looked pretty odd
17:09he suffered from alopecia
17:11and he wore
17:12a wig
17:13and indeed
17:14false eyebrows
17:16not the sort of guy
17:17you forget in a hurry
17:18if David Ferry
17:21was with Oswald
17:22in 1963
17:23it could be significant
17:25because Ferry
17:26as well as Guy Bannister
17:27was connected
17:28to one of the major figures
17:30in organized crime
17:31we took very seriously
17:33the possibility
17:34that organized crime
17:35had a hand
17:35in the president's death
17:36the FBI
17:38had illegal
17:39electronic surveillance
17:40on the major figures
17:41of organized crime
17:42we did a survey
17:44of that surveillance
17:46what we did find
17:47and shockingly
17:48is repeated conversations
17:51by these people
17:52that indicated
17:53the depth
17:53of their hatred
17:54for Kennedy
17:55and actual discussions
17:57of they ought to be killed
17:58they ought to be whacked
17:59no mobster hated the Kennedys
18:03more than Carlos Marcello
18:05the mafia chieftain
18:06of New Orleans
18:07a prime target
18:08of the administration's
18:09war on organized crime
18:11in 1961
18:13Robert Kennedy
18:14had personally ordered
18:15Marcello's arrest
18:16and deportation
18:17the boss of New Orleans
18:19was humiliated
18:20Carlos Marcello
18:22talks about
18:22getting
18:23he speaks in Sicilian
18:25getting the stone
18:26out of my shoe
18:27and talking about
18:28getting a nut
18:29to kill
18:30not Bobby Kennedy
18:32who was his nemesis
18:34but John Kennedy
18:35who was the
18:36the man behind
18:37the nemesis
18:39Marcello returned
18:41to New Orleans
18:42to fight
18:43the deportation order
18:44as attorneys hired
18:45both Guy Bannister
18:46and David Ferry
18:47as investigators
18:48in the case
18:49for Robert Blakey
18:51who believes
18:51the mafia
18:52was involved
18:53in the Kennedy assassination
18:54this is the critical link
18:56when you find
18:58David Ferry
18:59who is a
19:01investigator
19:02for Carlos Marcello
19:03being a boyhood friend
19:05to Lee Harvey Oswald
19:06and with him
19:07that summer
19:08and with
19:09Carlos Marcello
19:10at that very point
19:12in time
19:13you have an immediate
19:14connection
19:15between a man
19:15who had the motive
19:16opportunity
19:17and means to kill
19:18Kennedy
19:18and the man
19:20who killed Kennedy
19:21I think what
19:23many conspiracy critics
19:24do is they try
19:25to take the chain
19:26the connections
19:27too far back
19:28they say Oswald
19:29knew Ferry
19:29and Ferry
19:30did some investigative
19:31work for Marcello
19:32and Bannister
19:34did some investigative
19:35work for Marcello
19:36Marcello hated Kennedy
19:37and therefore
19:38it must have been
19:39Marcello deciding
19:40to kill Kennedy
19:41down to Ferry
19:41and Bannister
19:42who then gave
19:42the order to Oswald
19:43who went off
19:44and did it
19:44it's wonderful
19:45speculation
19:46there's just no evidence
19:47to back it up
19:48Gerald Posner
19:50disputes all the sightings
19:52of Oswald and Ferry
19:53in the Civil Air Patrol
19:54and in 1963
19:56he points out
19:57there has never been
19:58any hard documentary
19:59evidence linking
20:00the two men
20:01I discovered documents
20:03that were from
20:04the Civil Air Patrol
20:05which show that
20:06David Ferry
20:07was suspended
20:07from the CAP
20:08in 1954
20:09and not reinstated
20:11until 1958
20:12he wasn't even
20:13in the patrol
20:14in 1955
20:15when Oswald

20:17Frontline has uncovered
20:19the first hard evidence
20:20that places Oswald
20:22and Ferry together
20:23this photograph
20:24taken in 1955
20:26at a CAP barbecue
20:27John Cerevolo
20:30and Tony Eisenhopper
20:31were in the CAP
20:32with Lee Oswald
20:34this is several cadets
20:35including Oswald
20:37on the end
20:37in the white t-shirt
20:38myself standing
20:40in front of him
20:41and over here
20:42in the white t-shirt
20:43and the helmet
20:43is Dave Ferry
20:45because of all
20:46of the publicity
20:47you can recognize Ferry
20:49you can recognize Oswald
20:50they were both
20:51in the CAP
20:52at the same time
20:53they were both
20:53wearing CAP uniforms
20:55after the Kennedy assassination
20:59David Ferry
21:00denied that he ever
21:01knew Lee Oswald
21:02I never heard
21:04David Ferry
21:05mention Lee Harvey Oswald
21:06I never met him
21:07I would certainly
21:08remember if I ever did
21:09Leighton Martens
21:11was also a CAP cadet
21:13he stayed friendly
21:14with Ferry
21:15until his death
21:16in 1967
21:17and it does appear
21:19as though David Ferry
21:20is in the picture
21:20and on the other end
21:22of the picture
21:22there is a person
21:23who looks like
21:24Lee Harvey Oswald
21:25it would indicate
21:26that there could be
21:27a possibility
21:29of an association
21:30but if and to what extent
21:33it's another question
21:36of course we've all been
21:38photographed with people
21:39and we could be presented
21:40with photographs later
21:41and asked
21:43well do you know
21:43this person
21:44obviously you must
21:45because you were
21:46photographed with them
21:47to which we'd have
21:48to answer
21:48well no
21:49it's just a photograph
21:50and I don't know
21:51that person
21:51it's just someone
21:52who happened to be
21:53in the picture
21:53so
21:54but it's interesting
21:55the shame of this thing
21:57is that the whole question
21:59of Oswald's activity
22:00in New Orleans
22:01was never properly
22:02investigated
22:03by officialdom
22:05at the beginning
22:06Guy Bannister
22:08the former FBI agent
22:09at 544 Camp Street
22:11was never ever asked
22:13by anybody
22:14about Lee Harvey Oswald
22:16David Ferry
22:17was questioned
22:19but the investigation
22:21was dropped
22:22very quickly
22:22and the names
22:24of neither Bannister
22:25nor Ferry
22:26are in the Warren Report
22:28simply doesn't mention
22:29either of them
22:30if Oswald did have
22:34a secret connection
22:35to Ferry and Bannister
22:36in 1963
22:37the nature of that
22:39relationship
22:40remains unclear
22:41and that evidence
22:45must be weighed
22:45against the rest
22:46of what is known
22:47of his time
22:47in New Orleans
22:48where Oswald
22:49continued to demonstrate
22:50for Castro
22:51well I think
22:55if we take Oswald
22:56at the simplest level
22:57what we see
22:59he's trying to do
23:00is enhance
23:01his credentials
23:03as a supporter
23:05of Castro
23:06one of the ways
23:07he's trying to do this
23:08is actually work
23:09for Castro
23:09another way
23:11he's trying to find out
23:12information
23:13that would be of use
23:14to Castro
23:15and the normal way
23:16you find out information
23:17is you join the enemy
23:18that summer
23:21Oswald wrote an account
23:23of his political activity
23:24in New Orleans
23:25stressing his credentials
23:28as a Marxist
23:29street agitator
23:31and an organizer
23:32in this resume
23:35he wrote that he had
23:36infiltrated
23:37Carlos Bringer's organization
23:39when Oswald
23:41and the Cubans
23:41appeared in court
23:42for disturbing the peace
23:43over the leafleting incident
23:44Bringer was determined
23:46to find out more
23:47about the young American
23:48a friend of mine
23:55went to Oswald's house
23:56and he was
23:58telling Oswald
23:59that he was
24:00forecasting
24:01then they start
24:02talking over there
24:03and in the meantime
24:05Oswald's child
24:06came out
24:07and Marina
24:08came after that
24:09and they start
24:10talking in Russian
24:11that is when
24:12we learned
24:13that Oswald
24:14was speaking Russian
24:15my friend
24:16asked Oswald
24:17if that was Russian
24:19where he had
24:19learned Russian
24:20his Oswald answer
24:21was that he was
24:22attending Tulane University
24:24taking Russian
24:25studies
24:27a lie
24:28and that is a lie
24:29he was a liar
24:30he lied a lot
24:31in his life
24:31these are officials
24:34of Inca
24:34the Information Council
24:36of the Americas
24:37Oswald who had concealed
24:39his defection
24:39to Russia
24:40was earning the attention
24:41of professional
24:42anti-communists
24:43Ed Butler
24:44who conceived
24:45and initiated
24:46the organization
24:47as executive
24:48vice president
24:49he is in charge
24:50of the Inca program
24:51and engages
24:52in direct
24:53personal conflict
24:54with communism
24:55when Ed Butler
24:58and Carlos Bringer
24:59were invited
24:59to debate Oswald
25:01on a local radio show
25:02Butler did some
25:03background research
25:04we found out
25:07after I had
25:08accepted
25:09the interview
25:10about Oswald's
25:11defection
25:12to Russia
25:12the information
25:14the information
25:14came from
25:15the House
25:16Un-American Activities
25:18Committee files
25:19they sent me
25:20the material
25:20I requested it
25:21and they sent it
25:23where did they
25:23get it from
25:24they got it
25:24from the newspapers
25:25the open press
25:26that's basically
25:27what they sent me
25:28clippings
25:28that Oswald
25:30had defected
25:30to Russia
25:31and so forth
25:32Butler and Bringer
25:33met Oswald
25:34at the studios
25:35of WDSU radio
25:37before the debate
25:39we were talking
25:40over there
25:40for about 15 minutes
25:42and as he saw
25:43my guidebook
25:44the guidebook
25:44for Marine
25:45that he had left
25:46for me
25:46he said to me
25:47Carlos
25:47please don't use
25:49that guidebook
25:50because it's obsolete
25:51you are going
25:52to get killed
25:52and now back
25:54to conversation
25:55carte blanche
25:56here again
25:56Bill Sletter
25:57Mr. Oswald
25:58as you might imagine
25:59is on the hot seat
26:00tonight
26:00and I believe
26:01after the assassination
26:02the debate
26:03was reenacted
26:04on film
26:04using the original
26:05sound recording
26:06of Oswald's voice
26:08are you
26:08or have you
26:09been a communist
26:10well I had
26:12answered that
26:12Oswald seemed
26:14unaware
26:15that his opponents
26:15knew all about
26:16his defection
26:17to Russia
26:17he was about
26:19to be ambushed
26:20Mr. Butler
26:21brought some
26:22newspaper clipping
26:23to my attention
26:23you did live
26:25in Russia
26:25for three years
26:26that is correct
26:26and I think
26:27the fact that
26:28I did live
26:29for a time
26:30in the Soviet Union
26:31gives me
26:32excellent qualifications
26:33to repudiate
26:34charges that Cuba
26:35and the Fair Play
26:36for Cuba committee
26:37is communist
26:38controlled
26:38I think he was
26:40surprised
26:40but again
26:41he handled it
26:42if you listen
26:43to the debate
26:44very coolly
26:45and it impeached
26:46his credibility
26:47and yet he managed
26:50to turn it
26:50to his advantage
26:51which is
26:52I think
26:53shows some aplomb
26:54certainly a lot
26:55more than
26:56most people
26:57give him credit
26:57for
26:58I would like
27:00to know
27:01is it Fair Play
27:02for Cuba committee
27:02or Fair Play
27:03for Russia committee
27:04well that is
27:06of course
27:06very provocative
27:07and a question
27:09I don't think
27:10it requires
27:10an answer
27:11well I see
27:12would you say
27:13then that the Fair Play
27:14for Cuba committee
27:15is not a communist
27:16front organization
27:17we have been
27:18investigated
27:19from several
27:20points of view
27:21that is points
27:21of view
27:22of taxes
27:23allegiance
27:23subversion
27:24and so forth
27:25the findings
27:26have been
27:27as I say
27:28absolutely zero
27:29he was angry
27:31that it has been
27:32discovered
27:33that he had
27:33tried to
27:34defect to
27:35the Soviet Union
27:36and he had
27:37been exposed
27:38in the debate
27:38and that
27:39I could still
27:40see his face
27:41becoming red
27:42and further
27:43and further
27:43gentlemen
27:44I'm going to
27:44have to interrupt
27:45our time
27:46is almost up
27:46thank you very much
27:48and good evening
27:48the last thing
27:50that I remember
27:51was Oswald
27:51taking out a notebook
27:53glancing up at me
27:54and fixing me
27:55with a gaze
27:56of hatred
27:56and asking
27:58for my name
27:59and address
27:59and phone number
28:01and writing it
28:02down in the notebook
28:02snapping it shut
28:04looking up
28:05and giving me
28:05that Oswald
28:06sneer
28:07I went one way
28:08and he went the other
28:09you either are
28:10a communist
28:11or have been
28:11could you straighten out
28:12that point
28:13the debate
28:13ended Oswald's
28:14campaign for Castro
28:16on the streets
28:16of New Orleans
28:17and he withdrew
28:20from the public stage
28:21by now he had been
28:28fired from the
28:29Riley Coffee Company
28:30the third job
28:32he'd lost in a year
28:33and he began
28:34spending even more time
28:35at his local library
28:36that summer
28:38he checked out
28:39books about
28:39the assassination
28:40of Huey Long
28:41Mao Zedong's
28:42revolution
28:43and John F. Kennedy
28:45Oswald still
28:47disagreed with Kennedy
28:48on Cuba
28:48but he seemed
28:49to like the president
28:50but insofar
28:52as he spoke
28:53about Kennedy
28:54it was
28:56to praise him
28:57and he suffered
29:00as she did
29:01in the summer
29:02of 1963
29:05over the death
29:07of the Kennedy's baby
29:08both he and Marina
29:10took this very personally
29:12and they thought
29:13that if the best doctors
29:15couldn't save
29:16the Kennedy's baby
29:17then the baby
29:18they were expecting
29:20might not be born
29:22alive either
29:24one evening
29:29Marina came home
29:31about dusk
29:32and she saw Lee
29:34on the screened-in
29:36porch
29:37and he was
29:39perched on his knee
29:41with his rifle
29:43at his shoulder
29:44and he was aiming it
29:46she was extremely
29:49surprised at this
29:50she hated to see him
29:53with the rifle again
29:54but he continued
29:57to dry fire
29:58the rifle
29:59for the last part
30:01of August
30:01and the first part
30:03of September
30:03Marina says Lee
30:11told her he wanted
30:12to go fight
30:12for Castro
30:13and he began
30:14hatching a scheme
30:15to hijack a plane
30:16to Havana
30:17he said that
30:19he would sit
30:20in the front row
30:21of the airplane cabin
30:23she would sit
30:24in the back row
30:25with June
30:26and at a certain point
30:28he would
30:29put a gun
30:31in the back
30:32of the pilot
30:34of the aircraft
30:35she would stand up
30:37and keep
30:38the entire
30:39passenger
30:40contingent
30:41at bay
30:42with a pistol
30:43and speak to them
30:46and she would speak
30:47to the crowd
30:48and tell them
30:49to be quiet
30:50Marina laughed
30:52at him
30:52and said
30:53well
30:53but I don't speak
30:54English
30:55how am I going
30:56to explain
30:57to them
30:57eventually
30:59she laughed
31:00him out
31:00of the skyjacking
31:02plan
31:02and he came
31:05home one day
31:06and said
31:07mama
31:07I found
31:08a legal way
31:09go to Mexico
31:10on September
31:1425th
31:15Oswald
31:16disappeared
31:16from New Orleans
31:17where he was
31:19that night
31:19is still
31:20one of the
31:20intriguing
31:20mysteries
31:21of his life
31:22there is testimony
31:24that sometime
31:24between 7
31:25and 10 p.m.
31:27he made a call
31:27to a leader
31:28of the Socialist
31:29Labour Party
31:29in Houston
31:30the Warren Commission
31:34believed Oswald
31:35took a bus
31:35from New Orleans
31:36to Houston
31:36but there are
31:37no records
31:38to confirm
31:38that conclusion
31:39meanwhile
31:43more than
31:43200 miles away
31:44in Dallas
31:45three men
31:46two Latins
31:47and an American
31:48showed up
31:49unexpectedly
31:49at the doorstep
31:50of three young
31:51Cuban exiles
31:52whose father
31:53headed an
31:54anti-Castro
31:55organization
31:55Sylvia and
31:58Annie Odio
31:59granted Frontline
32:00this rare interview
32:01one night
32:04I opened the door
32:05for three men
32:06that came to see
32:07one of my sisters
32:07I opened the door
32:09they were in a
32:10small hallway
32:10with bright lights
32:12overhead
32:12the taller man
32:14introduced
32:14the other two men
32:15Leopoldo
32:16he said that was
32:17his name
32:18he introduced
32:20the American
32:21who was in the middle
32:22as Leon Oswald
32:23and he introduced
32:24the one
32:25that seemed
32:26Mexican
32:26and spoke
32:27with the Mexican
32:28accent
32:28as Angelo
32:30and are you
32:31quite clear
32:31about it
32:32that when
32:32those men
32:33visited your
32:33apartment
32:34the American
32:35was introduced
32:36as Oswald
32:37the American
32:40was introduced
32:40as Leon Oswald
32:42that would always
32:43be in my mind
32:43very clearly
32:44according to
32:47the Odio sisters
32:48Leon Oswald
32:49said nothing
32:50as Leopoldo
32:51and Angelo
32:52asked for help
32:53raising money
32:53for the anti-Castro
32:54cause
32:55suspicious
32:57the Odio sisters
32:58declined
32:59and a half hour
33:00later
33:01the three men
33:01drove away
33:02I think it was
33:04two days
33:04after that
33:05Leopoldo
33:06who had clearly
33:07a Cuban accent
33:08called me
33:09on the phone
33:09and he
33:11tried to be
33:12very friendly
33:13on the phone
33:13with me
33:14and was trying
33:14to sell me
33:15the idea
33:15of the American
33:17the first thing
33:18that he asked
33:19was what
33:20did you think
33:20of the American
33:21and actually
33:22I had not
33:22formed any
33:23appearance
33:23of the American
33:23at the time
33:24he said
33:25well you know
33:26he is
33:26we don't know
33:28what to make
33:28of him
33:29he's kind
33:29of local
33:30he's been
33:31telling us
33:32the Cubans
33:33should have
33:33murdered
33:34or should have
33:35assassinated
33:35President Kennedy
33:37right after
33:37the Bay of Pigs
33:38and they didn't
33:38have any guts
33:39to do it
33:41they should do it
33:41and it was
33:43a very easy
33:43thing to do
33:44at the time
33:45but author
33:49Gerald Posner
33:49believes
33:50Sylvia Odio
33:51is mistaken
33:52about the date
33:53on which
33:53the three men
33:54appeared at
33:54her door
33:55it's physically
33:58impossible
33:58for Lee Harvey
33:59Oswald
33:59to have been
34:00at the Odio
34:00residence
34:01on the days
34:01that she
34:02describes
34:03she says
34:03that he was
34:04either there
34:04on the 26th
34:05or 27th
34:06of September
34:07Thursday
34:07or Friday
34:08maybe at the
34:08very earliest
34:09Wednesday
34:10the 25th
34:11the reason
34:11the reason
34:12that I remember
34:12so clearly
34:13was because
34:14that same
34:14night
34:15or I think
34:16either that
34:16night
34:16or the night
34:17afterwards
34:17I wrote
34:18my father
34:18and I also
34:20told a friend
34:22of mine
34:22who was my
34:23father confessor
34:24about the visit
34:24Odio
34:26Odio talked
34:26to father
34:27Walter
34:27McCann
34:28after the
34:29phone call
34:29from Leopoldo
34:30I think
34:31I can pin
34:32a date
34:32to this
34:32conversation
34:33with Sylvia
34:34it was the
34:35day in which
34:36I spoke to her
34:37about her
34:38attending
34:39a charity
34:40event
34:40at which
34:41Janet Lee
34:41was going
34:42to appear
34:42in Dallas
34:43if father
34:45McCann
34:46is correct
34:46about Janet
34:47Lee
34:47then the
34:48three men
34:48must have
34:49visited the
34:49Odios
34:50two days
34:50earlier
34:51on September
34:5225th
34:52the only
34:54night
34:54Oswald
34:55could possibly
34:55have been
34:56in Dallas
34:56they were
34:59trying to
35:00sell me
35:00the American
35:01because they
35:02spoke that
35:02he was a
35:03marksman
35:03that he
35:03had been
35:04an ex-marine
35:05and that
35:06he was
35:06someone
35:07who could
35:08be used
35:08and who
35:09could be
35:09an asset
35:10to any
35:10organization
35:11Leopoldo
35:14and Angelo
35:14have never
35:15been identified
35:16and the
35:17meaning of
35:17this incident
35:18remains
35:18elusive
35:19if Oswald
35:21was there
35:21was he
35:22infiltrating
35:23another
35:24anti-Castro
35:24group
35:25or was
35:26someone
35:26setting him
