Key Aspects and Criticisms

The film's strengths include the cast's chemistry and the unique visual style, while some criticisms point to a script that is not as strong as it could be and the handling of the villains.[21] The film's retro-futuristic aesthetic is a major highlight.[181] The film is considered a standalone story, not requiring viewers to have prior knowledge of the MCU.[21]

00:00Okay, welcome back. This is going to be a quick out-of-the-theater review for Fantastic Four First Steps.
00:09Man, I'm shocked to hear myself say this, but I really love this film.
00:15I went in to see it with my daughter, thinking it would be total ass.
00:20I did enjoy the Thunderbolts, not going to lie, but it was no Winter Soldier, you know what I'm saying?
00:26But this was surprisingly good. I heard a lot of rumors about that, and I'll get into spoilers later in the video.
00:35It's going to be like a five-minute video, probably, real short.
00:38But I don't want to give away too much. I want you all to go see this for yourselves if you can.
00:43You'll enjoy it, especially if you enjoyed the first stage of Marvel movies.
00:49This is the first movie that's felt like a Phase 1 Marvel movie in quite a while.
00:54So, yeah, a lot of the newer efforts, particularly in the MCU era of Marvel, have not been very enjoyable.
01:05But this was.
01:07Now, I would like to address a few things real quickly.
01:11There's been a lot on the internet about Sue Storm girlbossing, the return of the MCU,
01:17Pedro Pascal being a weak beta male.
01:23And for the most part, for the most part, I'd like to say that's 90% not true, which is a pleasure to say.
01:34I feel like everybody gets pretty equal spotlight time.
01:39Now, Sue Storm does get a little bit more.
01:42She is pregnant for most of the film and having a baby.
01:46I think that's totally understandable.
01:48The story does revolve around her giving birth to Franklin Richards.
01:54Now, I'm about to get into some spoilers.
01:56So, if you don't want anything spoiled for you about this movie, now's a good time to stop.
02:03But, okay, so what did I like about the movie?
02:07In a word, Galactus.
02:10Now, hardcore comic book fans are going to notice that this Galactus seems a bit weaker.
02:16But if you go back to the...
02:18I'm not trying to justify it.
02:19Everybody in the MCU is a little bit weaker.
02:21Hulk, especially Thor.
02:23They can't quite pull off the god-tier characters that we're used to in the comics.
02:28But Galactus is a home run.
02:31He's 99% perfect.
02:34If I have any complaints, I would say that he is a little bit weaker.
02:37But like I just said, everybody in the MCU is a little weaker.
02:42But, yeah, they nailed Galactus.
02:44I was going to say, if you read the original comics, in the very beginning, he's actually very small.
02:50Smaller than he is in this movie.
02:53Most of the time, he's much larger than he is in this movie.
02:57So, they kind of scaled him down.
02:58He's about twice the height of the Statue of Liberty.
03:01But, yeah, he's amazing.
03:05The graphics are amazing.
03:07The visuals are amazing.
03:10Like I said, this movie, it benefits...
03:12It benefits from not being tied to other MCU movies.
03:17I know it's setting up Avengers Doomsday.
03:20But, it's not tied to the TV shows.
03:24And, it's not tied to Phase 5, Phase 6 movies, necessarily.
03:28It's kind of its own complete story.
03:30So, Galactus is a home run.
03:32The Family is a home run.
03:35Johnny Storm is not gay.
03:37He's very straight in this movie.
03:40Sorry, that's my ice maker making ice.
03:44Reed could have been a little better.
03:46I don't know how much of that is the actual movie.
03:49And, how much is my fatigue over Pedro Pascal, personally.
03:54He's a decent actor.
03:56He's just way overused.
03:57And, he's kind of a little insecure.
04:00And, not much of a leader, honestly, in this.
04:03So, he's definitely one of the weaker parts of the film.
04:06I would say the other three members of the family are definitely the high point.
04:11Sue, Ben, and Johnny.
04:13I really wish they'd gone with somebody besides Pedro Pascal.
04:18But, I love this movie.
04:20I'm not afraid to say it.
04:21I love this movie.
04:23This is a far superior movie to Superman.
04:28There's very little about Superman that I liked.
04:30I know a lot of people are raving on it.
04:33I'm not here to trash you for what you like.
04:35It's just comparing, you know, pure cinema to pure cinema.
04:39This has a more coherent pace.
04:42It has far better visuals, far better dialogue, far better story, to be quite honest.
04:49This should beat Superman.
04:52Thank you all for watching.
04:53Like I said, this is just a quick review.
04:55And, take care.
04:56Bye.
