00:00Is the new Superman film about Gaza?
00:06Comments have been circulating widely on social media,
00:09alleging that the new Superman film,
00:11which was released on 11 July this year,
00:14is about Israel's war on Gaza,
00:17and that it is pro-Palestinian.
00:19The film has now grossed over $407 million US dollars worldwide
00:24and has been a runaway box office hit.
00:27The story follows the superhero to the fictional US-backed country of Baravia,
00:34which is attempting to occupy neighbouring, impoverished Jharnampur.
00:39Some posts online claim that the imagery in the film
00:42is highly reminiscent of what is happening in Gaza,
00:45referencing scenes such as one where a child holds a flag in the face of an invasion,
00:50and elements such as a border fence against a landscape
00:53that looks like the Palestinian territory.
00:56The Israeli consulate in Los Angeles also appeared to respond to the film
01:00with two Facebook posts reading
01:02the real superheroes,
01:05alongside images which appear to be that of the Israeli army.
01:08However, production, costume design,
01:11and casting for Superman actually began in April 2023.
01:16Storyboarding happened in May,
01:18and screen tests took place in June.
01:20All of this before Hamas attacked Israel on October the 7th, 2023.
01:26James Gunn, the American director of Superman,
01:29insisted there are no direct references to Israel and Palestine.
01:33Filming did in fact begin on the 29th of February 2024,
01:38which was after October the 7th.
01:41Nevertheless, viewers are sharing ways in which the film has played a part
01:45in changing how they view what is taking place in Gaza.
