00:31stone of wisdom and re-review trodlers a classic pc puzzle game in our history lesson we remember
00:43the infamous senate hearings that led to the formation of the esrb right in the middle of
00:51the nintendo and sega war finally in our hardware review we examine the nes n8 cartridge albeit the
01:02asian one so follow us in another exciting episode for the love of retro let us begin
01:21welcome to this week's new old software reviews and for you we have dr. dangerous secrets of the temple of
01:42zoltan it's a game by who games 2017 you will need a amiga 500 with a 512 kilobyte ram extension
01:59and a kickstart of 1.3 in order to run it successfully now it's an puzzle platformer of sorts it has some
02:13similarities to the three vikings game but it's a game of its on its own the graphics as you can see
02:25are more than great they are very well animated the colors are vibrant the music and the sound effects are very good
02:39now the goal of the game is to collect nine batteries in its level and of course avoid getting killed
02:51you do have the means to defend yourself in the form of a zapper but the ammunition in each stage is limited and you have to make good use of it
03:04some enemies is completely useless to kill as you can find other ways to bypass them now there is environmental hazards and in every stage you can find
03:19a code as you can see here if you get it you get an extra life now the codes the codes obviously are useful to continue from that stage now the game is very well made the controls are excellent collision detection and all
03:46the graphics are very good and humorous
03:53precision jumping is necessary sometimes I definitely recommend this game it's a pleasant surprise it looks and plays as a game of high quality
04:15it's hard it's hard not to believe that this was published back in the day by some big corporation
04:24oh ouch now who games 2017 go get it and enjoy it let's move on to our next day our next game is very well
04:43next day and next game of the week. Now our next game is called L'Abbaye de Mortes. It's for NES,
04:55if I'm not mistaken it means the Abbey of Death or of the Dead.
05:04It's a game that resembles the classic Jet Set Willy, but truly updated.
05:13It's horror themed, believe it or not, even with those cute NES graphics. It has a story,
05:21you're a monk escaping from religious
05:29hunts and you take shelter from the knights that are after you in an Abbey that's obviously
05:36haunted and has a dark history of its own. Now the purpose of the game is to collect some crosses.
05:45Actually, as you move on, the purpose
05:52differentiates. It is a very hard game, I must say that. It has all that magic,
06:01a moment of serenity, all that magic of the old NES games. It's really tough. It's by Paris Soft.
06:09There are plenty of puzzles to solve. You have to be extra careful, calculate your jumps.
06:22Collision detection is excellent and just, so you have only yourself to blame when you die.
06:31I died quite a lot making this video.
06:33But that's actually me playing good at this point.
06:41Yeah, not that good.
06:43These crosses, these stone crosses are checkpoints.
06:48Once you touch one, it clicks, of sorts, and you get to continue from that point.
06:58Now, when I'll die, like now, see, now I'll continue from here and
07:07yeah, from this point on it looks like a suicide run for me.
07:10Now, the game is excellent. The graphics are very, very well done, considering that it's an NES game.
07:20Excellent use of the palette. The music, the sound, the gameplay is very good, solid good gameplay,
07:30solid good controls. It is a very tough game, but I definitely recommend it. It has very high production
07:39values, and I do believe that it's going to give you a lot of fun times.
07:48We don't get to see a lot of that high quality games on the NES, so I do believe it's worth a playthrough.
07:58And with that, we're moving on.
08:09Hello, and welcome to this week's Hardware Review.
08:18This week we have for you the EverDrive N8, but I want to be clear and specify that this
08:26is a clone version, purchased from a certain Asian market.
08:32It's cheaper than the original version, and as you will see, it functions a bit different.
08:42But, I wanted to review hardware that's a bit more affordable, and at the same time,
08:50to see how much more or less convenient it is to use than the original one.
09:00Now, this is the SD card input.
09:06We'll put it in our NES, here, push it down, sorry, and we're good to go.
09:24Let's go see how it works. Now, once we boot up the cartridge, we are greeted with this screen,
09:31which is pretty similar to the screen of the original EverDrive.
09:40Now, the games are divided here. There are a lot of games.
09:48Let's choose something here. All you have to do is
09:54go to the game you want to load. Of course, the usual method works up, down,
10:00to move one game at a time, or left-right to scroll an entire page.
10:06So, let's say Darkwing Duck. We press the B button,
10:11and it asks us if we want to select the game and start it. Just select it, or receive
10:18info about the game, such as this.
10:25So, let's start the game.
10:30Now, as you can see, the loading is pretty fast.
10:37Hustle-free.
10:43And there we go.
10:46It's stable. I didn't encounter any problems.
11:07And here we go.
11:07It's been a while since I played this game.
11:25Now, there are two more things I want to show you.
11:31Let's reset the console.
11:37You can press the Start button in order to start the game that was loaded last time.
11:46Like this.
11:46And I also want to show you that there is also a Cheats function here.
12:00Of course, it's a Game Genie code. You have to insert the codes.
12:05Device Info, Mapper Info, and a few options.
12:14The Sorting File System.
12:19You can reset to game. Once the cartridge starts, you can swap A and B.
12:26keys. You have the Save state, and what keys to use in order to activate it, and the Load state,
12:34which is a very, very useful function.
12:37Granted that these old games sometimes are, well, as tough as nails.
12:44So, let's go back to sum it up.
12:47Now, as you can see, the cartridge works very well.
12:55The menu resembles the original EverDrive's menu quite a lot, but there are some functions
13:03missing from it, such as the Hex Editor, the Hex Viewer, actually, or the Jumper settings.
13:15Also, I must say here that the games load pretty fast.
13:25There's no delay. There isn't the typical process of waiting to flash the game to the cartridge in
13:36order to start, something that we need a lot to these clone cartridges.
13:39All in all, I think that considering the lower price, it is a good cartridge.
13:47As always, if you really want the full experience, I'd say go for the original one, but
13:57it is a very good alternative, and if you have a low budget, I definitely recommend it.
14:05And let's move on.
14:19Hello and welcome to this week's DOS Vault.
14:24We begin with Trottlers, a game of 1993 for the MS-DOS that also came the year before,
14:341992 for the Amiga, and along with the DOS version was a Super NES version as well.
14:42It's a puzzle game that borrows some ideas from the famous Lemmings series of games.
14:51Now, your task here is to lead the small creatures, the Trottlers, into the exit port,
15:06because they have been transformed into a, well, zombie, let's say, form,
15:12and they're kind of mindless walking around.
15:18Now, you have the ability to summon these blocks,
15:24to create these blocks, and they are limited blocks in every round.
15:31You can sometimes get some more, even if you have used yours, by destroying blocks that you
15:44find placed already in the environment. There are these cherries, these fruits,
15:50lemons, and other kind of fruits as bonuses. Now, once you form a path, as you can see here,
15:57that will lead the necessary amount of Trottlers to the exit, you've won the round. You get a passport
16:08for the... if you want to return to play from this stage.
16:17Now, sometimes, in some stages like this, you have to be really quick, if you don't want to have to
16:24suffer the whole process of them going all around the stage until you lead them to the exit, even though
16:32you build the appropriate states. You must be careful when you cast your block spell. If there is a
16:41Trottler already there, you may destroy him, and if you destroy a lot of Trottlers,
16:50you won't have the necessary ones to finish the stage, because its stage has a different prerequisite.
17:00Now, the animation and the graphics are very good, the music is cute, nothing special, but still
17:07functional. It's a very fun game, if you like puzzle games, and I definitely, definitely recommend it.
17:13Let's move on. Our next game is The Stone of Wisdom. To be honest, it's a DOS-like game,
17:25for the time being you can find only a Windows version. Now, it is a game that reminds us of the
17:37the early days Zelda games, albeit in an ancient Egypt scenery. There are puzzles and
17:50hidden traps, a lot of traps. The game is quite tough, actually. The games are, the graphics are really
17:58detailed, although they are really small. They are very well animated. The music suits the environment
18:09and the story. Early on, you need to hit many of the enemies a lot in order to vanquish them.
18:24You must be careful, collision detection is a bit sensitive, and if you get just a little bit
18:34closer to an enemy, you're done for. The game only provides one life, but the more you play, the more
18:44you learn how to avoid the hazards. There, arrows flying. Give me a moment there. Now, it's a very well-made game.
19:01It's really cute. It's a bit tougher, I think, than it should be, mostly because of the tiny graphics,
19:08but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a fun game. It has some good puzzles. It needs some
19:16skills. If you are a fan of the Zelda games, you'll be right at home here. I can recommend it. It's fun enough.
19:25It's made by Neon Bytes, and I think you should try it. I think it's fun, even if it is a bit rough around the edges.
19:44Let's move on now to our next section.
20:14Welcome to this week's history lesson. Now, you all know about the great war between Sega and Nintendo,
20:24but did you know that once, only once in their history, they found themselves with their back
20:31against the wall, and even though they were at each other's throats initially, they had to ally
20:39themselves in the end against the senators of the United States and many parents' organizations that
20:49accused them of excessive violence in their games. And this alliance led to the formation of the ESRB,
20:59the rating system that we know today. Now, it all started with a video game named Night Trap,
21:10a Sega CD game. Now, to be honest, it wasn't a very good game at all, but things got out of control
21:20when a certain senator named Joseph Lieberman found that the game promoted excessive violence. He managed to
21:31create a committee, and at the end they called to stand both companies that at the time were at the height
21:43of their conflict. Now, to be honest, some of the accessories did look a bit threatening, like the Light Gans,
21:56but it wasn't just Night Trap that caused this commotion. It was also another game,
22:03the Mortal Kombat. Yes, the first part of the legendary series of beat-em-ups,
22:10with all its violent gore. Now, as you know, Nintendo's version did not include any blood,
22:19but the Sega version was, well, the one to get if you were a teenager back then.
22:26Now, the companies, Nintendo and Sega, did not have the best
22:34of relationships with the SBA, which was, for better or worse, at the time, the only,
22:47let's say, authority for ratings, but they were not about to go down without a fight.
22:57They both centered their best man in order to fight against the Senate. Now, in the end,
23:08both companies were forced to ally themselves, and they created the ESRB, the Entertainment Software
23:18rating board. Now, the rating system is known today. Of course, in Europe, there is a whole different
23:31rating system, but it was the first time that companies self-regulated themselves for AIDS and
23:39content ratings for video games, and it took the heat away from video games, well, if only for a
23:47little while. You know, Doom was coming soon. Join us next time for another interesting history lesson. See ya!
24:02Well, this is it. We'll be waiting for you next week, for The Love of Retro.
