00:00Doubt the Chiefs! You can disrespect the Chiefs! You're going to have to deal with the Chiefs!
00:06It is a dynasty!
00:10We continue our divisional takes in the AFC West, focusing on the Kansas City Chiefs,
00:14whose revenge tour begins week one against their division rival Chargers,
00:19and the Chargers should be good this year.
00:20Casey coming off a very disappointing performance in Super Bowl 59
00:24as the Eagles dominated the game in New Orleans.
00:26This season, Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelsey looking to have a bounce-back season
00:29after finishing with a career-low 823 receiving yards,
00:33as well as three receiving touchdowns last year.
00:38Kimberly, can Casey win a Super Bowl with Travis Kelsey playing a small role?
00:44I think they are going into this season understanding that Kelsey has to play a smaller role.
00:52Andy Reid talked about how Travis may not know that he's getting older, but I do,
00:58and I have to be mindful of overuse, you know, monitoring the type of snaps, how often he's used.
01:05I do think that Travis, he admittedly will say, I regressed last season.
01:10He came in and said, I feel like I let guys down.
01:13He lost some weight, something I aspire to do.
01:16He lost some weight. He feels good.
01:18But I think they don't need Travis Kelsey of old.
01:22Like, every year the Chiefs offense sort of retools, and they find new ways to win.
01:28I think him on the field is paramount, but you don't need every throw to go to Travis Kelsey.
01:33You need him there in key spots, and it could be a small role, and they could still be successful.
01:38Yeah, I don't think that they can win with him having a small role.
01:43Smaller.
01:43Okay, smaller, and as you had said, smaller, but I think situationally he has to be huge.
01:49It has to be big on third down.
01:52It has to be big in the red area.
01:53It has to be big in the fourth quarter.
01:55It has to be big in two-minute situations.
01:58It can't be one of those situations where Travis is, can't get off the line of scrimmage,
02:03is just standing there watching Patrick throw the ball to a bunch of wide receivers
02:07that can't make plays in crucial situations.
02:09And that's not to say that these wide receivers won't step up this year,
02:12but he has to be big in those situations I'm talking about.
02:16And when you're talking about preserving him for down the road, you know, as far as Andy,
02:20like, monitoring his reps within games and then from week to week, he has to be big come November, December,
02:26because you know they're going to be playing January football.
02:28Yeah.
02:28So he has to be bigger then than even in September.
02:32So, look, I think maybe if they can get through the regular season and get to the dance with him playing a smaller role,
02:39but I think once they get to the postseason, he has to have as fresh as legs as possible,
02:44and they have to utilize him to really control the middle of the field and be a chain mover
02:48to complement everything else that they've tried to put around Patrick this year,
02:52which is namely a better offensive line, a lot of speed at running back,
02:57and really Xavier Worthy needing to take that next step and become Tyreek Hill light on the outside.
03:03But, Pat, look, there's no way.
03:05They just don't have someone else who can do the things that Travis can do
03:09in terms of knowing the game the way he knows it and knowing it situationally the way he knows it.
03:13He just needs to be locked in and understand that that's going to be what his role is going to be.
03:17I'm surprised he came back, but he's got a lot of pride.
03:19He all knows that he did not play well last year.
03:22They got killed in the Super Bowl.
03:23He was not a factor.
03:25He's a hauler.
03:26We all know how great he is.
03:27I'm going to expect him to come back with a little purpose,
03:30a little chip on his shoulder, and a good performance.
03:32If anybody thinks the Chiefs are not the best team in this division by far,
03:37they're not paying attention.
03:38They never lose to the Chargers.
03:40They never lose to the Raiders.
03:41They kill the Broncos at home year after year after year.
03:45They win the division with two, three games to go,
03:48which gives them a chance to handle the end of the year properly with bye weeks and all those things.
03:53You want to tell me that Buffalo, the Ravens, we can go through the teams,
03:56that they are a little more vulnerable against a real good team,
03:59and in January we're finding that out?
04:01I'll buy that.
04:02I'll buy that.
04:02But there is absolutely no way with that guy, a quarterback, who had a –
04:06listen, he's got a chip on his shoulder too.
04:08You're telling me that – and Reed, that they're not going to come back with –
04:11they're going to kill the Chargers in Sao Paulo that first game of the year,
04:14wherever they're playing.
04:15When they're playing that first game, they're playing it somewhere.
04:17They're some dopey place that the NFL is trying to put the game in.
04:20Easy, easy, easy.
04:21I mean, they will – you know I'm right.
04:24They make them travel 10 hours to play week one.
04:27Can I just –
04:28I'm just going to say this though.
04:29Okay, go ahead.
04:29Can I say the doggy's point?
04:31I was there last month in KC, sat down with Patrick Mahomes,
04:34sat down with Chris Jones, sat down with Andy Reid,
04:36and talked about the chip on their shoulder,
04:38how they got embarrassed by the Eagles in the Super Bowl,
04:40and how Andy Reid wanted to see guys come back in the offseason,
04:44who was going to take accountability, coaches and players alike,
04:47who was going to come in here and say what we put on the field last year
04:50wasn't good enough.
04:51That said, they were 5-1 in the division, 8-0 at home.
04:56And we would all agree their offense was not that great.
05:01Travis completely regressed.
05:03This season, I expect their offense – you don't think their offense is going
05:06to be better?
05:07You don't think it's the better Chiefs team?
05:08No question.
05:09So, I think the key word is smaller.
05:13Because here's the thing, if you're using him in those situations,
05:17those are key situations, but you don't have to overload him
05:21from the standpoint of snaps and all of that.
05:23Right, right.
05:23So, I think there's a way to do it where the role is different,
05:27but he's still vital.
05:29Yep.
05:29All right, let's dive into this division,
05:31because the AFC West is absolutely loaded.
05:33Specifically, I want to look at the quarterbacks.
05:35Obviously, we talked about Patrick Mahomes, the top of the heap,
05:38but then they've also got Justin Herbert, Bo Nix, Geno Smith,
05:41who signed with the Raiders this offseason.
05:44So, Lewis, coming to you on this,
05:45and you can see all the quarterbacks up there right now,
05:48is the AFC West now the best division in football?
05:51Because I've heard a lot of people are really high on the Chargers
05:54and the Broncos coming up this season,
05:56and even that the Raiders could potentially make some noise.
05:59Yeah, no doubt.
06:00Look, I think you could definitely easily see three teams coming out of there,
06:03and you're sitting there going, man, the fourth team could wind up beating
06:06some teams that are obviously division winners, I think,
06:08throughout the rest of the league.
06:10No doubt, look, Kansas City has leveled up their football team.
06:13They are better this year than they were last year in every way,
06:15namely the offensive line.
06:16When you talk about the Chargers,
06:18they have to open up this offense on the outside
06:21and become more of a vertical-throwing passing team.
06:23And they have done that.
06:24Look, they draft Trey Harris out of Ole Miss,
06:26Keiondre Lampert-Smith out of Auburn,
06:29and go along with Ladd McConkie.
06:31They've got some juice now.
06:32They've got some juice,
06:33and they arguably have maybe a top three, top four offensive line,
06:36a bunch of running backs.
06:37Justin Herbert, you know how Darbaugh feels about him,
06:40and one of the best defenses in the NFL.
06:42Let me clarify on one thing, Kimberly, before you jump in here.
06:44Is the AFC West the best quarterback division in the NFL?
06:48No.
06:49No.
06:50Now that?
06:51No.
06:53Simply put, no.
06:54I'm going to take you to the AFC North,
06:56where three of the quarterbacks there last season,
06:59you can make a case all three could have been MVP last year.
07:02Joe Burrow literally carrying that team on his back.
07:07The parallel touchdown passes in the end zone.
07:11Lamar Jackson, you can make a case that he should have been MVP too.
07:14Josh Allen winning his first MVP.
07:17That to me is, excuse me, excuse me.
07:20Aaron Rodgers, sorry, not Josh Allen.
07:22Aaron Rodgers in that division.
07:23I do think he is a good quarterback.
07:26I still think he still has potential for a playoff team.
07:31I think when I look at the AFC North,
07:33and I look at the teams that could make the playoffs,
07:37I see the same way you said about the AFC West.
07:39You can make a case for all three of those teams.
07:42I would put the Bengals, Lamar Jackson, and the Ravens,
07:46and the Steelers as teams that I would bank would be in the playoffs
07:51over, let's say, the Raiders or the Chargers.
07:56I don't understand the Justin Herbert of it all.
07:58I think he's very talented.
08:00But when we talk about these upper echelon quarterbacks,
08:02we're still waiting for the Justin Herbert to kind of take over.
08:06And we've kind of been waiting for a long time,
08:08whereas I don't think you're seeing it from other quarterbacks.
08:11Yeah, I think what will help him this year is that they know
08:15that they just can't ground and pound their way to becoming a team
08:20that's going to eventually represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.
08:23They're going to really dethrone Kansas City.
08:25They need more.
08:26Look, Ladd McConkie was a great find for them last year,
08:29but they need more than that.
08:30And that's why they went out in the draft and they hit it big
08:32with some big outside-the-numbers, down-the-field-wide receivers
08:37that can go along with what is a dynamic backfield
08:41and a top-three, top-four offensive line
08:42and a championship-caliber defense.
08:45And, look, I think the pressure –
08:47look, if you want to talk about pressure being on coordinators this year,
08:49there is no more of a coordinator than Greg Roman
08:53that has more pressure than Greg Roman has this year,
08:55given everything that they have given him in this football team.
08:58And I think for that reason, look, Justin Herbert has to take a step
09:03where I think they'll be looking at a new offensive coordinator in 2025 –
09:06or rather, 2026.
09:08And when you're looking at Denver –
09:10look, is there – let me ask you this.
09:12If you were to name –
09:12Denver's going to be better.
09:14They're going to –
09:14Is Sean Payton a top-three coach in the NFL?
09:17Yeah.
09:18There's no question about it.
09:19What he did with Bo Nix, there's only maybe one or two other coaches
09:22who could have done that, who could have brought him along.
09:24And they have a championship-caliber defense.
09:26And they've gotten better on the perimeter.
09:28They're going to the playoffs.
09:30Kansas City's going to the playoffs.
09:31The Chargers are going to the playoffs.
09:33So I think those three guys are going to level up as well.
09:37All right, Matt Doug, I need you to get in this.
09:38Well, number one, I think –
09:39I'm with Kimberly.
09:41I think the AFC North's got better quarterbacks than the AFC West.
09:44And I'm going to make that assumption.
09:45We know the Browns don't have one at the moment,
09:47that Rodgers is going to have a decent year.
09:494,000 yards last year, 20-something touchdown passes, better system.
09:53Can I ask you this question?
09:53I think he's going to be better.
09:54Who is he better than in the AFC West?
09:56Which quarterback?
09:57He's better than Geno Smith.
09:58Is he?
09:59Oh, God, yes.
10:00Is he?
10:01Are you sure?
10:02Life on the line.
10:03You want Geno –
10:04Are you sure?
10:05Life on the line.
10:05You want Geno or Aaron Rodgers.
10:07Do I want last year's Aaron Rodgers or three years ago's Aaron Rodgers?
10:11You pick.
10:11Hey, Matt, wasn't he 29th in QBR last year?
10:16I don't know what – I didn't pay attention to that QBR.
10:18He did throw up a 4,000 yards, and he 3,900 yards, Rodgers.
10:21I think Rodgers is better than Geno Smith.
10:23I think –
10:24And if Geno's not good, why would Seattle get rid of him?
10:26That's another thing.
10:26I think Molly's asking an important –
10:28Why didn't the Raiders sign Aaron Rodgers?
10:30The Steelers, you mean.
10:31The Raiders sign –
10:31No, he's saying why didn't the Raiders go out and get Aaron Rodgers
10:35Yeah, they could have gotten Aaron Rodgers.
10:36That's his –
10:37I think Molly's asking a good question, though,
10:39which is how do you quantify better?
10:41Yeah.
10:41Because do –
10:42When you talk to me about the Raiders –
10:44Like, I've been covering Geno Smith.
10:46I was there with the Jets when he was drafted.
10:48I've seen his whole career.
10:50I think he's an upgrade at quarterback.
10:52But when you talk about the Raiders,
10:53it is a lot of hoping that Pete Carroll will do what he's done
10:58throughout his career,
10:58that Geno will continue to ascend.
11:02But it's not a sure thing.
11:03This is a new offensive coordinator in Chip Kelly.
11:05This is a new quarterback, a new system, new players.
11:07So you can't really bank on the Raiders.
11:09That's my only –
11:10That's my only pushback.
11:12And Aaron Rodgers in Doggy's defense
11:13think he will be better in the system with the Steelers
11:16and the fact that he's a year healthier
11:17from last year coming off of that.
11:19Remember, Herbert was not bad,
11:22was putrid against the Texans.
11:25Also against the Jaguars.
11:26Chargers are going to be better.
11:27He was there, 27 –
11:28Well, he was so bad in the game.
11:29Mad dog.
11:30He was terrible in the game.
11:31Oh, he was terrible against the –
11:33I can't believe you're high on Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers.
11:37I'm not high on him.
11:38You asked me who had a better division with quarterbacks.
11:40So really, so straight up, you would take –
11:42right now, you take Aaron Rodgers over Geno Smith.
11:45Oh, God, yes.
11:46I'm not going near you.
11:47Lewis, what's your number in this segment?
11:48I'm not going near you.
11:49What's the date today?
11:50I'm writing them all day.
11:51Write it down for me.
11:51I got it.
11:52By the way, guys, good boy, Stephen A.
11:54He's got Twitter fingers.
11:55Oh, gosh, Stephen.
11:56Lewis, this is for you.
11:57Stephen A., do you have, like, TVU's everywhere?
12:00Find something at you.
12:00Do you want to just come on TV with us?
12:03My bad at Lewis Riddick ESPN.
12:05He's still foggy.
12:06Just getting up.
12:07Slow motion this morning.
12:08What do you mean you're just getting up?
12:09It's 1041.
12:11My bad.
12:12Especially inexcusable since you're sitting in a very important seat.
12:15Stephen A., that's not your seat.
12:16Your seat's actually mad dog.
12:17That's okay.
12:18You'll learn about the news video.
12:19There's no seat cushion in this one.
12:21He said there's only one Stephen A., baby.
12:25There's multiple Lewis Riddicks.
12:26We could not handle more.
12:27We could not handle more.
12:28This man.
12:29Just phone in.
12:31Do the show.
12:33I mean, he watches it enough.
12:34Come and do it.
12:34Phone a friend.
12:36Okay.
12:36Coming up, Tom Brady thinks player rivalries aren't what they used to be.
12:41Do we agree?
12:42And what is the real reason behind?
