Transcript
00:00The story begins by taking us back in time to the year 1995.
00:16In a quiet town in New Jersey, we meet a high school student named Chris Brander.
00:21Chris is a very sweet and friendly person, but on the outside, he is overweight, has frizzy hair, and wears braces on his teeth.
00:29Because of his appearance, he is often shy and feels awkward in social situations.
00:34He has a huge crush on his best friend, Jamie Palomino, who is a very popular and pretty cheerleader.
00:39But Jamie isn't just popular because she's beautiful, she's also a genuinely kind person who is always friendly to Chris.
00:47We find Chris in his bedroom, a place that feels very special to him.
00:51He has her high school yearbook, and with great care and a lot of courage, he writes a long, emotional message on one of the pages.
00:58In this note, he confesses his deepest secret, that he is in love with her, and wants to be more than just friends.
01:06After writing the secret note, a nervous Chris gets on his bicycle and rides to their graduation party.
01:12What's up guys?
01:14Class of 95.
01:15Hey, Chris Brander, ladies and gentlemen.
01:17Happy graduation, Chris.
01:18What's going on?
01:19I thought it was supposed to be just the four of us.
01:21Tonight's the night.
01:23Where is she?
01:24No fear, Chris.
01:25Huh?
01:25This is your chance to get out of the friend zone.
01:28Huh?
01:31Chris feels very nervous to tell her about the message he wrote in her yearbook.
01:35But just as he is about to speak, the door flies open.
01:38A boy named Tim, who is a popular athlete, and Jamie's rude ex-boyfriend, barges in and interrupts them.
01:45Jamie tells Tim to leave, and after he's gone, Chris picks up what he thinks is her yearbook to finally read his confession to her.
01:52But once again, the door is knocked, and another boy named Dusty comes in to find Jamie.
01:56Hey, Dusty.
01:59I was hoping I'd find you here.
02:01And, um, I wrote you a song.
02:05It's called Jamie Smiles.
02:07As he was about to be eager to hear what she has to say after reading it, a terrible feeling washes over him when he realizes it's the wrong book.
02:31In a mean-spirited prank, Tim has switched the yearbooks, and now has the one with Chris's private message.
02:36Full of panic, Chris rushes downstairs, but it's too late.
02:40A large group of students has gathered around Tim, who is reading Chris's very personal and heartfelt confession out loud for everyone to hear and judge.
02:48Hoping to be your boyfriend.
02:50Sincerely, Chris Brander.
02:52Holy shit.
02:54Check out his shirt.
03:03Let me talk about what you wrote.
03:05Is that really how you feel?
03:07I don't know.
03:08Yes.
03:09I love you, Chris.
03:12Like a brother.
03:13For Chris, who was hoping for romance, being put in the friend zone is the worst possible outcome.
03:20To make things even worse, the whole party appears out of the window and continues to make fun of him, pushed to his breaking point.
03:27With tears of anger and sadness on his face, Chris makes a promise to himself and to everyone there.
03:34He yells that he will leave this town, become a huge success, and show them all how wrong they were about him.
03:40The story then skips ahead ten years.
03:42We are now in sunny Los Angeles, and the old Chris Brander is completely gone.
03:47Now, he is slim, well-dressed, and full of confidence.
03:50He is a top executive at a big record label, and his life includes fancy parties and many casual relationships.
03:59I don't know why you just don't take me serious.
04:02God, you believe that, I get dumped four days before Christmas.
04:05I saw.
04:06Yeah, you did nothing.
04:08Chris Brander.
04:09I'm mad at you.
04:10Of course you are.
04:11You know, I know a song called, man.
04:16It's the week before Christmas, and Chris's powerful boss, Casey, gives him a very important assignment.
04:22He has to fly to Paris with a new pop singer named Samantha James and get her to sign a deal with their company.
04:28Samantha is a very selfish and not-so-talented singer who acts like a total diva.
04:34Chris still remembers a terrible date they had in the past, which ended with him in the hospital.
04:38Because of this, he really doesn't want to go.
04:40Even though he doesn't like the idea, Chris goes to meet Samantha.
04:43He finds her in a studio being dramatic while rehearsing one of her silly-
04:47God, I need my guitar.
05:00We need to mix the tracks separately?
05:02You guys are assholes.
05:04You're assholes.
05:05I'll switch her off, guys.
05:06Come on, you're an asshole!
05:06You're an asshole!
05:06You're an asshole!
05:07She's all yours.
05:13Hey!
05:14I can't hear you, Samantha.
05:17Can't hear you.
05:18Oh my God, I don't believe it!
05:21God, I've missed you.
05:23God, I want to lick your skin off.
05:25I'd prefer you didn't.
05:26But I want to.
05:27Don't.
05:28Later that night, they're on a private plane heading to Paris.
05:31Samantha's crazy behavior gets even worse.
05:34In a very foolish moment, she tries to heat a burrito wrapped in foil in the plane's microwave.
05:38Which, of course, starts a fire.
05:41Because of this, the plane must land right away.
05:43To Chris's shock, they land in New Jersey.
05:46Right next to the hometown he promised he would never return to.
05:49Now stuck while the plane gets repaired, Chris has no choice but to bring the demanding pop star
05:55to his parents' house.
05:56His mother, Carol, is so shocked and happy to see him after 10 years
06:00that she starts screaming with excitement and then crying with joy.
06:04Be right down!
06:14Why do you not remember Jersey being this cold?
06:17Well, it's your house is just so quaint, Mrs. Brander.
06:20I mean, Chris, you never told me you were so provinciale.
06:22I mean, isn't Chris great?
06:26All right, good job, Dougie!
06:28Oh, hi, honey!
06:30Chris feels the need to get out of the house for a while.
06:33He goes into town and sees his old high school friends, Clark and Darla, who are now married.
06:37Oh!
06:39Oh, it's done!
06:40How are you?
06:41How have you been?
06:43We're married.
06:43You're married!
06:44Married!
06:45Oh, my God!
06:46He's like, I'm going to go.
06:47My kid, he's like, brilliant.
06:50I love her.
06:50Aren't you going to introduce me?
06:53Yes!
06:55Oh, my God!
06:56That is so cute!
06:58I just want to eat you both up!
06:59Rawr, rawr, rawr, rawr, rawr, rawr, rawr!
07:01Christ, it's Chris Brander, ladies and gentlemen!
07:03Guys!
07:04Chris Brander!
07:06Finally, Chris sees Jamie Palomino working behind the counter.
07:09When she sees him, her first instinct is to hide, but he walks up to her.
07:13Their meeting is filled with surprise and ends in a warm, unexpected hug.
07:18Feeling his old worries come back, Chris tries to act cool and tells her he's just in town
07:23for one night, but he can't hide the strong feelings he still has for her.
07:27He starts to leave, but then turns back and suddenly asks her to go on a date with him,
07:32lying that his flight might be delayed.
07:34Now, he just needs to figure out what to do with Samantha.
07:37Chris!
07:38Chris!
07:39I'll pick you up at noon.
07:41I'm busy!
07:42I'm busy!
07:43You stupid dick!
07:45What's that all about?
07:46Nothing.
07:46It's just an old friend's hand.
07:48Yeah, well, let's do it that way.
07:49With the date set, Chris Brander's new problem is the difficult pop star, Samantha.
07:55Using a clever trick, he talks to her in a way that plays to her huge ego.
07:59He tells her that lots of excited fans in his small New Jersey town are dying to meet her.
08:04He suggests having a big meet and greet at the local mall, saying it would make their year.
08:09Samantha isn't sure at first, but Chris pushes hard and ends up practically dragging her to the car.
08:15You're not coming with me?
08:16No, sweetie.
08:18You need to do this alone.
08:21To an old and familiar cafe, a place filled with memories from when they were teenagers and close friends.
08:27The night goes smoothly, filled with laughter and stories from the past.
08:31Meanwhile, back at Samantha, she is deeply focused on writing music.
08:36This time, she writes about the people at the mall, watching them come and go.
08:40Her imagination is wild, but maybe her skills just aren't strong enough to match her ideas.
08:45How's it going?
08:45Fantastic.
08:47How's it going with Jamie?
08:48Treating her like every boyfriend she's ever had.
08:50Small people, they just don't know.
08:52Ow!
08:55Oh my God!
08:57I gotta go.
09:00So how's the coast?
09:01Super.
09:02And one Sugar Mountain Supreme for the chubby bunny.
09:07But this is what you always order.
09:09Yeah.
09:09The pancakes are fine.
09:11He's just kidding.
09:12What?
09:12However, when Chris says goodbye, he gets too confident.
09:16He leans in, hoping for a romantic kiss.
09:19But instead, he receives a simple, friendly hug without any romantic meaning.
09:23Take care.
09:24Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid!
09:32In a very funny moment, Jamie returns outside because she forgot her gloves in his car.
09:37She sees Chris having a total private breakdown, which leaves her completely confused.
09:42Feeling more embarrassed than ever, Chris quietly gives her the gloves and slowly rolls up the window in shame.
09:48It seems like it's just a bad day for him.
09:50To relax, he heads over to his friend Clark's dental office and vents about how everything went wrong.
09:56Looks like you picked up right where you left off.
09:59You're back in the friend zone.
10:00Later, he comes home and finds Samantha acting childishly and being silly.
10:14She may have a concussion from falling at the mall, and Chris becomes very angry at his brother for not watching over her properly.
10:21Look at her, she's having a good time.
10:23She's got her toothpaste.
10:24Where did you get the Vicodin?
10:27Mom.
10:28You said detain her!
10:29She's detained!
10:35My boss!
10:38Truth!
10:38Truth!
10:39Truth!
10:39Okay!
10:40Let's see, how's my future star doing?
10:42Great.
10:43Our number one priority, Samantha James.
10:47Awesome.
10:48Hello!
10:49Jamie.
10:50Hey.
10:51What's up?
10:52Listen.
10:52I want to apologize for earlier.
10:54Let me make it up to you.
10:55Okay, good.
10:55Do you want to go ice skating?
10:57I thought you hated ice skating.
10:59Come on.
10:59Be like old times.
11:00At the ice rink, they bump into some of Jamie's younger students.
11:03The kids seem friendly at first and invite Chris to join a fun hockey match.
11:08But Chris's spoiled Los Angeles lifestyle hasn't prepared him for skating on ice.
11:13He's clumsy and struggles to skate, which frustrates the kids on his own team, who loudly complain about how bad he is.
11:19Hurt by their words and his own failure, something inside him snaps.
11:24His aggressive and competitive side from work kicks in.
11:27She's just a child.
11:29That's a girl?
11:30See?
11:31We're getting creamed out there.
11:39It's his fault.
11:40You suck, Brander.
11:41Great.
11:41Now Chris is trying his best here.
11:44Maybe he should call it a day.
11:45Hey!
11:46Hey!
11:46I'm a really good skater, little girl!
11:48Yeah!
11:48Chris gets injured badly and is taken away in an ambulance.
12:13He lies there, unable to move and wearing an oxygen mask that keeps him from speaking.
12:18Meanwhile, Dusty sits next to Jamie and flirts with her, telling her he's liked her for years.
12:23Chris is taken to the hospital, where Clark gives him dental treatment.
12:26It's the only moment when Chris can honestly share how all of this has made him feel.
12:31Anyway, we're having a great time and then Dusty says I've had a nowhere.
12:36Hey, didn't Dusty have like a huge crush on Jamie or Chris?
12:39I mean, Dusty is a really nice guy.
12:42Yeah, well, Jamie doesn't date nice guys.
12:44I think she might be maturing.
12:45She wants a sensitive guy.
12:48More like the old me.
12:50Yeah!
12:51Okay, we're done.
12:53Now, uh...
12:54Huh?
12:55Just like your old yearbook picture.
12:56After his hospital visit, Chris returns home and walks into a strange situation.
13:01His brother Mike is giving Samantha, who's wearing only a towel, a back massage.
13:06It looks like every teenage boy's fantasy, and Mike seems to be enjoying it more than she is.
13:11Chris, annoyed and embarrassed, stops it, making Samantha angry since she was loving the attention.
13:18Dupus! Dupus! Dupus!
13:21So pretty.
13:23Honey, look what just came for you.
13:25What do you think of that?
13:26Huh?
13:27It's hugs and kisses, dude.
13:28Mom writes that on my cards.
13:30Okay.
13:31Oh!
13:31Fuck!
13:33Fuck!
13:36Hello?
13:37Jamie!
13:37Listen, I know it's Christmas Eve, but do you have any plans tonight?
13:41Oh.
13:42Hello?
13:43I'm on the phone.
13:44Really? You want to see the notebook?
13:45Yes.
13:47You were so dead, do you hear me?
13:49Whatever, dude.
13:50What are you doing?
13:50So anyway...
13:51Hello?
13:52Hey, Jamie, it's Dusty.
13:53Hey, Dusty.
13:54That night, Samantha gets dressed and packs her bags to go back to Paris as planned.
13:58But Chris insists she do one more show for her fans in town.
14:01Once again, he pulls her out of the house, mainly so he can move ahead with his own date plans.
14:06Chris, you're this pop, bubblegum sensation, and that's okay.
14:11But I am an artist.
14:13I am an artist.
14:14Hey!
14:15Hey!
14:15Let's go do this!
14:17Are you ready for this?
14:18Okay, let's do this.
14:19Yeah.
14:22You're not coming with me?
14:24Of course I am.
14:25It's open mic night at the coffee house.
14:27The coffee house is lame, dude.
14:29Come on.
14:29Oh, come on!
14:30How long does it...
14:31You're just growing into such a beautiful young woman, hasn't she, Chris?
14:37But Chris feels heartbroken when he sees Dusty walk into the house with Jamie.
14:41The evening becomes frustrating, as Dusty is now not only competing for Jamie's love,
14:46but is still just as irritating as he was in high school.
14:50Things get worse when Dusty even invites Chris's mother, Carol, to join them.
14:54Chris feels trapped in the worst kind of situation, like he doesn't belong at all.
14:58We'd love to have you, wouldn't we, Chris?
15:01Yeah.
15:02Rad.
15:03It was us.
15:04It was us.
15:05Oh, my sweetheart.
15:07How much time do we have?
15:12What happened to me?
15:13This is so gay.
15:16Oh!
15:19Dusty!
15:19Well, I had a really nice time tonight, and I hope we can do it again soon.
15:27Hey, Dusty!
15:28Except I volunteered at the hospital so that Paul could spend Christmas Eve with his family.
15:31So I kind of got to get going.
15:33While Dusty is away, Chris and Jamie finally enjoy a true connection at home.
15:37They talk for hours about their memories as best friends.
15:40They watch old videos from years ago.
15:42And each moment feels like Chris and Jamie are meant to be together for life.
15:46Chris gives Mike a simple but serious job.
16:09Keeps Samantha busy, and under no condition should she find out where Chris is.
16:13But Samantha isn't really asleep.
16:15She hears the whole conversation.
16:17Meanwhile, Chris runs into trouble.
16:19Mike had left the car window open, and now the inside is full of snow.
16:23The car won't start.
16:24He ends up riding a bicycle through the cold night.
16:27When he arrives, his hopes are crushed.
16:29Dusty is already there, once again taking center stage.
16:36Thank you, guys.
16:38Hot car.
16:38Hot car.
16:39Hot car.
16:40You guys, you know, Christmas is the time for giving.
16:44Jamie Palomino, this is my gift to you.
16:46When Jamie smiles, I realize.
16:57Jealous and fed up, Samantha loses it.
17:00In a dramatic moment, she drives a car straight through Jamie's yard, crashing into Christmas
17:05decorations, and throwing the party into complete chaos.
17:09There she is.
17:10There's the little slut you've been banging behind my back.
17:13Me?
17:14No.
17:15I'm Samantha James, bitch.
17:17Don't shut me.
17:18You're going to pay for this.
17:20I'm going to get you fired.
17:22Forgive this, asshole.
17:24No.
17:24Chris, completely humiliated, lays in bed alone.
17:34Soon after, Jamie knocks on his door.
17:36When he opens it and tries to say sorry, she tells him she's not mad and didn't come to
17:41blame him.
17:41He lets her inside, and they spend the night talking, easily falling into the same easy
17:46rhythm they once had.
17:47I'm going to give you your birthday.
17:48All right.
17:49Thank you very much.
17:50I get it.
17:51I was late.
17:52Yeah.
17:52So, is your life everything you'd hoped to be?
17:57I was right.
17:58I love it, especially the money.
18:00Oh!
18:01How about you?
18:03Let's put you in the hot seat, huh?
18:04Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
18:06I see myself getting married and raising a family.
18:09The next day, Jamie tells her friend Darla about the night, while Chris goes to Clark for
18:14advice.
18:14Jamie admits she has feelings that go beyond friendship, and Clark wisely says that Chris's
18:19bad timing and past mistakes are what's standing in the way.
18:23What happens after we sleep together?
18:25Does she move to L.A.?
18:27Do I move back here?
18:28Maybe he just wants to be friends.
18:31Maybe he's gay.
18:33God damn it!
18:34I'm right back in high school again, you know?
18:37No.
18:37Put me on the three o'clock.
18:38The sooner I get out of here, the better.
18:40You sure about this?
18:41No.
18:42She's no ordinary.
18:45You tell me.
18:46What's with the nurse?
18:47Oh.
18:48What about Jamie?
18:48What about her?
18:50Hey, are you kidding?
18:51It is gonna be sweet revenge on Jamie Palomino for keeping us in the friend zone.
18:55It's been nice seeing you.
18:56Have fun with Jamie.
18:57I know I will.
18:58Clark, always a pleasure.
18:59Look, I know you hate me, but I need to speak with Jamie.
19:02Where is she?
19:02She got off on Mr. Lee.
19:04He's offered revenge on you for putting him in the friend zone in high school.
19:07What are you talking about?
19:09Feeling hopeless, Chris gets drunk and shows up at Jamie's bar.
19:12He finds her with Dusty.
19:14When Jamie softly turns Dusty down, he storms off in anger.
19:17This leads to a huge argument between Chris and Jamie, where Chris angrily blames her
19:23for keeping him in the friend zone.
19:24I practically throw myself at you the other night and you did nothing.
19:28And now you know how it feels.
19:30Fun.
19:31Being the girl who peaked in high school.
19:32By making me jealous on purpose, you inspired me to write the best songs, you know, full
19:45of angst and hate.
19:46Realizing this isn't the life he wants anymore, Chris says no to Samantha's latest romantic
19:51offer.
19:52He finally sees how empty his life has become and understands that Jamie Palomino is the
19:57only one who truly matters to him.
19:59Look.
20:00I'll call.
20:04Why don't you like me?
20:05This is a large answer with a decent amount of love.
20:09Oh yeah, it's go time.
20:11Hey, hey, hey, it's not go time.
20:13This isn't a game.
20:14This is my life.
20:15Oh yeah, well this is my life.
20:17In one last honest effort, Chris flies back to New Jersey.
20:21He finds Jamie and dropping all the acting, tells her the truth.
20:24He's always loved her.
20:25She feels the same way.
20:27They share a deep, loving kiss, while the three young hockey boys watch in disgust, ending
20:32the movie with a funny but sweet moment.
