The first 15 minutes (approx.) of the 30 September 1995 edition of Giff Nielsen's Bullseye! on CBS affiliate KHOU Channel 11 in Houston, TX. Sorry, but this is all I have of this episode; the tape this had been recorded on got cut-off. Otherwise, enjoy!
Transcript
00:00It's brutal. It's vicious. It's time for Giff Nielsen's Bullseye.
00:15All right, beat me up a little bit. I said the Cincinnati Bengals were going to beat the Houston Oilers.
00:20What a performance by the Oilers last week. It was something that everybody around here can hang their hat on.
00:26It was simply marvelous. Chris Chandler, 23 of 26, the guy was the NFL Offensive Player of the Week.
00:34And folks, I'm telling you, it's going to happen around here every week for the rest of the season.
00:39My colleague from Channel 11, Butch Alcindor, what do you think about those Oilers?
00:44You laughed at me when I picked the Oilers last week. You see that? Wasn't that beautiful?
00:49That was something to watch in the offensive game, scoring going on.
00:52Just looking at it, obviously, Jerry Rome and his staff did an excellent job.
00:56They saw some things on the film. They took advantage of it early, and they were aggressive.
01:00And I think the difference between what happened versus Cincinnati and what happened versus Pittsburgh
01:04was that these guys caught the ball this time.
01:06They had some of those same things open versus Pittsburgh.
01:09They did not make the big plays. They did versus Cincinnati, and they had a big, big win.
01:13From Magic 102, Kim Davis.
01:15Well, we all did, of course, pick Cincinnati, and I think they'll make...
01:18No, no, no, no, no.
01:19All of us except for Giff.
01:20No.
01:21All of us except for Giff.
01:22I mean, I'm sorry. We picked Houston.
01:23That's right.
01:24There you go.
01:25You're misleading us.
01:26But I don't know that we can expect this every week.
01:28It was a great offensive performance.
01:30Jerry Rome gets some credit because the offense has taken a lot of heat.
01:33They've been banged up in terms of us banging them up because they've been playing horribly.
01:37Running game looked good.
01:38Rodney Thomas, the Aggie looked pretty good.
01:40The offense looked good.
01:41We saw some long balls being thrown.
01:43It was exciting to watch some offense for a change, even on both sides of the ball.
01:47Cincinnati, too.
01:48All right.
01:49Dr. Dan from ASEV.
01:50Well, it's good that one Aggie looked good last week, anyway, considering the weekend, Miss Aggie.
01:55And you'll remember, at the end of the show, when you picked Cincinnati by a wide margin,
02:00I said, how is it to be in the booth calling the game when you've picked the other team?
02:05Exactly how does that work?
02:06Well, let me just tell you, it was very enjoyable to be in the booth calling the game the way I saw it
02:10because even though I picked Cincinnati, I enjoyed watching the rest on the field.
02:13And what did this earlier remark mean when you said, this is going to be happening every week?
02:17You're going to be wrong every week?
02:18I didn't say that.
02:19You need to be careful about what you say.
02:22I did not say that.
02:23You just did a second ago.
02:24You said this is going to happen.
02:25Did he not say?
02:26Okay.
02:27It's going to happen every week.
02:28Yes, he did.
02:29From KILT.
02:30Wait a minute.
02:31I never said anything.
02:32I never got a shot in.
02:33We're moving on.
02:34You're snored.
02:35Good.
02:36It's great to be here.
02:37It's not going to happen every week.
02:38This was the Cincinnati Bengals.
02:40Come on.
02:41They'll beat the Jacksonvilles.
02:42They'll beat the Cincinnati's of the world.
02:44But they're going to have trouble against the real NFL teams.
02:46Yeah, they showed a lot of progress and they executed a lot better than they had in any previous
02:50game.
02:51This team still has a long way to go, I think.
02:53And I think as they go up against the better teams on their schedule, the people they're
02:56missing, the Marcus Robertsons, the Al Smiths, things like that, those weaknesses I think
03:00are going to start to show.
03:01But it was certainly something to hang your hat on.
03:03I think something for Oiler fans to get excited about, even though this team is only
03:06going to play 12 more games in this market.
03:08Any correlation between the fact that you were not on the free game show?
03:11No.
03:12None whatsoever.
03:13Moved across town.
03:15The Chronicle's Dale Robertson.
03:16Listen, give it all due respect to you.
03:18I've been covering the Oilers since 1976.
03:20That was the finest passing performance I've seen by an Oiler quarterback.
03:23It was unbelievable.
03:24This guy is a good quarterback.
03:26He's never been able to stay healthy.
03:28If we can keep him upright.
03:29Isn't it amazing how smart the coaches look when the offensive line blocks and the receivers
03:34catch the ball?
03:35I mean, it is such a simple game when you do that.
03:37And that's what happened.
03:38I'm excited because I really think this Sanders, this Chris-to-Chris combination is going
03:43to be good.
03:44It reminds me of Pastorini DeBurro.
03:45Well, Nielsen DeBurro.
03:46Well, yeah, yeah.
03:47There you go.
03:48You just keep going.
03:49Occasionally there is a couple of games.
03:50Okay.
03:51You wanted to say something?
03:52Go ahead.
03:53Why are we now all excited about this team that's leaving?
03:57Did you not see the game?
03:58Exactly.
03:59I saw the game.
04:00And before the season, and before the season, I told everyone that called our show on KSCV
04:04and KPRC that Chris Chandler would be a very good quarterback if he stays healthy.
04:08He's always performed well in the league.
04:10So I'm not surprised by his performance.
04:12But I'm sorry.
04:13I told you after the first week.
04:14I lost my heart.
04:15I have no more emotional tie.
04:17I don't care if they win.
04:18I don't care if they lose.
04:19So I'm glad to see that they won.
04:21But I'm not excited.
04:22You know, another step forward this week as the deal, the financial package now has
04:27been put together by the people in Nashville.
04:29The Oilers, are they just strengthening their position to try and force city officials here
04:34to do something?
04:35Or are they out of here?
04:37They're gone.
04:38They're gone.
04:39I think Bud has already said a couple weeks ago when the mayor said, what about an open-air stadium here?
04:42And he's like, eh, nope, it's too little, it's too late, it's too hot.
04:44I don't think, I think he's ready to go.
04:47Well, yeah, you know, I agree with Dan.
04:49Well, I agree with you to a point, but we still have to go to these games.
04:54So we might as well have some fun with it.
04:56Well, that's the point.
04:57It was fun.
04:58It was fun.
04:59That's the point.
05:00No, I mean, it's useless.
05:01Well, listen, Thomas, this team is showing signs of progress.
05:04Yeah.
05:05I think they have the right people in place at a lot of spots.
05:07Steve McNair will eventually be the man and hook up with these skilled position people
05:10like Sanders and Thomas, and I think they've got great potential.
05:13But again, bottom line is, fans here in Houston can't get too excited because they're gone.
05:18This is going to be a good team eventually, but they're not going to be a Houston Oilers team.
05:22But you don't want to tell the fans not to get excited or let everybody, because
05:25it's not really fair to the coaches and the players.
05:27They're kind of just caught up in the middle with this.
05:29And when you look like Floyd Reese and Jeff Fisher, this was really their first draft together.
05:33And you look at what they've put together.
05:35Chris Sanders, Anthony Cook, you know, some of the other, Rodney Thomas.
05:39I mean, these guys do pretty good.
05:41I'm not saying that I'm not happy for Jeff Fisher and the players.
05:44I have nothing against the players.
05:45I don't think the fans do.
05:46In fact, we're in a very odd situation in this town.
05:48Do you realize that with the baseball team, the people love the owner and stay away because
05:53of the players?
05:54With the football team, they, like the players, hate the owner and stay away.
05:58Well, I'm very selfish about it.
06:00I mean, if you have to spend the afternoon there, you know, enjoy it from an aesthetic
06:04standpoint.
06:05And I knew it was a lot of fun.
06:06He talks about not being fair to the players and stuff.
06:10I mean, but you have to think about the fans that have been in Houston all their lives.
06:13They feel they've been let down by the Oilers from all the biggest appointments.
06:16It's the Oilers owner.
06:17It's Bob Adams.
06:18It's not the players.
06:19It's not the coaching staff.
06:20And the coaches have changed and the players have changed, which we have the same Houstonians
06:23for the most part.
06:24But you have to understand how the fans can say, we've had it.
06:27Forget those guys.
06:28If I weren't paid to do it for a living, and I love what I do for a living, I'd have,
06:33I'm sorry, I have more important family time, I have more important fun time to spend a Sunday
06:39afternoon than watching a team that is deserting me.
06:42Exactly.
06:43I mean, this is like the guy that goes to his door and says, honey, I'm divorcing you in
06:46two years, but I want you to wash my clothes, pick up my underwear, and take out the trash
06:51until I leave.
06:52You know what the answer to that would be?
06:54Wash your own underwear.
06:55That's right.
06:56You can't say it on bullseye.
06:57Yeah, you can't say it on bullseye.
06:59And we can't wash Bud's underwear.
07:00It's too dang big.
07:01But you know what?
07:02We're going to come back and talk about what else is happening around the National Football
07:06League.
07:07Some very interesting stories.

09:02I like his down to earth type attitude.
09:04He knows his stuff.
09:05Dr. Frank is the man.
09:07And he's the man behind Houston's favorite hurricane tracking chart.
09:10I think everybody knows how experienced he is.
09:12Coming from the National Hurricane Center all those years.
09:15I'm Neil Frank.
09:16Pick up my new hurricane tracking chart today.
09:19This one will be ideal.

09:22Very helpful.

09:25Available now at Kroger.
09:33Okay, let's go around the National Football League.
09:35Let's target the NFL.
09:37It's sponsored by our good friends with the Houston area Ford dealers.
09:40We really appreciate them helping us with our show.
09:43And I guess the big story right now in the NFL.
09:46What is happening in St. Louis?
09:48Georgia is absolutely loving it.
09:50The Rams, her Rams, are 4-0.
09:52Can you believe that?
09:53The new Eddie DiBartolo.
09:55She got smart all of a sudden, didn't she?
09:57She is hoping that she is.
09:58It's kind of sad, though, because that's going to be great incentive for clubs to just bounce
10:03around.
10:04The Rams were a dead issue in Anaheim last year.
10:06Now they're in a new city and they're undefeated.
10:08You know, Tampa Bay's going to say the same thing.
10:10And probably our little darlings here will go, see, we leave, we win a lot of games.
10:14Well, who would have thought St. Louis would be on top of the NFC West?
10:17Not me.
10:18They are undefeated and with the 49ers losing on Monday night to the Detroit Lions, and
10:23that's two years in a row now.
10:24Last year they snookered the Cowboys.
10:27This year they did it to the 49ers.
10:29The Rams setting the pace in the NFC West.
10:31Will it last?
10:32Well, first of all, it won't last because they have a new coach and everybody's fired
10:35up and they have a change of scenery.
10:36But the big deal is Chris Chandler has been healthy.
10:39He got a mild concussion that's already starting at the end of the game Sunday.
10:42Chris Miller.
10:43No, Chris Chandler's fine.
10:45Chris Miller.
10:46You're going to panic Clarify.
10:47You're going to panic the four order fans who still care.
10:50Miller's never been healthy.
10:52He started out healthy.
10:53He started out great.
10:54He had a lot of potential when he was with Atlanta.
10:55He was doing a fine job.
10:56They can keep him happy.
10:57It just goes to show you, it just goes to show you if you don't throw interceptions
11:01and you don't fumble the ball and you take the ball away from the other teams,
11:04you're going to be successful.
11:05They have not thrown the ball over once.
11:06They're not going to be there in December.
11:08This is September.
11:09The 49ers and Cowboys will be there in December.
11:11Who will they meet?
11:12There are too many Chris's in the league.
11:13I understand they really are.
11:14Don't forget, they beat an expansion team in the Jets out of these.
11:17They haven't beaten anybody.
11:18The Jets are an expansion team.
11:20How about the worst situation right now in football?
11:23What about New Orleans?
11:24The Saints.
11:25Yeah, the Saints.
11:26Their defense is deplorable.
11:27And what about the big win?
11:29You touched on it, Rich.
11:30What about the big win by the Lions?
11:32I'd say Bontz is out of there if that kid hits a field goal.
11:35And with Barry Sanders having not a great game, they still win.
11:39On any given Sunday night, see?
11:41On any given Sunday night.
11:42Well, you know what the story is?
11:4368% of the time, the home team on a night game, primetime game, if they're the dog, they not only cover the spread, they win the game.
11:52And look what happened to Green Bay and Jacksonville.
11:55That was a ten-and-a-half point sucker bet.
11:58They ended up winning on that bet.
12:00You talk about the Rams, they're going to Indianapolis Sunday.
12:02The Colts are favored.
12:03Figure that out.
12:04I mean, I'll tell you one thing that's very strange this year, the betting lines in all of the NFL games.
12:09Very strange indeed.
12:10Isn't it interesting the Steelers right now?
12:12Two and two, not a very good team.
12:14Everybody hated Neil O'Donnell, and now Mike Tomczak comes in.
12:17And the only thing that Bill Cowher can do is put a picture in the pocket of an official.
12:23I can't blame him.
12:25And say, count, count the players on the field.
12:27Yeah, but how do you blame him for that?
12:28I mean, it's not like, he's a guy that has never done anything to make you think he's, like, classless.
12:33He's not a big jerk.
12:34He was, what would you do?
12:35I'd be livid.
12:36You can't hold that against him.
12:38The NFL officials, come on, let's compare all the sports.
12:40NFL officials are by far the worst of the lot.
12:43I mean, things like that happen on a regular basis, week in and week out.
12:47And you can't blame a guy for losing his cool once in a while.
12:49How do you not count?
12:50I mean, that really hurts.
12:51I can blame him.
12:53You know, the problem wasn't the official not counting.
12:55It was a mistake.
12:56The problem was all those turnovers that Tomczak made.
12:58I mean, that's why what he was upset about, to go up and that's not going to do any good.
13:01I think he was upset about, at that particular moment, he was upset about what had just happened.
13:05That play did not lose the ball game.
13:06At that point, you're talking halftime.
13:08It wasn't at the end of the game.
13:09Dale, I think this may be nuts because the San Diego game was last January.
13:14I think they have not recovered from losing to San Diego.
13:17I have never been in a more devastated locker room than that Steeler locker room.
13:21I mean, they were absolutely out of their minds.
13:23They couldn't believe they lost that game.
13:24Well, Neal O'Donnell, Rod Woodson, Eric Green.
13:27I mean, things like that have a lot to do with the state of that team as well.
13:30Don't they play each other this week?
13:32I think they match up this week.
13:33San Diego-Pittsburgh.
13:34San Diego-Pittsburgh this week.
13:36We're going to come back in just a few minutes and talk about baseball.
13:40Can we repair baseball?
13:42The Astros are involved in a chase right now to see if they can get into postseason play.
13:47Who cares?
13:48That's the point.
13:49Who cares?
13:50We're coming back to talk about it after this.
13:52Ford Windstar, GMC Safari, two nicely loaded family vans.
14:03Let's look at the numbers.
14:04Standard horsepower.
14:06Standard towing capacity.
14:08Maximum cargo space.
14:09Cargo space with passengers.
14:11Add in available seating.
14:13Standard fuel capacity.
14:15And the total?
14:16Proof positive that GMC Safari gives you a lot more than Ford Windstar.
14:21Including this great opera.
14:23See your Greater Houston World Class GMC Truck Dealer today.
14:29He'll have his grandfather's big ears.
14:32And his mother's curls.
14:34He's pre-wired for a great sense of humor.
14:38And against all...
