00:00Which European countries have the worst working conditions?
00:07A French economist recently slammed working conditions in France on live TV, sparking debate.
00:20It prompted a flood of reactions on social media.
00:23The economist bases his conclusion on this study from 2021 by Eurofound, an EU agency, which analyses labour conditions in 36 European countries.
00:35The methodology is robust and the results are considered credible.
00:39It includes a job quality index by country, which shows that more workers in France cited extremely strained or highly strained conditions than in most other countries.
00:50Only in Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia and Poland do more workers have extremely or highly strained conditions according to the findings.
01:00If we also consider those who cited moderately strained conditions, France ranks penultimately with only Slovakia scoring worse and Albania faring slightly better.
01:09So while this economist's claim that France ranks among the worst countries in Europe is true, it's not accurate to say France ranks 36th out of 36 countries with Albania.
01:22The index takes into account things like unsocial hours, work intensity, job insecurity and also physical risks.
01:29The issue of precarious working conditions has recently come to the fore in France after five youngsters aged between 15 and 19 were killed in the workplace in just the past two and a half months.
01:43The latest available data does suggest that after Malta, France fares worse among EU countries in terms of fatal accidents in the workplace.
01:53The latest available data does not only take place.
