00:00this month of july is a football month this tuesday july 22nd is a football day by the end
00:07of it 30 of 32 nfl teams will have reported a training camp by the end of tomorrow all 32
00:14organizations around the national football league so as we are excited to see the guys back at camp
00:20oftentimes drs it's not the players who report and are there it's those who are not because of
00:27contract disputes and ongoing conversations that has been a focus in cincinnati each of the previous
00:35three off season those contract considerations and distractions and before training camp begins for
00:42the bangles each and every summer we hear from owner mike brown once a year only once at the luncheon to
00:49kick off training camp for cincinnati in the last few times he has had to be asked about the contract
00:56situations around jamar chase joe burrow and now trey hendrickson and most notably the rookie edge
01:04rusher who remains unsigned shamar stewart enough of us let's hear from mike brown and our reactions
01:10after well if we get a player who gets involved in something like that or does something that is just
01:17unacceptable guess what i don't want to pay him i really don't if he's sitting in jail i don't think
01:23i ought to be paying him and so we say that if he got involved in conduct detrimental we'd have the
01:32right to terminate the guaranteed part for the back years he says or his agent says oh no you can
01:42terminate the guaranteed part only for the remaining part of the year in which the event occurs
01:50oddly something like this has never occurred in my memory with us i don't think it's going to occur
02:03so we're sitting here arguing over something that i think is pretty remote and i ask myself sometimes why
02:14the hell we're doing it but we are and he's doing it too and at some point we've got to put this stuff
02:20behind and just get him signed and get him up here and get him so he can be a contributor
02:27uh he needs to get underway uh soon it uh doesn't help him or us to have this strung out
02:38so that was mike brown the owner and president of the cincinnati bangles daddy's boy taking over the
02:47organization now for a very long time explaining what he believes is the holdup on shamar stewart's
02:53contract dispute drs again we have shared this so many times throughout this summer throughout this
02:58offseason the bangles have added default clauses to shamar stewart's contract that were not present
03:04for their previous two first round picks miles murphy two years ago amarius mims a season ago
03:11stewart and his reps feel it is unfair stewart is the only first round rookie of all 32 that remains
03:18unsigned at his current juncture and shamar stewart did not show up in cincinnati when the
03:24bangles rookies showed up to camp on saturday donnie what was your reaction what mike brown
03:30kind of said there it's typical it's just typical of the bangles who would probably say you know what
03:36you know it's great if we don't have a first round pick this year which means on the field i can't get
03:41that usage right out of them that we're going to need a defensive end but you know what we don't have
03:45to pay him any money like we actually went through a first round pick and essentially sold it and put
03:49money in our back pocket like i don't put that across that front office but understand this it's
03:54your problem if we have the second round picks that we're worried about whether or not they're getting
03:58fully guaranteed contracts only two were signed for the longest time that's an nfl issue like oh no
04:03we have an issue here the first round picks are all signed but your first round pick so now you're
04:07sitting in front of a microphone saying like what are we arguing about exactly what are we arguing about
04:12you should just call it what it is i'm a buffoon and i just want to save money and i'm penny pinching
04:18right now at the detriment for my organization winning on the field because no matter what i'm
04:23going to get paid so if chamar doesn't play for the cincinnati bangles this year and goes back to
04:28college and or just sits out a year the bangles go we allocated a signing bonus probably seven or eight
04:33million dollars oh my goodness that's extra profit on our bottom line here regardless of what the team does
04:38on the football field the bangles are so poorly run and this is the same organization ben that over
04:43the years was signing jailbirds left and right because they could get 10 million on the open
04:49market if they had no issues but the bangles would get them for the veteran minimum so you can't talk
04:54out of both sides your mouth it's the worst organization and i say this bangles fans i apologize
04:59to you up front at this point you have a generational triplets on your offensive side at wide receiver and
05:04quarterback and you're penny pinching your defense which means you will never win anything not because
05:08you can't be a good football team because your owner cares way more about the bottom line than any wins
05:13could ever take place on that football field we'll explain it further when hour two starts next oh man
05:20it's going to be a good second hour here on this tuesday on the early line on sports grid why football is
05:27front and center he is donnie i am bent on this tuesday by the end of today 30 of 32 nfl teams will
05:34have reported to training camp that includes the cincinnati bangles the cowboys showed up yesterday there
05:42is so much to discuss because of ownership and contract conversations and of course contract disputes so
05:50there is so much to break down here in this second hour big picture questions drs all around the
05:57national football league will dallas pay michael parsons at least he is there will cincinnati end up
06:04getting a deal done for either the rookie shamar stewart or the veteran and the nfl sack leader a year ago
06:11in trey hendrickson neither of those two guys at training camp and the bangles veterans show up today so much
06:19to break down and explain to all of you to give you the necessary context to all of your football
06:25conversations getting ready for training camp in full around the nfl exactly and when we talk about
06:31that cincinnati like front and center you're careening down a path where you are in a super
06:37bowl window fantastic quarterback electric wide receivers most organizations would capitalize on it and
06:43say all right all we need now is to build our defense up a little bit we'll bring al golden in some
06:47fresh thoughts we'll give them some pieces to use and we'll see if we can make a run at this thing
06:50and they do the exact opposite you can't miss a season with trey hendrickson because how are you
06:55getting to the quarterback so you draft a defensive end that's going to pass rush just in case maybe
07:00trey hendrickson doesn't work out and you have neither one of those guys a proactive organization
07:04who's as cheap as the bangles are ben you know what they should have done before the draft hey trey go
07:08and find the trade which they told him which was complete bogus what do they expect to get two first
07:12rounders back or they weren't going to take the trade let's just say a second and a third round
07:16pick that you could use in this draft boom fortify the defense and you draft in the first round of
07:21defensive end just pay the guy okay trey wanted more money we couldn't afford it in our budget here
07:25but we got three more players that we added to that defense to learn under al golden and away you go
07:30but instead you go the opposite direction like who wins at this honestly ben let's just say trey
07:35hendrickson never shows up for the bangles and shemar stewart goes back to college oh the bangles you
07:40show them but you hurt your football team doing the exact thing you weren't supposed to do the
07:46draft is supposed to help your football team not hurt your football team great defensive ends don't
07:50grow on trees here you have one treat him with respect like every other player is getting at his
07:56level and should be paid accordingly and if you don't want to pay him you move him because other
08:00people will pay that guy and give you compensation back so it's almost like again we get back to if trey
08:06doesn't show up hey we can find him 50 000 a day think of all the steak dinners we can have guys
08:10over the next month on trey since he's not here and boy oh boy if he doesn't show up the first week
08:15of the season we can start finding him hundreds of thousands of dollars katie blackburn over there
08:19you can actually go get a new house with this oh we won this year no you didn't you went on the
08:25football field not in your bank account as an owner come on yeah drs and it really does seem to be that
08:32as the issue because the bangles can win they had a winning record last year winning five consecutive
08:38because of an otherworldly offense if the defense was even average and you have trey hendrickson and
08:45shamar stewart in the fold hunting down quarterbacks this bangles team could contend for the lombardi
08:51trophy but at this current juncture it feels as though they might just waste away because of ownership
08:58we heard from mike brown we'll get back to all that in just a second please we heard from owner
09:02mike brown a little bit ago in his conversation around shamar stewart the 17th overall pick this
09:10previous april who the bangles drafted in the first round of all 32 first round selections
09:15stewart remains the only one that is not signed we have detailed this conversation numerous times
09:22the reason is not money as donnie has shared the rookie wage scale established more than a decade ago
09:28in the nfl you know exactly based on where you are selected in the first round how much money you
09:33are slotted for it is all fully guaranteed it is a four-year deal with a fifth-year team option
09:39it's the same thing and has been for more than 10 years in the national football league shamar stewart's
09:45reps are not saying we want a million dollars more than what the 17th overall pick got last year
09:50they're not they are only arguing with the bangles over default clauses and you heard what mike brown said
09:56that if this guy is sitting in jail i don't want to pay him they added in a clause drs that was not
10:03present for their previous two first round picks including miles murphy and amarius mims the last two
10:10years i can't understand why stewart feels slighted or personally attacked by that type of rhetoric and
10:16language in his contract you might be asking yourself do other nfl teams have these clauses in there
10:23yeah they do but the issue is that cincinnati added it when that had not been the standard with the
10:30bangles if a very shrewd franchise in cincinnati had had this been the case for the last 15 years
10:36then it probably would be a different story that was status quo in cincy it is not so you might be
10:42asking yourself well then why do they draft shamar stewart if they have some character concerns
10:47has stewart warranted that type of concern around who he is both on and off the football field
10:53no stewart has never been suspended he has never missed team activities during his time
10:59with texas a and m collegiately he has never been involved with any off the field legal issues
11:04so then why add this default clause and even if you had a sliver of a reason to be concerned
11:11then why draft shamar stewart it does not make sense the rs and the bangles their fans and this
11:18team are paying for their owner's ineptitude in the entirety of the front office yes they are and
11:25also you don't get paid when you're in jail anyway so the thought process behind like oh he just got
11:29arrested on a tuesday was gonna miss six games here you don't get paid anyway in the nfl when you're put
11:33on that restricted list and you're sitting in jail but what they want to do is come after the signing
11:38bonus which is hey i'm a good draft pick when i sign my name i'm going to get money funneled
11:43immediately into my account and they're saying if you go to jail we want to take that back well
11:47mike brown should go to jail at that point here for trying to steal from the clients here that he's
11:52actually trying to bring on board in a family type atmosphere it's simple once again everybody
11:57signed in the first round but the bangles first round draft pick and also you saw yes oh the luncheon
12:02you know what wouldn't surprise me at all like if you show up to this luncheon where the press is
12:05invited and there's a cash register right next to where you pick up if you're gonna go hey you
12:09got a pizza and a soda that's 6.99 hey i thought this was like a luncheon here to sort of talk yeah
12:14it is a luncheon but we're gonna make a profit on this and probably the press had to pay five or ten
12:17bucks to park at the stadium just to get into that press conference as well and let's go back and even
12:22rip the brown family even more remember like before it's pay core stadium it was mike brown stadium they
12:27go well we can't afford this well i gotta take my dad's name off the stadium to afford joe burrow
12:31welcome to the 21st century in capitalism here your goal is to make money but also give the fans
12:36what they're paying for as well ask any cincinnati bangles fan should you pay trey henderson yes
12:41should you remove that clause in your first round pick yes i just want to worry about the product on
12:45the football field from a terrible defense last year you go out and do the right thing sign your
12:50wideouts and quarterback and then take two steps back by not helping your defense out at all in a very
12:56tough division the fans are the ones held hostage right now it's amazing yeah in drs if it was another
13:03organization or this was a blip on the radar the first time a team entering training camp had some
13:09sort of contract dispute with a player for the first time in 15 years maybe you'd give a little
13:14bit of a benefit of the doubt to the bangles it's not the case it is the third consecutive offseason
13:20where a large contract dispute has been hanging over cincinnati joe burrow last year jamar chase
13:26and t higgins you could throw in t higgins even two years ago as well now trey hendrickson and
13:32shamar stewart the offensive guys have got their money and their deal but the defense is the issue
13:38in cincy so again common sense would say get these deals done prioritize football prioritize winning
13:48in the cincinnati front office led by their owner mike brown donnie alluded to it there his papa
13:54paul brown founded this franchise nepotism to the nth degree is the one holding back this
14:00organization we'll discuss further in the update on trey hendrickson next we continue our reactions to
14:09the start of training camp in a very murky one in cincinnati with their first round rookie shamar
14:14stewart who did not report on saturday and trey hendrickson the edge rusher star the runner up to
14:21defensive player of the year the nfl sack leader last season was 17 and a half is not set to report
14:28on this tuesday alongside the rest of the bangles veterans in drs we said before the break that if
14:35the bangles were not a franchise that had been embroiled in contract disputes and conversations
14:41to start training camp each of the last three years maybe mike brown in his comments at the luncheon
14:47yesterday or executive duke tobin who basically said we have treated shamar stewart fairly i don't
14:53know why he is listening to his agents which is completely outlandish maybe you would give them
14:59a small sliver of a benefit of a doubt but that's not the case in cincinnati maybe you want to take
15:08ownership side hey they're the owners they run the business they can put in whatever wording they want
15:14to contract they can do whatever they want with their money even at the expense of football success
15:21on the actual field the players have to fall in line all right that's your assessment i vehemently
15:27disagree but that's your assessment hey shamar stewart's gotta earn it he's a rookie he can't be
15:33asking for diddly squad all right sounds fine but trey hendrickson has proven it trey hendrickson
15:41entering each of the previous two seasons has been asking for a contract extension to find value as
15:48edge rusher salaries and a salary cap increase around the nfl has ballooned he has been asking
15:55for a new deal the bangles have been hesitant to give him one so what has trey hendrickson done drs each
16:03of the previous two years recorded 17 and a half sacks for cincinnati last year as we said
16:10leading the nfl in sacks and a runner up to defensive player of the year if any guy in the nfl
16:18has proven his worth based on what he has done on the football field it is trey hendrickson and yet
16:25he is not getting a new contract and he is not showing up to training camp today in cincy and the
16:32best part about this is is it's not hard to understand the situation like really good defensive
16:37ends are sought after so if you don't want to pay him you could easily trade him to get great
16:42compensation back but you know it's even better your defense is struggling he's already here just
16:46pay him what he's worth at this point right now that usually works a little bit better so what do
16:50the bangles do again the worst case scenario for everybody piss off the player he doesn't show up he
16:56doesn't perform and nothing goes right at this point that's what i had the issue with it's not as if
17:00like the trade market was you're only getting seventh rounders back for trey hendrickson like
17:05oh we might as well pay him at this point we don't want to pay him but we don't want to take
17:08a seventh rounder like you told him to go out and find a deal and literally you basically said look
17:12unless he brings us back the greatest return for the history of a defensive end in the national
17:17football league we're not going to move him so basically you bait and switch them right away where
17:21the agent and the player like okay let's go and find that trade destination you know they found
17:25multiple partners with decent trade options the bangles go ah we actually didn't think you would get a
17:29trade offer and this isn't two first round picks which is what we wanted for hendrickson which is
17:33never going to come down the line but again simple equations before the draft put the guy on the move
17:39get the players in camp that are cheaper younger and maybe more efficient than having just one
17:44defensive end at this point which again i disagree with i'm just going around with the bangles might
17:48thought like hey let's put a cherry on this thing to see how it works out but for me nothing makes sense
17:53with what they're doing and the worst case scenario for the team is trey hendrickson doesn't show up to
17:57camp and then maybe he shows up week six because he doesn't want to forego the entire season and he can't
18:02be eligible for free agency then he gets injured in week number seven and nobody wins at this point
18:07right now but the joke that i always have with the bangles is i'm telling you right now ben they
18:11love the fact that hendrickson isn't showing up because it's just more money that they can put in
18:16their kitty from like 50 to 100 000 a day whatever those fines are going to be racking up to be they
18:22love this they absolutely love it to the detriment of their team they don't care 17 million dollars is
18:29what trey hendrickson is owed specifically this year for the final year of his contract in cincy
18:34his annual average value 21 million dollars per year if you add in george karloftis extension with
18:41kansas city over the weekend trey hendrickson would be the 12th highest paid edge rusher the nfl sac leader
18:47is the 12th highest paid edge rusher currently based on aav around the national football league
18:54that doesn't make sense in a time where the salary cast has ballooned to a point where people are
19:00being overpaid even if they are not worthy trey hendrickson certainly is here's what mike brown had
19:05to say by the way quote dealing with him is sometimes not so easy and that's all right he's got the right
19:12to argue his case we'll try to make sense of it from our perspective we'll see i'm not persuaded that
19:18it isn't going to get done as far as i'm concerned the sooner the better well the sooner would have
19:23been back in february or march mike but hey that's neither here nor there and again drs this is not
19:31for an offensive i mean everybody would be important for a team trying to contend for a super bowl but
19:36the bangles feel pretty comfortable with what they have offensively for a team that ranked bottom 10 in
19:41terms of points allowed and yards allowed last year defensively for a team that had a winning record
19:46at nine and eight and yet missed out on the postseason what was the issue defense these should
19:53be the guys trey hendrickson first and foremost and then the rookie shamar stewart that you bring in
19:58to improve the win total for the bangles nine and a half they're still favored to make the playoffs
20:03at minus 152 but it's that 11 to 1 and 22 to 1 price drs to win an afc and a lombardi trophy
20:11that's the bangles goal and they are a team capable of doing so as we saw back in 2021
20:19and 2022 and it is a price i would be willing to bet if hendrickson and stewart end up in camp
20:27i'm just not so sure that happens anytime soon yeah we'll see if it does but again you're taking
20:33those super bowl prices and this afc championship prices banking on your defense is going to be able
20:37to get stops in december and also january and you know me ben what's one of the main talking points
20:43i like to have let's just say you go into the season and shamar stewart goes back to college
20:46who just sits out and trey hendrickson isn't a part of that franchise do we think that the injuries
20:50just stopped too like oh well all 11 guys will be healthy the entire season you go through a war of
20:55attrition this keen team can't feel that or you'd certainly perform to the capabilities that they want
21:00to and how about if you're al golden like i'm gonna make that bump up in the nflb defensive
21:04according hey al defense stunk last year we're gonna hamstring even more this year good luck with
21:08that it's just a bad vibe around the entire franchise so many times you want to start the
21:12season everybody pulling in the right direction and the bangles are a mess every year they have
21:16a slow start why because their ownership sucks that's why it should only be optimism it's not
21:24same story in dallas next the bangles not the only team having issues right now signing star
21:32edge rushers but i guess it's for a different reason because this is jerry jones and his playbook
21:38to a t welcoming in the drama each and every summer each and every off season even as training camp
21:46begins at the camp home of the dallas cowboys out in southern california in oxnard yesterday drs of course
21:54the owner of the cowboys the star in his mind jerry jones was asked about the contract conversations
22:00with micah parsons who reported the camp yesterday in oxnard but is still not happy looking for that
22:08new deal here is what jerry jones had to say about their conversations with micah parsons and what the
22:14potential snafus have been just because we sign him doesn't mean we're going to have him he was hurt
22:20six games last year seriously uh we've signed uh i remember signing a player for the highest paid at
22:27the position in the league and he got knocked out two-thirds of the year doc prescott
22:32so there's a lot of things you can think about when you just as the player does when you're thinking
22:39about committing and guaranteeing money frankly uh frankly uh should we have waited on digs and steel
22:50oh you brought them up i did
22:56man that is a jerry jones master class anytime that you can take shots at the stars of your franchise
23:06at the star the quarterback that you jerry decided to pay 60 million dollars per year making the
23:13highest paid player in nfl history and the guy that has been out there for you for four years
23:18and you have waited till this point till the 11th hour to pay him it's not like it's somebody else's
23:24fault jerry it's yours anytime you can throw them under the bus drs to start off a new season
23:30why not do so look in the nfl like you get paid at the top of your position it's what they do
23:37you pay them sooner than later you save money on your salary cap dallas doesn't like to do that
23:42now there is something to be said about jerry jones because he is right about one reason
23:45hey why don't i just get the best out of them and they're on their contract and we'll deal with
23:49it when the contract is actually up because in football you do get hurt but under the same thing
23:53you can't be a hypocrite and say well it's a sport where everybody gets hurt why then jerry why did
23:57you pay anybody on your roster why'd you pay any of the 53 guys like because there's a chance they
24:01can get hurt and why not just ride it out and say i'm going to sell the dallas cowboys because
24:05my team can get hurt at any time like that's a good business mood for you jerry you can't pick and
24:10choose at this point and you can't also bend the backup linebacker the third string guard he can't
24:17hold down and say i deserve more money because he gets cut nobody cares on the football team because
24:20no impact you can't do it with your superstar players and say we'll be just fine if michael parsons
24:26misses six games a season holding out and he's not happy about it again it's pulling in the right
24:32direction to start a season with the common goal saying we want to win a super bowl everybody in
24:38camp everybody paid everybody works for that goal if you are michael parsons understanding you will be
24:43paid more than any defender in the history of the sport as long as your leg doesn't fall off over
24:49the next couple weeks that weighs on people that's your energy that's your mo the minute you get paid
24:54you're in you're all in as a soldier in that organization with the common goal of winning
24:58things but when people start to say i got to get mine before i get out on that football field or
25:03i'm being the good soldier i played last year i showed up to camp i showed up to otas i'm here for
25:08you jerry and then you hear like oh we work things out only to not work things out and we'll let this
25:12play out at this point like nothing gives you good vibes and also mike is a good dude he's not in
25:18trouble with the law he crushes pockets and wrecks game plans those are the guys you're supposed to pay
25:23he also only missed four games not six jerry as you claimed yesterday last season and outside of
25:31that drs he has been sensational an all pro performer in his first three years in the league the defensive
25:38rookie of the year and a first team ap all pro in each of his first two years even last year only
25:44playing 13 games he still had 13 and a half sacks i do believe he has had at least 12 sacks recorded
25:51in each of his first four years but again much like mike brown in the bangles front office likes
25:57to shortchange people and act in shoddy and poor business ways jerry jones is also poor at what he
26:03does business wise but for different reasons because he doesn't have financial foresight to pay
26:08michael parsons last offseason average the deal over the final two years of his rookie contract and
26:14make michael parsons the highest paid non uh quarterback in nfl history at 34 million dollars
26:20if he had to do that now it would be more than 41 million dollars per year when tj watt just signed
26:26last week but donnie this is what he does he did it last year for both cd lamb and dac prescott at the
26:3311th hour deep into august as training camp and the preseason nears to a close that's when jerry jones
26:41acts so we can expect the same this year for michael parsons what it means for the calvins next
26:47live right here on the early line on sports grid it is a tuesday at the end of this tuesday july 22nd
26:5530 of 32 nfl teams will be in training camp but of course drs it's the guys who do not report
27:03because of contract disputes and perhaps those that even showed up to training camp that night might not
27:09be working out on the first day of on-field activities like michael parsons for the dallas
27:14cowboys in oxnog we'll talk about the bangles a little bit further in just a matter of moments but
27:20drs although i disagree with jerry jones and his negotiating tactics throwing his players under the
27:26bus taking unnecessary and incorrect shots at them and how long he waits to actually pay them when it
27:33would be financially beneficial to jerry's own pocketbook if he did so earlier he often does
27:40fork up the cash and he has no issue making sure it could be the richest deal you have seen for
27:46insert exposition in nfl history so i ultimately do believe at some point even if it's early september
27:55before the cowboys kick on that opening thursday night of the year thursday september 4th jerry jones will
28:01pay michael parsons what he is deserving of as one of the highest if not the highest non-quarterbacks
28:08in nfl history like sometimes you relate to like college football and how they do like the recruiting
28:13rankings where it's like hey if i haven't committed yet i'm the hottest star across the planet here
28:18every publication is going to be talking about my whereabouts what schools i'm going to set up where
28:23i'm going on trips and did i make a silent commit at this point the reason i bring that up is not from
28:27michael parsons perspective but jerry jones feels like the longer you talk about the dallas cowboys
28:32and whatever controversy the good of it is for the dallas cowboys the number one brand in professional
28:36sports in the history of professional sports on this planet it's almost like he enjoys it because
28:41yeah it might cost me a little bit more money but that's cheap money compared to 90 straight days of
28:46me talking about michael parsons in the press and leading sports center and every publication out there
28:51and when it's getting done and then when it gets done the richest contract ever signed from a
28:55defensive end slash quarterback slash wide receiver we've ever seen here it seems like that's the
28:59better business for the dallas cowboys here does it make sense to me no and also from the understanding
29:04of the offseason where you know mike is going to be the highest paid guy then all of a sudden you get
29:08other contracts after coming in which only raises the price of what michael wants and then the hey
29:13forget about your agent forget about steven forget about the rest of the organization just come in
29:16my office we'll talk it out yep got the deals worked out months later it's still not worked out
29:21that's what doesn't make any sense at this point like was it a silent commit here from you know
29:25michael parsons in march like yeah you know we'll get that deal done and jerry goes hold off we got
29:29the money for it here's what it's going to be hold off a couple months it's better for business here
29:32and then we'll take care of you like is that the madness schemes that we're building behind the scenes
29:36just to keep the dallas cowboys here in the spotlight i don't think that's the case but there is
29:41no case for michael parsons waiting a year and a half to get a contract extension that he does deserve
29:45from the richest you know sports conglomerate the world has ever seen nothing makes sense
29:51again through uh four guys now make more than 35 million dollars at the edge crusher position all four
29:58sign those extensions this offseason nobody more than tj watt 41 mil per year miles garrett 40 mil per
30:05year daniel hunter and max crosby 35.5 and 35.6 million dollars crosby 35.5 35.5 35.6 for daniel
30:15hunter michael parsons is deserving of that as is trey hendrickson and i know the jury is good for it
30:22as well again just in a slightly different way of negotiating could he have paid michael parsons
30:2834.5 million dollars per year last year and made him the highest paid ed rusher in nfl history but got
30:35it at a discount and averaged it out over the final two years of parsons rookie contract yes did he
30:41choose to do so no do i think what donnie is alluding to that he loves the drama in dallas
30:46absolutely the rs for the cowboys our question is never will they have regular season success last
30:54year jack prescott was injured but the highest paid qb in nfl history as jerry jones was alluding to
31:01did not play the full season last year but when jack prescott has been out there seven of the nine
31:08years he has been in the nfl he has played at least 12 games dallas has gone over its win total
31:13this year of seven and a half with at least eight wins and in five of those seven years double digit
31:19victories for the cowboys including two divisional titles in the last four years in the nfc east so i
31:26don't think the micah parsons contract dispute and distraction is going to hold the cowboys back
31:32from going over seven and a half do i think the circus that jerry jones has created with the cowboys
31:38as a team its branding and its notoriety almost to a celebrity status holds dallas back from winning
31:45actual meaningful football games aka playoff games nfc championship games and super bowls yeah i kind of
31:53do yeah and usually that does like again camaraderie here using your salary cap the right way and what i
31:59mean by the right way is yes they're going to eventually pay those guys but what happens if
32:03you have the foresight to pay dac earlier if you have the foresight to pay micah earlier and they
32:07go hey man we got enough left here in the kitty that we can actually buy an extra defensive end
32:11defensive tackle linebacker safety cornerback here with money left over and i understand there is a
32:17point to sometimes you want to wait like i don't know if his legs are bulky or his knees bulky i don't
32:21want to pay him right now let's get at least another season out of him it's not the case with micah
32:24parsons he's not walking around limping saying like oh my goodness it's cartilage no cartilage left
32:29either one of his knees and let's just say in two years it might give out it just doesn't make
32:33sense business wise but you see the dallas cowboys and that seven and a half win total i do think they
32:37make the playoffs and i do think they lose in round one of the playoffs that often should move
32:41offensive line is decent you have a semblance of a running game this year which last year you went in
32:46with absolutely nothing george pickens comes over the wide receiver with cd lamb like that often
32:50should be able to cook but the question is now are you cooking with grease or are you cooking with
32:55low temperatures because micah parsons isn't happy to get his money yet come on now jerry make the
33:00right move sign this guy let's get on with it and make the playoffs the offseason should be a time
33:06of only optimism this guy is in the best shape ever we had a great offseason throughout minicamp
33:13and voluntary otas oh yeah that second year guy taking a leap in his third year our veteran guys are
33:19happy they're leading the charge they're leaders in the locker room that is not the case for dallas
33:24basically every year and the same story in cincinnati donnie i have said numerous times the
33:30first offseason bet that i made in the nfl was the cowboys over the win total of seven and a half but i
33:36would never bet your money or my worst enemy's money on the cowboys to win a super bowl at 47 to 1
33:42and there's been a lot of changing parts in the last three decades head coaches staff players
33:49quarterbacks defenses for the dallas cowboys but one thing has remained and that is jerry jones so
33:57when there are issues constantly that you cannot just deem a coincidence for an nfl franchise that
34:03has its own standards of lombardi trophy or bust and they are failing to meet that expectation
34:09each and every time you kind of have to look at the common denominator and it's the same story in
34:15cincinnati mike brown has been dealing with this the bangles front office by the way it's not like
34:21duke tobin is in year number three he's been there for more than two decades under his buddy mike brown
34:27who inherited this franchise from his father paul that started this franchise back in the afl days
34:33of 1968 they have dealt with this the rs the last three off seasons which coincidentally line up with
34:41when after the bangles made it to back-to-back afc championship games with a ton of talented guys
34:48on rookie deals joe burrow t higgins jamar chase and trey hendrickson on his first contract in cincy
34:57when the guys should have been rewarded for historic performances and yet have not so now three consecutive
35:04off seasons the bangles have dealt with large-scale contract disputes and what have happened the previous
35:10two the bangles have missed out on the playoffs not living up to expectation either exactly it's
35:17simple it's everybody pulling in the right spot here to get the season off with the good vibes not
35:21worrying about yourself like we don't need to hear about t higgins you know family his mom all upset
35:26with the contracts and reading the tea leaves on some mysterious tweets that come out just pay these
35:30guys the offense will be cooking in cincinnati the defense is what we're worried about here same thing
35:35in dallas we're not worried about the offense we're about the defense because it's micah parsons
35:38these are simple fixes here really good football players getting really good contracts that's the
35:43name of the game in the nfl stop fighting this urge and costing yourself because every single day that
35:48goes by the price of that contract just went higher get the deal done stop procrastinating get in camp
35:54let's have some fun and start worrying about wins as opposed to wins on a contract and wins by the way
36:01success by the way will bring you even more money we need to be in a front office welcome to our number
36:09three our third and final live right here on this tuesday on the early line on sports grid he is donnie i am
36:16ben one more hour to go plenty of baseball breakdowns on this full slate tuesday around the bigs and also
36:22plenty of football conversations as 30 of 32 nfl teams report to camp by the end of today some have
36:31already reported to training camp plenty of others join the fold on this tuesday two more to go to
36:37round out the entirety of the national football league tomorrow it will be the atlanta falcons and in
36:42latrobe the pittsburgh steelers it is a month of football and plenty of contract conversations drs to
36:50be had here on the early line even an hour number three i like the day-to-day of the you know races that
36:55you get from the quarterbacks here in training camps also the beat writers who looks good who doesn't
36:59look good interception tallies for quarterbacks which quarterbacks were performing well in the
37:03red zone as opposed to seven and seven seven on sevens so when you take a look at the totality
37:08of football it's nice that it's here but we do hit a little bit of a lull like next week again
37:12thursday night i'm going to be excited to watch this because football is back on our tv the pageantry
37:16the hall of fame you know it's all good stuff then you want to see like your favorite team like for
37:21me is the philadelphia eagles you want to see them play in preseason game number one but i got to tell you
37:24this too like zach taylor when they had that luncheon yesterday for the bangles they've started slow over
37:30the past couple years you know zach taylor actually said we're looking forward to playing more of our
37:35starters in the preseason which i do agree with nobody wants to lose a starter playing a meaningless
37:40football game i get that but football you have to ramp up the opening day where some people just
37:44hey you know what we'll see where it is we're healthy opening day oh no it takes us two to three
37:48games to get our legs under us and our wind here you want to build those calluses up not by doing
37:53stupid oklahoma drills in the middle of the summer with superstar athletes but you do need to play
37:58football and get your win by playing in some of these preseason games so if that's the case
38:02in cincinnati that's helpful you just need these superstar players to actually be playing in those
38:06games here which means they're not on the sideline because you want them to be they're on the sideline
38:10because they want more money is it a lack of inactivity drs or a lack of activity throughout camp and
38:18the preseason that has been holding the bangles back probably but it's also probably due to the fact
38:23they're not getting paid in the way that they should by ownership in cincy and that front office
38:28and we are seeing that on display once again for the bangles this has been a continued and almost
38:35tried and true story the last three four five years and certainly the significant stars for
38:41cincinnati the last three joe burrow t higgins jamar chase trey hendrickson and now throw in the first
38:47round rookie in shamar stewart so who will play for the bangles this season will we see trey hendrickson
38:54will we see shamar stewart will we see both will we see neither we wanted to hear from all of you
39:01it's time now for fade the public
39:02four options for you at sports grid on twitter who will play for the bangles this season trey hendrickson
39:17himself shamar stewart himself both or neither most of the public more than 48 of the votes drs
39:26saying both will eventually play for the bangles at a certain time this season probably from the
39:33start i would assume that people voting both are thinking at least that's the way i looked at this
39:39question but the second most selected is neither that the bad blood between trey hendrickson and the
39:45bangles front office that the default clauses added into stewart's rookie deal are too much to overcome
39:52which way did donnie vote in the fade the public poll i voted for both now hear me out on this
39:57cooler heads should prevail like you ever hear the term meet me halfway like we're at that point now
40:02yeah like for shamar stewart meet me halfway if you wind up on death row yeah we're probably not going
40:08to pay you and that call is going to be out if you do a spin like rasheed rice for 30 days we'll still
40:12pay you trey hendrickson you're not going to get all that money in years that you want you know what
40:16you're making 17 let's bump you up to 22 million play this year i guarantee we'll trade you next
40:20all season meet me halfway that's the only way around at this point right now so i voted both
40:25but i'm actually surprised that it's that who won't play for the bangles this season like both would be
40:30in the lead i'm surprised the public including myself did back it at close to 50 but i do think
40:35that's right football players don't want to miss opportunities on getting paychecks trey hendrickson's
40:40going to make a lot of money regardless this year he doesn't want to miss out on that money because
40:43you can't make that back and the same thing with shamar stewart does he really want to go back to
40:47college where then if he does play college football he's now under contract once again with
40:52the bangles for another year on his draft rights or does he want to just sit out an entire football
40:56season and reappear in the draft like that doesn't seem like that's going to happen so i think both
41:01of them will play for the bangles this year i also voted both i think ultimately these deals will be done
41:07even if it takes a few weeks into training camp and we're having these conversations on august 22nd
41:13not july 22nd let's clarify a few things here first for shamar stewart he is not eligible drs to play
41:20college football this upcoming year anytime you declare for the nfl draft you forego your collegiate
41:26eligibility he would have to sue the ncaa and the powers to be to get more college eligibility that
41:34probably wouldn't happen and probably would not happen in a timely fashion for him to play at texas
41:38much has been reported that he is working out at a and m facilities in college station he can work
41:44out there he cannot play for texas a and m in 2025 unless legal action was taken that probably not
41:52likely what you mentioned though as well shamar stewart can just sit out the entirety of this
41:57season i believe it is by week 11 if the rookie contract is not signed it's over by that point he would
42:03have to re-enlist or re-enroll or re-declare for the 2026 nfl draft he is eligible to be selected
42:11by the 31 other nfl teams not name the bangles and does since he gets some compensatory pick
42:17because of it no they're screwed losing their leverage in that situation as well as for trey
42:24hendrickson reports the rs are saying the bangles and hendrickson still remain very far off in terms of
42:32the financials of what hendrickson is asking for and what the bangles front office has offered
42:38namely in guaranteed money again five or four excuse me edge rushers around the nfl make more than 35
42:47million dollars per year max crosby daniel hunter miles garrett tj watt in reverse order all signing
42:54their extensions this offseason in terms of the guaranteed money tj watt just got 108 million
43:01miles garrett more than 123 million dollars guaranteed daniel hunter 54 million dollars
43:09guaranteed but that's only around a two-year deal if i am not mistaken and max crosby 91.5 million
43:17dollars guaranteed so trey hendrickson not happy with the guaranteed money that cincinnati is offering
43:24at this moment he told montai teo who is live on air right now for good morning football of the nfl
43:30network that the bangles offer is atrociously low so still some negotiations have to find that
43:38middle ground drs as you were alluding to yeah and it's hard to butt heads with the bangles because
43:43like it's not a game of chicken it's like oh last man the blink the bangles won't blink if you sit out
43:49they will make more money and that's their end goal not championships let me count them on my finger
43:53how many or how many fingers do you have that you can count the bangles championships how about a fist it
43:58means nothing they have no championships for the bangles because of how they run their franchise
44:01instead of maximizing their talent they maximize the bottom line at that point those are the issues
44:06that you have like trey hendrickson is deserving of a new contract but they'll tell you oh you get
44:11what you're paid and that's what it is and also an organization that sets the precedent year after
44:15year and doesn't cave because they figure it's better for the negotiations down the line if i cave to
44:20trey hendrickson now a superstar is going to come along and hold us again over the rail saying i need to
44:25get more money which is not the way you're supposed to think about it superstar players can do that
44:30because they help your team win football games and they're asking for the money they deserve if you
44:34don't want to pay them that's on you but that's going to suffer once you get back to the football
44:38field the bank like carson palmer yeah hey i don't like to be here we'll sit on the sideline we
44:43won't pay you we'll save money even if it hurts our football team they don't care it's what they do
44:47yeah we'll see when that leverage gives out more on the early line next
44:53we'll see you next time
