00:00I mean, what's the difference to me? If you're comfortable with your socks rolled down, why shouldn't you be allowed to wear it?
00:07I mean, I know it's not very tidy looking, but I think you should be allowed to do that.
00:11All right, we'll go to extra time. Republic of Ireland and Romania scoreless.
00:16We rejoin Alan Perry and Ron Atkinson.
00:19Nice, really keeping their morale going. There's been a sapping, draining afternoon in 90-degree heat here in Genoa.
00:30Now they've got another half an hour to complete, and then possibly the drama of penalties.
00:35They can't actually start the match yet, incidentally, because Lund, the captain and goalkeeper of Romania,
00:43was, I think, changing his boots out on the touchline.
00:45Then you just saw him disappear at the bottom left-hand corner of the picture.
00:48And he, therefore, has not yet taken his place between the sticks.
00:54So, no goals after one and a half hours play here in Genoa.
00:59And they're playing for the right to meet Italy or Uruguay in Rome in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
01:07It's been a reasonably even match with Ireland creating the better of the chances.
01:12Romania having quite a bit of possession and forcing the best out of this man, Pat Bonner, on at least two occasions.
01:18But I would say that if either side had deserved to win over the 90 minutes, it was certainly Ireland.
01:23But it's a new ball game now, and fatigue, as much as anything, will come into play.
01:27Who's the strongest, as well as who's the best?
01:31Quinn with the first little back header.
01:32But the free kick was given, even before the ball dropped, and it's been given to Ireland.
01:43Well, is this the position, I wonder, for a Kevin Sheedy special?
01:46He has not unleashed his best free kicks as yet in the game.
01:50And Steve Staunton, the number three, might also be there to pose a problem for Lund.
01:56I'd like to see him try the little one, where Staunton goes over the ball and goes down the side of the wall.
02:00They've done it very, very effectively on a number of occasions.
02:04But having said that, Heidi looks as if he's now blocked off the space.
02:08Townsend is the number 13.
02:10Staunton the number three.
02:13Staunton it is who takes it.
02:15Not a bad effort.
02:18I think Lund had it covered all the way around.
02:21But it was nicely curled by the 21-year-old Liverpool full-back.
02:27It's not a great idea.
02:29Not perhaps enough pace on to beat the team.
02:31Keep that time to see him get a person.
02:33But a nice, nice little party for him.
02:36Otario for Romania.
02:37And he was fouled by Quinn.
02:39Remember, the Republic of Ireland playing in the World Cup Finals for the first time in their history.
02:48Romania have never been further than this stage of the competition themselves either.
02:52So it will be new ground for whichever of these teams makes it.
02:56And we have got to have an outcome here.
03:00No replays after extra time.
03:03If the teams are still deadlocked, they'll take penalties.
03:06Good run here by Sabu for Romania.
03:13Helped out to Otario.
03:16Kline on the left flank.
03:21Lupu the substitutes.
03:26Haji the danger man.
03:27Nice little reverse ball and it goes back to Haji.
03:34And there's danger here.
03:35And Haji's earned a good position to shoot.
03:38And Bonnet only just got there.
03:42Well, he has been a supreme player.
03:45And he's brought the very best out of the Irish goalkeeper.
03:48Talent takes the ball short from the corner and finds Haji again.
03:53And always danger when he lines up a shot.
03:55But even he was a bit optimistic then.
03:58But what a player he looked like.
03:59Very much so.
04:00I mean, that's the end of a good bit of him to play with Lupu.
04:05Possible fumble by Pat Bonnet.
04:07But I think he was quite happy just to turn the ball around.
04:09Now, the Republic are going to make an interesting substitution here.
04:14David O'Leary, the veteran.
04:17Arsenal man coming on.
04:19And Steve Stormton, the youngster, has gone off.
04:22Now, that's interesting.
04:23Unless Stormton was injured.
04:25Huge cheers around the stadium for David O'Leary.
04:28He's had his disagreements over the years with Jack John, the manager.
04:31But the public of Ireland have never lost faith in him.
04:34He's been a great stalwart for them.
04:36What do you reckon that's all about, Ron?
04:38I'm just...
04:38It's got me a little bit confused, actually.
04:40Because David O'Leary wouldn't profess.
04:42He's gone into the left-back slot.
04:44I didn't think Stormton looked injured, actually.
04:46He was playing very, very well.
04:48So, looking at him now.
04:49Whether...
04:50I'm just looking.
04:50He's against Hadji now.
04:51I wonder if he's going to get a man-to-man marking job on Hadji.
04:54I can't really see any of the logic for it.
04:57Anyway, Ireland back in possession.
05:02Good play by Townsend.
05:03Oh, and it's a lovely little ball as well for Sheedy.
05:06And still Sheedy.
05:07Great run by Sheedy.
05:08He's still got it.
05:09Quinn and Cascarino in the middle.
05:11How did that?
05:13Oh, dear, dear.
05:15Could it be one of those days when the luck of the Irish was an inappropriate phrase?
05:20They've had none in front of the goal.
05:22But that's what it was all brought about by great persistence here by Sheedy.
05:25The magic left foot's going, yeah.
05:27Just managed...
05:28Klein just manages to get across and defend.
05:30It happens a bit on luck of his little lob back header.
05:33That's a sweet ball.
05:34Anything else, it's a goal.
05:36Pity wasn't another three or four inches bigger.
05:37He could have got over the top of that.
05:38I'm just thinking, pity it wasn't either Quinn or Cascarino, who are both six foot and over.
05:44Well over in Quinn's case.
05:46Yeah, what has surprised me a little bit, though, now?
05:47We've all been thinking that Ronnie Whelan would get some sort of a run in extra time.
05:52Now, all of a sudden, of course, he's not going to get on the game.
05:55Now, Ireland have used both their substitutes.
05:58Cascarino came on in the first half instead of Aldridge.
06:00And now he've had O'Leary instead of Stormton.
06:04The only other thing I can think of, you know, Alan, is Haji tends to get very dangerous
06:09when he comes out on this outside right position and cuts across.
06:12We just saw examples of it where he cuts across the line of people.
06:15There's the usual foot-up incident.
06:17Okay.
06:18I just wonder whether David O'Leary, being a natural right footer,
06:21is being played on the left-hand side to prevent him coming inside.
06:26Well, Ireland get the free kick, and their skipper,
06:28an inspirational figure in defence today.
06:30Mick McCarthy will take it.
06:34Hit high towards Cascarino, who climbed well.
06:37And the ball breaks to Townsend.
06:39Wasted ball by Townsend.
06:42Well, Ireland get it back.
06:43Morris.
06:45McCarthy.
06:47He's looking for Quinn then, but well met by Klein.
06:50Townsend back in again.
06:52Cascarino's there.
06:53Missed his header.
06:55Sabu for Romania.
06:59It's a useful little ball in for Rotario.
07:07Klein.
07:09Rotario.
07:12Like it goes to the tall figure of Lupescu.
07:16Without a shadow of a doubt, Alan O'Leary's briefest.
07:19Make sure Haji doesn't play.
07:20He hasn't taken his eyes off him since he came on the field.
07:24But if he can do that, he's some player.
07:26Because Haji has looked exceedingly dangerous throughout.
07:30And here he is again.
07:32In time, a free kick has been given for a little trip that took place off the ball.
07:36On Lupescu.
07:37On Lupescu.
07:38On Lupescu.
07:38Bonner organises the players in front of him for this free kick.
07:53And Romania are going to make a substitution now.
07:56Daniel Timofti is going to come on.
07:59He has seen it, I think.
08:01So there will be a delay before the free kick is taken, I would think.
08:05And Sabu is the player to come off.
08:10He won't let him take the free kick until the substitution is completed.
08:14Sabu looks a little bit reluctant.
08:16But off he goes for the number 16.
08:18He scored two goals on his international debut against Egypt.
08:22And has three goals in seven international appearances.
08:25Just 22.
08:25Short for Haji.
08:45Quinn made the interception.
08:46A pin on the knee which looked painful.
08:48Haji has gone on with the ball.
08:52He's got a few really backwards as he's played.
08:54And he's trying to tie it with his team-mate's fault.
08:56In time, Quinn has gone down clutching that knee.
09:00Which he really jarred in that collision with Haji.
09:03And remember, Ireland have used both their substitutes.
09:06Indeed so of Romania.
09:11You can feel that.
09:13And Quinn certainly did.
09:20And anxiety.
09:21On the Irish bench.
09:24On his setters on the left.
09:26And Charlton.
09:26And the right World Cup winner.
09:27Remember all those years ago as a player in 1966 for England.
09:33Now the adopted king of Ireland.
09:35Got everything he's done for their football.
09:38And football.
09:39A sport that normally takes second place to Gaelic football.
09:42And rugby union as well.
09:44In the Irish Republic.
09:45What a transformation Charlton has brought about.
09:54Sheedy for Ireland.
09:56And I think the ball had gone out of play.
09:58Either that or he's given a free kick.
09:59In fact, he has given the free kick.
10:01To the delight of the Irish fans.
10:04And it was for this challenge.
10:06On Kevin Sheedy.
10:07Quite right that he gave the free kick as well.
10:09Although he missed his man.
10:10The intent was certainly there.
10:11High ball played up towards Quinn.
10:19And he won it well.
10:21Sheedy.
10:22Good little ball in for Quinn.
10:23Quinn has made the room.
10:24But just didn't have the legs to get there.
10:29And here's the new substitute.
10:31Tim Ofte getting his first touch.
10:33And a good ball for Haji.
10:34Haji is quite happy to take people on.
10:39It's a good little ball out as well.
10:42To Lupu.
10:43And the cross coming in from Klein.
10:44Met first time by McGrath.
10:48Corner to Romania.
10:49And now Morris has gone down injured.
10:51And I wonder if some of this is cramp.
10:53And sheer fatigue now.
10:54We're seeing players going down.
10:56Like nine pins as they say.
10:58And it's not surprising.
10:58It's very, very hot.
11:01It's very difficult to really appreciate that fact.
11:04I'm sure.
11:05Sitting at home on what sounds like an awful British summer's day.
11:08It had to be awful.
11:08The start of Wimbledon.
11:10But it's...
11:11Well, it's absolutely boiling here.
11:14Romania attack again.
11:15And dangerously so.
11:16Oh, and Andoni got a free header.
11:19Tim Ofte shot blocked.
11:21Balint shot blocked.
11:22And in the end, Rotario hit it wide.
11:26Dangerous moment though.
11:27Dangerous moment.
11:28Good ball in from the corner.
11:30Kept in the box by the Romanian central defender.
11:34It looked very much as if Tim Ofte was going to score with his first shot.
11:37But full marks...
11:38Oh, that's just the final shot going wide.
11:41But Townsend did remarkably well to go and close the shot out from Tim Ofte.
11:44Tim Ofte looks stitched on to have given them the lead there.
11:47Signs aren't good at the moment for Ireland.
11:49And at the moment, they're getting all the good possession now, Romania.
11:52And they're really...
11:54I don't say swamping Ireland, but they're certainly dominating the game.
11:59But it's still 0-0.
12:01We've had 11 of the 15 minutes of the first period of extra time here in January.
12:08They just happen to be joining us.
12:10It's still 0-0.
12:11They're playing for a place in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
12:14Quinn Fyland.
12:18Morris.
12:19Good running by Houghton.
12:22And he's onside.
12:24Not long for Sheedy.
12:26And Sheedy's done well.
12:27Oh, what a shame.
12:29Just couldn't keep it in play.
12:31Kevin Sheedy.
12:32Hope he can't lip read.
12:34We'll share his thoughts at that moment.
12:37He'll be disappointed because knowing he's got this great skill.
12:40And coming round the back like that.
12:42He'll have fancied himself to have taken the defender on and give Ireland a good situation.
12:45But of course, after that, as you say, after they've been playing so long, tiredness does creep in, both physical and mental.
12:55Yes, the pace of the game has noticed, noticeably, and quite understandably slowed.
13:02And yet, this fellow doesn't look as if he's broke sweat yet.
13:08There's a guy who should be fresh.
13:13The substitute Timofti played on to Rotario and on again to the other substitute, Lupu.
13:19And there's danger here.
13:20And also, Hargey arriving in the middle.
13:23Oh, and the cross.
13:25Almost one-footed Bonner.
13:26As Klein went down the left and he took a deflection.
13:30That could have really fooled everybody.
13:32Yeah, I think Morris is asking for a goal kick here.
13:35But it looked very much as if he did make a good defeat.
13:36He did.
13:37He's done well for his side there.
13:38He's defended that situation very well.
13:40Just as Hargey was arriving on the near post in a dangerous position.
13:44Corner to Romania.
13:47Taken short.
13:48Back to the danger man, Hargey, again.
13:56Klein still out there, having taken the corner.
13:59Lupu.
14:06Romania go all the way back into their own half.
14:09The Irish fans whistling and booing.
14:12Yeah, but they're not doing that from a negative point of view there, the Romanian side.
14:14There's no way forward for them and they're not going to give the ball away.
14:18Timofti looking strong in possession here and he's got Ballant in the middle.
14:22Oh, and the header just close.
14:26Oh dear.
14:26It really is a story of near misses and only this time and when you think of all the near misses at the other end with Cascarino and Quinn and Sheedy, you would have wondered whether he might have tried to control it with his chest.
14:39Absolutely.
14:40Absolutely.
14:41He had a little bit more time than he thought.
14:42Absolutely.
14:43He had a little bit more time than he thought.
14:46Still, Republic of Ireland nil, Romania nil.
14:51Just over a minute to go to the end of the first period of extra time here in Genoa.
14:58If they're still level, at the end of another 15 minutes extra time, we'll have penalties for the first time in this World Cup.
15:08You see, that's where tiredness creeps in. The ball in from Morris towards the front was a good ball.
15:15The header, the link up header was fine, but there was no support run at all now. The Irish have seemed to have lost their legs in midfield.
15:22They worked mighty hard to achieve this kind of platform at which they are still arguably a goal away from a place in the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time in their history.
15:37Here's Lupu for Romania. Morris comes to face him and McGrath.
15:43Harji takes over, always wanting the ball.
15:47Klein breaking down the left for him. Harji goes alone though.
15:53Sheedy turns it back calm as you like.
15:55Some brilliant defending there from Morris.
15:57He's faced with a rotten situation. Harji coming against him.
16:01Klein going around the outside against him.
16:04And he was just patient, waited, didn't dive in and saw the situation away.
16:10Well, we've had a quarter of an hour.
16:13So the referee will be blowing his whistle any moment.
16:20And indeed he has done so.
16:22So the teams will change ends and the deadlock remains unbroken at 0-0.
16:27A drink has been tossed onto the field.
16:30Strictly speaking, I don't think you're supposed to do this.
16:32I think you're supposed to change straight round.
16:34But the trainers from both teams are racing on to give the players a drink.
16:38And I think that's quite sensible that the referee is allowing them to as well.
16:41But normally, Ron, they change straight round, don't they?
16:43That's right. I think actually the long break they had between the end of normal time and extra time went against the Irish.
16:51Which the refs tried, the refs now tried to start them off now.
16:5615 minutes of the 30 minute extra.
16:59This World Cup, you know, they've got to use the water bottles.
17:01The pouch they felt were untidy on the field.
17:03So it's the bottles this time.
17:05But they certainly need to get the hydration, the water, because they'll lose some of these players eight, maybe ten pounds in the course of a game of this nature.
17:12Again, we say if there's no decision after 15 minutes, we'll go to penalty kicks.
17:16Once again, Alan Perry, Ron Atkinson.
17:26What's the referee in an invidious position, though, doesn't it?
17:28Because the eyes of the world are on it.
17:30The FIFA officials are on it.
17:31He knows he's got a set of instructions he's got to sort of abide by.
17:36You can only imagine some of those octogenarians who sit in committees and make these rules have never played football.
17:43Yeah, but they sit in there with their shin guards or no?
17:46And their socks rolled up, no doubt.
17:50And you never see them with their shirts outside the shirts.
17:53They know where to get a gin and tonic, one or two of them, but whether they know how punishing it is to play in 90 degree heat,
18:02is open to debate.
18:03Anyway, that's another topic for another day.
18:060-0 here in Genoa at the start of the second period of extra time.
18:13A place in the quarter-finals is the prize.
18:16Will it be Ireland for the first time ever, or Romania for the first time ever?
18:21Rotario for the Romanians, in possession.
18:24Tanzen blocks the way to goal, but he comes out to the left to find Klein.
18:29Haji clipped in dangerously.
18:36Balint chases to keep it in play.
18:40That's good defending though by David O'Leary.
18:45I just hope he hasn't overdone it there as they grapple for possession.
18:49And the referee's given either a free kick or a goal kick.
18:52It matters not, it's Ireland's ball.
18:54Obviously a free kick.
19:04Remember, they're playing for the right here to go on to the quarter-finals.
19:08A definite match in Rome against the winners of tonight's clash between Italy and Uruguay.
19:15That would be a nominal occasion if they could go through and these supporters could go to the Olympic Stadium.
19:25And the Irish would be welcome there.
19:26They've been welcome everywhere else.
19:27They've been impeccably behaved as we were saying earlier.
19:30Klein for Romania.
19:32Rondoni.
19:33Lepescu.
19:36McGrath won it back splendidly.
19:38Morris over his own head to Quinn.
19:40Houghton.
19:41Quinn in there to win it back for Ireland.
19:43Now McGrath straight against the Romanian and then he brought him down.
19:46Lepescu.
19:49It'll be a free kick and a booking I suspect, yes.
19:55Strange referee because a couple of times Mick McCarthy has done that.
19:58Brought players down deliberately when they've been away from him.
20:00And he hasn't bothered with the yellow card.
20:03I don't think he's related to Mick McCarthy, do you?
20:05No, but I think he's a keen fan of Mick's Brazilian style defending.
20:08And the FIFA official down there is telling Jack Charlton and Morisetas to sit down.
20:15Further indication that some rather petty things, they don't really matter, occupy the minds of these FIFA officials more than some things that should matter.
20:24It should matter.
20:29Jobsworth, I think is the phrase.
20:32Rotario for Romania.
20:37Popescu.
20:40Lepescu.
20:42Just playing it around to conserve energy as much as anything now.
20:450-0.
20:500-0 the score.
20:52We're three and a half minutes into the second period of extra time in Genoa.
20:57The Republic of Ireland playing Romania.
21:00And if the scores are still level at the end of this period of extra time, then we will go to penalties to decide who goes on to the quarter-final and meets either Italy or Uruguay.
21:09The highlights of which, incidentally, you can see on ITV at 11.20 tonight.
21:19Tiredness all over that ball from Klein.
21:22And now the, uh, seated figures of Setas and Charlton.
21:27They don't look quite so happy sitting down.
21:29I think it's all part of the frustrations of having been a player and now being a manager, which Ron Atkinson would know all about.
21:34They like to stand up and play every ball, kick every kick.
21:41You just look, you just wish.
21:43I can imagine Jack doing that.
21:44He knows his lads have battled bravely for him and fought brilliantly.
21:46Just hoping, perhaps, this is it.
21:49Just one big push from somebody.
21:50One bit of magic.
21:51That was an earlier from Townsend.
21:53You know, a wonder goal.
21:54Something that can...
21:56Something from nowhere, you know, that...
21:58Pull on their last ounce of strength, if you like.
22:03Just, I hope I'm wrong.
22:05I just wouldn't like to see the Irish go into a penalty competition.
22:07You get the feeling with these Romanians that, uh, they're better at it than, than the, uh, the British type player or our type of player.
22:18We could still have a goal in open play, of course.
22:21There's enough time as Timofti backheels it.
22:23And Hadji with the shot.
22:25Not one of his better efforts.
22:27Of which there have been several in this game.
22:32Do you think he'll take a penalty if he comes to penalties?
22:34I think he'll probably go in goal and try and save one as well.
22:37He's that type of player, isn't he?
22:42I would think every manager loves to have somebody who can't see enough of the ball during a game.
22:47And certainly he's one of them.
22:48Yeah, I mean, he came to this, uh, tournament with, uh, a big reputation, but, uh, doubts about his temperament.
22:54I mean, today he's proved he's one of the great players in the world.
22:57Individualistic, yeah, but a great player.
23:05It's slow, slow, quick, quick, slow football now.
23:10Nobody has the energy anymore to make those darting runs.
23:14It's a question of an error.
23:15A little flick on the deflection perhaps now that will decide this game.
23:19Unless we're to see it decided on penalties.
23:22You see, there's, there's a prime example.
23:24That's tiredness as well, of course, but, uh, maybe a certain lack of sharpness of the middle.
23:27It wins the header well, Quinn, but there's nobody really anticipating.
23:31Nobody got the willingness at this moment in time to just try and latch onto the second ball.
23:34Rednick for Romania.
23:39Popescu.
23:40Lupu.
23:42Nice little turn.
23:43Balint wanted the ball played early to him, but he's running at defenders instead, Lupu.
23:56As a substitute, he's got fresher legs than most.
23:59A good little ball out to Harji on the right.
24:02He's got Balint with him.
24:04Lupu providing the overlap.
24:06And in the end, back to Rotario.
24:08Good work by Houghton.
24:09Got in there to nick the ball off his toe.
24:12But only as far as Rednick.
24:14Houghton still running, still strong.
24:16Tanzan brought down.
24:18By Harji.
24:19Who, me?
24:20Yes, you.
24:22And you're booked as well.
24:25You can smile, but I think it's what you might call a sardonic, if not indeed, sarcastic smile.
24:31I suppose when you're a megastar, you think, uh, you know, the referees are in love with you as well.
24:35Yeah, I suppose he thinks that he takes so much flack, but a trifle high, I would guess, his challenge there.
24:42Nearly on top of the floodlights, it was so high, and he deserved that yellow card.
24:49Midway through, the second period of extra time.
24:52In other words, we've got about seven and a half minutes remaining here in Genoa.
24:56A great climb here.
24:57Oh, the shot was almost in slow motion by Quinn.
25:00And Lung trying to tell the defenders in front of him what he should have done.
25:05What they should have done.
25:06Yes, I think he can have that problem.
25:07That's a great leap from Cascarino, but there's the big lad.
25:10Tired legs.
25:12In all fairness, not the snappiest of turners anyway.
25:14Here it is.
25:15Maybe early on in the game he might have got more of a full boot on that.
25:21But, I mean, that would be the sort of, the sort of, the sort of thing that might give Jack Charlton a bit of a lift.
25:26He might just see a glimmer from there.
25:28Seven minutes to go here in Genoa.
25:31Seven minutes for one of these two teams, the Republic of Ireland and Romania, to score a goal to prevent the drama, no doubt, but the agony also inevitably for someone of a penalty shootout to go through to the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
25:49Can Ireland snatch the goal?
25:57McGrath back to the magnificent McCarthy.
26:01No other adjective would suffice to describe his display today.
26:05And Bonner's done well enough, too, with a couple of important saves.
26:10O'Leary plays a high, high ball for Cascarino.
26:14Some welcome shade now creeping over this beautiful stadium in Genoa.
26:20And to the dismay of Cascarino and the Irish fans all around him, the throw has gone Romania's way.
26:35O'Leary in there battling for possession again, it's another throw.
26:39And it's again Romania's.
26:41Well, in the four matches in the second phase that we've seen so far, we haven't yet needed a penalty shootout.
26:50Is this to be the first?
26:51There have been some dramatic penalty shootouts over the years in the World Cup.
26:55Never forget Belgium-Spain, for instance, in Mexico 86.
26:59But no one really wants that.
27:01Mind you, if the alternative is a goal against you, everyone wants it if you're Irish.
27:05Rotario in possession for Romania.
27:09Lupu.
27:10You feel for the players now.
27:12Nobody wants to make a mistake at this stage.
27:14It would haunt you for the rest of your life.
27:16Aji.
27:25Well, Arragans got the better of him then.
27:27actually he's been impressive since he came on number 11 looper he's allowed fellow with power
27:37he sees got power he can put if he can flatten big pool but he's got power he's got the ability
27:41to run with the ball and you get the feeling that he might be he's been booked as well
27:46obviously the shirt pull in or saying something but uh you get the feeling that he is causing
27:51an extra or an added threat to harji with harji lupus shown the yellow card two players from
27:57acts uh each side now have been booked or amenito as they call it over here mccarthy with the free
28:04kick for ireland it's a good looking one as well cascarino climbing high sheedy all of ireland
28:10expected again for a moment that's right i mean cascarino's just one two very useful headers from
28:17set plays just can't fall right that's not a bad strike it just didn't fall right for kevin sheedy
28:23i mean when you see him i've seen him this season crack some goals in for everton wonder goals
28:28just one of those just wanted give ireland everything they wanted four minutes to go and
28:33incidentally what i didn't say when harji was caution was that he'd earlier received a caution in the first
28:39phase so he will next uh he will definitely miss the next game if romania have a next game and here he is
28:46again here's another guy booked lupu straight against sheedy now then has cascarino got the legs to carry it
28:55down the left the irish public get behind him give him second wind and a good little ball as well for
29:01townsend and help making a great run but he spotted morris on the right flank quinn and cascarino take up
29:07position on the far post sheedy gets there first cleared by rotario though good little header by kevin
29:15moran back in it comes from david o'leary and he knows doesn't need me to say it's not the best broad
29:22he's played no i'm still puzzled by that substitution actually i'd like to think that maybe they would have
29:28ronnie wheeler or john sheridan somebody with just a little bit of extra creativity with fresh legs
29:33i mean as i said the only thing i can think david o'leary was caught on paul was to try and subdue
29:37harji but harji's uh done the cute thing now from across the other side of the field
29:43well the remaining irish players on the substitute bench join in the anxiety shown by their managerial team
29:52two and a half minutes to go two and a half minutes away from a penalty decider and paul mcgraw has
29:57deliberately elbowed in the face the romanian player right in front of the referee and the romanian
30:03bench and he could be in big trouble here oh alan they'll tell you he's got problems the big man's
30:09got problems if the referee's seen that hard he's had a little tug at him as they went down on the
30:13ground hard he had a little tug at him and then big ball with the back of his elbows took a right
30:17crack at him he'll do well to get away without sending off there with the big man well i saw it
30:22as clearly as you did ron the referees allowed the players to shake hands for the moment he's giving
30:28them both a telling knock maybe he's decided that it was six of one and a half a dozen of the other but
30:32look at this now watch for mcgrath's elbow as they fell on the ground there's the first elbow wow
30:41mcgrath was rather more accurate with his elbow than harji i've heard of giving people the elbow but that's
30:47very very fortunate i agree with you they were lucky to escape that one especially as they've both
30:54already been cautioned of course a long ball for klein down the left
31:07harji turning it in that was dangerous
31:17good play by houghton he's opened it up for o'leary we're into the final minute on my watch
31:23less than 60 seconds to the drama of a penalty shootout here in genoa as moran plays it forward
31:29once more the ball blocked george quinn oh she couldn't get on the end of it it's ironic we've
31:35gone to the last sort of five minutes of a what a two-hour game and all of a sudden cascarino started
31:40winning everything and had it winning it cleanly but there's nobody quite to latch onto those those other
31:47second droppings the countdown begins there are 30 seconds remaining
31:54it's nil nil they're playing for a place in the world cup quarterfinals quinn has battled his way
31:59through almost great shout of handball and in fact the decision has gone against ireland
32:05the brazilian referee quite certain let's see what happens now well he certainly that was not deliberate
32:11handball by quinn who then felt he was held back
32:13mccarthy chases lupu and mccarthy's been a hero
32:21goal kick and it probably will be the last kick of the game apart from the penalties which will now
32:27i'm certain decide the outcome of this second phase match here in genoa
32:31and there is the final whistle so we will see penalties between both teams to decide the outcome of this match
32:49which and you'll see the goalkeepers probably committing themselves one way or the other
32:58and looking at the way bonner has played probably has a slight edge because he's been excellent in the
33:03shot stopping department this afternoon you'll see the play um andy townsend a beautiful left he'll be
33:08another one but i've lost a very valuable one in john oldridge so patrick bonner makes his way down it
33:14looks like he'll be the first keeper to face a romanian penalty kick here as we go to a shootout to
33:19decide this second round game between the republic of ireland and romania once again alan perry and ron atkinson
33:26penalty takers nominated and remember five from each side to begin with and if it was still
33:36level after the compulsory five per team then it goes to sudden death and if you think that this is
33:42dramatic wait till you see that i've seen this in big european competitions and world cups and
33:47european championships over the years it's nerve-tingling excitement this you can reach out
33:52and feel the tension in the stadium and at least from ireland's point of view they've got the
33:57fantastic support of the vast majority of the crowd you watch and listen out for the whistling and the
34:03booing when the first romanian who will be in fact their star man harji steps forward to take the first
34:10kick ron what do you think i'm backing bonner i'm backing the irish fans to blow up harji and the romanian
34:16shots out and backing them to suck the irish shots in well always an awkward moment for the referee as
34:25well keeping count of these things not to mention those of us in the commentary box these things can
34:30test your mental arithmetic arithmetic to the flock i didn't say it never mind do it i haven't got one
34:35percent in a maths exam a few years ago i'm not best equipped to cope with this one so ron get the old
34:42money beads out and start counting the referee has to carefully note the name of each player of course
34:49and keep a check on the number taken bonner faces the first penalty harji takes it for romania
35:01first blood to romania harji the scorer you would have backed him with your mortgage as well
35:08cracked in bonner guessed the right way but that wasn't enough kevin sheedy will take ireland's first
35:17kick i've got a theory about this in shootouts i always instruct my goalkeepers to stand still
35:24in the shootout stand still five penalties against you two will go very very close to a keeper standing
35:29in the center of his goal if you save two that's enough kevin sheedy versus sylvia lung the captain of
35:36of romania
35:53i would think there could be no greater feeling of relief in the whole of football than to have
35:57dispatched your penalty
36:01there's the one i'm on about straight down the throat the keeper to be fair doesn't set himself
36:06uh alone you watch him he's doing all sorts of dancing and wobbling and careful i think pat bonner's
36:12just got to stand still stay there let one hit him in the face if he likes now i wonder whether this
36:17is a bit of psychology here because the next romanian penalty taker is showing a marked reluctance to
36:23come forward which leaves bonner pacing up and down nervously like an expectant father on the goal
36:27line and the referee has had to actually whistle to call him forward it's lupu the substitute and i suppose
36:33it's all about psychology as much as anything this situation isn't it i suppose there's a fair bit
36:37of information you know in the heat of the game i know it sounds obvious but maybe maybe the romanian
36:43manager hasn't uh had time to form his list i mean he's got two subs on how does he include them
36:49somebody said jokingly perhaps jack charlton didn't even realize it would go to penalties so i wonder if
36:53ireland had their list lupu against bonner well that's calm if you like he side-footed it in i don't
37:04know whether it was nervousness or confidence
37:06together jack charlton wasn't even looking then couldn't bring himself to look that's a good
37:16penalty you accept that you accept that but the first one first one went close to him certainly
37:21sheedy's penalty went close to uh romanian or where the romanian keeper started
37:27charlton will look now as ray houghton as the next nerve-tingling job
37:36two successes each from the penalty spot the fans salute houghton and he salutes them
37:49oh dear the nervous tension that must be going on on that bench
37:55i'll bet big jack wish he could get a hug on now
38:00which i think he could do with a pint of guinness as well when you think of it this could be the
38:04the culmination of what two years hard work all the hopes all the dreams
38:12arguably even more than that when you think how long jack charlton has been planning for this moment
38:17for ireland to have made it to the world cup finals and now facing this
38:22agonizing penalty shootout to decide who goes into the quarterfinals
38:25real drama for the tea time viewers back home as rotario takes the third penalty for romania
38:34and finds the net they lead 3-2 now on penalties with the third irish penalty still to come of course
38:44and they've all been well dispatched on haven't they yes i thought the first two gave the keeper a
38:52chance if it have held this position but since then they've been well slotted
38:55i think it could be townsend indeed it is andy townsend who not so many years ago was playing
39:06non-league football at welling in kent and you could hardly have dreamed of finding a moment like this
39:13jack charlton for all his experience in the game can never have faced anything quite as tense as this
39:18andy townsend with the responsibility of drawing ireland level with their third penalty kick
39:29yes
39:41you can just feel the relief oozing out
39:43three three on penalties two each per side for the compulsory five before we go sudden death
39:56but this is where the fun starts now i guess with the irish side because i think now they'll
40:00have players taking penalties that aren't natural spot kickers i mean i would guess the lads that have
40:05all taken them obviously sheedy takes plenty howton's taking them townsend's taking them for norwich but
40:10now they're getting into the likes of possibly paul mcgraf anybody with anybody that's really got the
40:15bottle now bonner will have the bottle to face this one from lupescu this to make it 4-3 to romania
40:25bonner crosses himself and calls for the greater power to help him
40:29he wasn't smiling on him then although he was mighty close to getting there
40:32yes i'll just be interested to see i think that's another one that if he'd have held his ground he
40:40may may have got closer to and that's a good one that's a good one he had to go for it
40:46it's traveling yeah i thought it was closer to the center of course
40:50it must be like russian roulette this for the penalty takers the keepers i suppose are under not
40:55quite so much pressure nobody actually expects them to make saves and you're a hero if you do it's 4-3 to
40:59romania tony cascarino of aston villa will try and beat this man lung the romanian keeper to make it 4-4
41:10long move it didn't matter cascarino hit the back of the net it is 4-4 he knows long he's annoyed with
41:18himself he knows that may have been the one i think the divot probably went in the ground back of the net
41:23firmer than the baldy but it doesn't matter it's there to be to be fair on he was moving and jumping
41:29about like uh madman on the line it must have bugged cascarino off well he's done that with a couple of
41:33them he's nearly come out to tackle the kicker 4-4
41:41this well i'm shaking the tension here goodness knows what the players must be like down there
41:45but the funny old thing is i'm looking in the center serve where all the players have to stay
41:49um certainly the romanians and one of the irishers whether it's a nervous thing are actually laughing
41:54their heads up maybe those have already taken them certainly lupu was having a good old laugh about
41:59something i've heard of condemned men laughing on the way to the gallows and it must feel like that
42:04for some of these players it must feel like you're on your way to the gallows
42:10right bonner in action again one of the romanian substitutes the second substitute in fact elected to
42:18take a penalty this time daniel timofti will take their fifth and final kick of the first five that
42:26each side must have bonner remains still unlike his opposite number one
42:37he's set
42:37scenes of celebration all around but it's not over yet bonner is the hero and jack jolt knows that in
42:54the next 30 seconds ireland could be in the world cup quarter finals if this penalty goes in not this one
43:03because we know that didn't brilliantly saved great save didn't look as if he believed in himself
43:08there timothy and what a story this could be because the man entrusted with a penalty that could get
43:14island through to the world cup quarterfinals is one of the longest serving players and a man who's had
43:19disagreements with his manager david o'leary all the disagreements will be forgotten if he beats this
43:27goalkeeper now what a moment i just hope he doesn't go for a placement i hope he just puts the back of
43:34the thing down and wax it as hard as he can people are on the edge of their seats here in genoa heaven
43:41knows what it's like back in ireland
43:55it defies belief it really defines belief
43:59ireland who have never qualified for the world cup finals before this year have a date in rome in
44:11the quarterfinals maybe with the host nation italy they won't care who they're playing
44:19incredible
44:22and they left it to the very very very last kick
44:27to win their place
44:31well you will not be able to move around genoa tonight for joyous irishmen they have come here
44:41to support their team they have done it with great good humor and perfect behavior and they deserve the
44:49celebrations they'll get tonight the republic of ireland are into the quarterfinals of the world cup
44:56and the old chap david o'leary got them there
45:01nerve and technique
45:04but what a fabulous occasion that's going to be on saturday for these people
45:09i mean the fans these fans are amongst the best certainly they are not they're on a part with the
45:13great brazilian fans if you like whenever they beat the world cups and they're going to make it
45:17it they're going to make it a fiesta in rome on saturday and they deserve it bonnet deserves his
45:22part for the save from timothy o'leary made sure that the dream came true so after 90 minutes without
45:32a goal after half an hour's extra time without a goal the penalty shootout ended the republic of ireland
45:39five romania four there'll be irish jigs all over the world tonight
45:46and ireland are in the quarterfinals of the world cup for the first time ever
45:51we're all going to pause for a much-needed breath
45:53a dramatic finish as the republic of ireland advanced and yes pat bonner is the hero
46:09to make all irish eyes smile tonight as he makes the stop on timofty to give the republic a 5-4 win
46:18in penalty kicks
