What is renal cell carcinoma?

There are two parts in the kidney – the part that filters the blood and forms the urine, and the part that collects the urine. If the cancer comes from the part where the urine is formed, then it is called renal cell carcinoma. If it is in the collecting part, then it is transitional cell carcinoma.

Renal tumour causes

✔ Smoking
✔ Hypertension
✔ Obesity
✔ Long-duration dialysis

How kidney tumours are diagnosed

Mostly these tumours are diagnosed incidentally, i.e., while scanning for some other problems.

00:00Hi, I am Dr. Anuramesh from Kaveri Hospital Alvarped.
00:03I am talking about renal tumors.
00:06So, if you look at the kidney,
00:08two or three different types of specific tumors can come.
00:11One is that there are two parts in the kidney.
00:14One is that the urine will filter the urine form.
00:18This is the urine form.
00:21This is the urine form.
00:24So, the urine filter is called a renal cell carcinoma.
00:29If you collect the part,
00:31it is mostly a transitional cell carcinoma.
00:34So, I will talk to you about the renal cell carcinoma.
00:37If you look at the RCCs,
00:40most commonly, it is incidentally detected.
00:43If you scan a few people,
00:45you will see a few people.
00:47Mostly in the master health check-up.
00:50There is some other reason they are doing a scan.
00:52There is pain.
00:54In the scans, they will pick up these tumors.
00:56Otherwise,
00:57if you look at the associations,
01:00smoking is a very common association.
01:02Hypertension,
01:03obesity.
01:04Very few people,
01:05there is a familial association of renal tumors.
01:08Other than this,
01:10few people,
01:11mostly long duration dialysis,
01:15some of them may have.
01:16Some people can have it due to certain other causes,
01:19irritant factors might be there.
01:22So,
01:23how many people are present?
01:25So,
01:26most commonly,
01:27incidentally,
01:28what symptoms are there.
01:29Two of them may have blood in the urine.
01:31So,
01:32if the tumor is not only within the kidney,
01:35or it has spread,
01:36you can have association of
01:38how the spread is there.
01:40So,
01:41we need to investigate,
01:42we will require CT scans with some contrast study.
01:47So,
01:48in the contrast study,
01:49we will die.
01:50In that case,
01:51we will see the various phases in the CT.
01:53So,
01:54in the tumor,
01:55here,
01:56there is a description of the tumor.
01:57Why we have CT scans?
01:59The tumor,
02:00whether it is amenable for resection alone.
02:03That is,
02:04there is a tumor with some normal kidney tissue.
02:07In that case,
02:08there are three kidneys.
02:10The kidney tumor with a little bit of tissue removal,
02:13that is,
02:14partial nephrectomy.
02:15Remove of the entire kidney along with the tumor,
02:18that is called a radical nephrectomy.
02:20So,
02:21the investigation is going to be helpful for further treatment as well.
02:26Additionally,
02:27suppose,
02:28we will be taking even a PET scan,
02:32as in when,
02:33if it is necessary.
02:34In this case,
02:35we have a regular follow-up.
02:38Every three months,
02:39for the initial two years.
02:41Thereafter,
02:42six monthly ones.
02:43And after finishing four years,
02:45fifth year onwards,
02:46we are early ones.
