00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true Charlie
00:11Dimock Lee Burkill Flo Headlem and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies feels disorganized a bit chaotic it's a bit of a shocker each week two of our designers
00:34will go head-to-head pick me and let's do this the garden we're gonna go with is and whichever
00:47designer loses the race is on helps the winner build the garden good idea did you get that on
00:53camera they said good idea Charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes well into reality
01:11today the team are taking on a garden that's seen better days in Luton I'm Lewis I'm Dorian and this
01:22is Nyla we've lived in this house for about eight months family started to expand or continue to
01:29expand and we just felt we needed more space very much a dream home very much a forever home for us
01:35it's got a lot of things that we can do to it and the garden is huge lots of space for the kids this
01:41is our garden at the moment bits are quite overgrown it's a little bit wild before they moved in Lois
01:49in Dorian's garden had been left unkempt for years it feels quite disorganized a bit chaotic and not
01:57functional they have a half acre plot made of separate areas including a now overgrown formal
02:04lawn and an allotment space with an old greenhouse and established trees the garden no longer reflects
02:11its famous past life it was celebrated on gardeners world along with previous owner Dana Johnson it's
02:19thirsty and hungry like my family this garden has a huge kind of history the previous owner Dana had
02:28won southeast gardener of the year we've seen videos and we've seen pictures of it in its heyday and it
02:32was absolutely meticulous like the grass looked like carpet everything was just picture perfect so it's a
02:39real puzzle and I don't really know where to start with it so I find it daunting I wouldn't call it
02:44daunting I think it's inspirational I think just recognizing what it was so these are our three
02:53apple trees which look like about five or six because they're so massively overgrown and they've
02:58grown up they've grown out they've grown down they're not this side so these used to be like a lot
03:06of fruit and vegetable growing here but as you can see everything's just massively overgrown at the
03:11moment there's these metal bits that are kind of really sharp and sticking out and they're really
03:17like unsafe so I worry about the kids kind of coming into this area and playing it's going through to
03:26the next section so this is our greenhouse and we've repaired the glass but we're still not using it
03:35it's still not perfectly functional the gutters a bit broken and inside as you can see there's not much
03:40there concentrating on the old allotment area of Lois and Dorian's garden are Chris and Charlie
03:50there's Lois and Dorian and their little kiddies so that's the garden oh it's quite big actually isn't
03:59it it's got a lovely layout to it I can't believe it was featured on gardeners world in the 80s I was
04:04still at school then I wasn't even born I am going off you it's not gardeners world ready now is it I
04:11mean it's been a long time since it's been touched and I think it could look beautiful so there's some
04:16lovely fruit trees yeah there are some nice trees but look at the rest of it the fence is falling down
04:21the greenhouse is smashed I mean it needs a lot of love a lot of TLC I have to say see what Lois and
04:30Dorian won't they yeah let's find out so what we'd love from this garden is to restore it to its former
04:36glory and just honor what was once here I'm so pleased that they don't want modern clean cut because
04:42I was thinking what do you do with that yeah there's a lot going on in that garden a lot of existing trees
04:47to work with so that would be difficult yeah but make it eco-friendly and child-friendly family friendly
04:52as well I think it's really important to try and get the sort of allotment area to show the kids you
04:59know where food comes from oh well that's nice all fish and fruit I think it's important that you
05:06know the kids learn about ecosystem and so that the plants tracked pollinators to help pollinate the
05:13plants and make the fruits grow exactly and I really love is that it's all about teaching the kids where
05:18their food comes from fantastic one other thing that I would really love in this space is a place to
05:23relax and something that also fits with the wider garden so what's the budget I'm not gonna like
05:29this Charlie it's really tight it's only 4k 4,000 pounds it's a big garden and there's a lot to do I
05:36think it's all about focusing those pennies in the right areas so we can deliver the food to teach the
05:41kids where it's come from a nice seating area and then work with that existing garden to get the most
05:54for their 4,000 pound budget Charlie and Chris will be focusing their design on the old allotment area
06:00in Dorian and Lois's garden the couple must pick the one they prefer and the losing designer must help
06:08the winner build it along with an expert team of landscapers who provide their labor for free which
06:15leaves the full budget for materials back in Luton Lois and Dorian have received the designers pitches
06:26Lois Dorian what a fantastic garden you've got I can see why you want to renovate it faded
06:37glory but I want to rejuvenate it and give you a space that's great for the family great for
06:44wildlife and also produces lots of yummy things I like the sound of that me too we want to restore
06:52this garden to its former glory but you're also a family you have young children and you need a space
06:57where you can all come together yes I want to do this patio area here is what to pick up some of
07:05the paving and mix it up with some reclaimed slabs and maybe some bricks and some stone and then we've
07:12got this simple pergola that runs up and over the paving and that frames a view down the garden for
07:19growing climbers got grapevine where you can use the leaves you can use the fruit that's a good idea
07:27Charlie's design encloses the family with a pergola climbing plants and patio in the center of the new
07:35allotment space whilst Chris has created a different central point now this is going to be the main family
07:42social space and I'm going to do that by reclaiming what was a former bed but it's now going to become
07:48paving with gravel around the edges and these beautiful round posts with rope swags hanging
07:53between them which would be great for climbers really nice idea yeah never seen that before
07:57this is where we go from the social zone into the more productive zone this part here I think is going
08:03to be really fun for the kids I wanted to give them their very own raised beds but I wanted to make
08:09them a vertical growing archway where they can have beans and gourds and squashes growing up over
08:15this and what's great about it is that you can actually walk around them but you can also walk
08:20underneath it and see the plants growing overhead I think it's a really cool design idea well the kids
08:26would love to see that and I wanted to create an area that's a bit magical for the children so we got
08:32this raised bed here sleeper high and we're going to mound the soil up and create these two seating
08:39areas with these sections of tree trunks as a pathway through oh that's quite interesting yeah I think
08:47the kids will love like jumping and leaping on those logs we're gonna have seat made from recycled
08:53materials bug hotel and then we've got meadow so when you're sat on the bench you'll be surrounded by
09:02all these meadow plants and flowers but also a great space for your children to plant some bulbs
09:09and get involved with gardening that will be very cool making their new patch a perfect place for the
09:16children is important to Lois and Dorian as is bringing the old greenhouse back to life further down to the
09:25end of the garden I know it was really important for you to get that greenhouse back up and running what
09:30I'd like to do is get you some new things in there so you can actually start growing again get you
09:36growing vertically as well but I've got a few sneaky ideas for that so leave it with me I wonder what
09:41that's gonna be what I want to do is revamp that greenhouse a great space for growing things bringing
09:48on seedlings and also for growing things that might need a little bit more heat and protection at the
09:55beginning of the year so if you want to grow sweet potatoes and chili plants and tomatoes then
10:01they'll need that protection to get them going that would be great definitely I think this is going
10:07to be a huge transformation for this space and I think it's going to be something you really enjoy
10:11together as a family I'd love to see this one bill lots of things to think about yeah really cool design
10:20not what I could have imagined or pictured at all so I'm hoping you like my design there's a little
10:25bit of everything for everyone lots of recycling lots of fruit and veg but also a nice place to explore
10:34and sit out as a family well that's amazing quite a good one they're so different yeah it's gonna be tough
10:42to choose between them Dorian Lois and Nyla must now decide on their favorite design so I really
10:53love both of the designs that's really nice but I'll start with Charlie's design I mean what I really
10:58love is just the different heights and how she's played with the landscape yeah I like the idea of you
11:04know the kids own mix space the kids own I love the bulk hotel I think the kids will really enjoy that
11:10Chris's design is really great I love the nice open social space area that he's put in there and
11:15the vertical growing area just outside the greenhouse I really like this plateau area so Nyla can you see
11:22all the trees what do you like here do you like all the trees I don't know they're just both so
11:29different yeah they both smashed the brief yeah right Lois and Dorian have come back to us with a
11:41result so we see who's on it then go on hi Chris hi Charlie first of all thank you both so much for
11:48such a great design I'll start with Chris's design you know I really loved your ideas about the social
11:54space and how you'd make that sort of work for our family and Charlie what we loved about your design
11:58was this idea of using reclaimed materials that add texture and variation to the flooring well we
12:03had to use reclaimed materials to make the budget go further yeah we had a really difficult decision
12:11both designs were absolutely fantastic and they really considered kind of both of what we wanted of
12:16needs as a family but on balance we decided to go with Charlie we really like the openness and the
12:30flow and that we can kind of just walk through and navigate really easily through the garden so
12:34overall we're really really happy with this design Chris oh my I think we've got a bit of a challenge
12:41on here I definitely need your help because it's gonna be a slog yeah with just two days to rescue the
12:54forgotten allotment part of Lois and Dorian's garden project manager Ben and an elite team of
13:00landscapers are on route to Luton we have a bit of a wilderness here we've got a strip it all back
13:10and we've got to create this garden for Lois and Dorian first thing we need to do let's get the digger
13:17in hopefully it goes through the archway we're gonna strip back from the greenhouse work backwards
13:22get everything in the skip and then we start putting Charlie's plan to action so let's crack on with
13:28it yeah let's get it done using a micro digger ideal for tight access bottom track bottom track
13:41how excited Andy's first job is to clear a weed ridden top layer of turf in the old allotment area so
13:50Andy's now starting to clear the area we're trying to keep as much as we can so we can reuse it and
13:56still keep it in the garden the soil once we sit through it it will be reused as a soil is beautiful
14:06the team is striving to recycle as much as they can
14:13these paths running through the gardens are all coming up and I've pulled them up and it's beautiful old gritstone
14:19quite a soft rock quite a porous rock you can cut it well you can carve it well and it looks beautiful
14:28so definitely use those Charlie's design for this space puts reclaimed materials front and centre from
14:36buried paving to disregarded wood you've got some lovely stuff here Ben where you had all this from it's beautiful yeah
14:43um locally to me I have a saw mills but you get all these beautiful off cuts they can't sell them
14:50but they're perfect for Charlie's garden here yeah and it comes with its own wildlife it does yeah bug hotel
14:55fitted already here we go last one amazing thank you the offcuts will be used to encourage wildlife to
15:04to the garden while Lee's got more woodwork to create in the form of framing for a raised patio close to the garden entrance
15:16Lee's cutting the sleepers so we create the right angles we have Andy putting the membrane down so we
15:22can create the base ready for the paving to go in once the sleepers are placed and fixed the team put a
15:29membrane in and whack the gravel ready for a new patio
15:36well look at these Lee you hunted four right didn't you
15:42no it's two of them mate it's just easy it's just amazing Lee focuses on the woodwork for the raised beds
15:47that'll be positioned in front of the greenhouse now you're getting off well it's coming together now
15:53last one of the the ones for down the bottom of the garden so okay we'll get these in then we can
15:57concentrate on this uh framework that we've got to build our arts yeah we're nearly ready for you
16:03in there if that's okay yeah yeah 10 minutes mate and i'll be done before the framework can be placed
16:08the patio needs putting down
16:18so if you're paving up to timber never pave right up to it so it's touching
16:24because timber can swell in the winter shrink in the summer so it will move your slab so leave a 10 mil gap
16:32and it allows it to move
16:39using a mix of stones to create texture in this family space a pergola will sit across the paving to
16:46house climbers and planting
16:47right so this is the beginning of the the archway we're putting in so i'll get this in place so at
16:55least i'm not going to hold i'm going to start cutting around it
17:02bang on hey just going to screw it to the sleepers
17:10and then i'll put some concrete in the hole and get it firmed in properly
17:14with the patio pergola posts and raised beds ready today has been hot and hard work for the
17:21landscapers hopefully they'll have cooled down by the time charlie and chris arrive in the morning
17:28well chris this one's going to be a bit different for us i think it's going to be very different
17:37for us charlie this garden really really has grown yeah so we're going to be trying to just create a
17:43little oasis a little patio with all these mature plants around it a little space and then lois and
17:50dorian can slowly progress with the rest of the garden well it sounds lovely but sometimes all those
17:55mature plants you say that now there's a challenge love challenge love
18:04i said it was going to be a challenge wow i mean it must have been an absolutely beautiful garden
18:10but the guys have done an amazing job from what it was it was so forgotten about wasn't it
18:15this little corner yeah and i mean reusing all those materials which is great we love that
18:21lots of work so i'd love you to get on the pergola i'm going to go and check out the wildlife zone
18:28and the veg yeah okay all right i'll have a think about the pergola good luck now when you move into a
18:36new house and it's all overgrown people panic and think just get a digger in rip everything out
18:42don't do that live with the garden for at least a year and okay maybe prune things back a bit and
18:49do a bit of weeding but you'll discover things in the garden some terrible things perennial weeds
18:56to get on top of that it's going to be digging out the weeds maybe put carpet over the top to suppress
19:02the weeds and leave it for a good year and it'll get rid of those perennial weeds but on the flip side
19:08you're going to discover wonderful things like these lovely mature apple trees we've got jasmine
19:14and a clematis and then we've got sicilian honey garlic here which is a bulb so if you've got a
19:20digger in just scraped all the soil off you don't know whether there's bulbs in there or not because
19:25they might not be in growth so live with the garden mark things and then also living with the garden you
19:32discover how you actually use the garden charlie's design combines new ideas with old materials and
19:39mature plants charlie's taking on the apple tree pruning so when you come to pruning things and
19:46cutting things back cut to a joint just above the joint and it cuts through nice and easily if you've
19:53got bits of wood that are thicker so this sort of thickness you would use a loppers so that you can cut
20:01them off easily like that oh sorry no i'm all right
20:14below the newly pruned apple tree and he's worked out a design to bring new life to the thick stones
20:19unearthed yesterday this is looking beautiful okay there aren't we and this is all from the path
20:26still these are all bits what i pulled out this old path yeah beautiful this one next yeah i think
20:32if you paint him up i'll get some cement in chris is helping lee with a pergola roof designed to
20:41encourage climbers now lee has made this beautiful chunky pergola for charlie to go over the seating area
20:49and what i really like about it is because it's getting nestled into all this mature planting it looks like
20:54something that is meant to be there and has been there for a long time but now we've got the
20:58challenge of lifting this beast up don't we yeah oh watch out here we go you ready
21:07the long and chunky roof will also create dappled sunlight across the center of the patio
21:13i actually can't see from here can you see that it's only just about bangor
21:26beautiful could do i can do me monkey bars on it will you tell me off i'll show you off i'll have a
21:34mad dad moment with the pergola roof in place there is more woodwork that needs installing the team move
21:44on to the frames for raised beds that charlie wants placed in front of lois and dorian's greenhouse okay
21:51and obviously we're going to want to level these up yeah level this one up now what i'm thinking now so
21:57if that's there so that's going to be the raised bed then we've got the path yeah then we've got to
22:01get the other one in up there yeah up there then we're going to have a screen across here to screen
22:06that yeah grow runner beans up it or whatever lovely and then depending on height we could put a piece
22:12of timber across there and it'll be a nice little bench it'll be perfect yeah right height charlie's
22:19design keeps lois and dorian's children in mind with another seating area by the raised patio
22:26so lee's back at his workbench ready to create two bespoke seats so what you're thinking then i'm
22:33thinking making two little seats so cute like that different sizes cool and we could set them at
22:41different heights yeah because the kids are the different heights yeah so a low one and a high one
22:55lee is crafting square seats from reclaimed offcuts using long timber planks as back rests
23:01charlie's unique seating area will create an inspiring space for lois and dorian's three children
23:14now this is my turn to get a little bit artistic i'm going to use these gorgeous bits of gnarly logs
23:22to act as a collar around some plants and it will just stop the meadow turf from swamping the plants
23:29and it just looks arty and of course is great for bugs and things because you've got this
23:34old rotten wood in the center
23:39these wood offcuts create a rustic path
23:47does that look sort of levelish todd
23:48that's posh lovely so that's the one that's a job
24:10now we're at quite a fun bit of this section of the garden it's time to get the slats on and the whole
24:16idea with these is that it's just going to screen the greenhouse behind because this is more of a
24:20working end of the garden whereas this is more about ornamentals of fun and a beautiful space for
24:26the family to enjoy and this is something that's really easy for anybody to replicate at home because
24:31all it is a couple of posts some nice planed rounded off button and then we're going to repeat
24:38them all the way up the posts and just use a little spacer as we go so this is something that anybody
24:43can do all right come on then mt let's start getting these in
24:59looking good looking good
25:00so this area is coming together now so this is all about wildlife and insects so we're going
25:13to have meadow turf which is going to be great because you'll get lots of different butterflies
25:17and moths and things like that which will then also help with the pollination and bees the pollination
25:24of the veg but great for the children so seats over there i'm putting in this basically this big
25:31bucket which is going to be a big bird bath and then this is going to be a bird table so we found this
25:37bit of metal i think it's cast iron it's very heavy but i want it so i get lee to cut me a hole in
25:43there because i want it so that they can lift it off and scrub it down occasionally that way there's less
25:48chance of disease spread in between the birds to bring the screen and raised bed area together in
26:07the growing space chris needs to create a bench seat so i'm just measuring up and cutting two short bits of
26:14sleeper that i'm going to use to form the bench that goes just under the screen i've just built
26:20and this again is really simple construction to be honest but it's going to give you a really solid
26:26chunky bench that's going to last a long time i'll get these cut and i'll get them in
26:33chris can install them in the growing space that sold charlie's design to lois and dorian
26:40for me the most the thing i'm looking forward to the most
26:42is just growing fresh produce and being able to not have to buy certain things from the supermarket
26:47and actually peel it wash it cook it and yeah i'm looking forward to that a lot i'm really looking
26:53forward to the section for the kids they can enjoy it and and you know have their own little growing
27:00space right i'm going to create a bug hotel underneath the seat now it's ideal because the top of the seat
27:10keeps the hotel dry and what you're trying to do is create little gaps and areas for insects to
27:16overwinter lay eggs so that they're insulated and protected from birds from eating them and you can
27:24use all sorts of materials so i've so got some bits of words these are shingles so you can just stack
27:30those i've got some coir so i'm going to cut that up into strips and put between so you're just creating
27:36layers you can slice up canes into all sorts
27:52you ever wander around the garden like a teddy bear
28:07chris is laying meadow turf to encourage more insects and wildlife into the garden
28:13and charlie plans to introduce colorful flowers as well as fruit and veg throughout
28:18wow i knew you knew who it was look at that look at these marigolds companion planting for the
28:27vegetables exactly i mean i know it's a veggie garden you have taken this to the next level what
28:33we've got oh sugar snaps sugar snaps we've got carrots i can't you know being a carrot top i've
28:39got to have carrots haven't i this is oh and then i thought i'd plant some strawberries in the wildlife
28:47area because the birds will like them but also the children will be there yeah yeah love this
28:54in a not too daunting nod to the former glory of this garden charlie wants to bring vegetables to two
29:07raised beds now veg beds so apart from sort of edible plants and that i've got fun plants for the children
29:16so we've got some pumpkins which of course they climb so they'll scrabble up over this trellis
29:22we've got some beans that are dark color beans like almost black so we've got lots of different
29:29things that the kids will like to grow as well and that's just really a case of arranging them and
29:35don't forget there are some things like the chives not only can you eat the leaves but you can eat the
29:42flowers as well and they taste of chives so that's a good one and we've got some nasturtiums you can
29:48eat the leaves you can eat the flowers and you can eat the seeds and of course they're a really great
29:53plant for children to grow because they're self-seed they're hardy annual and they'll come up year after
30:00year you've just got to look out for for the very distinctive leaves so when you see this the leaf come
30:07up like that you know it's nasturtium tropiolum tropiolum nasturtium tropiolum i thought that
30:14was a place in italy the name comes from the shield that the gladiators used to hold because
30:20they were round weren't they see i knew i was on the right path with the italy reference yummy peppery
30:27tastes like peppery watercrest chris meanwhile is planning the best way to introduce produce
30:39to the forgotten greenhouse that lois and dorian want brought back to life
30:46the greenhouse for me is where all the magic comes together because this is where you can experiment
30:52with your plants and start to grow stuff that might be a little bit more tender a bit more unusual
30:57or even a bit risky now the easy way to get started in a greenhouse everybody knows about them is grow
31:04bags what's good about them is that you can just buy them from the shop chuck them on the floor of the
31:09greenhouse and do exactly what i'm doing here cut a slit in and plant some plants in and then something
31:16else you can do if you're going to grow tomatoes you can either get them quite small plant them in the
31:23grow bag and let them grow up from there but sometimes what you can do is grow your tomato
31:29in a bigger pot cut the bottom off like this and then plant that into your grow bag so it's going
31:35to get that extra root space all the nutrients from the grow bag and then you'll have loads of delicious
31:41tomatoes and the other good thing about tomatoes is when you walk into a greenhouse and you've got all
31:46these tall tomato plants you get that amazing smell and a very hot ripe tomato is the best kind of tomato
31:58i promised dorian and lois a grapevine in actual fact i've given them three grapevines so you can now
32:15buy at garden centers a pot of grapevines there's three different ones in there there's a green grape
32:22a red grape and a black grape now i'm just tying it in but i have to say once they get going you don't
32:29need to because they have these tendrils that self twine so you might need to sort of tie the odd
32:36branch in but needless to say grapevines they like a nice sunny spot which is absolutely ideal here but
32:43it'll just give some dappled shade over the patio and it sort of just says that oh look at that i feel
32:51like i'm on holiday because of the grapevine
33:03one of my favorite things to grow in a greenhouse is chilies but what's great is they need this warmer
33:09climate and in this greenhouse it's in the perfect location because it gets the morning sun there
33:15there's a tree casting a bit of shade at midday and then you get the evening sun so they are going
33:19to love it in here and the kids can also grow other fun plants like big squashes that will grow
33:24up and hang over and even melons and because we're a little bit further south down here and we're getting
33:30some really good sun you might just get a nice big ripe melon in this greenhouse but further up north
33:37might be a little more difficult
33:47oh just made a very simple straightforward arch out of some hazel branches good thing about hazel branches
33:57is they won't root down if you use willow you've then got a very big willow tree because it will root
34:03down but hazels often used for growing beans up runner beans but i am going to be planting
34:09this honeysuckle this one's lanissera henry of course it will scrabble up these hazel poles but also
34:18up into the tree and you'll have that gorgeous scent that will waft over so it flowers from about june
34:24time through until august great for the insects and i'm just planting it in this just makes it look
34:32very mature the other thing i'm going to plant in this area is a few fruit bushes so when the
34:37children are sat here in the sunshine they can just pluck a few berries off while they're sat watching time
34:44go by
34:57does look nice doesn't it
35:14that could be nice in that gap by the pergola
35:19legs the pergola spilling out yeah yeah yeah great idea
35:34now this is hydrangea paniculata pink lady and i love paniculata hydrangeas because
35:44you get these big panicle shaped flowers that's when they're in this big cone and the best thing
35:49about hydrangeas is that you can get a hydrangea for every spot in the garden so just because you've
35:57got one type don't think oh no i shouldn't have any more hydrangeas i think you should get more because
36:02you can have hydrangeas for shade hydrangeas for a sunnier spot hydrangeas that are big
36:07leaved and furry you can get hydrangeas for everywhere
36:19with plants and fresh produce in place
36:21the raised patio beds and pergola are settled and charlie has created a bird bath to encourage more
36:30wildlife
36:33the team have worked hard to bring this forgotten garden back to life in just two days
36:39oh just testing out your seat you look very comfy there it's lovely nice back to it oh that's good
36:48isn't it you know we were a bit daunted by all this maturity weren't we but actually i think that
36:53now is what makes the garden as well yeah yeah it just finishes it off and they're going to have so
36:58many vegetables slightly over planted but hey ho it's fun it's experimenting you know and then
37:06they'll be in there with the kids growing cucumbers and melons melons oh yeah lots of different things
37:16yeah yeah well do you think it's time to go and get them i think so come on come on
37:20oh when the team arrived this once award-winning allotment hosted nothing but bare grass weeds and
37:31mature trees that were well past their prime
37:39but with a four thousand pound budget it's been transformed into a modern family-friendly space
37:46with new features and nods to its former glory
37:52i'm just going to get you here what will lois and dorian think of their new garden
38:00lois dorian you inherited a beautiful garden with lots and lots of mature plants you want your
38:06children to learn about wildlife grow vegetables and have a space that you can use as a family
38:13do you want to open your eyes oh my gosh wow this is amazing yeah i love this right i've done a
38:25fantastic job like i like this little sun sunflower we actually dug that up oh really so it's an old
38:33circular patio this is beautiful i'm so glad they noticed all the bits of paving because it's tying the
38:40new garden in with the history of the old so we've added a bit more height to the garden with this pergola
38:46so yeah so that would give you a little bit of interest and shade we've got grapevine
38:51so it's because the kids love grapes oh well that's good then so it's crazy yeah
38:57shall we wander down to the produce yes please i just love this yeah can you see yourself sat out here
39:04where lois and dorian's greenhouse was once rubble strewn and barren
39:17it's now ready for growing produce for the entire family so chris has been busy
39:24on the greenhouse wow that's so transformation yeah so it's tidy we've got some tomatoes in there
39:33we've got a chili plant we've got some cucumbers and there's a watermelon as well
39:39oh so you're going to be using that 100 i need that watermelon i need that watermelon and the chilies
39:48and yeah chilies i am very much looking forward to all the produce i'm gonna have yeah right so
39:53wander up to the next bit of produce even this looks amazing
40:02the area in front of the greenhouse was a waste of land overrun by invasive weeds and grass
40:10it's now a screen seating area with various produce planted in two raised beds
40:15surrounding a bench built from sleepers giving you a nice little bench seat to sit on screened
40:22off the greenhouse which will also shade it but we've got peas we've got pumpkins courgettes lettuce
40:30parsley all of that but each year you can change and you can grow from seed so you can grow what you
40:37want to go absolutely it's just incredible this is going to give them such an opportunity to grow
40:43together as a family and then we get to the children's area come and have a look i don't
40:48know if it's going to be the kids area anymore i did wonder about that the area at the entrance to
40:55the old garden that was an uneven and bare patch of grass is now a child-friendly wildlife zone with a
41:03gnarly wood path bespoke seats with bug hotels underneath and wild meadow turf to attract pollinators
41:10and fascinate the children so much character when you've got vegetables and that having wildlife you
41:17get attract butterflies and bees and everything like that it helps with the pollination this is very
41:22magical i just i can't believe you've done this it's just incredible that you can create this with
41:28just your hands like it's just it's incredible isn't it yes so lee has been really busy making
41:34these bespoke seats for the children love them kids us i don't know i was saying i think mum and dad are
41:41going to be bags in those and send the children down there to play get them to a little plastic chair to
41:46put them on the on the side and the bug hotel underneath the seat do you know what's incredible i just love
41:54especially those strawberries that they almost just seem to be growing out of the crack do you think
41:57it was worth it a hundred percent okay yes i have like it's just it's just incredible what you've
42:03managed to achieve in such a short period of time i have to say it wasn't just me it's the landscapers and
42:09chris i've got to clap for you and the team this is a team clap i don't usually give this it's just
42:16phenomenal thank you both so so much the kids are just going to be so excited i cannot wait to see
42:21their reactions so shall we get them out then here they come the team have worked hard to create
42:31a creative and productive family space in luton what can you see over there lois dorian and the
42:39children now have the perfect spot to grow play and be inspired by when i open my eyes i just
42:46couldn't believe the transformation like it's really incredible how they you know just kept
42:53you know a lot of the original character of the garden and kind of blended new elements and weaved
42:58it into it seeing it in real life and kind of walking around and breathing it and living it it's
43:03just just absolutely amazing so for me it wins all the awards
