Manchester United have completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for an initial fee of £65 million plus a further £6m in add-ons. The Cameroon international has signed a contract until June 2030, with the option to extend for a further year.
The 25-year-old was identified as a top target by head coach Ruben Amorim and is expected to form a key part of their first-team squad. Mbeumo completed his medical examinations in Manchester over the weekend and will be named in the United squad for their upcoming pre-season tour of the US. Mbeumo could make his United debut when they face West Ham in the Premier League Summer Series this weekend, and it will be fascinating to see which position he is utilised in.
The Cameroonian scored 20 league goals for Brentford last season and is capable of playing in attacking midfield and on the wing. United view the transfer fee as fair value, looking at the current market for players with less impact. Over the last three seasons, only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Ollie Watkins have more Premier League goals than Mbeumo.
00:00The wait is finally over. Manchester United have completed the signing of Brian Mbwemo from Brentford in the summer transfer window.
00:09The Cameroonian has signed a contract until 2030 with the option of an additional year.
00:15United have paid a fixed fee of £65 million for the Brentford forward, with a further £6 million in potential performance-related add-ons.
00:26United believe that the fee is fair value given the current transfer climate and players going for similar fees and just lower who have had less impact than Mbwemo in the Premier League.
00:37Over the last three seasons, only Erling Haaland, Mo Salah, Alexander Izak and Ollie Watkins have scored more goals than Mbwemo in the Premier League.
00:49So, United have finally got their man. They have finally signed Cunha and Mbwemo, two players who are set to play a key role for Ruben Amarim's side next season.
00:58United are adamant that Mbwemo only ever wanted to join them this summer. That is the same as Mateusz Cunha.
01:04United have not only signed two players who are Premier League proven and who shouldn't have too much trouble adapting to life at Old Trafford,
01:11but two players who are hungry to be part of the future under Ruben Amarim and who want to bring success back to Old Trafford.
01:19We said before that Amarim has been eager to sign players already proven in the Premier League.
01:24He believes that that will improve the athleticism and overall physicality of his side next season.
01:29Of course, United only match 44 Premier League goals as an entire side and Mbwemo and Cunha have 35 between them.
01:37So, United have got their two top targets ahead of their US tour later this week.
01:43Attention will now turn to player sales as United look to address other areas of their squad eventually.
01:49Marcus Rashford is poised to join Barcelona on an initial loan with a future fee of an optional transfer, which would be about £30 million.
01:58United also hope to sell Anthony, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnaccio.
02:02If they do that, they will move on to a striker, then identify a backup goalkeeper and, if possible, sign a defensive midfielder as well.
02:11All that is to come, though, in the final full month of the summer transfer window.
02:14But for now, the headline news is Manchester United have got their man.
