00:00Welcome back to Movie Recaps. Today I will show you a drama film from 2022, titled In Our Prime.
00:06Spoilers ahead. Watch out and take care.
00:09In the most prestigious high school in South Korea where the 1% gathers, Han Ji-woo fails to fit in.
00:15He used to be the smartest student in his old humble school, but here surrounded by geniuses,
00:19he is one step from the bottom of the class, especially in math, which is considered the
00:23most important subject to get into college. His classmates are rich, so they can afford
00:27tutors and boot camps, but Ji-woo is on student welfare and can't afford such things. His math
00:32teacher Mr. Kim Geun-ho, reminds him these grades won't be enough to get into a prestigious college
00:36and asks Ji-woo to consider transferring. One night, Ji-woo's roommates give him money so he can sneak
00:41out and get some snacks and alcohol for everyone, but on his way back, Ji-woo is caught by the night
00:46guard Lee Hock Sung. The following morning, Mr. Kim tries to get him to confess who else was part of
00:51this plan, but Ji-woo values loyalty and stays silent. This catches his classmate Park Boram's
00:56attention but also gets him temporarily kicked out of the dorms. After class, his roommates try
01:01to give him some money as thanks and are shocked to hear Ji-woo doesn't want it because they're
01:04friends. They discuss the possibility of bringing in late-night snacks through other routes, but this
01:09has been impossible since Hock Sung started to work as a guard. They call him the Kami officer because
01:13he's a North Korean defector. Later, Hock Sung goes to see his doctor, who tells him working as a night
01:19guard isn't good for his health and relying on sleeping pills causes his biorhythm to be off.
01:23Hock Sung reminds him that it's the only job he can get as a defector, so unless the doctor can get
01:28him a position somewhere else, he'll take the pills. Afterward, Hock Sung returns to his lonely
01:32apartment, where he spends his time feeding his turtle, drinking strawberry milk, and doing sudoku
01:37puzzles. The following day, Ji-woo is kicked out of the dorms. Boram teases him on his way out,
01:43saying she thought he could be more than a loser, but it seems she was wrong. A couple of hours later,
01:48Ji-woo has returned to his family apartment, which he cleans before his mother comes back from work.
01:52She's a widow that has always worked very hard to raise him, so she's very proud of seeing her son
01:57in such an important uniform. Not having the heart to tell her he needs a place to sleep,
02:01Ji-woo says instead that he only came to visit her and he must return to the school before it gets too
02:05late. It begins raining on his way back, so Ji-woo tries to hide in the school's abandoned lab,
02:10but he's found by Hock Sung. The guard feels bad when he hears Ji-woo doesn't have a place to stay,
02:15so he invites him back to his office. While Ji-woo sleeps, Hock Sung finds the very hard math homework
02:20that Ji-woo couldn't finish. As soon as the sun raises, Hock Sung kicks Ji-woo out. The boy goes
02:26to his math class and is shocked to find his homework has been done by Hock Sung, not only that,
02:30all the answers are correct. Boram notices this and wants Ji-woo to show the teacher, but he asks her
02:35to keep quiet. After class, Ji-woo goes to thank Hock Sung for the help and asks him to teach him how to do
02:40it, but Hock Sung just kicks him out again. Later, in the studying room, Ji-woo hears even his
02:45classmates' private tutors have trouble with some of these math problems, which indicates how special
02:49Hock Sung is. Ji-woo starts following him around, begging to be tutored, but Hock Sung won't pay
02:54attention to him. One afternoon, while he's taking out the trash, Hock Sung overhears the teachers
02:59talking about welfare students with uncaring parents and inferior complexes, and Mr. Kim includes Ji-woo on
03:04the list. When Ji-woo approaches him to ask for tutoring again, Hock Sung tells him it's better to
03:09transfer and that self-pity isn't a badge to carry because it gets you fixated on tragedy. Ji-woo explains
03:14how angry it makes him that others can have opportunities he can't, so Hock Sung gives in
03:18and accepts to tutor him, he only asks for Ji-woo to pay him with strawberry milk. The next day,
03:23Hock Sung visits his friend and Gi-chol, who helped him come to South Korea because he works as Seoul's
03:28North Korean defector support lead. Together they play board games and chat about life, and when Gi-chol
03:33gets Hock Sung the lamps he needed as a gift, Hock Sung insists on paying for them because he didn't come
03:37to this country for charity. When night falls, Hock Sung puts the lamps inside the abandoned lab so he can
03:42teach Ji-woo there in secret. There are three rules Ji-woo must follow. One, nobody must know
03:48about these classes. Two, no questions other than math, and three, Hock Sung will teach math but he
03:53doesn't want to hear anything about grades or tests. After Ji-woo promises to follow all the rules,
03:58Hock Sung gives him the first exercise, finding the area of a triangle. Ji-woo solves it quickly,
04:03pointing out this is a middle school problem, but Hock Sung tells him he's wrong by drawing a full
04:07circle around the triangle. Feeling tricked, Ji-woo thinks it's unfair because Hock Sung has given him the
04:12wrong question, but Hock Sung's point is that he's approaching problem solving the wrong way.
04:16Yes, finding the answer it's important, but understanding what the question is,
04:20that's what is even more important. Math is all about the process of finding a solution.
04:24When Ji-woo shows an understanding of the concept, Hock Sung calls it epsilon as he has a flashback of
04:29how a younger he and a friend received a fancy pen as a prize for their academic success.
04:33Epsilon means small and insignificant, trivial even. After the class is over, since Ji-woo still doesn't
04:39have a place to go, Hock Sung allows him to stay with him. Ji-woo discovers that Hock Sung loves
04:43listening to classical music on an old cassette player, so they chat about classical composers for
04:48a while, which helps Hock Sung avoid Ji-woo's questions about his past. The cassette is worn out
04:52and has a bad sound quality, so Ji-woo plays the songs on his phone, the quality of which fascinates
04:57Hock Sung and helps him sleep deeply for the first time in ages. In fact, he stays in bed until late the
05:02next morning, and when he wakes up, Ji-woo has already left for class. Mr. Kim has some important news for his
05:08math students, instead of having finals, his class will participate in the prestigious Pythagoras math
05:13competition, which will count as their exam. The teens aren't happy about this since they only have
05:17two months to practice, but Mr. Kim expects them all to win gold. Ji-woo goes to see Hock Sung every
05:22day for math classes, and Borom begins noticing how often Ji-woo purchases strawberry milk, almost as if he
05:28was an addict. One evening, there's a particularly hard exercise that Ji-woo needs to know the technique to
05:33solve, but Hock Sung explains he expects him to add it all up manually. Three hours later, Ji-woo
05:38manages to solve it, so Hock Sung shows him something special. Famous mathematician Bernhard Riemann
05:43calculated 38 decimals of the square root of two by hand to become intimate with the solving process,
05:48which you can't do by just memorizing a formula. This is greatly helpful when it comes to a better
05:52understanding of math. Hock Sung refuses to tell Ji-woo if his answer is right or wrong because his
05:57homework will be to discover it himself. That's the job of a mathematician. As the weeks pass, Ji-woo improves
06:03his math skills more and more every day. One afternoon, he receives some devastating news,
06:08a close friend and fellow welfare student is transferring back to his old school, admitting
06:12having come here was never worth it. Now Ji-woo has some thinking to do about his own situation,
06:16and Borom tries to hear him out, but he feels like she's making fun of him by saying they're in the same
06:21situation when she's actually a rich kid too. Their conversation is interrupted when Borom's mother
06:25comes to pick her up. When they get in the car, Borom is scolded for hanging out with a welfare kid,
06:30Borom is technically on welfare too because of her divorced parents, but she isn't on financial aid,
06:35so it isn't really the same. Her mother also scolds her for listening to piano music because
06:39she wants Borom to concentrate on her studies, so she's hired Mr. Kim to be Borom's private tutor,
06:44which is illegal. Later that night, Ji-woo tells Hock Sung about his friend and wonders if he should
06:49transfer too. Hock Sung encourages him not to give up and reminds him the most important thing to succeed
06:54isn't intelligence but courage to prevail until the end. To prove his point, he shows Ji-woo the
06:59exercises he corrected, while there are some mistakes in the final solutions, the boy has
07:03correctly learned the process to solve them. That same night, Ji-woo's suspension ends so he gets
07:07to go back to the dorms, but he admits missing sharing a space with Hock Sung. The next day,
07:12Borom gifts him strawberry milk with an apology note, and when he gets distracted,
07:16she follows him to the abandoned lab and discovers his secret. After thanking Hock Sung for taking care of
07:21Ji-woo, she asks if she can come over from time to time, and Hock Sung accepts as long as she keeps
07:25it a secret too. Borom also calls him Kami officer and this confuses Hock Sung, he may be from North
07:31Korea, but he never served in the military. For a reason he doesn't bother to explain, he was
07:36exempted. At that moment, they notice a group of students sneaking around the campus, but having
07:40learned what happened to Ji-woo last time, Hock Sung decides to do nothing about it. Another evening,
07:45Ji-woo asks Hock Sung why he studied math so hard. He explains that at first, he did it for the
07:50scholarship and the sake of his family, but the more he learned about it the more beautiful he found it,
07:54so he fell in love with it. Then, they call Borom to join Hock Sung at the piano so he can teach her
07:59a cool little trick, assigning a note to each digit, the two of them make a beautiful melody by playing
08:04the number pi. During the next math class, Ji-woo corrects Mr. Kim's answer to an exercise using the
08:09logic Hock Sung taught him about incorrect questions. However, Mr. Kim scolds him for it, the answer may be
08:15correct, but it's not what the examiner intended, and that's the only thing the students need to worry
08:19about, giving the solution that is expected, not the one that is right. It's all about test technique,
08:24but Ji-woo doesn't accept this and replies he'll still give the right answer on the test.
08:28Considering him rude for such attitude, Mr. Kim makes him stand outside the door for the rest of
08:32the class. Afterward, Ji-woo informs Mr. Kim that he won't be transferring. In the afternoon, during
08:38another of Hock Sung's visits, Gi-chul gives him a smartphone so he's easier to find. Hock Sung happily
08:44shows it to Ji-woo later, and the boy can't help noticing he's reading long theses on this tiny
08:48screen. To help, Ji-woo asks a classmate to sneak him into the computer lab so he can print the entire
08:53document and gift it to Hock Sung. The next day is the Pythagoras test. Ji-woo is doing wonderful
08:58thanks to Hock Sung's lessons, and while Borom starts well enough by remembering the music,
09:02she soon gets frustrated. Pressure takes a toll on her, and she ends up leaving the classroom without
09:07finishing the exam. Her mother makes her stay home to avoid shame and lies to the school, saying that
09:12they'll go away on a trip. When Ji-woo tries to contact her, all his texts are ignored. In the
09:17evening, Ji-woo and Hock Sung go to a classical concert that Borom got them free tickets for because
09:21her family's company sponsors it. Borom never shows up, but at least Hock Sung enjoys it so much that
09:26he's moved to tears. Afterward, Hock Sung invites Ji-woo to have dinner at his place, which makes Ji-woo
09:32realize this is the first time he sees Hock Sung eat. That same night, someone leaks the Pythagoras test
09:37on the internet, causing trouble for the teachers, who now must find the student that did it if they
09:41don't want the education board to fire them. Meanwhile, Ji-woo and Hock Sung go to a bookstore
09:46to do some shopping, and a stranger recognizes Hock Sung. This man also comes from North Korea
09:51and calls Hock Sung doctor, remembering him from the days Hock Sung taught classes at the university
09:55he attended. The man also calls Hock Sung the famous mathematical genius and thinks Ji-woo is his son,
10:00which puts them in an awkward situation. Hock Sung thanks the man for the memory and rushes to leave
10:05the store, refusing to answer Ji-woo's questions. When he gets home, Hock Sung remembers the good times
10:10he used to have with his son Lee Tae-yeon, like having dinner together, getting the turtle,
10:14and buying strawberry milk because it was Tae-yeon's favorite. The next day, some important news
10:19appears on TV, the Riemann hypothesis, one of the most important mathematical problems,
10:24is about to be solved by a famous North Korean called Lee Hock Sung, so far it's still ongoing
10:28review by a board of scholars. Professor Oh on TV tells the story of how he entered a math
10:33Olympiad when he was a kid and met Hock Sung, who represented the North while Oh represented the
10:37South. They both were given a fancy pen by a famous mathematician and Oh still has it to this day.
10:43Both Gi-chol and Ji-woo see the news, and it's Ji-woo that finds Hock Sung first to ask him about it.
10:48However, Hock Sung gets angry and asks him to never mention the Riemann hypothesis again.
10:53Meanwhile, Mr. Kim is having trouble with the test incident because his reputation is on the line,
10:57but when a co-worker reviews the security tapes after a student passed on some rumors,
11:01he finds his salvation. The following day, Mr. Kim calls Ji-woo to show him the recording of him
11:06sneaking out of the computer lab with some printed sheets in his hands. Ji-woo tries to explain that
11:10it's unrelated, but he has no way to prove it. Between the tape evidence and the fact he magically
11:15became better at math in a few months, nobody will believe him, so Mr. Kim offers him a deal,
11:19if he accepts to transfer, he won't make his blame public. Sadly, the rumors of Ji-woo having done the
11:25leaking still reach everyone's ears, and Borom gets upset about it because she knows the truth.
11:30Gi-chol is having some trouble of his own too. North Korea is angry that the South is taking
11:34Hock Sung's achievements, especially since these discoveries are tied to military encryption,
11:38so the niche wants Gi-chol to convince Hock Sung to appear on TV to clarify matters.
11:43Hock Sung's name is all over the news now, and an old colleague even visits him to convince him to
11:47return to the North together. However, he puts his foot in his mouth when he admits he's asking
11:51because bringing Hock Sung would earn him forgiveness too, and only manages to anger him
11:55by bringing up what happened to his son. Gi-chol visits Hock Sung to apologize for not being able
12:00to keep the niche off his back, but Hock Sung is still thankful for all the years of protection.
12:04While Hock Sung's packing to leave town, Gi-chol returns to him the document with his research,
12:08with Hock Sung tried to throw away years ago and Gi-chol saved it because it was too valuable to be trash.
12:14At that moment, Ji-woo arrives as well, but he decides to stay outside when he hears yelling.
12:18Hock Sung is angry because it was this research that cost him his son's life,
12:22so he refuses to put it on TV. After Gi-chol leaves, Gi-woo tries to talk to Hock Sung,
12:27but the old man only lashes out at him, refusing to accept they are anything closer than tutor and
12:32student. Afterward, Gi-woo gets a call from an upset Borom, who doesn't understand why he's
12:36letting them frame him like this, but he just tells her it's over and hangs up. In the meantime,
12:41Hock Sung arrives at the bus station and when he thinks he saw his son's face on a random stranger,
12:45he begins to remember the night Ta-yeon died. After he got into another fight for defending
12:49fellow defectors, Ta-yeon began arguing with his dad, accusing him of having escaped to the south
12:54for selfish reasons because he didn't do it when his mom was sick with tuberculosis.
12:58Hock Sung insisted he did it to give his son a better life, but Ta-yeon pointed out that doing
13:02entry jobs and being treated like dirt was far from a better life for a scholar. After wishing his dad
13:07to enjoy his life with only math as a company, Ta-yeon ran away and tried to go back to the north by
13:11swimming, but he was shot on sight by border patrol. Back to Gi-woo, he sneaks into his home to use her
13:16mother's stamp on the transfer papers while she's sleeping. The next morning, he hands the papers
13:21to Mr. Kim, who tells him he did the right thing. Hock Sung is hiding in a hotel while Gi-chul searches
13:26for him to take him to the TV show, and he is surprised to get a call from Borom telling him
13:30about Gi-woo's transfer. That afternoon is the Pythagoras award ceremony. Gi-woo is on his way out of the
13:35school, but Borom suddenly arrives and drags him with her to the auditorium by stealing his stuff.
13:40Professor Oh opens the ceremony with a speech about the recently proven theory, and that's the moment
13:45Hock Sung decides to interrupt, having rushed over to the school after freeing his turtle on the river.
13:49He presents his pen as proof of his identity, so Professor Oh receives him with open arms and
13:53allows him to give a speech too. After making a joke about his work as a guard, Hock Sung confesses
13:58he was the one that taught Gi-woo math and presents the printed thesis as proof that he didn't leak the
14:02test. He also reveals that it was Mr. Kim that leaked the test to his private students, which causes Mr.
14:07Kim to leave with anger and shame. Then, Hock Sung shares a bit of his story, he defected North Korea
14:13so he could study math properly, because his own government was using his research to build weapons.
14:18He wants his math to be used to find jobs and get into good colleges, but such greed cost him his son's
14:22life. Hock Sung is ashamed of his choices, yet Gi-woo never saw him that way and stayed loyal to his
14:27secret until the end even if it would cost him his future. Crying, Hock Sung apologizes and thanks Gi-woo
14:33for believing in him, and such speech makes Gi-chul, who has been listening all along, leave without
14:37even asking about the TV interview. He does however, wait for Hock Sung outside and offer him a ride.
14:43After throwing away the smartphone he had gifted him, Gi-chul reveals a little surprise for Hock Sung,
14:47a new, legal passport that marks Hock Sung as a South Korean citizen, and tickets for him to leave town
14:52so the niche can't find him for a while. Gi-chul will probably get fired for it, but he thinks it's
14:57worth it. Sometime later, Gi-chul visits Gi-woo to give him the gift Hock Sung left for him,
15:02the famous pen in the first draft of his thesis. Three years later, Gi-woo and his college class
15:07visit the prestigious Oberwolfak Research Institute for Mathematics. Hock Sung is working there now,
15:12and Gi-woo surprises him with some strawberry milk and a hug before diving into a long talk about math.
