32:38today as a series of bomb threats that

32:40were sent out to multiple schools in Delhi

32:42and Bengaluru, triggering swift

32:44action from police, security

32:46agencies and school authorities.

32:48In Bengaluru, 40 private

32:50schools received threatening emails saying

32:52you all deserve to

32:54suffer, unquote. In Delhi,

32:56a similar message that was sent out to 45

32:58schools. While most of these

33:00threats turned out to be hoax

33:01emails, as expected, it

33:04caused widespread panic and major

33:06disruption. Once again, raising

33:07serious concerns about

33:09school security.

33:11But what is particularly

33:12concerning is the fact that in most

33:14of these cases, it is students

33:15themselves who have been found

33:17to have been sending these hoax

33:19emails. Now remember,

33:21in India, if a false

33:23bomb threat is given,

33:25there are serious legal consequences

33:26to it.

33:28Under BNS,

33:29several sections that can be invoked.

33:31So Section 176 for giving false

33:33information, Section 353

33:35for obstructing public services

33:37and in more serious matters

33:39based on where the investigation

33:41leads. Section 124 can also

33:43be invoked, which is criminal

33:44intimidation, and Section 281

33:47for spreading false

33:48rumors. But the case becomes

33:50completely different when it is

33:52a minor who is sending out that

33:54bomb threat. And today joining me in

33:56the studio are my colleagues Seema and

33:58Tanisha, but they speak not as

34:01journalists as mothers on where

34:04the larger problem lies.

34:10Unfortunately, minors have also

34:12been found to send out these

34:13emails. They are students of the

34:15school itself. In fact, in one of

34:16the incidents, the child said it

34:18was a joke. In another incident,

34:20the child said that I wanted to

34:21escape an exam and that is why I

34:22sent out this email. And strict

34:25action cannot be taken because it

34:27is a student itself. Maximum of

34:29warning can be given or the child

34:31can be sent for counseling. Do you

34:33think this is enough?

34:35So I'm saying that, you know, I'm

34:38considering that, you know, 12

34:39years old is a, you know, is not

34:42even a tween, not a teen. So I have

34:46a 12 year old and I'm talking to, I'm

34:49talking as a mother here. So it's,

34:51it's not the right way to actually

34:53punish or to do any kind of a, you

34:57know, corporate punishment or any

34:59kind of a punishment to a child. And

35:02all this BNS, which you are talking

35:04about, the sections and all, so they

35:05all applies to adults. So here we are

35:08dealing with the kids who are saying

35:09you all deserve to suffer, quote

35:11unquote. And as you are saying that,

35:13you know, it's a joke day. So these

35:15are, mind you, these are 12 year old.

35:17Like there are a lot of things are

35:18happening around in their mind. So it

35:21is not the punishment, which will

35:22work for them. What will work for

35:24them is the counseling or maybe some

35:27kind of, you know, therapy or which

35:29includes their parents because it's

35:31not them. It's the parents who need

35:33to be, you know, responsible for or

35:35the accountable for that.

35:36Tanisha, do you agree? Because we no

35:38more live in times where we just

35:40whack the child or give a beating back

35:42of how we may have been raised and

35:45you know, the child listens. Those are

35:47not the times we live in, but

35:49shouldn't there be serious measures

35:51that should be taken? Now, whether

35:53it's suspension, whether it is

35:55expulsion and some may argue that

35:57that can ruin the child's future, but

35:59there must be a serious corrective

36:01measure. So while I agree with

36:03Seema that, you know, of course,

36:05therapy in some cases is essential

36:07depending on, you know, where this is

36:09coming from, but we must remember

36:11that these children have access, they

36:13have exposure and in many cases

36:15they're very well aware of what they're

36:17doing. It's a form of rebellion, right?

36:19And when it comes to rebellion, when I

36:21go back to how we were raised,

36:23whenever there was a situation like

36:24this, we were held accountable for

36:26our actions and that prepared us for

36:29how we would be in our lives, you

36:32know, as adults, right? So I feel as

36:35parents, we have a responsibility also

36:37to teach our children that your actions

36:39will have consequences. So I don't

36:41agree that there should be no

36:43consequences. I think there should be

36:44harsh consequences because let's

36:46remember, you know, 12, 13, 14, 15,

36:5016, 18, they are minors, but the issue

36:52is not minor. It's a bigger problem

36:55that causes a huge collective problem.

36:58You know, tomorrow if there's actually a

37:00bomb threat, you know, people may not

37:02take it seriously because of these

37:03hundreds of, you know, hoax calls that

37:05children are doing. So and also the

37:08other problem is that if we don't set an

37:09example, if we are not strict about this

37:13situation now, then you are, what is the

37:16message you're giving to, you know, the

37:18society at large? You know, as a mother, I

37:21ask, are we in a bid to become friends

37:25with our children, over pampering them

37:28such that they get such a strong sense of

37:31entitlement that they don't know where to

37:32draw the line? I completely get it and

37:35as you're also saying that we are

37:36protective to them. But the point here is,

37:39you know, what is the strict action has

37:42to be taken? So when, as you are saying

37:44about the expulsion or about, you know,

37:46maybe the suspension, these are not for

37:4912 year old kids. I would say because

37:53if, what's the point of, you know,

37:55identifying them into, in the public or in

37:59the school or something like that? So this

38:00will actually, you know, degrade what you

38:02wanted to create out of the child. What is

38:05the possibility that they will, you know,

38:07fail mentally, torture after that and all

38:09those kind of things. So I completely feel

38:11that yes, there are overprotective

38:13parents, fine. But it is a parent who

38:17needs to take the responsibility and

38:19accountability of the whole thing and the

38:21counselling of the child and including

38:23the parent is necessary rather than, you

38:26know, talking about, you know, giving some

38:27harsh punishment or some kind of, you

38:30know, what you're talking about. So I

38:32would say that, you know, it's big no no

38:34for me. But how much can a parent really

38:36control given that we live in times

38:39where both parents are mostly working and,

38:41you know, there is only so much that you

38:43can continue to find out and connect on

38:46with the child. And this is a serious

38:49problem. What if there is a bomb threat

38:51that is for real? I mean, parents are now

38:54reaching a stage where so many of them

38:55have been hoax threats that, you know,

38:58somewhere they take it with a pinch of

38:59solve that this may not be real. You're

39:01absolutely right. That's what I'm saying

39:02that, you know, this is this is going to

39:04lead to a much more serious consequences.

39:06If we don't take action now, whatever

39:08that action might be, obviously, we have

39:10to ensure that it is in, you know, in

39:12sync with the mental well-being of the

39:13child. You know, the parents have to be

39:16on board as well, because I think it's a

39:17collective responsibility of us as

39:19parents to raise responsible citizens. Right.

39:22And it starts from parenting. You know, we

39:25are it's our responsibility as parents to

39:27raise them as, you know, responsible

39:29citizens. And this is the first step

39:31taking, you know, responsibility for your

39:33actions, consequences. Right. So I think

39:36we need to come up with a sort of plan on,

39:38you know, how we can make them aware of

39:41the responsibility of the consequences,

39:44while at the same time making sure that

39:45their mental health is taken care of, given

39:47that we live in such fragile times.

39:50You know, initially when these bomb threat

39:52emails used to come, there used to be chaos

39:55outside schools and the cops would reach

39:57and the parents would rush to pick up

39:59their children. Now, of course, like I

40:01said, it has been repetitive. So the

40:03parents also don't react as strongly,

40:05which is a disturbing trend. Secondly,

40:08initially parents really wanted answers

40:11from the cops, from cybersecurity officials

40:13to what the source of these emails are. And

40:16in some cases, it was also found that it

40:18was from outside of India. But now with

40:20these particular cases of students sending

40:23emails themselves, where do we pin the

40:27problem and how do we focus on how to

40:29come out of it?

40:30So the problems comes clearly. See, you

40:33yourself says, you know, escaping the

40:34exam. Okay. So we need to go to the

40:36source of the problem. Because if you're

40:38not going to the source of the problem,

40:40why the child is actually, as you're

40:41saying, busy parent or the working parent

40:43something. So why the child is escaping

40:45the exam? So we need to work on that

40:47rather to, you know, do an action which

40:49will actually give, you know, worse for

40:51the child. And as we know that the child

40:54is around of this much age, which has

40:56caused some kind of, you know, trouble in

40:57the, in Delhi. So 12 year old is a

41:00different mind. They are nowhere. So this

41:03is a time for the, you know, parents all

41:05sometime you feel that they are friends and

41:07sometime you feel that they are very

41:08mature. So this is a different kind of,

41:11you know, the breed that we are talking

41:12about. So we actually need to work on the

41:15source rather, you know, working on the,

41:17some kind of a punishment, Q school, you

41:20know, suspend and any kind of a thing

41:22that we are talking about it. So I would

41:24say, yeah. See, I think we need to know

41:27where we're going to draw the line, right?

41:29Now you're giving a bomb hoax and you say

41:31it was a joke because I'm going to miss

41:32the exam. Sounds simple, not so difficult,

41:34right? But then where do you draw the line?

41:36We know what's happening in the US right

41:37now in schools, right? You know, so do we

41:41really as a society, I mean, let's, let's

41:42be fair, like a 13 year old knows what

41:45maybe an 18, 19, 20 year old knew in terms

41:48of access to information in our

41:51generation, right? So a 13 year old is far

41:53more exposed, far more aware, right? And

41:56they have, it's an act of rebellion right

41:58now. Where do you draw the line?

42:00And that is exactly my point. In the US,

42:02there is the gun culture. Absolutely. In

42:03schools and they just walk out and openly

42:05start shooting. I mean, in terms of how

42:08the minds of these children are shaping

42:10in our culture, in our setup. And by not

42:14doing anything, what is the message you're

42:15giving to the others? Yeah. So you are

42:17completely right about the US, but I'm

42:19talking about the parent in India and we

42:22don't have a gun culture in the school.

42:24You are talking, I think you're taking it too

42:27long. But Seema, we never had a bomb

42:30hoax culture either. Exactly. I agree.

42:35are here or not there again. We're not in

42:37US. We are actually traveling a little bit
