Interview with Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Debicki.
Transcript
00:00I want to start by actually talking about a speech that Elizabeth Bender gives in this
00:03uh movie to Maxine where she talks about being in the belly of the beast and not wanting to be spit
00:09out and having the beast lose a taste for you which I imagine I mean this is a very competitive
00:14industry I'm curious if either of you have ever had somebody give that speech to you or and just
00:21how much you can relate to the idea no one's ever given me that terrifying speech thank god but um
00:28I think you can be fed a kind of messaging when you're a young actor that uh there's always someone
00:38right behind you to take your place and actually that's not true and it's really it's a kind of
00:45it's really important to realize that for yourself creatively because it sort of can like
00:50circumnavigate some of your choices or short you can shortcut yourself a little bit but actually
00:56you can only do the thing you can do and it's not right for everything and it's not applicable
01:00for everything and you're not going to get every job you want but you should kind of just like let
01:05yourself be the thing you are you know and that was a happy realization when I realized there wasn't
01:11someone that was about to like pull the rug out um so you go a little gentle with yourself and let
01:17yourself be braver I don't know if that was the answer absolutely what would you what about you
01:23uh well I mean I think that's I would have liked to have heard maybe a speech like that but but
01:30you know I was a uh and I'm not this was a mistake when I when I started out I didn't want advice from
01:37anybody I thought I knew everything there was to know about acting I didn't like acting teachers telling
01:45me how to act I learned so much from acting teachers I didn't want anybody in the business I thought I knew
01:50the business inside and out I mean I was like completely uh cocky and self-assured in a uh uh
02:00in a in a in a way that I I wouldn't say I have regrets about it but but if I if I was thinking back
02:06I should have stopped and looked for somebody to give me some piece of advice that I could have adhered to
02:12for sure um but I just didn't and uh so I think as a result no I don't think I don't remember anybody
02:19giving me career advice really um maybe Elliot Gould once said if you're on a um if you're on a press
02:27tour you're working for free so you can order up anything you want from room service and don't feel
02:33bad about it good advice that was good advice yeah exactly free food always take free food that is yeah
