00:00:00from Cagliari, a splendid mild evening with a bit of breeze to it after a day of splendid sunshine
00:00:08and really a showdown night for England now where a victory would end all the arguments
00:00:15all the need for those computers and calculators and would be sure of a place in the second phase
00:00:22of this 1990 World Cup. John Barnes on the ball on the far side, Stuart Pierce up there,
00:00:27Trevor Francis with me, how best should they set about this task tonight Trevor?
00:00:31Well undoubtedly with Bolin Lineker up front and Waddle and Barnes pushing forward on the wings
00:00:36it's an attacking formation, we definitely need to win but I'm just concerned about the Egyptians
00:00:40because they've proved against the Republic of Ireland and also against Holland that they do know
00:00:45how to defend and it concerns me that they may just try and defend a day in the hope of getting
00:00:49the extra point and perhaps going into a draw, England can't afford to do that.
00:00:57Referee tonight from Switzerland, Kurt Roethlundsberger
00:01:00and Barnes again, Gascoigne, such a big influence on the midfield against the Dutch
00:01:06quickly with the free kick
00:01:08Trevor suggesting Waddle and Barnes, real key men for England, getting to that byline
00:01:18getting in behind this Egyptian defence
00:01:20it was shown that they play with a lot of caution but also with a lot of skill
00:01:25And of Ramsey with the ball back to Ahmed Shubir
00:01:41who's a splendid goalkeeper but you may remember he had a yellow card for time-wasting against the Republic of Ireland
00:01:50long clearance by him, normally the only man up for the Egyptians would be their splendid young striker
00:01:55Hossein Hussain
00:01:56here's Lineker
00:01:58here's Lineker
00:01:59right
00:02:01and Pearce
00:02:04all hit forward again towards Bull but Yacan there first, in goes Gascoigne, very positive indeed
00:02:11but away come Elkas
00:02:18and Walker, thankfully, England defender with an awful lot of pace which he might well need tonight against
00:02:26Hossein
00:02:28to Peter Shilton, the skipper for tonight, with Brian Robson out
00:02:32Paul Parker
00:02:34pit forward towards Gary Lineker
00:02:37Lineker
00:02:39no foul but he lost his footing there just for a moment against Rabi Yacan
00:02:44Hassan
00:02:49forward to his twin brother
00:02:51Elhamid, the captain
00:03:00Yacan
00:03:03they've scored only once in their two qualifying games, that from the penalty spot against the Dutch in a 1-1 draw
00:03:28England for their part of the
00:03:30the score
00:03:32scored just once Gary Lineker
00:03:33Gary Lineker
00:03:40Lineker now
00:03:41Gascoigne
00:03:42the angle wasn't right for him
00:03:44now Mark Wright
00:03:45to Stuart Pearce
00:03:46Barnes
00:03:48given away there to Hossein
00:03:52Abdul Ghani
00:04:04Ramsey
00:04:05Elhamid
00:04:09Abdul Ghani
00:04:14and this is Hanni Ramsey
00:04:1621 year old
00:04:17who had such a terrific game against the Republic of Ireland
00:04:20their last man plays very shrewdly, reads it very well
00:04:26and his calmness personified
00:04:29he'll take a lot of shaking out of his stride
00:04:32when he's thrown
00:04:36come on
00:04:38comes his throw
00:04:39comes his throw
00:04:45Yacan
00:04:46This is Hassan, the fallback.
00:05:03Youssef, Abdul Ghani, Hassan, Youssef, this is Robert, too slow.
00:05:14He just held off the challenge of Hassan, and gave a difficult ball there to Pearce.
00:05:26Youssef, in goes Pearce.
00:05:31The charts now opening up for one of those marauding runs of his.
00:05:34Bull is up ahead of him, Lineker's in there too, Gascoigne's coming up in support as Pearce goes on,
00:05:39and Hassan gets back, and it'll be a goal kick.
00:05:44Trevor Francis?
00:05:48Yes, that's just the type of play that England needed, because it's very apparent in the first five minutes
00:05:52that the Egyptians, playing a very, very slow tempo game, slowing it down, short passing game, frustrating England.
00:05:59This is not what England want.
00:06:00England have got to play at a high tempo, and Pearce set the store there with a good run forward.
00:06:04That's the tempo that we've got to play at.
00:06:06Right out-jumped, but Walker no way outpaced by Hassan.
00:06:18And Wright took a bit of a knock there when he jumped for that ball.
00:06:22Lineker chasing and hustling and getting a mistake out of Yacan,
00:06:25but the referee had spotted a foul by the England number 10.
00:06:33A free kick to Egypt.
00:06:41Foul that was hard to detect, I must say.
00:06:43Foul.
00:06:51Foul.
00:06:53The caution already beginning to spread,
00:06:54you sense right through this Egyptian side, just as it did on Sunday.
00:06:57and England are to get a victory
00:07:08it's a victory that's got to be
00:07:10built on patience
00:07:12but also on the ability
00:07:14to shake the Egyptians out of their
00:07:16calculating stride
00:07:18this is El Kass
00:07:24forward to El Hamid
00:07:27he's given the ball to Bull
00:07:28almost the first touch that Steeples had
00:07:30Barnes
00:07:31here's Lineker
00:07:33trying to get past Yacan again
00:07:41this time the free kick's given England's way
00:07:44but he fouled by the defender Yacan
00:07:46and
00:07:48Ibrahim Hassan
00:07:52that was certainly Yacan's foul
00:07:56can't see why the referee was talking to the number two
00:08:00but it's a free kick to England at any rate
00:08:02Kaspo envisying himself over there
00:08:07Waddle also
00:08:09and quite a clutch of white shirts in that six yard area
00:08:12to put pressure
00:08:13on the Egyptians in their own six yard area
00:08:16and it was El Hamid who got it away without a great deal of conviction
00:08:23and it may be Trevor Francis that Bobby Robson has spotted that there's a possible weakness in the air
00:08:29from crosses in this Egyptian defence
00:08:32they certainly piled a lot of men in for that free kick
00:08:34yes and possibly one of the reasons why Steve Bull is in the attack
00:08:37because as we know he is very very good with his head
00:08:39we've got Mark Wright there
00:08:40and we do need to compensate from these sort of corners
00:08:43right at the near post
00:08:44looking for the flick on
00:08:45Parker in there too
00:08:48and it goes behind for the goal kick
00:08:51just look at the amount of time they take
00:09:07this early in the game
00:09:08for those goal kicks
00:09:09positive header by Mark Wright
00:09:13looking to get Steve Bull on his way
00:09:15good tackle though
00:09:20by the Egyptian
00:09:23number three
00:09:25Yassin
00:09:28Parker's throw
00:09:30short to Gascoigne
00:09:33little thick to Parker
00:09:35Paul needing to back Kettle
00:09:40finds an ally in Stuart Pearce
00:09:42the cross comes in again
00:09:43Waddle trying to lay it into the path of Lineker
00:09:46Barnes in there
00:09:48Lineker in there
00:09:50and in the end
00:09:51it's Hassan who gets it away
00:09:52here's right for England
00:09:54Walker back there too
00:09:56and the safe way out
00:09:59is the long back pass to Peter Shilton
00:10:01long ball forward
00:10:09looking for a mistake
00:10:10ball trying to get in there
00:10:11and make something of it
00:10:12Hanni Ramsey
00:10:13getting the header clear for Egypt
00:10:15ten minutes gone
00:10:18no chance really carved out
00:10:20by either side yet
00:10:21Pearce with the throw
00:10:23for England
00:10:23Wright going forward
00:10:26number 14
00:10:27as you can see
00:10:28it's a good long throw
00:10:34Wright looking for the little knock on
00:10:36Barnes hoping to pick up a piece here for England
00:10:39and the throw goes to Egypt
00:10:42on a night when the stadium
00:10:45incidentally is
00:10:46probably only half full here
00:10:48strong contingent from the Egyptian navy
00:10:54Walker
00:10:58right
00:11:02hit towards Bull again
00:11:04knocking it down
00:11:05but tried to get it towards McMahon
00:11:07who really hasn't been able to assert himself
00:11:09yet through that midfield area
00:11:11this is Hassan
00:11:14up to Guy
00:11:16handball there
00:11:22so the referee
00:11:23by
00:11:23Hassan
00:11:24Hassan
00:11:25Swiss referee
00:11:27Mr. Rothlinsberger
00:11:3039 year old teacher
00:11:31Wollop
00:11:34and a path of McMahon
00:11:36here's Barnes
00:11:38with Pearce going outside him
00:11:39looking maybe to get to that byline again
00:11:44Ramsey with the clearance for Egypt
00:11:46McMahon
00:11:51El-Kass
00:11:53this is Yousef
00:11:55and Wright back to goalkeeper Peter Shilton
00:12:00Degani
00:12:20that's fine
00:12:22there's Parker
00:12:23roving that ball forward to Lineker
00:12:26England throw
00:12:30four games played in this group
00:12:38before tonight
00:12:39only four goals scored
00:12:41Pearson
00:12:44and a night for positive action for England
00:12:47still 0-0
00:12:49with about 12 minutes of the game gone
00:12:51with the stadium only again half full
00:12:53and not so many England supporters here
00:12:56that there has been at the previous two games
00:12:57somewhat lacking in atmosphere at the present moment
00:13:00and it's not helping England
00:13:01I think also that whereas most of the stadiums here in Italy
00:13:04they seem to be in close
00:13:06the sound tends to go out of the stadium here
00:13:08and it's not helping the players
00:13:09right with a header
00:13:19the Egyptians certainly gave a warning
00:13:26before this World Cup
00:13:28with a splendid 3-1 victory
00:13:30against Scotland in Aberdeen
00:13:31that there were certainly
00:13:32going to be no pushovers
00:13:34something they emphasised
00:13:36with their 1-1 draw against Holland
00:13:38and that goal is draw against the Republic of Ireland
00:13:40but they were telling me up in Aberdeen
00:13:42that the night of the Scottish
00:13:43the victory over Scotland
00:13:44that whatever they did in the World Cup
00:13:47a victory over England was going to be their
00:13:49one big priority
00:13:51and they said
00:13:53we should be saving up something
00:13:55very special for England on that night
00:13:57some running repairs
00:14:04here for I think El Cas
00:14:07but the game going on
00:14:10Yassin
00:14:11taken away by McMahon
00:14:12tried to get it through to Steve Ball
00:14:15Barnes coming and following it in
00:14:17but
00:14:18again not jumping with great conviction
00:14:20and
00:14:21Adil Ghami getting it away
00:14:22Yusef
00:14:26Yusef again
00:14:33and a handball by
00:14:38Stuart Pearce
00:14:40as the treatment goes on
00:14:45with a nasty cut
00:14:46the bridge of the nose
00:14:49and a free kick to Egypt on the field
00:14:57well Hamid the injured player
00:15:03but ready to come back on
00:15:04this is Yakkan
00:15:09back to Shubila
00:15:13and her hands-y
00:15:26to Yacan
00:15:30and back to Shubia
00:15:34the world
00:15:37this suits the Egyptians this style of play it doesn't suit our type of play at all
00:15:43oh getting the header in and finding Lineker but the touch is in no way likely to reach Gascoigne
00:15:49spoke before the game or just at the start of the game about England playing with Lineker
00:15:54and Bull up front with Waddle and Barnes getting forward to support them
00:15:58well virtually two wide players are playing as midfield players they're not getting forward at all
00:16:02they've got to get forward to support Bull in Lineker
00:16:05Barnes
00:16:07quite right very withdrawn and so in every sense and so too is Waddle
00:16:13Abdelgani
00:16:15Abdelgani again
00:16:19to Yacan
00:16:21to Ibrahim Hassan
00:16:26and Yacan
00:16:30some of the England fans already whistling in frustration at these Egyptian tactics but
00:16:43they should have known from Palermo on Sunday against the Republic of Ireland it's the way they play
00:16:49they've got a free kick now though
00:16:51the foul by Mark Wright
00:16:53on Hassan
00:16:55up goes right
00:17:04practically probably the ball probably hit Hassan on the head
00:17:07so a free kick to Egypt
00:17:13maybe the first little worrying moment for England
00:17:17it's Peter Shulton
00:17:24make sure the angles are right
00:17:27there are four in the English wall
00:17:28Yussef in there
00:17:32Hassan in there
00:17:33El Kass in there
00:17:34and El Hamid
00:17:36there's the free kick
00:17:38floated towards
00:17:40El Hamid but it was Wright's header that got it away
00:17:43Yussef with the throw
00:17:54everything done
00:17:57at a really pleasurely pace
00:17:59the seconds being eaten up all the time
00:18:01there's the cross coming in
00:18:02Yussef couldn't get a touch on it
00:18:05goodness he might have got a touch on that though
00:18:07the shot from El Kass
00:18:09Barnes not making much ground with the header
00:18:22there's the shot which
00:18:23had it been deflected
00:18:25could easily have gone wide of
00:18:27Peter Shulton
00:18:29number 20 Abdu
00:18:30that's another name that he uses
00:18:32but he's known as El Kass
00:18:34and for sure
00:18:41a game's played over 90 minutes
00:18:43and England have got to exert a lot of patience
00:18:45and certainly not make any mistakes at the back
00:18:47but at the moment they are not
00:18:49I'm sure for all England fans watching
00:18:51playing with
00:18:52positive aggression that is needed on this particular night
00:18:56yes for the header
00:19:06Barnes right back there
00:19:08back again to Shulton
00:19:11McMahon
00:19:18certainly something's got to be done also
00:19:22to ginger up those midfield areas
00:19:23Gascoigne has
00:19:26scarcely had a touch
00:19:27there he is
00:19:27the ball goes over his head though
00:19:29McMahon hasn't really got into his stride yet
00:19:31and Barnes
00:19:35is a long way from getting into his
00:19:37I think it's warming up
00:19:49for the sake of warming up
00:19:49I can't imagine that
00:19:50Robbie Robson with 20 minutes gone
00:19:52is contemplating
00:19:53any substitutions yet
00:19:55Yakan wins it in the air
00:20:04so too does El Hamid
00:20:07Parker trying to go in and
00:20:08get things moving in that area
00:20:10just outside the Egyptian penalty area
00:20:12but a free kick given to the Egyptians
00:20:14by the Swiss referee
00:20:19a few referees we've seen in this World Cup
00:20:28with a smile on his face
00:20:30but the moment nothing much for England to smile about
00:20:37still nil-nil
00:20:38with 20 minutes
00:20:40of this game gone
00:20:42well undoubtedly this is England's most important game
00:20:49since they've played I would think Argentina in Mexico
00:20:51but the way they're playing at the moment
00:20:53you would never think it was a World Cup game
00:20:54the first 20 minutes resembles a friendly game
00:20:57Abdel Ghani
00:20:59now there's at last the first sign
00:21:01that Steve McMahon trying to get to grips
00:21:03whether he's had a lashing from the bench
00:21:06I don't know
00:21:06but that was a bit more like
00:21:08the McMahon that Anfield knows
00:21:10and now Gascoigne
00:21:17so maybe the word has come from the bench
00:21:19because there's a new lease of life in Paul Gascoigne
00:21:22and there's McMahon again going in
00:21:24and England's ball
00:21:27Egyptians quite simply have got to be shaken out of this
00:21:33very leisurely negative stride of this
00:21:36but here's Abdel Ghani
00:21:37long ball forward
00:21:40just the one man up
00:21:41Hassan Hassan
00:21:43and maybe there was a push in the back by Walker
00:21:48and clearly there's not got to be any contact by these central defenders
00:21:54I must say at the same time that Hassan
00:21:55you breathe on him and he goes down
00:21:57so there's the foul
00:22:07alleged
00:22:09it's a free kick to Egypt
00:22:13Ibrahim Hassan the number two
00:22:22steps over it
00:22:27right again
00:22:30good and strong in the air
00:22:31let's see if we can get a run going from Wardle
00:22:33no
00:22:34Yakan
00:22:39Parker
00:22:41nicely chested down
00:22:43but the pass is way off Steve Ball
00:22:46and here Anzi venturing forward
00:22:49El Kass
00:22:51Yasen
00:22:52up goes right
00:23:00and he's got the touch on that one
00:23:03Walker
00:23:04turning
00:23:05finding right
00:23:06gets it back to Shilton
00:23:07halfway through the first half
00:23:10the Egyptian navy
00:23:12not dissatisfied with it so far
00:23:14and England with no reason for any joy in their hearts at the moment
00:23:19still nil-nil
00:23:20and little sign of causing the Egyptian defence any real trouble
00:23:25now Barnes on a run
00:23:27until he was stopped by Youssef
00:23:30Pierce with a throw
00:23:33Walker
00:23:39a long way back
00:23:41Barnes
00:23:57head towards Bull
00:23:58but the long balls towards him
00:24:05coming in from quite the wrong angles
00:24:06thank this task for the two men up front at the moment Trevor
00:24:13yes the service is not good
00:24:16but I think that they've got to get players nearer to them to support them
00:24:19they've got four players there in midfield
00:24:21and Leon gets you playing as midfield players
00:24:23they've got to get someone closer to them
00:24:24El Kass
00:24:28right
00:24:29flattering into him
00:24:30and the first sign of any bodily contact
00:24:34the referee blows the whistle
00:24:37and the worrying aspect of it from England's point of view is that
00:24:45as you saw against Holland
00:24:47they created certainly plenty of good chances
00:24:49sadly couldn't take them
00:24:51tonight they're a long way
00:24:53from creating even one solitary chance
00:24:55with 25 minutes of the game gone
00:24:57Walker going up for this one
00:25:11winning it in the air
00:25:12support here from Paul Parker
00:25:13and Waddle
00:25:15up to Lineker
00:25:16Lineker being closely followed though by Hassan
00:25:19Hassan
00:25:22Ibrahim Hassan
00:25:32Egypt making the running here
00:25:35Youssef on the far side
00:25:36and in the end Gascoigne gets in there
00:25:40and it was a despairing clearance by the England midfield player
00:25:44well they certainly need someone to inject some sort of life into this team
00:25:49because without the captain Brian Robson
00:25:51without vice captain Terry Butcher
00:25:52the team is lacking definitely some leadership there
00:25:55well here's Egypt's leader El Hamid
00:26:01their captain
00:26:02and the Egyptians get a throw
00:26:05to Youssef
00:26:21who looks so comfortable on the ball
00:26:26and he's got a nice little ball played in there
00:26:28towards El Hamid
00:26:30the number 10
00:26:30and there were some real worrying moments there for England
00:26:35as they hoisted in a really good ball for El Hamid
00:26:39Youssef really a man to watch
00:26:42good crosser of the ball is Ibrahim Hassan
00:26:44and El Hamid got above the England defenders
00:26:48well it was a good cross
00:26:52and El Hamid got the header in there
00:26:53he got in between Walker and Parker
00:26:56and if it was a better header
00:26:57he could have been in trouble
00:26:59Benica
00:27:01towards Bull
00:27:03getting support from Gascoigne
00:27:06but getting in each other's way
00:27:07Bull again
00:27:08El Cass
00:27:14to Yassin
00:27:15McMahon is tracking him
00:27:20Parker going in for the challenge
00:27:22and Yassin going on
00:27:23until White comes in
00:27:24and makes the challenge
00:27:26that really counted
00:27:27but that was a 40 to 50 yard run
00:27:30by the fullback
00:27:31and we'll detect a note of concern
00:27:38in Peter Shulkin's face
00:27:40Benica
00:27:51and Ramsey back to Shulkin
00:27:55whilst on the subject of leadership
00:27:59I personally wouldn't have a goalkeeper as captain
00:28:02I think that Bobby Robson today
00:28:04he's tried everything possible now with John Barnes
00:28:07he is an enigma
00:28:08he's so good for Liverpool
00:28:09yet he's still to fulfill his potential for England
00:28:12I would have made him team captain today
00:28:14just to try and inject a little bit of life into him
00:28:16here's Yassin who's injecting some life into the Egyptian attack
00:28:19until Walker got a really important challenge in
00:28:22and now releases Gascoigne
00:28:24he's got Bull on one side
00:28:26Lineker on the other
00:28:27and it came to nothing
00:28:29because Ramsey chose his moment well
00:28:32ball out of play
00:28:37it's an interesting thought about John Barnes
00:28:44I must say
00:28:44I mean he's looking
00:28:45a real pale shadow again
00:28:47in an England shirt
00:28:48unrecognisable from the red of Liverpool
00:28:50yes undoubtedly
00:28:52John Barnes has been the greatest talent
00:28:53that I've seen in English football
00:28:54for many years
00:28:55but to see him playing like this
00:28:57is such a disappointment to everyone
00:28:58I would make him captain
00:28:59and say
00:29:00there are John
00:29:00there's your responsibility
00:29:01you're an important man
00:29:03take the team out
00:29:04yes it'll be a Parker throw
00:29:34he's looking just a little concerned
00:29:39as well he might
00:29:40but here is Barnes
00:29:41foul given
00:29:47that's how it stands
00:30:01with 30 minutes
00:30:02of this
00:30:02vital game gone
00:30:04Gassain
00:30:09with the long free clip
00:30:10to the head
00:30:11of Stuart Pearce
00:30:12Barnes again
00:30:13a delicate little touch
00:30:14there for Gascoigne
00:30:15Barnes
00:30:25now Pearce
00:30:28getting in
00:30:29Ramsey's first mistake
00:30:31is it
00:30:31can Lineker
00:30:32make him pay for it
00:30:34Bull trying to get in there
00:30:35England claiming a handball
00:30:36Bull again
00:30:37but it's gone wide
00:30:38well for a moment
00:30:44it looked as though
00:30:44it might fall nicely
00:30:46for Lineker
00:30:46and Bull
00:30:47strove
00:30:48might and main
00:30:49to make it fall for him
00:30:50and another Egyptian
00:30:52and another Egyptian's gone down
00:30:52there'll be another delay
00:30:53and the referee looking at his watch
00:30:55I hope he's going to add on time
00:30:56what about this Trevor?
00:30:59well that's England's first chance of the game
00:31:01and it wasn't through a chance that was created by a good play
00:31:03it resulted from bad play by Ramsey
00:31:06he should have cleared the ball here
00:31:08doesn't get his clearance away
00:31:10ball gets the shot in but it goes well wide
00:31:12and Hanni Ramsey
00:31:41young defender
00:31:44still
00:31:44writhing in some pain
00:31:46that's wild
00:31:49it doesn't get his face
00:31:53yeah
00:31:54he can see
00:31:55thank you
00:31:56he can see
00:31:57george
00:31:58he can see
00:31:58me
00:31:59he can see
00:31:59he can see
00:32:01he can see
00:32:03yeah
00:32:03might
00:32:04come see
00:32:05that we can see
00:32:06early
00:32:07we can see
00:32:08now
00:32:09he can see
00:32:10while
00:32:11he
00:32:14well
00:32:14good
00:32:15well
00:32:15good
00:35:46Knock it out towards his Liverpool teammate, John Barnes.
00:35:49At the second attempt, he gets it out to Pearce.
00:35:52Forward now to Lineker.
00:35:54Four ball by Lineker.
00:35:57Pearce chasing.
00:35:59There's going to be a free kick there.
00:36:00No, it's a goal kick.
00:36:06And a yellow card will go to Abdel El Ghani.
00:36:25For time-wasting.
00:36:37Well, something had to be done.
00:36:39They are taking their time over every possible thing.
00:36:42It'll be interesting to see just how much time is played in this game.
00:36:46Because the Italian television people do, in fact, show the actual playing time at the end of 90 minutes.
00:36:56And at the instancy also, how much the Swiss referee will add to the end of this first 45 minutes.
00:37:05It's Ibrahim Hussain with the free kick.
00:37:13Short to Yusek.
00:37:18Waddle making his intervention.
00:37:20Lineker chasing Yakan, but Yakan gets it back to Shubir.
00:37:23Jack Charlton was very vocal in his condemnation of Egypt's tactics on Sunday.
00:37:41They really came to this World Cup not really wanting to play in any sort of enterprising way.
00:37:47And Trevor suggesting that they might even be looking for a goallist draw here just to get in the lottery at the end of it all.
00:38:01Well, here's Parker for England.
00:38:03And it's really up to England to make sure that that doesn't happen, that England get through on that.
00:38:07Here's Gascoigne.
00:38:09To the byline.
00:38:10And England get a corner.
00:38:14Has he given a goal kick?
00:38:15It looked a corner to me, but referee and linesmen are in accord.
00:38:23But the one encouraging thing is, here's the first time that Gascoigne, a midfield player, that looked like a corner to me.
00:38:30Yes, it was quite clearly a corner, but the most positive run we've seen yet from an England player.
00:38:35Having gone past the wide player on the touchline, I thought he might have got the cross in, but at least he was positive.
00:38:41Bright spring, up towards Bull, battling away there.
00:38:45Parker's gone forward, taking the ball from Waddle.
00:38:49Now this is a slightly more enterprising look by England, and a free kick's been given against them.
00:38:53It's easy for you at home and for us in the commentary box to lose patience with the referee, but it's so important that the England players don't.
00:39:05But here we do seem to have a referee who wants to take every bit of bodily contact out of the game.
00:39:11The reason why I felt at the start of the game that the Egyptians may play for a 0-0 draw in trying to go into this draw tonight was the reaction, I remember, after the opening two games.
00:39:26When they got the draws in the opening games, it was like as if they'd just won the World Cup final.
00:39:30Here comes Egypt with El Kass.
00:39:42Now Gascoigne, a bit of pace, maybe Youssef is coming across to confront him.
00:39:47He finds Steve McMahon, and on the left-hand side is John Barnes.
00:39:49Now wouldn't it be great to see Barnes go down that touchline and get to the byline, but Pearce is going to do it for him at any rate.
00:39:58Still with Barnes, that's a free kick to England.
00:40:10And Hanni Ramsey is back on the field again for Egypt, they're back to full strength.
00:40:19Gascoigne and Pearce over this free kick.
00:40:26Barnes, Lineker, right, full, are in there too.
00:40:30For England.
00:40:33On the edge of the penalty area.
00:40:37Gascoigne's free kick, loaded in there.
00:40:40But Ramsey got the header in.
00:40:43Pearce again, bringing them onto that left foot until Youssef got in there and made it difficult for him, but still with Lineker.
00:40:48And now with Gascoigne dribbling past one and past another, still with Gascoigne, pulls it back, and it goes behind for another corner.
00:40:57That's twice in the last two minutes that Gascoigne has raised English hopes with those mazy little dribbles of his getting to the byline.
00:41:05And as yet is unable to find that finishing touch.
00:41:09England fans have found their voices at any rate as Gascoigne now takes another corner.
00:41:13A wider one this time towards Steve Bull.
00:41:17Can Wright keep the ball in play?
00:41:20Yes, he can just find Steve McMahon.
00:41:24And now for Paul Parker.
00:41:25Crossed in once more again on the far side.
00:41:28Is Gascoigne again?
00:41:32Beats two.
00:41:33Beats three.
00:41:34Beats four.
00:41:35Finds Waddle.
00:41:35He beats one, but he runs in to Elhamid.
00:41:44Abdel Ghani.
00:41:48But with three minutes to go to half-time, the signs gradually are just a little more encouraging.
00:41:54Yes, that was good play by Gascoigne, working his way into the box.
00:41:57He's got such tight control there.
00:41:59He's got to do it inside the penalty box, because there's always the possibility of someone pulling him down.
00:42:03He is so dangerous.
00:42:04I would put Gascoigne alongside the likes of Banjo, Butogeno, I think Maradona in those situations when he kicks the ball so tight to his feet.
00:42:13Barnes back there with a header.
00:42:15Wright's just making it to Walker.
00:42:17Back to Shilton.
00:42:19Back to Walker.
00:42:28Ball to Waddle.
00:42:34Trying to get the ball through to Barnes.
00:42:36It very nearly made it.
00:42:37It's Elhamid now for Egypt with Ibrahim Hassan.
00:42:42Showing a lot of pace down that right flank.
00:42:46Waddle getting it away.
00:42:49Abdul Ghani pushing a nice little header here.
00:42:59Hassan, Abdul Ghani.
00:43:04And Shilton.
00:43:06Abdul Ghani hitting from something like 40 yards.
00:43:09And Shilton right at the end being forced to push that one away for the corner.
00:43:18Great strike this one.
00:43:20And that would have just crept in possibly.
00:43:21So the Egyptians get their corner.
00:43:26They're taking long enough in taking it with about a minute and a half to go to half time.
00:43:35Wright watching Elhamid.
00:43:37He's already shown he's a useful header of the ball.
00:43:41Ramsey playing the ball in.
00:43:44Robert trying to get it away.
00:43:45Benicke's gone racing up front.
00:43:56Just looking at Ramsey in the back there for the Egyptians.
00:43:58He's obviously a very, very influential player for them.
00:44:00But he's no more than 50% fit.
00:44:03There's like a minute to go for half time.
00:44:04I'd be very surprised if he comes out for the second half.
00:44:06Here's McMahon for England.
00:44:11Now Wobble.
00:44:13Parker.
00:44:18Gascoigne.
00:44:19Parker.
00:44:21Getting it through to Lineker.
00:44:22Just come off the defender a little bit.
00:44:24Pulled Parker in there.
00:44:25Parker's shot.
00:44:26Well saved.
00:44:27Corner for England.
00:44:28Which Horvall will take.
00:44:38Again the big men are forward in there.
00:44:40Mark Wright.
00:44:41Stuart Pearce has come in as well.
00:44:44Barnes at the near post.
00:44:46Benicke in there lurking in the six yard area.
00:44:49Loral now curling it in towards that Egyptian goal.
00:44:52The flick on by John Barnes.
00:44:53It's gone over the top.
00:44:54That was certainly good play by Paul Parker.
00:45:02Played the ball into Gary Lineker.
00:45:03Went for the one-two.
00:45:04Continued his run.
00:45:06Got a good shot in a goal.
00:45:07That was a good positive attitude.
00:45:08What was disappointing was the corner.
00:45:10We are so good at set pieces.
00:45:11Especially corners.
00:45:13But that was a complete waste.
00:45:19There's right.
00:45:20Here's Waddle.
00:45:26That's England's throw.
00:45:30Referee's played just 45 seconds so far of time added on.
00:45:37You trust there's a good bit more of that.
00:45:39Because there's been an awful lot of time wasting and injuries.
00:45:42Gascoigne tries a very ambitious ball towards Pearce on the far side.
00:45:46But it comes through the barns.
00:45:47Down he goes.
00:45:48That's a free kick.
00:45:50And looking in a certain amount of discomfort as well.
00:45:56Frustration there from Gascoigne.
00:45:59Pointing somebody.
00:46:00Paul Parker having to look where he's playing the ball.
00:46:03And you can see the animation on the England faces suggesting there's a concern there as well.
00:46:09The foul by Hassan on Barnes.
00:46:12Trevor Francis.
00:46:13Yeah, we saw in the picture there that the moment that John Barnes collected that ball, we could see three players actually there came in on John Barnes.
00:46:20There were four, just one outside the picture.
00:46:22They realised that John Barnes is the danger.
00:46:24But I think that John Barnes collecting balls in those areas, he must be 40 yards from goal.
00:46:29He's not a danger there.
00:46:30He has to collect them nearer to the goal to cause problems.
00:46:32The incident again, the three players around him, and one just out of the picture.
00:46:40But Barnes is okay to go on.
00:46:42Here's behind this, Gascoigne also.
00:46:57Referee looking at the watch.
00:47:00Gascoigne's free kick.
00:47:02Knocked in by Wright.
00:47:03Knocked away by Yacan.
00:47:06McMahon in there again.
00:47:07Now Wright in an unaccustomed position on that far touchline.
00:47:13Gascoigne playing it into Barnes.
00:47:15Barnes getting it away, and Ramsey with the headed clearance.
00:47:21Barnes again putting it into that danger area.
00:47:24No, he puts it to Pearce.
00:47:27That's a corner for England, right on half-time.
00:47:29The referee's already played, nearly three minutes of time added on.
00:47:32Can England snatch something now in the last seconds of this first half?
00:47:38Their form has improved in the last ten minutes or so.
00:47:41Though that doesn't say an awful lot, because the first 30 minutes was absolutely dreadful,
00:47:45where they were so negative themselves.
00:47:47Gascoigne floating it in there.
00:47:49Shubir forced to punch it away, not very accurately.
00:47:51Right with the header.
00:47:52And in the end, the Egyptians take possession, and Hassan gets it forward.
00:47:58Only Walker is up there, though.
00:48:00And now Parker, returning it once more, towards John Barnes.
00:48:04Knocked down for Pearce.
00:48:06Played in again towards Gascoigne, who's gone in there.
00:48:08Bulls in there as well.
00:48:11Just look at the red shirts in that box.
00:48:13Eight of them at least, and only Hassan is forward for Egypt.
00:48:21And the half-time whistle.
00:48:24So England are still looking for that vital breakthrough.
00:48:28A half-time score then here in Cagary.
00:48:31England nil, Egypt nil.
00:48:33A lot more aggression and positive attitude from his players in this second half against Egypt.
00:48:43Nil-nil here still.
00:48:47Steve Ball.
00:48:48Actually, Bobby, when you look at him, he always looks to seem as if he is a worried man.
00:48:56But the first two games against the Republic of Ireland against Holland, he looks so relaxed.
00:49:01But really, at this stage of this game, he must be a very worried man.
00:49:03Well, here's a free kick to Egypt.
00:49:08Right, the first to appear with a good, powerful header up to Gary Lineker.
00:49:14Barnes.
00:49:16Pearce.
00:49:17Played again towards Lineker.
00:49:18Of course, had this toe injury, playing with an injection.
00:49:23Which has made it virtually, I gather, almost a frozen toe.
00:49:26And he hasn't really, to be fair, looked quite as lively in this game as he had in the previous two.
00:49:33But a free kick here for England.
00:49:36They're taking from the right spot.
00:49:39Stuart Pearce now with it for England.
00:49:41Looking it forward, but putting it straight to Hassan.
00:49:46Barnes with a header.
00:49:48In goes Lineker.
00:49:49And again.
00:49:52In goes McMahon.
00:49:54And catches Youssef.
00:49:56On the back there.
00:49:58And it will be a free kick again to Egypt.
00:50:00There's an awful lot of stopping and starting with this referee, though, Trevor.
00:50:05Yes, and I don't think the Egyptians are really helping.
00:50:07Because they're trying to make it as awkward as possible for him.
00:50:10Keep stopping and starting the suits, then.
00:50:14Here's Abdul Ghani with the free kick.
00:50:19The one thing they don't want is the game to flow.
00:50:21Whilst it's stopping for free kicks, corners, injury problems.
00:50:25It suits them down to the ground.
00:50:28They've got their mind on one thing.
00:50:30That's a nil-nil draw.
00:50:32And then to take their luck, possibly in a draw.
00:50:36Of course, everything depending on the result also of the other game being played tonight
00:50:40between the Republic of Ireland and Poland in Palermo.
00:50:42But here's Ibrahim Hussain.
00:50:45And taking too long to get that throw in.
00:50:48Well done, referee.
00:50:49That's another yellow card for time-wasting.
00:50:52The second of this match.
00:50:55Abdul Ghani previously had one.
00:50:57The goalkeeper had one in the previous game.
00:50:59That's a good long throw, though.
00:51:01Mordel hooking it away.
00:51:03Up to Lineker.
00:51:03Lineker couldn't gather, though.
00:51:06And a free kick.
00:51:07Which way this time?
00:51:08To Egypt.
00:51:16It's pretty somebody's not doing a statistic of the number of free kicks.
00:51:19This will break all records, I would think.
00:51:21And it really hasn't been in any way an unpleasant game.
00:51:24Little Ghani hit Gascoigne.
00:51:33Youssef playing it wide.
00:51:39Up goes Schiltern.
00:51:40Uses his fist.
00:51:41Takes no chances with that one.
00:51:42Knocked back in again.
00:51:43Walker there for England.
00:51:44And Parker.
00:51:45Number 13 is Ahmed Ramsey.
00:52:05Piers.
00:52:06To right.
00:52:10And back to Shiltern.
00:52:11Gas.
00:52:24El Hamid.
00:52:31Comes through again to Peter Shiltern.
00:52:32Really getting a nice number of free kicks.
00:52:44I wonder what that was for.
00:52:48Well, it's from England's way.
00:52:49McMahon leaving it for Paul Parker.
00:52:58That's right.
00:52:59That's right.
00:53:02Now, Barnes and Pearce getting in each other's way.
00:53:07Putting each other off.
00:53:08The ball goes mainly into touch.
00:53:11It's Egypt's throw.
00:53:12It's Ibrahim Hassan.
00:53:14Up to Youssef.
00:53:16Stopped by McMahon.
00:53:18Throw again to Egypt.
00:53:25Right.
00:53:26Another throw to Egypt.
00:53:27It's Ibrahim Hassan.
00:53:39Who's already shown that he possesses a good, respectable long throw.
00:53:43Pierce getting it away.
00:53:44Barnes hooking it back into play.
00:53:48It's Ibrahim Hassan.
00:53:49Pierce for England.
00:53:50Chip forward towards Steve Ball.
00:53:53Shove in the back from Yakan.
00:53:55England substitutes tonight.
00:53:58Incidentally, Neil Webb, Terry Butcher, Peter Beardsley, Chris Woods, and David Platt.
00:54:05Gascoigne.
00:54:09Towards Waddle on the far side.
00:54:11Another England throw.
00:54:12Parker wanting to take it quickly.
00:54:16Here's McMahon.
00:54:17To right.
00:54:25Quickening things up a little bit through those defensive areas.
00:54:28Just managing to get the ball through to Paul Parker.
00:54:30There's the cross coming in towards Steve Ball.
00:54:33McMahon now pantsing on this half clearance.
00:54:35Pierce turning it in once more there.
00:54:37Gascoigne going towards this one.
00:54:39Shabir.
00:54:39Quite comfortable in the air.
00:54:42Got an excellent pair of hands, this goalkeeper.
00:54:4528 years old and over 60 caps for his country.
00:54:51Walker's header.
00:54:54Youssef.
00:54:55Now he can be dangerous.
00:54:57Hassan.
00:54:59Played back again.
00:55:01Comes to Abdel Ghani.
00:55:05El-Kass.
00:55:09Hassan.
00:55:15Pierce tracking his man there.
00:55:18And lucky not to have conceded a free kick, actually.
00:55:19Now Waddle.
00:55:23Finding Lineker.
00:55:25Bull is up ahead.
00:55:27Lineker.
00:55:28Finding Waddle.
00:55:29Getting the cross in now.
00:55:31And well, Bull was almost there.
00:55:36And obviously collided with goalkeeper Shabir.
00:55:42But a much more promising move from England.
00:55:45A little bit of flowing movement about that one.
00:55:48Lineker and Waddle.
00:55:49All the fine moves, of course.
00:55:51Lineker holding it up.
00:55:52Sensing that Waddle was making his run.
00:55:54Waddle whipping in his cross.
00:55:56And Bull just unable to finish it off.
00:55:58And hurting that left leg as he did so.
00:56:04Goes right.
00:56:06Youssef.
00:56:06Turning it to Abdel Ghani.
00:56:09Offside against Hassan.
00:56:12And that was certainly a good play by England.
00:56:13Lineker held it up well.
00:56:15Waddle on the overlap.
00:56:16Good ball into the near post.
00:56:17Bowe unfortunately there.
00:56:18Got his first to the ball but just couldn't direct it into the goal.
00:56:22But I was pleased to see Waddle operating on the left-hand position there.
00:56:25When he's on the right, he's too restricted.
00:56:27More movement from him.
00:56:28More flexibility.
00:56:29And you'll see the best of Waddle.
00:56:30Here's Parker.
00:56:33Got past one.
00:56:34Can he get past another?
00:56:35He's done very well, Paul Parker.
00:56:37Now what about a cross?
00:56:37Lineker can't quite get there.
00:56:40Also what I noticed, Trevor, is that Walker made a good run from defence there.
00:56:45And Mark Wright just before him.
00:56:47Whether Bobby Robson has said, I want the defenders now to push up quickly and add a bit of pace to it.
00:56:52Instead of just hitting hopeful long balls forward.
00:56:56Well, it's so important that you get players from the back playing.
00:56:59We saw how important it was for the Germans with Bremer.
00:57:01Because without Bremer against, I think it was Colombia, the West Germans looked a very average team.
00:57:06Free kick to England.
00:57:07Chris Waddle with it.
00:57:08The penalty area is packed.
00:57:11Mark Wright is in there.
00:57:12Steve Bull is in there.
00:57:13John Barnes is in there.
00:57:14Gary Lineker is in there.
00:57:15And it's Abdul Ghani who gets it away.
00:57:19Parker.
00:57:20Knowing that Walker's available behind him.
00:57:23Alongside him is Steve McMahon.
00:57:26Pierce away on the left.
00:57:28This is Steve Bull leaping for this one.
00:57:32Hassan getting it away.
00:57:33Up goes Mark Wright.
00:57:38Hassan Hassan.
00:57:41El Hamid.
00:57:42Now El Kass.
00:57:44Yussef's made a break.
00:57:46And a long range shot from El Kass.
00:57:49Clears the English crossbar.
00:57:56Once again, it was good build up play from the Injections.
00:57:59Playing short little passes there.
00:58:01They've never played any long balls at all.
00:58:02But the shot, well, from 40 yards.
00:58:04If you can beat Peter Schoen from there, you deserve to score.
00:58:08Yes, with the clearance for England.
00:58:13Ball making a run to try and get a mistake out of Annie Ramsey.
00:58:19It's a goal kick.
00:58:20Well, I'm surprised that Ramsey has come out for the second half because he's very ineffective at the moment.
00:58:30Limping very, very badly.
00:58:31And I would think it would be a good policy from England, though, if they could try and push Bulli Lineker away from the two markers and push on to this man.
00:58:38McMahon with the header, but nobody there, other than Yussef, to receive it.
00:58:48Abdel Ghani.
00:58:50El Hamid.
00:58:51Right tracking him.
00:58:55Yussef.
00:58:56Foul by Pearce.
00:59:07Another pre-kick to Egypt.
00:59:09Some ten minutes of the second half gone.
00:59:15Abdel Ghani with the pre-kick.
00:59:19Right with the header.
00:59:20Yussef.
00:59:22Here's Pearce.
00:59:22Goal kick!
00:59:32Hassan.
00:59:37And his identical twin brother at the other end of it.
00:59:40And a goal kick given.
00:59:44Just as well for commentators everywhere that the two Hassans play at the opposite end of the field.
00:59:5123-year-old brothers.
00:59:52And there's a man, 40 years of age, playing in his third World Cup final series.
01:00:02It's Mark Wright now for England.
01:00:05Click forward now to Steve McMahon.
01:00:11Wright.
01:00:12Barnes.
01:00:21Barnes.
01:00:25Bull.
01:00:27In goes McMahon again.
01:00:32Walker.
01:00:35Barnes.
01:00:36Walker.
01:00:36And he's taken a nasty little crack on the heel there as he was challenged by Ibrahim Hassan.
01:00:46And he's not a guy who claims injury.
01:00:51Chasing after this one.
01:00:52And then just catches the back of Des Walker's left leg.
01:00:56And with Walker off the pitch, England down to ten men as the game will go on with his free kick being taken by Paul Gascoigne.
01:01:05Well, Terry Butcher, of course, is one of the subs.
01:01:13Took a knock, I remember, in the game against the Republic of Ireland in a clash with John Aldridge.
01:01:19Here's some of the situation.
01:01:20Gascoigne now moving the ball a yard in so that he can get to it.
01:01:28Curled in well there.
01:01:29And picked in well by Mark Wright.
01:01:37England go-aheads.
01:01:39The big defender.
01:01:41Nods in that free kick from Paul Gascoigne.
01:01:44And the breakthrough that England sorely needed at last comes, thanks to Wright.
01:01:52Trevor Francis.
01:01:54Well, you felt that if England were going to score, it was going to be for the set piece.
01:01:57The Egyptians are not the strongest at the back.
01:02:00The keeper comes for it there.
01:02:01Doesn't get there.
01:02:02He's badly at fault.
01:02:03And Mark Wright puts it away.
01:02:07And now is Wright doing a defending job at the other end.
01:02:10It might even have just flicked off finally a defender.
01:02:12But that was certainly Mark Wright's goal.
01:02:23What a time to score your first goal for England when it was so badly needed.
01:02:33Here's Gascoigne, whose free kick set the whole thing up.
01:02:36Now let's see what England can do now to set this place going.
01:02:40Here's Bull.
01:02:42Couldn't quite reach Lineker, but now it does.
01:02:45Barker willing to overlap again.
01:02:46Inside for Waddle.
01:02:55El Hamid.
01:02:56Abrol Downey.
01:02:58Waddle coming across to challenge him.
01:03:09It's put fresh life, it seems, into English legs.
01:03:12And Bobby Robson off the bench.
01:03:18Feeling a little more comfortable in himself, no doubt, now.
01:03:21And certainly that goes for the England fans.
01:03:24And Des Walker, back on the field, thankfully moving quite freely.
01:03:34Abrol Ghani.
01:03:35Long range shots.
01:03:37That might have flicked off the defender.
01:03:38Now it flicked off an Egyptian forward.
01:03:41But he does love a dig from long range.
01:03:48Well that's just what England needed now.
01:03:49Because the Egyptians, they can't defend anymore.
01:03:51They've got to come out now and try and get the goal back.
01:03:54And of course Bobby Robson's got one or two options open to him now.
01:03:57He could possibly bring on another defender.
01:03:59Keeping it 1-0 now.
01:04:00I'm sure it would be a good policy like to bring Terry Butcher on, for example.
01:04:04And perhaps revert to the sweeper system again with Mark Wright sweeping.
01:04:09There's no sign of that at the moment.
01:04:11Oh yes, Butcher is in fact doing some warming up down below us, Trevor.
01:04:15But here's Lineker.
01:04:19Gascoigne.
01:04:24Gassin.
01:04:25And forced to retreat.
01:04:27Well, they can waste as much time as they want now.
01:04:29And they're not going to worry about that.
01:04:33The World Cup on TSN is brought to you by Molson Canadian.
01:04:40All right, you pick a stool?
01:04:42He says, yeah, I pick a big stool.
01:04:45He pulls out this big pot and sits it up on the stool.
01:04:47I say, oh great.
01:04:48I start lighting a fire and look in there.
01:04:52Well, they will meet the Belgians.
01:04:55The team that finishes second go to Genoa, where they meet the Romanians.
01:04:58And the third in the group go to Milan for the daunting task of facing the West Germans.
01:05:04But that's straight knockout.
01:05:09Adrogami playing it in.
01:05:10McMahon getting it away quite comfortably up towards Bull, who's certainly done his share of chasing without a great deal of reward.
01:05:16Hassan Hassan.
01:05:21A little touch to you, sir.
01:05:24Played wide again there.
01:05:25Wright trying to cut it off.
01:05:26But it's coming again.
01:05:27Shilton will need to get for this one.
01:05:29And us.
01:05:29But you see, suddenly, children, Francis, now the Egyptians playing a more enterprising game look a much more attractive proposition.
01:05:38Yes, they do.
01:05:39And it obviously suits England also, because there's nothing worse than a defensive team.
01:05:44It's very, very difficult to break through.
01:05:46But England now are finding one or two more openings.
01:05:47You saw earlier John Barnes playing a good ball through for Pearce.
01:05:51These are the sort of movements we need.
01:05:53And it's obviously much easier when the opposition are trying to come forward.
01:05:58Gascoigne.
01:06:01Pearce.
01:06:09Hassan.
01:06:11To his brother.
01:06:13Now Shilton needs to get there and just manages it.
01:06:17Fraction before Elcas.
01:06:18Brian, I can't help but think, with now Egypt pushing forward, it's a good time to bring on the sweeper system.
01:06:25Well, they're looking ever more dangerous.
01:06:28This is El Hamid.
01:06:30A little touch through again.
01:06:33And that time, Ahmed Ramsey not getting enough power on the shot.
01:06:39And no problems there for Peter Shilton.
01:06:40Well, Gascoigne, some pace now, as he sprints from the midfield.
01:06:54He's gone round one, he's gone round another one.
01:06:57No, he's brought down, but maybe that was a little optimistic to expect that the referee would give anything there.
01:07:03But at least he's given a throw to England, which Stuart Pearce will take.
01:07:10Certainly power and pace in Gascoigne's run.
01:07:12And just for one glorious moment, it looks as though he might have got clear of the last man.
01:07:17It's with Barnes.
01:07:19And now with Pearce.
01:07:20He's coming in towards Lineker.
01:07:23He lost the ball for a fraction of a second.
01:07:26But his chip there is beyond the byline.
01:07:30It's a goal kick.
01:07:3814 minutes of the second half have gone when Mark Wright put England 1-0 into the lead.
01:07:43A little chip forward towards Hassan.
01:07:58Right there with a touch.
01:08:00Well, it's hard to see what Walker could have done.
01:08:03He was trying, it seemed to me, fairly to get that ball.
01:08:08The referee's given a free kick to the Egyptians.
01:08:10Abdul Ghani will take it.
01:08:14And we know that he can strike halfway from some distance.
01:08:18He must hope the wall is securely lined up.
01:08:27Abdul Ghani ordering the full-back to go wide.
01:08:31Steve McMarlane's read it well for England.
01:08:33They did four for Waddle.
01:08:35And now Waddle on the chase with Bull waiting in the middle.
01:08:37Lineker up there as well.
01:08:38Barnes is getting forward too.
01:08:39Here's John Barnes now.
01:08:42Whipping in the cross.
01:08:44Shubir with a safe hand.
01:08:49But it's looking more a game of football now as Egypt having opened up a little bit leaves gaps for England to exploit.
01:08:57There's no doubt about it with the skill these Egyptians have.
01:09:00England must remain vigilant at the back.
01:09:06Abdul Ghani.
01:09:07Youssef.
01:09:14Hassan.
01:09:15Trying to play it in towards his brother.
01:09:17An overhead kick.
01:09:18And a goal kick for England.
01:09:21You get the feeling with the Egyptians that the first two games, they were just so pleased to be in this World Cup.
01:09:28They don't really believe in themselves.
01:09:30Now that they're having to come out, they're starting to play, they do look a good team.
01:09:35All going for this one.
01:09:41Walker going for it.
01:09:44There are.
01:09:52Busy run of his as he gets it back to Peter Shilton.
01:09:54The World Cup on TSN has brought
01:10:06comes to Gascoigne.
01:10:10Nice skills by him,
01:10:11but it doesn't quite release Lineker.
01:10:15But it's England's throw.
01:10:17And some anxious faces on the Egyptian bench.
01:10:20The manager, El Ghari, in front there.
01:10:23A former army colonel.
01:10:25Believes in discipline.
01:10:27Believes in skillful football as well.
01:10:33Gascoigne.
01:10:35Now, what can England do here?
01:10:37Nothing because the pass came to nothing.
01:10:39It's went to Ahmed Ramsey.
01:10:42Wright ducking in on the header.
01:10:45Pearce.
01:10:48To Barnes.
01:10:51Taken away by El Hamid.
01:10:53Androgani.
01:11:01And Wright puts it into touch.
01:11:03Well, we know that the number two,
01:11:05Ibrahim Hassan,
01:11:07has a good long throw.
01:11:09But he's not going to use it at the moment
01:11:12because it's Youssef who will take it.
01:11:17Just get the feeling,
01:11:18England are down to a wood yet by a long way.
01:11:20Leading 1-0.
01:11:25The Egyptians can look very dangerous.
01:11:28Abelgani.
01:11:29Oh, and a great save by Schiltern.
01:11:36Well, Hassan is furious with that,
01:11:39but it was a splendid save by Schiltern
01:11:42and proving the point that England are by no means out of the wood.
01:11:46Trevor.
01:11:46Well, they're complaining there
01:11:48because they felt it was a handball.
01:11:51And if we just see the action here.
01:11:56Is this where it is?
01:11:59There against Mark Wright.
01:12:01But really, he should have scored there.
01:12:02There's a bad miss.
01:12:03The Egyptians now warming up to
01:12:07Solomon
01:12:09and
01:12:10Abdelrahman Adel.
01:12:21England were looking for a whistle there,
01:12:23but
01:12:24much rather than they were watching the ball
01:12:26and playing to that.
01:12:29Benica.
01:12:31Parker.
01:12:34Hany Ramsey.
01:12:36Bull trying to get between him and the goalkeeper.
01:12:38Ramsey was well aware of that.
01:12:40Right with the header.
01:12:41Hany Ramsey.
01:12:44Yakan.
01:12:46To Hassan.
01:12:47England leading by a goal to nil.
01:13:00Right.
01:13:01Not quite the header
01:13:02that we wanted.
01:13:03Pearce making a bit of ground,
01:13:05but
01:13:05comes to El Hamid.
01:13:09Now
01:13:10Hassan.
01:13:11Youssef.
01:13:17Came off Barnes.
01:13:20Knocked in again towards Mark Wright.
01:13:23Parker scuttling away on that far side.
01:13:26Rebindic going out of play.
01:13:27Gets it down the line,
01:13:29but
01:13:29only to Abdelgani.
01:13:32And the ball just out of play.
01:13:33It'll be an England throw.
01:13:34And now the Egyptians making their substitutions.
01:13:41Taking off the number 10,
01:13:43El Hamid,
01:13:44the captain.
01:13:45And number 20,
01:13:48El Kass.
01:13:49So number 19,
01:13:51Abdelrahman Adele goes on.
01:13:54And also the number 11,
01:13:56Saliman.
01:14:02England with
01:14:03Webb,
01:14:04Platt,
01:14:05and Butcher all warming up.
01:14:07But no sign as yet
01:14:08for the substitution being made by Bobby Robson.
01:14:17Bottle's header.
01:14:19Gascoigne's pass.
01:14:21Lineker's hustle.
01:14:22Bull waits.
01:14:23From the corner to England.
01:14:36Well,
01:14:36Lineker is amazed.
01:14:37I thought he'd given a corner.
01:14:38The linesman certainly pointed in that direction.
01:14:41The Swiss referee has overruled it
01:14:42and has given the goal kick.
01:14:52Yes.
01:14:52A little off balance for that header.
01:14:54Barnes.
01:14:57That's a free kick.
01:15:07The Swiss fussles in
01:15:09and places the ball
01:15:10for
01:15:10Stuart Pearce.
01:15:12Something that would have been
01:15:13the furthest
01:15:14possible thing
01:15:15from the minds of the Egyptians
01:15:16in the first half
01:15:17when they were wasting time
01:15:18at every opportunity.
01:15:20But they've got a goal kick
01:15:21here again.
01:15:21I think Bobby Robson's there
01:15:28shouting at
01:15:29poor Gascoigne
01:15:30because he's making
01:15:31so many runs forward
01:15:32into attacking areas
01:15:33and it's not necessary
01:15:34at this stage.
01:15:35We've got the 1-0 lead.
01:15:37We must try and secure it.
01:15:38There's no need to go forward.
01:15:41Barnes
01:15:42playing towards Gascoigne.
01:15:43Going forward again though.
01:15:44going forward again though.
01:15:50Straight to John Barnes
01:15:51that's another foul
01:15:53this time by
01:15:53Ibrahim Hassan
01:15:55another free kick to England.
01:16:00Stuart Pearce
01:16:01trying a blockbuster
01:16:02wobble is there as well
01:16:04or will it be a different than Gascoyne the Egyptians will have done their
01:16:12homework that's for sure just three in their wall
01:16:15Shabir of course behind them
01:16:22Gascoyne floated in there oh and it needed a save super free kick by Paul
01:16:29Gascoyne and it earns England a corner perfectly flighted that would have just
01:16:37crept in
01:16:40so England still leading by a goal to nil with a little over ten minutes of the
01:16:45game to go
01:16:53and it'll be a tense ten minutes for them
01:16:57Mark Wright very nearly got in there again
01:17:01Parker does well
01:17:03Wobble once more the cross coming in again
01:17:05Pierce lifting it Paul trying to get in there Shabir also Wright hitting the ball
01:17:10hitting it straight at the goalkeeper and needs now to get back and do some
01:17:13defending Barnes trying to hold off Yusef in goes McMahon does it well but a free
01:17:19kick's been awarded to the Egyptians
01:17:22they look a good side the Egyptians and there's some plenty of work get bringing
01:17:27these last few minutes
01:17:29Hassan
01:17:33Wright with the header
01:17:35had a storming game not only because of his goal
01:17:37fade on once more here's Shulkin
01:17:39they're a very good side to watch aren't they when they play in a positive way
01:17:43here's Stuart Pearce I'm talking about the Egyptians of course
01:17:45yes they do play some excellent football but I'm more concerned about England in this present moment we've got this 1-0 lead and it's so important for the nation that we keep this not only for the nation but for the competition because we do need a team of England's stature in the next round
01:18:03here's McMahon
01:18:09Gascoigne McMahon again
01:18:13Lineker coming off his man the short pass to Waddle played now for Barnes
01:18:18Lineker away on this left-hand side
01:18:22played in for Chris Waddle he might have a little run at somebody now but he flicks it wide for Barnes and I don't think Barnes will get there
01:18:31but it's quite nice to see Waddle run at somebody there the opportunity was there Trevor
01:18:37well I think in that situation there Brian all you have to do is try and keep possession
01:18:42the Egyptians with 10 minutes ago are obviously tired
01:18:44we've got the ability we've just got to keep knocking the ball around now and make the Egyptians run
01:18:48right again with the header
01:18:50and an offside against Hassan a free kick to England
01:18:54let it go let it go
01:18:56Peter Beardsley's coming on
01:18:58now that's the one permutation we didn't expect
01:19:03unless he's going to play sweeper
01:19:05unless he's going to play sweeper
01:19:15in the meantime it's Shelton with the close
01:19:17comes to McMahon short to Lineker
01:19:29maybe in place of Bull
01:19:31yes I would think so
01:19:32the only other possibility I suppose is Gary Lineker if his foot is causing problems
01:19:37but I would think that the most logical choice would be Steve Ball
01:19:40you need Gary Lineker over 10 minutes to go with his experience
01:19:42Yussef to Abdel Ghani
01:19:47Abdel Ghani
01:19:51played in again towards Hassan
01:19:53Walker winning it in the air
01:19:55Barnes helping out there
01:19:56but is he helping?
01:19:57but in the end he has to put it away into touch
01:19:59and now in fact it's Steve Ball who's coming off
01:20:01and busy little Beardsley who comes on
01:20:08not been in the best of form just lately
01:20:10but he's such a great little chaser of all sorts of causes
01:20:15and you just get a feeling that a fresh pair of legs might unsettle the Egyptians in these late stages
01:20:20England leading 1-0
01:20:23and time rapidly running out
01:20:25so important that England concede nothing at this end of the field
01:20:29good header by Pearce
01:20:31and here's Beardsley again trying to get in on the action
01:20:34and in fact it's an England throw
01:20:36Bonds
01:20:52Walker
01:20:56now it's an Egyptian throw
01:20:58One brother hands it to the other, it's Hassan, winding up another long throw, will there
01:21:05be problems here for England, there's a good long throw towards his brother, but the England
01:21:12defenders are there and concede the corner, marking has got to be tight, the defence has
01:21:25got to be secure now, as the Egyptians take this corner, it's a well taken one as well,
01:21:40Shilton didn't get there, but happily for England it went over the top, Afrogani was right in
01:21:48there with the header and the referee, you saw him stopping his stopwatch there to,
01:21:55add time on, Shilton in a bit of trouble, but he came for that one and didn't really get
01:22:04very close to it, to a trouble.
01:22:06No, it was a bit worrying there because he came like the Egyptian keeper did for the goal
01:22:10of Mark Wright and completely missed his punch, I think in a situation like this with just
01:22:15a few minutes left, they're going to start throwing high balls in, it's the perfect time
01:22:19to bring on Terry Butcher, I see David Platt is now warming up, it looks like he's going
01:22:23to be coming on, probably for someone like Paul Gasco in I presume, I agree with bringing
01:22:28an extra player on because obviously it's very very hot out there, but I certainly would've
01:22:32brought Terry Butcher on it this last few minutes.
01:22:40Well Peter Shilton will soon be ready to resume and I have no doubt that Bobby Robson will
01:22:47delay bringing on David Platt until he's absolutely sure that Shilton is okay, because of course
01:22:52Chris Woods is another of the England substitutes, the goalkeeper, does he point where he is, and
01:23:01I think Bobby Robson's, he's just got a thumbs up there from, from Gasco in to say, yeah, Shilton's
01:23:07okay, so we can make the substitution, the England taking off Chris Waddle, to bring on David Platt.
01:23:12Number eight comes in, and the number 17 goes out, so Waddle comes in, and that goes out of play.
01:23:24Inside the last five minutes now, and there'll be some time added on of course, just wish I
01:23:41didn't feel quite so nervous about England in defence now, because the Egyptians do look
01:23:45fully capable of causing a bit of an upset, when they do come forward, and here's Youssef, to Hassan, and it
01:23:56must have just nicked off the Egyptian, because it's a throw to England. Pierce with it, to Beardsley,
01:24:03who's not really had a touch since he came on his side.
01:24:06Foul by him, gives a free kick to Egypt.
01:24:10These really are tense minutes, with a lot hanging on this World Cup future for England.
01:24:19Abdul Ghani, canny character, floating that free kick in, right up again, superbly for England.
01:24:26Gascoigne getting it away. Lineker at the moment, just the lone man up front.
01:24:30Jaqan getting it away, very skillfully for the Egyptians, but here's Gascoigne, and maybe
01:24:34something will open up now. He's found Beardsley. Now Beardsley has just got Lineker up with
01:24:39him. Now, can Beardsley jink his way into a goal-scoring position here? No, he can't.
01:24:45As Ramsey was injured again in the clash with Peter Beardsley.
01:24:50And it'll be a free kick to the Egyptians.
01:24:59Well, despite his injury there, Ramsey did very, very well there, because he was faced with Beardsley.
01:25:03He didn't go to ground, he stood his ground. It was very, very effective.
01:25:08Oh, what's happening there? Hassan on Beardsley, that's going to be a card of some sort for Ibrahim Hassan and for Peter Beardsley.
01:25:17Now Beardsley getting all tangled up there with the pullback.
01:25:23Right, missed that one. That's about the first header tonight that he's missed.
01:25:38Up goes David Platt. Wins a good header for England.
01:25:42Played in again there. Wright wins that one well enough.
01:25:44Parker now with a chance to clear it way into that half of the field.
01:25:51And they get it back to Shabir.
01:25:53England holding on over these last few minutes to this one goal lead that'll take them into the second phase.
01:26:09Abdelgami.
01:26:14Trying to get it wide to Hussain.
01:26:16But Walker read that well enough even at the expense of a throw.
01:26:19Ibrahim Hassan chasing through the flower beds there and looking for a long, long throw.
01:26:27But right on the end of it again for England. What a storming match he's had.
01:26:32Not only that priceless goal, of course, and that's a goal kick.
01:26:38Yes, undoubtedly, Mark Wright has been the man of the match.
01:26:40He's been absolutely a tower of strength at the back with his heading power.
01:26:44And the one time he came forward, he got the all-important goal for England, which should see us through now to the last 16.
01:26:51Don't tempt Providence, Trevor.
01:26:54There's still time to go.
01:26:57Beardsley.
01:26:59Getting it from Barnes.
01:27:01Finding Pearce.
01:27:03England's turn now to play with a bit of caution.
01:27:05The ball goes in a touch.
01:27:14Offside against Hassan.
01:27:16Free kick to England.
01:27:18The crowd feel that that was the end of the game, but it isn't.
01:27:23It's a free kick to England, though.
01:27:24Stuart Pearce with a kick.
01:27:39Hit long towards Gary Lineker.
01:27:44Annie Ramsey.
01:27:46Policing Lineker.
01:27:48Lineker's quite happy to let a few seconds go by there.
01:27:51And in the end, the free kick's given to the Egyptians.
01:27:55They to Abdul Ghani.
01:27:59Beardsley coming back to challenge.
01:28:00To make life difficult for Abdul Ghani.
01:28:02Doing a bit more challenging now, but it's the red shirts that are coming forward in England in these last seconds still with some defending to be done.
01:28:16Can they stay secure?
01:28:18Parker killing that ball well.
01:28:21And then it's played back by David Black to Peter Shilton.
01:28:24The secure arms of Peter Shilton.
01:28:26Big scoreboard still shows England 1, Egypt 0.
01:28:33The last seconds of the game now.
01:28:37Oh, and a bad ball played in there.
01:28:40I think it was by Gary Lineker.
01:28:45Pearce.
01:28:47Gets it to...
01:28:49Right, and the ball played back and he hadn't seen the Egyptian behind him, but fortunately there was enough pace on his back pass to get it through to Shilton.
01:28:55The referee's looked at his watch.
01:29:01Up goes McMahon.
01:29:02Wins it in the air.
01:29:03Lineker after this one.
01:29:04Heads it towards Platt.
01:29:06Needed Platt to go in and win that one though.
01:29:09Need someone just to get this ball off the Egyptians once more as the referee again looks at his watch.
01:29:15It's played in there again.
01:29:17And England once again get it away.
01:29:19To Beardsley, but the final whistle is gone and England reached the second phase.
01:29:24No argument about that.
01:29:26No need for calculators.
01:29:28No need for lotteries.
01:29:30The goal by Mark Wright, his first for England, has ensured that Bobby Robson's men go marching on in this 1990 World Cup.
01:29:36Victors here by one goal to nil against Egypt.
01:29:42Brought to you...
01:29:43...
01:29:58...
