00:00Opening this movie with what could very easily be the start of the zombie apocalypse and then
00:09revealing that no it's just our normal world sans rage virus thankfully it's not like real real
00:14footage it's early to get all philosophy wins but like isn't this just what we all voluntarily do
00:20now watch uncut unending footage of all the worst things imaginable happening around the world
00:26we're going and we're taking your torture victims with us
00:28and it's an interesting move to have the very people who are trying to stop animals from being
00:32tortured end up being the initial cause of a bunch of human death the animals are contagious
00:37the infection is in their blood and saliva love how they get the zombie rules out of the way and
00:40set up the world so quickly he immediately knows what's up which makes you wonder why he allowed
00:48this whatever this experiment is to happen but we get it sometimes you gotta clockwork orange some chimps
00:53yeah if you're going from screaming in pain to raging out in under 20 seconds the world is
01:00cooked or at least england and come on a time jump card becomes the title beautiful full mmc manhood
01:07in less than six minutes has to be some kind of record i know that we know it's 28 days later but
01:11we're given so much visual exposition here and you probably don't even notice most of it he's naked so
01:15whatever happened happened fast no one had time to dress him in a gown they had just enough time to lock
01:19him in and slip a key under the door in case he woke up and his head has been shaved presumably
01:23for surgery but he's got at least a few weeks of growth back and ironically it gave him the
01:27flyest haircut we've ever seen seriously people were rocking this cut because of this movie okay
01:31so it might be right about now that you're saying to yourself self let me talk to lee and then you
01:35start saying to me so what's the deal broseph couldn't afford the hd version of dandy boyle's
01:39masterpiece and dear viewer i'm with you i said the same thing to myself and then to me because i
01:44couldn't believe it it does not match my memory of this movie but apparently this is it it was shot in
01:48480p on a potato well not a potato at the time a canon xl1 although 500 wasn't exactly professional
01:54grade anyway the canon xl1 has a real resolution of 512 by 492 and a virtual resolution of 750 by 492
02:02the image is just very low resolution high contrast and sharp into hell so there are halos around
02:06everything wait where have i heard that oh right it's from this no film school article from three
02:11years ago who took that exact line from this reddit post from four years ago anyway it's grainy it works
02:16for the vibe even the fox logo seems to suffer and that's the last we'll speak of it
02:21same brother same i don't think i've had more than five pepsis in the last five years but who
02:25oh boy you know how good that felt see the score starts so quietly you probably didn't even notice
02:31when it came in precisely but it adds to the eerie atmosphere as it slowly builds killian murphy is
02:36always a win why be coy about it the dude owns this scene and at no time do i ever consider that
02:40danny boyle and his daughter were off camera holding traffic back i'm fully immersed in jim's loneliness and
02:45empty london and the silence works so well here because our brains know that making a street
02:53look empty is possible but you can't stop a city from making all sound so it's unnerving and feels
02:58wrong fun fact or maybe let's just say fact they almost didn't get this shot in here because 9 11
03:03happened during filming but they were lucky enough to shoot this scene before the bus on its side is
03:07just a little too terroristy for london's comfort and i'm not going to talk about my favorite piece
03:16of music to come out of a movie ever yet but the vibes are there it's such a good jump scare because
03:26it's so much louder than everything else and that's exactly how it would feel after walking through a city
03:30of silence and as godspeed you black emperor finally starts going nuts with the finale we can
03:40feel that it's starting to settle in on jim that he really is alone and something bad happened walls of
03:44contact info for trying to find missing people are a very real thing in mass casualty events they base
03:49theirs on one from an earthquake in china dang it that feels so british even this written expletive
03:53graffiti is somehow drinking tea ah so that's where they all went the implication that they'd started
03:58dumping them in here jim went from the rapture must have happened to heaven's gate guy must have come
04:02to the uk hello oh that they were just in there and then the stairs introducing us to the way these
04:11rage zombies move with the vicar is pretty inspired priests are supposed to be who you tell your worst
04:15secrets to but instead he wants to bite your face also toby sedgwick the priest helped develop the
04:20movement of the zombies oh shouldn't have done that and the catholicism is strong in this boy goodness the
04:25debates this sparked fast zombies first return of the living dead had zombies running in 85 and
04:31second they aren't even zombies they never die but is this still a zombie movie you bet your sweet bippy
04:38the sound design for the zombie screams is so absolutely over the top listening to danny boyle
04:43talk about this 25 second explosion is great because he knew he wanted a full hollywood level fireball so
04:48they went all out i like to think this is a litmus test for if you're rage infected but really mark
05:03is just a weirdo which checks out they always survive well i mean for a bit and then i wake up today in
05:08hospital i wake up and i'm hallucinating or everything that builds up to this moment is part of what i love
05:15so much about this movie we see the very start of the outbreak and then we cut to jim's jimmy riddler
05:19and we're with him as everything starts going bananas so at no point do i question why he's so
05:24confused it was a virus infection even as selena dumps some exposition on us we're still learning
05:30things through the visuals like that processed food soda and candy is most of what would last 28 days after
05:35fresh food delivery stopped and they've clearly been living in this little space for a while you're the
05:39first uninfected person we've seen in six days and a quick little reminder to us that even though it seems
05:44like they've been doing this for a long time and a month in zombie time would feel like years but
05:48still it's only been 28 days it would be pretty brutal for the smell to hit you before the visual
05:52i don't ever really want to joke about suicide but i 100 get this decision in this situation
05:57imagine being able to make your final words to your son so poetic and beautiful but alex garland
06:02wrote it so that's a cheat and don't wake up goes really hard and lands home why they did what they
06:06did i looked down and i was standing on all these people like a carpet and mark describes the
06:13alternative it's so believable which is what makes it even more depressing and harrowing and danny never
06:18frames these shot reverse shots in any normal way making it all the more engaging is it still a jump
06:22scare if you literally see it coming why yes yes it is the sound alone made you pee a little not me
06:28you it's been a good 25 minutes since there's been any blood almost easy to forget what this movie is
06:33and this quick shot of mark trying to wipe something off screen a little hint that he's cooked
06:37of all the things i remember about this movie my brother-in-law telling me about this scene before
06:40i saw the movie is the main thing but for some reason i got it in my head that she was cutting
06:45his arm off to save him i was incorrect it's a perfect illustration of both the speed of the
06:50virus the resiliency it takes to survive and the state of mind selena is in she's warning jim about
06:55blood getting in his mouth while spraying infected blood everywhere not the actions of someone
07:00wholly concerned with their life and i think it's easy for us to get on board with zombies
07:03getting machete to pieces but seeing a guy who hasn't turned yet get hacked up is super brutal
07:08also it's just totally bananas that mark gave us this long speech to die five minutes later total
07:12shock to me still um yes then get them and get dressed we have to leave now jim's complete astonishment
07:20at how fast she acted and how unperturbed she seems really sells it as well i didn't know he was
07:25infected okay he knew i could see in his face great line and honestly super believable we all
07:30think we're way better at hiding our emotions than we are look if someone gets infected you've
07:34got between 10 and 20 seconds to kill them we knew it was quick but dang 10 seconds is nothing this shot
07:40of killian's beautiful beautiful eye is 16 seconds and just so you know where you stand if it happens
07:45to you i'll do in a heartbeat in a what now in a what now there are no zombies in wally but i can't
07:51believe i didn't notice this direct reference the first time i saw wally i knew something
07:54felt familiar also such a genius alert system and deterrent since shopping carts are the loudest
08:03things on planet earth outside tornado sirens and while they're not impossible to climb it's
08:07not an instinctual climb if you know what i mean you have to think about where you step or it just
08:11doesn't work got a headache well why didn't you say something before well because i didn't think
08:16it's a fair assessment of selena but what he fails to grasp yet is that while she doesn't necessarily
08:20care about jim keeping him alive is just good strategy because being alone is
08:24way worse almost like mutual aid doesn't have to be some altruistic endeavor but it's actually
08:28beneficial to me to make sure those around me are well off some kind of lesson in there but
08:32i refuse to engage with it beyond applying it to two people in a zombie apocalypse
08:37the fear in his voice is haunting so i'm frank anyway there are a number of people i'd be happy to
08:44stumble upon in the apocalypse but a giant teddy bear looking brendon gleason top of the list and i mean
08:49even after seeing him go full grizzly bear on the infected come on sweetheart say hello i'm kind
08:54of weird to hear gleason with a british accent originally jim was going to be english as well
08:57but boyal let him be his irish self last minute because he felt it helped the character seem like
09:01even more of an outsider reminds me of this gem also british no i'm irish oh yeah no no no oh sorry
09:08sorry the area of north europe no no no oh so this is your place it's nice and it works out for jim
09:19because i think he just wanted people he could be congenial with again
09:25most horrific moment of the film right because if they slowed you down i'd leave them behind
09:30in a heartbeat yeah what kind of beat hasn't rained in 10 days my la friends are laughing at that being a
09:35long time my las vegas friends are quietly sobbing and that's stuff about the answer to infection i
09:39mean there is no answer to infection selena may be an aggressive pragmatist but she's 100 correct
09:45you need us just the same as we need you we need each other hannah gets it community john murphy's
09:52rendition of ave maria really sells it just so you know i don't take checks or credit cards like really
09:58joking papa bear gleason what more could you ask for i'm sorry but he's an upgrade from your dead
10:02parents see this is a really idea you know why because it's really obviously idea even the first
10:08time through i knew jim was right i think we all knew jim was right some of the most disturbing
10:15screams came out of the infected in this film peak stress and changing a tire is stressful enough i
10:19can't imagine trying to line up the wheel studs with the holes in the tire while the car is wobbling
10:23in the air it's hard enough when it's stationary on a jack trying to find the right height and spin and
10:26angle yeah i'd be dead and just like drive on the rim you can throw the spare on after the nightmare
10:31tunnel the way that front zombie stops has always felt very human to me since it's just the human
10:36actor but having zombies realize they can't catch the car is fascinating feels like a cognitive leap
10:44classic zombie trope of full unfettered access to the goods fortunately they don't go full consumer
10:49and they do move on i credit the underrated band granddaddy
10:51hmmm irradiated frank's a homer simpson fan 16 year old tar before flavor warmer not aggressive
11:02two irish lads discussing free scotch's peak apocalypse joy even if this is the second time
11:07lagavulin 16 has come up in my videos it was lionel's drink of choice and glass onion still a bit camp
11:11fiery for me but i drink pretty much whatever frank recommended to me thankfully boyle didn't go full
11:16train spotting for this scene you know we wanted to although he did choose to have the first rage
11:22zombie that we hear speak clearly be a kid which might seem like a nothing revelation but the idea
11:26that their brains are still somewhat functional is a big difference to most zombie movies you don't
11:32often get shots like these in the apocalypse or these i was wrong when i said that staying alive is as
11:39good as it gets like i said about mark who wasn't long for this movie everyone feels so real i believe
11:43that turning off your desire for anything beyond survival might actually help you survive in the
11:47beginning you'll never get pulled down by sentiment but selena figures out that there's more by
11:51watching frank and hannah and ultimately after a certain point surviving to just survive wouldn't be
11:56worth it anymore sorry it's okay you can keep it the riz hey selena what is it
12:09where'd you go to sleep haha so funny she was well within her rights to plant that machete between
12:14his eyes and i wouldn't have blamed her oh great valium no i can't sleep come on frank let her live a
12:22little give her half of one again the guy who made train spotting is clearly holding himself back here
12:28it says a lot that jim's nightmares aren't about zombies but are about being left alone again
12:34thanks dad oof jim is spending the entire movie looking for a dad and the truth
12:38is that he needs to become one not literally but emotionally spiritually narratively
12:48that's clearly the doctor's voice christopher eccleson or who you most likely know him as
12:52destro or major west in this one which makes sense to tie the continuity all together but i also love
12:57that he'd be arrogant enough to think he was the only one who could record the message we all agreed
13:01in a recent video that this is a top 10 human experience amazing choice to only show their
13:05reactions and just hint at what they're seeing until we tilt up to manchester
13:08i don't like this i think we should go no you know where this is headed because you've seen
13:13the movie and you probably want to change it just like i do but it's so clear that frank's only
13:17concern is hannah and he knew there was no future for just the two of them back in london it's the uk's
13:22newest sensation the dodgy punters right this is their album cover i hate every single thing about
13:28this except this amazing camera angle from inside the blood droplet but it's like top 10 most bummed
13:33i've ever been watching a movie sophie's choice jim's choice sorry i lost my temper hannah
13:41i love you very much god i love this man he knows it's over and he again shows us what his only
13:46concern is remember how peter parker got dusted the slowest and the theory was that he was just so
13:50strong it took extra time to get him same goes for frank he loves so hard the rage had a harder
13:55time getting in brendan gleason has a menacing frame and would be a very formidable foe it's why the
14:00racists in the top hat had to stab him in the back to win and it's brutal but i'm thankful that it
14:04all happened so fast less than a minute from blood and eye to dead there's also this sense that they
14:08were just so close to salvation but the truth is that they probably weren't going to keep frank
14:12around for very long anyway there are probably other signs but this would be the first thing that
14:16would make me suspicious not exactly a well-disciplined crew yeah girl same killian yucky yuckers
14:23killian murphy no thank you the answer to infection yeah well as i said before it's here
14:32though it may not be quite what you imagined so sort of a roomie the cure for pain is in the pain
14:36kind of thing meet mailer you think mailer being chained up is a direct influence on the ending of
14:42shot of the dead especially given this line the virus was caused by rage infected monkeys have now been
14:47dismissed and eventually he'll tell me how long the infected take to starve to death it's not a
14:53terrible idea yeah west sucks and this seems cruel but considering we saw selena hack up someone who
14:58hadn't technically turned yet cruelty is kind of fluid at this point there is almost a colonel kurtz
15:03vibe here but with a stiff upper lip which is much what i saw in the four weeks before infection and
15:08the four weeks before that and before that as far back as i care to remember people killing people
15:13and the fact that west can't see the difference between war and the infection should pretty much
15:17tell our heroes everything i want to bury my dad he's one of the people you're talking about
15:22i love west's little nod to acknowledge that hannah is right flood lights sound so bright but
15:26when you are completely surrounded by darkness they never do as much as you'd hope but this is
15:30such a great horde stuffed sequence for showing us how competent they are as soldiers which plays
15:34into the idea that they'd already be getting bored with just surviving i mean not totally bored
15:42you got me to protect you now what sucks about this is that it feels predictable in the movie
15:46because it's predictable in real life and in no way am i excusing this sentient skid mark in a
15:51woolly pulley but him feeling emboldened right after combat while his adrenaline is pumping checks out
15:55sergeant sir clear the bodies off the law love the subtle subtext here that feral is the outsider
16:01within the soldiers and clearly isn't on board with what west has planned
16:07also the blink and you'll miss it hint that west has a plan and the rapey boys are moving too fast
16:11i moved us from the blockade i set the radio broadcasting and i promised them women
16:17because women mean a future being fan of how fast jim walks away and makes the decision to leave
16:22not saying that playing along wouldn't have been smarter but i still love it you can be with us
16:27but i can't let them go christopher eccelson is so amazing in this role it's a common zombie theme that
16:32the walking dead aren't actually the zombies and the grossest part of this film isn't the blood vomit but
16:36west sells the idea that his hands are tied he just doesn't have a choice which is obviously nonsense but
16:41you believe him it's also the moment that jim finally lets go of his last father figure in this film
16:45just think about it how could infection cross the oceans and feral isn't just a softy or like
16:53a decent human he's also a critical thinker they quarantined us it's always fun when the
16:58guy who sounds crazy is 100 correct i swear to god it's cleared badly for you clairvoyance
17:06jim even tricked me again it's amazing that something as simple as that would absolutely give jim the
17:10hope and burst of adrenaline to do what needs doing and this confirmation that feral was right is
17:14actually a fantastic twist especially when this little section of humanity has turned feral like
17:19this i adore how this storm is only teased with the thunder as jim goes over the wall and then suggested
17:24by the water on the windows maybe it's just me but the build-up of this scene is one of my favorite
17:28moments in all the film pick out a wide selection yes sir i don't know man i fully believe the apocalypse
17:36could cook a human brain but smiling about it reveling in their misery that these kinds of
17:40people exist might be reason enough to take ruskull's advice and walk off into oblivion which
17:44was kind of feral's point at dinner so if the infection wipes us all out that is a return to
17:50normality i haven't killed since it began who have you killed you wouldn't be alive now if you hadn't
17:54killed somebody killed a boy a child and furthermore it's this scene that reveals how west got them to
18:05this point but you had to otherwise he'd have killed you survival helping jim justify his own actions as
18:14necessary he's clearly convinced his men that false imprisonment rape and really just going full
18:19handmaid's tale is necessary for their survival self-sacrifice can't kill selena's hope either
18:39i feel like i'll need to say variations of this 15 times over the next 15 minutes of the movie but the
18:43way jim becomes the monster in this scene he races across frame and then his breath almost sounds like
18:48a growl while he waits for his victim and the abandon with which they are just emptying their
18:52guns really says something all jim basically said was hey things are bad but like we're only a month
18:57into this let's maybe keep some human decency and not resort to forcing ourselves on women and
19:00literally children and these dudes are like nah nope kill him now fun fact aviation hat boy is west's
19:06favorite and he's forced to kill him himself in a deleted scene and really i'm just glad they all
19:10suffer a little i know it's just artistic license but this series has always played with the idea that the
19:14rage virus doesn't completely control you more so in weeks but mailer's little thanks i'm gonna
19:19mess him up look is peak i'll go and hit the floods tiger bushes if you ever need proof that american
19:24slang is lacking just spend some time with anyone who knows some cockney take a butcher's a butcher's
19:29hook have a look those pills i think they're having an effect i can feel them i don't feel sleepy
19:36again drugs train spotting guy she's a minor but he's holding himself back they're dead
19:46and you're gonna be next something about her calm drugged out demeanor while telling him he's next is
19:50so satisfying the mailer has some timing in the what yes my friends it's time i'm glad i haven't built it
19:58up at all and i love how it starts just as mitchell says the words fun fact the actual film version of
20:08john murphy's in the house in a heartbeat is slowed down about three percent making it a semitone lower
20:12than the soundtrack version it's also almost seven minutes long so if you're wondering why the
20:16soundtrack version has never quite lived up to the feels you get while watching this scene that half
20:20step down starting on a c sharp instead of a d totally changes the vibe welcome to movie score wins if
20:25you're new here i spend way too much time on this stuff just go watch my stranger things video on
20:29nebula for proof hey those are frank's apples his scream is the definition of blood curdling
20:34look jones was the least bad of the group but you know what they say if nine people break bread with
20:39a proud rapist you've got 10 rapists a little nonchalant glance at the scream every shot of jim
20:47throughout this sequence will have you questioning if he's infected you know he's not but you also know
20:51he's not himself turns out rage and infection aren't mutually exclusive alas jones shot feral so he
20:57wouldn't have to be bayoneted to death and yet he himself gets bayoneted to death oh the quick black
21:02out in there there well well well if it isn't the consequences of my own actions
21:09it's the slow build that i love the quiet guitar drones on for over two minutes just now adding in
21:14some percussion punctuated by a few moments like the strum of chords that cut out right on the stab
21:22trapper hat rage zombie has always been my favorite zombies are always in the clothes they died in or
21:26weren't in but i'd have such a hard time being scared of the guy with a goofy hat on i didn't say
21:30impossible also ingenious hiding spot and the script has been totally flipped now with shirtless bloodied
21:38jim showing no fear while the soldiers cower
21:43and another punctuation of the distorted electric guitar as selena knows she's hearing jim but don't
21:48worry i'm gonna get you out of here and we're gonna find a nice little place somewhere it's really
21:53impressive that mitchell holds on to being a creep to the very end they're trapped and hiding from
21:58zombies and he's still like uh when this is over i'm still gonna be a creep fyi even the way jim's
22:03charges shot is reminiscent of the way the infected run at victims he's filmed like an infected i'd say
22:08this counts as ending badly and it's the best usage of this kind of death in the series because i
22:12don't care for the other one that was longer than a heartbeat interesting because my heart just
22:18stopped beating from that line love there's so much going on in this one moment obviously it's
22:23the climax of the best track to ever grace your ear balls aptly titled in the house in a heartbeat
22:32and obviously jim is calling back to when she said she wouldn't hesitate something she'd already
22:35proven when she ended mark but over the story we've seen selena slowly soften while jim hardened a
22:40little is it a little silly that jim didn't say some human words to prove that he wasn't infected
22:45maybe or did the simple fact that he didn't say wait as mark did show selena that he knew he wasn't
22:51infected did he want to give her the chance to prove to herself that she actually cared about
22:55more than simply surviving bro drops the smoothest punchline with the smoothest irish voice and by the
23:01way she says his name he just got the biggest non-i-love-you-i-love-you ever who could have
23:07predicted that not decapitating someone could be so demonstrative but it is a zombie movie after
23:12all and i guess what they've been through snogging while covered in other people's blood isn't really
23:15that bad you know given that it's not ragey hannah it's okay he's not infected but i thought he's
23:24biting you i was kissing good looking out hannah comeuppance also love that her quick reaction
23:30driving was set up earlier and nice little poetic justice that it's mailer who gets him
23:38and this is why i still have hope for butch and sundance this quick cut montage with hell written
23:43on the hill it's crazy that there's a version of this where jim is dead because i personally hate
23:46that and this rhymes with jim waking up again after something dramatic the greenery totally new world
23:51yeah yeah there's sequels but outside of shawn of the dead this is honestly one of the most hopeful
23:55endings for a zombie film do you think he saw us this time how could he possibly miss this face
24:01pretty much a perfect movie for me continuity errors crappy camera and all it's the movie that
24:05introduced me to killian murphy and my life has been better ever since i didn't hold much back in
24:09the main part of the video so i don't have a ton more to say i think the underlying theme of jim
24:12searching for a dad only to find out he has to take some responsibility for himself works really
24:16well even if it isn't something i really picked up on the first time i saw the movie no the first time
24:20i was cheering inside my brain when he takes over the house in a rage-filled rampage
24:24one other thing i kind of breezed over was the sound design of the screaming and the zombies are
24:28insane but it's actually the human screams that really get under your skin
24:43they don't hold back at all it's almost uncomfortable at times you can really feel
24:48their suffering which is the weirdest thing to win ever but hey i love 28 weeks later as well we'll
24:53definitely be able to get to it but much like i talked about in my horror sequels video it upped a
