Parks rangers in the Northern Territory are reminding hikers to be prepared before they head out into the bush after two men in their 60s in separate incidents were rescued from the Larapinta Trail this week. It follows several recent misadventures in northern Australia, including two hikers who got lost while descending Mount Cougal near the Queensland-New South Wales border.

00:00There's breathtaking beauty on every step of the popular Larapinta Trail, but it's a
00:08challenging route for even the most experienced hikers.
00:12We've done it for 10 years amongst our group.
00:15Perth's Mark Foley started the walk with his friends, but halfway through he felt unwell.
00:21I just had a skin sore which one of the guys was fixing up and I just all of a sudden felt
00:28very dizzy.
00:29And was evacuated to Alice Springs Hospital with a suspected infection and dehydration.
00:35This is the second rescue of a hiker from the Larapinta Trail this week.
00:39And in the past fortnight, there's been a string of rescues across Northern Australia.
00:44It serves as an important reminder to be well prepared when you're heading into the outback.
00:49Chris Day has been working for Northern Territory Parks for more than 40 years.
00:54He says it's essential for adventurers to carry a personal location device.
00:59The majority of people these days are carrying some sort of communication device and it's
01:04helping first responders know where people are.
01:10And to remember the basics.
01:12You know, then it's having all the right equipment, making sure you've got food, water, shelter.
01:19Not just for hikers' safety, but for the response team's leading rescues.
01:23It can be massive.
01:24I mean, invariably, they happen at difficult times like weekends when, you know, we have
01:29less staff rostered on and I'm sure the emergency services are a bit the same.
01:34Mark and his friends were well prepared and Mark was soon back to full health.
01:39Yeah, as I say, I rejoined the trip at Stanley Chasm.
01:44A satisfying ending after an eventful hike.
