00:00And these members, usually the average calls that they go to in dealing with some very dangerous situations or items, average about 1,100 per year.
00:14So these aren't people who don't do this very often.
00:17They are fantastic experts.
00:21And unfortunately, I lost three of them today.
00:23Sheriff, regarding what happens here, why were these materials brought back to this?
00:29There was a possibility that they were unstable or dangerous.
00:33Normal protocol would be taken to the wayside.
00:35The bottom range out there, we don't want to risk here.
00:39Why was it not done out there or are they in the process of trying to do this to transport it out to the wayside to handle it better?
00:46Those are all questions, Pete, that we're going to get to.
00:49We need to go from A to Z to know exactly what happened.
00:52And that's why we have our partners here from the Federal Bureau of Investigation that we'll be doing, conducting the post-blast.
01:00There'll be a lot of details coming out there.
01:02Eventually, ATF is here to assist them, the national response team.
01:08These are individuals that have a lot of expertise in what they do.
01:12And again, all the questions being asked, very good questions.
01:16But if I waited to get the answers to those, I'd be here probably in two days.
01:20And I'm just trying to get out here in front of all of you.
01:22Are you anticipating a procession for the fallen deputies here, or are they going to come out support your department at this time?
01:29The question is, are we anticipating a procession for our three heroic deputies who passed away?
01:37And the answer to that is yes.
01:38There will be a procession.
01:40I don't have any specific information on that, but it'll happen the next several hours.
01:46Sheriff, we understand that you're still gathering information, but perhaps because of the nature of what we're dealing with, usually logs are kept whenever anything is moved.
01:56Can you at least tell us a little bit about the vehicle they were driving or anything at all that could give any kind of preliminary indication?
02:03Because, as you have said, these guys know what they're doing, and they're incredibly careful.
02:08So this seems to be something completely out of nowhere.
02:11Is there anything else you can share with us on that?
02:13I don't have the answers to those questions yet.
02:16And, again, getting out here, trying to be out here at this time to inform all of you, our community, to know what we know at this time was very important.
02:26Again, all of you are amazing.
02:29You're asking very important questions.
02:31And we're going to get the answers, I think, to, if not everything, to most of them.
02:34But we just simply don't have that information at this time.
02:37Were these things being transported manually or not being used on this?
02:42There is currently an investigation going on to determine what happened from the very beginning to the end.
02:49I know everybody wants answers.
02:51Please understand, we just rendered the scene safe.
02:55Within the last 30 minutes, the LAPD bomb squad rendered the scene safe.
03:00We have to go back, investigate what happened from the very beginning, and we'll get there.
03:07Just not going to happen this soon.
03:09I would be very irresponsible to try and answer a lot of these questions without the information that I need to positively give you facts.
03:19And I don't have the facts at this point.
03:20Sheriff, we understand that you're telling us everything you can tell us.
03:23And we understand we've got to wait.
03:25By when, roughly, you think you can have another press conference to tell us more information?
03:30We'll, through our Sheriff's Information Bureau, we'll put something out in the next couple of hours of when we would have more information.
03:41But I'm going to tell you right now, based on my experience, when we're conducting these type of investigations, it doesn't take hours to get some of this information.
03:50It takes days and weeks.
03:53We do not rush this investigation.
03:57We want to make sure that we're extremely thorough.
04:01Ladies and gentlemen, we lost three lives.
04:04And we want to make sure we know what happened.
04:08We don't want to repeat for this.
04:10And, again, all the questions that are being asked are very legitimate.
04:13There are other law enforcement agencies who have bomb techs, not only around the country, around the world, that want to know what happened here.
04:20So we want to make sure that no one else, we don't repeat this, right?
04:24So thorough investigation will be done by multiple agencies.
04:28And we'll get back to you about it.
04:31It sounds like everything is repeat questions about the incident.
04:34I can't answer any of those right now because we don't have those facts yet.
04:38So with that, thank you all.
04:39And then we'll keep you updated on any progress or anything else.
04:43Appreciate each and every one of you.
04:45God bless you.
04:47That was Los Angeles Sheriff Luna updating us on the tragic set of circumstances after three L.A. sheriffs' deputies were killed in that accidental explosion.
04:56Let's take a quick commercial break.
05:09Let's take a quick commercial break.
05:39Let's take a quick commercial break.
06:09Let's take a quick commercial break.
06:39Let's take a quick commercial break.
07:09the press conference today just walk us through when you first heard of this incident what went
07:15through your mind well i was actually in a meeting with mayor bass um because both mayor bass and i
07:21have uh the wildfire devastation in our district my district alfadena first palisades so we were
07:28meeting with philanthropy to go over what the needs are and i got the notice and you know um
07:35my first reaction is is just devastation and because i'm close to the sheriff's department
07:40i also thought i wonder if i know these three individuals and um you know it's heartbreaking
07:47i mean law enforcement as it stands right now with everything that's been going on in this
07:50this county over the last few weeks has just constantly taken it um rocks thrown at him spit
07:58on and then to have this happen the the the morale within the department is is is really low
08:04um but this has shaken everyone to their core so i know the investigation is ongoing right now if
08:11you could though what have you learned about the investigation itself do we have any more idea
08:16about how this happened what went wrong no what what they've got they've got atf and fbi are on scene
08:23and um they're working with the sheriff's department um going over uh everything and then the state
08:29marsh fire marshals there and they're gathering as much information as they can as you know at the
08:34press conference sheriff luna had literally um came from the scene where they had just deemed it safe
08:40uh so they're gonna they're gonna dig very deep to find out what happened um but we probably will not
08:47know maybe today but i i would seriously doubt it maybe in the next few days we'll we'll know more
08:52specifics but the best are on site right now i was up there um and i'm confident that we're gonna get
08:59answers yeah do you worry you mentioned the morale of the department especially in the wake of so
09:04many of the stories especially here on live now we've been covering all summer especially with the
09:08anti-ice demonstrations the illegal immigration enforcement raids still the aftermath from the
09:14deadly wildfires there in january do you worry about the morale of the department and whether or not
09:19it could deter those who want to join up and sign in and and enter into the ranks of the la sheriff's
09:27department that it could deter them hey listen i i worry about anyone wanting to be in law enforcement
09:34period uh in today's climate um but obviously this is just one more reminder uh for people that want to
09:43uh take the path of law enforcement that there are no guarantees that you are putting on a uniform
09:48and protecting a county a nation um and it will come with risk and uh i know that the deputies i talk to
09:58are dedicated they know um what can happen um and you know this is an example of the fact that
10:05that our law enforcement partners um do amazing things and to have this happen uh at a time when
10:17they are feeling completely under stress i mean under a lot of stress um it's it's gonna have an
10:23impact i'm confident it's gonna have an impact but free this horrific situation um and this accident
10:29uh there was already that feeling amongst the sheriff's department yeah you had mentioned
10:35that you were in a meeting with mayor bass uh when news of this broke um what was her reaction
10:39what has she said and also have you been in touch with california governor newsom about this
10:44so you know mayor bass immediately um and and uh chief mcdonald was out on site um offered any
10:51assistance whatsoever i mean compassionate um to a point of true empathy about it um and i have not
10:59talked to the governor but i do know um that the governor has um sent um notice to
11:05sheriff luna to let him know anything that we need from the state um they stand ready to support us
11:11yeah i wanted to ask too you mentioned that you went through your mind if you knew uh these three
11:17deputies who lost their lives today in this tragic accident do we know anything about them have you
11:22been in touch with their families if so no you know i i think the people were critical and and there
11:28was a vacuum of information lack of information um early on um sheriff luna put this press conference
11:35together at 11 45 um the reason why it took so long is because he put the family first he wanted to
11:42make sure that he connected with the families that have been impacted and one family was on route when
11:47we were at the press conference and then he took care of the county family he has men and women
11:51from all ranks that are truly devastated by what happened and so for um for you know the sheriff
11:59he he prioritized what needed to be done um and uh and obviously uh i stand ready to do anything i can
12:08to support these families because i i really can't even put into words how devastating this is um for me
12:15um because i really do view um the men and women in our sheriff's department as part of my family
12:21and um i take time to stop by department at the stations to talk to the deputies to hear what's
12:27going on um the deputies that that were killed actually were working two of them were assigned to
12:35our boardroom every tuesday um and so um it's it's it's it's really taken a toll no i was reading that
12:45this is the deadliest day for law enforcement in los angeles county in over 100 years and that
12:50fact just kind of stops you in your tracks there um but you know in the wake of especially accidents
12:56like this at training facilities for law enforcement does it spur questions about whether or not some of
13:02the protocols need to be looked at uh need to be re-examined in order for something like this
13:08not to happen again is it too early to ask that question no i mean you know i i will guarantee that
13:14that the men and women that work within that unit are asking that question but um reserve my judgment
13:21in terms of what happened uh i always say that i feel like the word accident should be taken out of
13:26the dictionary because everyone wants to look to blame um uh you know something or someone um i'm
13:33gonna wait for um the investigation to take place but understand this um these are the best of the best
13:40and i'm not just saying that because i am a county supervisor um but truly our seb our bomb unit are
13:47elite the best well trained constantly getting training work closely with lapd swat team uh and so
13:55i am confident that we'll get the answers um but at this point um it's being uh attributed to an accident
14:02but i think it's important to get the facts to find out what we could do different or lessons learned
14:08um but you know for me uh i i just want to i want to get the answers for the families i know the families
14:13want to have the answers just lastly i mean we're going into the weekend these families are going to
14:18be irreparably damaged by this you can't imagine their grief right now here what would you tell our
14:24viewers about where this story goes from here what more do you want to know
14:28well obviously i want to know what happened um and i know the family wants to know what happened
14:34it's not going to bring their loved one back but they deserve answers but what i want the audience to
14:39know is um that law enforcement is a very very very special special
