Sussex Sharks skipper Tymal Mills speaks to BBC Sussex's Adrian Harms post-Sussex v Surrey - which the Sharks lost narrowly to be knocked out of the 2025 Vitality Blast
Transcript
00:00Okay, to our mills, it was a breathtaking night of cricket, it's ended the wrong way.
00:05What are your reflections on that game?
00:09On the game itself, obviously you can chop it up a million different ways.
00:13I think it was a brilliant effort, probably one of our better performances,
00:17especially with the bat all year against obviously a very, very experienced and talented team.
00:22And yeah, I thought a few innings in there, Dan Hughes has struggled most of the campaign,
00:28but we saw the best of him tonight and the way James Coles played tonight was outstanding
00:32and he was only removed by an amazing bit of fielding by Sam Curran.
00:37So yeah, I think obviously we had a lot riding on the game and then to lose in that fashion was obviously really disappointing.
00:44But yeah, I think if we're really honest of ourselves, we didn't not qualify because of today's performance.
00:52It was kind of how we played over the last two weeks really that's hurt us.
00:57And, you know, there's a lot of guys upstairs hurting now and it's always disappointing.
01:00Especially we had a brilliant campaign last year and we fell short of that this year.
01:04But, you know, tonight showed a bit more of what we're capable of.
01:09So yeah, it's tough now to already look to next year when you're not 10 months away.
01:13But yeah, very, very mixed emotions, but obviously disappointed to not be fair.
01:18Does it make it even worse, the fact that you played well last night in Cheltenham
01:22and tonight as to what might have been tonight?
01:24Yeah, as I said, we had that run of games a couple of weeks ago that cost us.
01:30Probably the Kent game at home here probably being the biggest one.
01:33I don't know if Kent had qualified or be more.
01:35Yeah, Kent had qualified, they won, yeah.
01:36Yeah, if we were to close that game out, then things would have been very, very different.
01:40So yeah, you know, that's cricket, you know, ifs and buts.
01:44I think over the course of the 14 games, we could probably look in the mirror and say we weren't quite there.
01:50But we got ourselves in a position to be there, but obviously coming here tonight to obviously play the best team in the competition,
01:58arguably, is always going to be a tough beat.
02:00And yeah, really proud of how the boys stuck to the guns and gave it a really good day.
02:06What positives do you take out of the campaign today?
02:09It's hard about all the stats, whatever, looking towards it.
02:13It's always difficult.
02:13We were so good last year and we didn't have many bad nights at all, did we?
02:17And it was always going to be hard to follow it up and hopefully guys have learned from that.
02:21You know, we've had quite a few guys maybe not quite as well this year compared to what they did last year.
02:24So that will be a good learning in and of itself.
02:27And yeah, I think just the way we batted tonight was great.
02:31James Coles, the way he batted all competition, really, especially he came out all guns blazing.
02:36His strike rate, I'm sure, is much higher this year than it was last year.
02:39And so Coles, I think, will take a lot out of it and a lot of confidence.
02:42The way he came out tonight and struck it from ball one was outstanding.
02:46Henry Crocom as well, he started outside, out of the team.
02:48But when he came back in, you know, rarely, rarely put a foot wrong.
02:52So Crocom, I think, could really hold his head high in the way he played.
02:56And I'm probably missing players as well.
02:58It's hard to pick out individuals.
02:59But yeah, as a team, you know, myself included, we, you know, we weren't quite there throughout the competition, I'd say.
03:07That's encouraging, Tamal, that two young players who have come through the ranked series.
03:10That's what you picked out there have performed well in the competition.
03:13Yeah, of course.
03:13And that's something that the club has obviously done well over the last three, four years.
03:17It's a lot of players that have been here either a long time since they were, you know, juniors or on the staff for a few years now as well.
03:24So, yeah, look, we'll keep progressing and we'll see what ins and outs happen over the next year.
03:28But it's still July.
03:30There's a lot of cricket to play, although, you know, my season and a couple of other boys is done here.
03:35There's still a lot of cricket to go.
03:36The boys are in a great place in the championship.
03:37And I know Favre's is keen to see a big improvement in the 50-over competition as well.
03:42So, yeah, it's disappointing.
03:44We, you know, we've got a lot on the T20 now and to fall short, as I said, is disappointing.
03:48But a lot of cricket still to go for the club.
03:50Finally, Tamal, full house here over.
03:52It was a tremendous atmosphere and the Tassel public, you know, really got behind you at the latter stage of this competition.
03:58Yeah, and as I said, it was a good game and it was building, you know, to a really nice crescendo and, you know, going back and forth.
04:03And there was a little spell where we were probably ahead in favourites.
04:07But credit to Sam Curran, the way he bowled his last over and that catch up the hill.
04:11Chris Jordan bowled well down the hill to finish as well.
04:14You have to give credit to him.
04:14They've got some world-class players that play international cricket and all around the world.
04:17And, yeah, it's a good level, a good yardstick, I guess, for where we're at and where we aspire to get to.
04:24And, yeah, we'll just keep trying to come back stronger next year.
04:27Well, thanks so much.
04:28Thanks for all your help during the competition as well.
04:29And just, you know, good luck for next season.
04:32And thanks very much.
04:33See you next time.
