Jacob Bertrand | Train Like | Men's Health
Transcript
00:01Yeah, that's basically how I train on Cobra Kai.
00:04Train like me!
00:06And you can look like this.
00:08Hello, Men's Health.
00:09My name is Jacob Scott Thomas Bertrand,
00:11and this is how I train for Cobra Kai.
00:18I started martial arts like most children
00:21in a strip mall karate class when I was about six years old,
00:25and I got my blue belt.
00:27But I forgot all of it before we started filming.
00:29It did not help me at all.
00:31And then when we started filming, they were like,
00:33hey, you look kind of uncoordinated
00:35when you hold your hands up like that.
00:37So we did a month of training.
00:39After we did that, I realized a month is not enough,
00:42and I started training on my off time.
00:44So I trained a lot of Muay Thai, a lot of Jiu Jitsu.
00:47That didn't help me at all, but it was just fun to do.
00:50I don't know.
00:51I normally don't work out with weights.
00:54For some reason, my body is too weak to do it,
00:57and my brain doesn't have fun doing it.
00:59So a lot of the workouts that I do are more dynamic, maybe.
01:03Today, we are going to be doing the warm-up stretches techniques
01:08and little workout that we do on set before we do fights.
01:11All right, now let's get into it.
01:13Welcome, everyone. You've made it to the shirtless part of the video.
01:17It's very important for what we're about to be doing that I'm shirtless
01:21as we are learning to be stretching.
01:23Yeah, you can't kick someone in the face if you're not flexible enough to do it,
01:26and that is the goal of training, is to kick people in the face.
01:30My main form of working out is rock climbing.
01:33That is the fix that I like.
01:38But yeah, I've been climbing since middle school.
01:42I'm not super tall, but my long wingspan does help a lot with climbing.
01:47I don't feel anything when I do the stretch.
01:49To me, the stretch is so big.
01:51It's so placebo.
01:52So, like, how can I actually stretch my garage?
01:54I go like this.
01:55And you.
01:56Something that we do a lot or every time before we start doing crazy kicks or choreo
02:06or any type of workout, which just really helps with flexibility and kicking strength,
02:11it's the static endurance kicking exercises.
02:15So what we're going to do is we're going to just do a very slowed down version of a roundhouse kick.
02:20Start here for five seconds.
02:24And you hold out for five seconds.
02:27So you come back.
02:30And you go down, you get a little bit of a rest.
02:33Alright, so we're going to start with just low kicks.
02:38Training is pretty much whenever we're not shooting.
02:43The vibes on set, everyone knew that it was going to be bittersweet, but it was fun.
02:50And we had a really big priority on making sure we sort of appreciate that it's the last season
02:57and everyone got to hang out a lot.
03:00We made that a priority.
03:02Yeah, it was just, it was a good time.
03:05Just getting to focus on being with everybody, act like a family, you know.
03:11Alright, so now we are going to be working on body kicks.
03:15It's very important.
03:17Lots of good knockouts come from body kicks.
03:20I think one day I will be a UFC champion.
03:25And I will be knocking lots of people out.
03:27So I got to train like it now, you know.
03:29Who are you going to knock out in the UFC room?
03:32Give me a second.
03:34Taeda.
03:35He's a pretty easy knockout.
03:37He's a couple pounds on me, but I think that's kind of light work.
03:41I love Brandon Moreno.
03:43I probably will train with him.
03:45He'll probably be my training buddy.
03:47Okay.
03:48Least high kick.
03:49Head kick.
03:50We don't throw head kicks too much because Johnny pulls his groin a lot.
03:55So to not make him feel bad, you know, all of us will keep our legs a little farther down for him.
04:04They always want me to do some crazy 10-40, you know, Superman wild kick that, you know.
04:13I have learned how to do flips for this role, but that is not where I started.
04:19I was not a gymnast or, you know, any of this karate stuff.
04:23So a lot of those spinning kicks.
04:25I had to learn a kick called a fei long, which it's a 360 crescent kick into a push kick.
04:32And it just requires so much air time that we didn't even have like enough time to end up doing.
04:40So I learned a cool kick that I'll never be seen.
04:45Probably.
04:46Right now, we're going to be doing the sort of speed round stuff.
04:53So normally what we'll do is we'll go low, high, or low, body, low.
04:58And you just want to do them clean and quick.
05:02You know, you want to have a good rhythm to it like that.
05:05Good rhythm.
05:06Good rhythm is best.
05:07Good rhythm.
05:08That's what you want.
05:10Oh, man.
05:13Wow.
05:14Oh, man.
05:15Muay Thai to me is the most fun.
05:16And my character specifically, I get to throw a lot of elbows.
05:22a lot of elbows I do a lot of knees and it feels very Hawk you know which they
05:29were right because I loved it and it's been super fun and each character feeling
05:34very different and you know it is a karate show but you know we're throwing
05:41Superman punches and you know elbows and crazy kicks and you know there's a lot
05:48of different influences you know throughout all the characters yeah Muay Thai
05:52I think it's like when you get to do like a Superman elbow on someone that's sick I get to do that in
05:58season one right off the rip Muay Thai crazy guy throwing elbows at people that should be
06:02illegal I don't know if it is or not but yeah the backflips the flips they all kind of started where
06:12I was just talking with a lot of the stunt guys talking about how I've always wanted to learn
06:16how to flip but it's just so scary and John G. Hangir one of our stunt guys he plays Rick and
06:21Burger um he's like dude I'll teach you to flip right now five minutes super easy he pulled out
06:26a little rinky dink mat and was like all right just flip I'll help you get over I was like what he's
06:30like just do it just flip right now and I was like ah you know did a horrible flip as I jump he just
06:37backs off completely and it's just and I realized mid I'm like what the heck I said I'm going up and
06:44uh I landed my first flip and since then every other sort of trick I've had to do has been
06:50a similar version of that of just come on try it we'll help you okay he kind of did it let's just
06:56like fake it help him this up and then they're like all right you got it
07:00wow
