Lewis Pullman | Eat Like
Transcript
00:00We were raised in a very kind of like granola fashion,
00:03so going over to my friends' houses,
00:05I was packing my pockets.
00:06I was a little thief.
00:08Hi, I'm Lewis Pullman.
00:09Today, I'm going to tell you what my diet looks like
00:11and how it affects my training.
00:20I mean, my philosophy is pretty loose,
00:22unless I have a job that I'm preparing for,
00:24and then it's pretty regimented.
00:26I try and get as much protein in as possible.
00:29I'm also about rest.
00:30I think that's obviously very important,
00:32but I also think that, like, you should enjoy life
00:35and enjoy the things that you love.
00:37If you like beer, you should drink beer,
00:39and if you like bread, you should eat bread.
00:42My must-have foods are eggs, milk, avocado, and steak.
00:50Beef. Actually, in any form, really.
00:54I would say it's pretty slim.
00:56I'm, like, not a picky eater.
00:57I eat it all.
00:58My mom really made me clear the plate.
01:00If I have a choice,
01:01I'm probably going to scoot the asparagus
01:03to the edge of the plate.
01:05It makes your pee smell so weird.
01:10I wish that I was an early morning workout guy.
01:13I admire those people who can do that.
01:15I don't get the gumption and the kind of fuel that I need
01:19for a workout until probably, like, after 2 p.m.
01:22or I'm a late-nighter after the day is done and then do it.
01:25I have no problem falling asleep after.
01:27I can pretty much sleep anywhere, anytime.
01:31I had to lose a lot of weight for this movie Bad Times at the El Royale.
01:35That was kind of early on in my career.
01:38I should have looked in better avenues to kind of do what I did,
01:42but essentially that was just, like, really doing a lot of high cardio
01:45in the beginning and lowering my caloric intake gradually
01:48over the course of, like, a month and a half.
01:50And then eventually I cut out the cardio and just did die
01:54because your energy and output starts to really decrease.
01:57You don't want to be on set and, you know, be angry.
02:01Nobody wants that.
02:03Thunderbolts was a really interesting challenge
02:05because I play Bob who has multiple kind of facets to his character.
02:11And so in the beginning, he's very kind of scrawny and unassuming.
02:14We tried to kind of hide me under these really loose scrubs
02:18and I tried to use my body language a lot to make him seem a lot smaller.
02:22And so how can you look like that scrawny in the beginning
02:25and then also look like you're a superhero in the end?
02:28I worked with this great trainer, Brendan.
02:31You know, I only had, like, a month and a half to prep,
02:33but it's how to get superhero ready.
02:36Essentially, I did a lot of boxing, eating chicken, turkey,
02:39no carbs whatsoever, and hitting the gym with him for, like, an hour and a half.
02:44That got me super lean.
02:46And then on, like, the day before, we kind of limited how much water I was drinking.
02:50And then, like, an hour before Showtime, you're eating, like, Skittles and Snickers, which is fun.
02:57And you don't really even see it in the movie.
02:59You know, it's a scene where his shirt kind of gets, like, shot off his body.
03:02And Jake Schreier, to his credit, was like,
03:04it's kind of weird if just your shirt gets shot off your body and not, like, your pants.
03:08He was like, maybe we can just do this part.
03:10So then, for, like, two hours before, I was just hitting abs really hard
03:14because it was just that portion of my body.
03:16That was actually a tip that Wyatt Russell gave me early on.
03:20He was like, yeah, I did that in my first go.
03:23He was like, and then I saw the actual take that they used, and it was like two seconds on my back.
03:27He was like, I'm never doing that again.
03:28And I did it for myself.
03:29Now I know I can do it, and I learned a lot.
03:31And so I integrate a lot of what I learned into my solo workouts now.
03:36There is Onset in Atlanta, which is also where all the stuntees work,
03:42and they do all their badass shit.
03:43And so that's in the day, if we ever had any kind of downtime,
03:47we could kind of plan a training session in there.
03:51Whoa.
03:53There are so many to choose from, and they're all probably good conversationalists.
03:59I'm wanting Iron Man, I'm wanting all three Spideys,
04:02Thor, and Yelena, you know, Florence,
04:06because she just makes the dinner party lively.
04:10Chicken shawarma, I love chicken shawarma, why?
04:16Diet.
04:17I can be like an impulsive person, and so it's really just about staying at home
04:22and not keeping stuff in the fridge that you're not allowed to eat,
04:25because if I go out and people are eating a burger,
04:28I'm going to probably lose that battle.
04:32Okay, this is my average day.
04:34This is my average breakfast.
04:35I'm not saying this is what everyone should do.
04:37This is just what I do and what I, like, have an appetite for every day.
04:41I usually will do four eggs, either sunny side up or soft-boiled,
04:45with two pieces of sourdough bread with lots of butter and avocado,
04:51and maybe some tomatoes in there.
04:53I'm not a huge coffee drinker, so usually I'll just have a, you know,
04:56so I always have to remind myself to drink a bunch of water.
04:58It's never something that, like, intuitionally comes to me when I first wake up,
05:02but it really does kind of help move things along.
05:06Lunch is trickier, because I sometimes will skip lunch or have a late lunch and then a light dinner,
05:12but usually it's something like chicken or turkey.
05:15In my off days, I love burgers, but if I'm prepping for something,
05:19burgers are kind of the light at the end of the tunnel for me.
05:22I keep those on the horizon.
05:24They keep me going.
05:25It's the carrot, the dangling carrot that kind of keeps me moving forward.
05:28And, yeah, so something light, you know, I can kind of go overboard with lunch
05:34and then have a kind of sagging portion of the day, so I try to avoid that.
05:38Dinner.
05:39Yeah, I grew up, like, my mom was making a lot of very, like, healthy, very conscious decisions
05:45when she was feeding us kids, so I have a palate for a lot of different things.
05:49Just try and get some greens in, usually roasted chicken, salad with chicken,
05:54and I'm not a picky eater, so in that way, I just basically try and not do anything too greasy
05:59to something that's going to make me feel really groggy when I wake up the next day.
06:04I love a good smoothie.
06:06It's hard when you've got a busy schedule to get it in,
06:08so I love protein bars.
06:10They're very, like, limited ingredients.
06:12I had two of them this morning.
06:14That's getting me to where I am right now.
06:16I wish I had had my eggs and sourdough and turkey bacon, but I didn't have time for it,
06:20so smoothies or some sort of meal bar is great.
06:24I just started taking AG1.
06:26I think there's a lot of minerals that I'm missing in my daily diet.
06:29I literally don't eat enough greens, and I don't have enough, like, of a consciously-balanced diet.
06:35That's been great.
06:36It really has been helping my energy.
06:37They have not hired me.
06:39They're not paying me.
06:40I've only been doing it for, like, two months, but it's great.
06:43And then when I'm prepping for a roll, I'll start doing some creatine if the job requires it.
06:48That's hard for me.
06:51It took me a long time to learn to share.
06:53I'm the youngest kid, and so I'm used to everything getting snagged off of there, so I eat really fast.
06:58I'm at a place now where I'm comfortable with it.
07:00If it's somebody who I love and who I want to be nourished, I have a lot easier time sharing up my plate.
07:07I like to cook.
07:08I like to cook with my mom because I learn a lot from her.
07:10She's a very intuitional chef, and so it's cool to watch her do that and the artistry of that.
07:16I'm not as experienced, and I don't have the patience.
07:19I'm a great sandwich maker also.
07:20I make a mean sandwich.
07:22Turkey, arugula, avocado, some heirloom tomatoes, maybe some sautéed, like, farmer's market mushrooms, mayo.
07:33I know that's controversial, and, like, maybe just a thin layer of mustard in there.
07:39I hate a dry sandwich more than anything.
07:41My family's obsessed with fruit because my dad came to L.A. and was, like, blown away by how many fruit trees there were that were, like, there was always something in bloom, and there was always something that was, like, ripe, and they were always kind of just draped over the sidewalk, and it seemed like they were begging to be picked.
07:58So he kind of, like, ended up planting a lot of fruit trees, and so there's always very interesting fruits being integrated into our diets and our meals.
08:07My dad makes an incredible sauté sorbet.
08:11It's almost like a sweet avocado.
08:13You don't see them a lot in farmer's markets because they brew so easily, and he puts nothing in them.
08:18He just de-seeds them, de-peels them, blends them, freezes them, and then puts them through this champion juicer, and it's, like, it's some of the best thing you can ever have.
08:27And you can only have it in a Pullman household.
08:29So come on over and have some sauté sorbet.
08:33I have no qualms with eating in bed.
08:35Eat in bed, as long as you're okay doing a little brush off.
08:38I don't like crumbs.
08:40I'm not, like, under covers eating bed.
08:41I'm, like, cross-legged over the covers watching something.
08:45Just eat smart.
08:47I'm Louis Pullman.
08:48Take it all with a grain of salt, but that is what my diet looks like.
08:52Thank you, guys.
08:57Bye-bye.
09:01Bye-bye.
09:05Bye-bye.
