00:30But can begin in childhood too. It's more common in women and can run in families.
00:34It may be linked to an overactive fight or flight response and higher sensitivity to stress hormones.
00:392. Symptoms. If you've had 4 plus panic attacks and constantly fear another, it may be panic disorder.
00:45Symptoms can include racing heart, sweating or shaking, trouble breathing or choking,
00:50chest pain can feel like a heart attack, nausea, dizziness or stomach pain, feeling disconnected
00:56or unreal, numbness, chills or hot flashes, and fear of losing control, going crazy or dying.
01:02Attacks can last minutes to over an hour. They're intense but not life-threatening.
01:063. Diagnosis. A doctor or mental health provider will talk to you about your symptoms.
01:11If you've had several attacks and are constantly afraid of the next one,
01:14that's usually enough for a diagnosis.
01:174. Treatment. Treatment usually works well.
01:19It may include anti-anxiety or antidepressant meds, plus therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT.
01:26You'll learn how to cope, relax, and understand that the symptoms, while scary, aren't dangerous.
01:315. Complications. Without treatment, panic disorder can affect your work, relationships, and daily life.
01:37You might avoid certain places or even stay home out of fear.
01:41Some people turn to alcohol or drugs to cope.
01:44Panic disorder can be overwhelming, but it's treatable.
01:46With the right support, you can take back control and live fully again.
