Food and Booze, Dr. Lachs | The Future You | Men's Health
Transcript
00:00So you just mentioned nutrition. Let's start there. How should people be eating and supplementing
00:05when they're older? And then to take a step back, how should they lay the groundwork for that when
00:10they're a little younger? Welcome to The Future You, a new series by Men's Health, where we talk
00:14to the leading experts in health and longevity to help you live longer and stronger. I'm your host,
00:19Rich Dormant. In this episode, we're talking with longevity expert Dr. Mark Lacks about food and
00:25booze. Well, look, the data is becoming compelling about plant-based diets, and I think more data will
00:32come. I think maintaining ideal body weight, however... So just to get back to plant-based diets,
00:37we're for plant-based diets? We are. We are. I think the data is coming and is here.
00:44We're not talking about being vegan or vegetarian. It's eating primarily fruits and vegetables as the
00:49bulk of your diet, supplemented by dairy, meat, things like that. And, Rich, avoiding processed
00:56food. I mean, that's really the anathema. Yeah, I think that's the case. Now, one of my little
01:04taglines to patients is moderation in excess. Okay? I mean, you see this data on no alcohol
01:15consumption is safe. I'm not sure I fully agree. I think it really depends on your genetics. If
01:19there's a propensity to liver disease or other alcohol-related problems, reflux or other problems.
01:26But I don't think an occasional glass of wine or beer at the ballgame, if that's what you enjoy with
01:33whatever spicy food you're eating, is problematic. And some people are going to disagree with me,
01:39but I'm a quality of life guy. Right. But you're not on the team that says it's actually beneficial
01:44to you or that it's good for you. No, the data, you know, and that data is misused for people to
01:49over-imbibe. I mean, clearly there's a U-shaped curve with alcohol consumption. You probably know
01:55that to some extent, you know, teetotalers have a slightly higher mortality than people who drink a
02:05little bit. And then when you drink too much, it goes up again. It turns out that those studies
02:10of teetotalers and modest drinkers, they may be epidemiologically incorrect or confounded. We
02:17don't need to get into the details. But I tell people to moderate their alcohol more than I did a
02:21decade ago, certainly. Sure. Yeah. Red meat? Occasionally. One of my, my doctor likes to say,
02:28you should eat meat like a condiment. But I'm more, I am a Mediterranean diet guy. I've been eating,
02:34you know, much more fish myself. I'm getting used to tofu, trying. It's a journey. It's a journey.
02:42Getting used to oat milk and almond milk. The almond milk's getting better, I think.
02:46The oat milk's getting better. Yeah. You want the extra creamy. What a, what a, what a world.
02:51Omega-3s. I don't know how they milk those oats though. I'll send you a website. I haven't found any
02:57udders on almonds, you know. Omega-3, am I taking fish oil? You know, so let's get to the larger
03:04issue of supplements. Um, if you don't have a specific dietary deficiency from a, a chronic
03:12medical problem, like you malabsorb B12 because of an intestinal problem, the data is uncompelling
03:18on supplements. Okay. My, my joke is, is that Americans have the most expensive urine in the
03:24world. They just pee this stuff out and spend your money on the gym, you know, or exercising.
03:31Um, I'm an evidence-based guy. Okay. Um, show me data in a randomized trial the way I would
03:38drug A versus drug B for hypertension. I'm in. So, um, examples there. I've looked at a study
03:44recently that looked at peppermint versus medication for nausea that people get with chemotherapy.
03:51And the peppermint was pretty good. Excellently done randomized trial. Um, seen some studies of
03:56melatonin, um, that, um, that have been used to get people off addictive drugs like Valium.
04:02Excellent randomized trial. But those are few and far between. And many of the claims are
04:07kind of bogus. You've seen it in Times Roman 2 on the TV. Always. Um, this is not meant to treat
04:15or cure any disease. And it's not, uh, approved by the FDA. Whatever you think of the FDA, we need
04:20science, by the way, most of the compelling randomized control trials are around mind body or
04:26around yoga, around guided imagery for mood disorders, um, for anxiety. Um, people want
04:33a free lunch though. You know, they want to, uh, they want to take a pill and make everything
04:37better. And until we get that pill for aging, there ain't no free lunch. Right. Yeah. And
04:44needless to say, you should always talk to your physician or your internist before you take
04:47any of these supplements. I think that's right. And some of them interact with medications
04:51in a, in a, in a negative way. They can increase the dose, the blood levels of certain medications
04:57or, or, or decrease them. Mm-hmm.
