00:00What I learned from my patients was that everybody,
00:04no matter what age they are, need several things.
00:08We all need to have a reason to get up in the morning.
00:11Purpose.
00:12Exactly.
00:13It doesn't matter if you're 15 or if you're 100.
00:17You have to have a reason to get up in the morning.
00:20And people who don't have that reason
00:23and don't have a place to go to,
00:25it was shown many years ago,
00:27as they get older, they get sick and die.
00:30Not the next day, but over time,
00:33they're more likely to get sick and die.
00:36It's the most deep of human needs.
00:41The other deep human need in the doing of things
00:46is that human beings are, you talked about genes,
00:49human beings are genetically encoded
00:52to need social connection.
00:55Now, my wonderful colleague, John Cassioppo,
00:57who founded the field of loneliness science,
01:03said, talked a lot about the evolutionary origins
01:07of why human beings would need that.
01:11Why should we care?
01:12And, you know, the evidence is very strong
01:15that over human history, traveling together
01:18got more accomplished, more safely,
01:22more effectively than traveling alone.
01:25Mm-hmm.
