00:00This large-looking canine might look like some kind of wolf, but it isn't.
00:04It is a variant of eastern coyote that lives on Newfoundland Island, the Newfoundland coyote or coy wolf.
00:11Larger and more powerful than mainland eastern coyotes, with large individuals weighing up to 80 pounds.
00:19They posably arrived in Newfoundland in the 1980s or before by crossing the frozen ice that forms in winter,
00:25they have rapidly adapted to island life.
00:27Unlike their mainland cousins, these intelligent predators hunt in family packs.
00:34With wolf-like howls echoing through Newfoundland's wilderness,
00:37they stand as one of the island's apex predators, together with the Labrador wolves among other predators.
00:44Unlike their mainland cousins who sometimes tackle moose and other large prey,
00:48these island coyotes regularly hunt full-grown moose and even caribou.
