00:08and this hole on the martian surface has raised even more questions about the inner workings of
00:13the red planet as scientists have no idea what it is the image was captured by the mars reconnaissance
00:18orbiter while soaring over the arcea mons region the hole is only a few meters in diameter but it
00:23is particularly important to planetary researchers as arcea mons was once a region with active
00:29volcanoes scientists have long said that if humans were to go to mars we would need sturdy shelters
00:33from the extreme weather and intense radiation from the sun one avenue of engineering research
00:38points to lava tubes as a possible location for human shelters to be built natural caverns that
00:43block wind dust and solar radiation that's why this image is exciting for nasa however they still need
00:49more info that's because rather than a lava tube this could be what's called a pit crater where a
00:54collapse of material deeper underground has left a giant chasm rather than a tube meaning it would
00:59likely not make for good shelter on mars experts say the next step is to get a robotic mission to one
01:04of these sites ahead of a human mission to set up a base there
