New risk of measles deepens vaccine tensions in rural Canadian town  Tensions arise in the Canadian town of Aylmer over measles vaccine acceptance, as Canada faces a spike of more than 3,000 confirmed cases and ranks ninth globally, just behind Nigeria, according to World Health Organization data updated July 9, 2025. Canada, which officially eradicated measles in 1998, has recorded more cases of the virus this year than the United States, despite having roughly 300 million fewer people. 01:27seeing this outbreak has been really difficult to watch unfold.

01:33As a person passionate about children and advocacy for children,

01:37I feel like it's unfortunate that we are seeing children sick

01:43with a condition that is totally preventable.

01:47There's a certain portion of the population that is hesitant to accept the vaccine effectiveness,

01:56and those folks are more challenged as to whether or not to be vaccinated.

02:05Only in the respect that public education is paramount for everyone to understand the benefits and challenges of remedies.

02:17I don't like the idea that everybody thinks that, or if everybody thinks that Mennonites are anti-vax,

02:23that certainly isn't the case.

02:25But there's certainly a conservative part of this end of the county that is strongly anti-vax.

02:33The tensions are certainly less serious, I would say because there is a lack of government intervention.

02:41I believe that's really what got the tensions fired up before.
